Some Tiny Island remained uninhabited until 1695, when the Pirate Henry Every (an engraving of him can be seen to the left) made landfall there. Every and his men set up a minor settlement on the island in order to replenish their ship's supplies and repair damage from a recent engagement with a Royal Navy patrol. He then left the island and landed in Ireland in 1696. Most of his crew were captured, but he himself managed to evade such capture. He found some families who were willing to join him to colonise the island he had discovered, and they managed to buy a ship (with the money he had made from his capture of the Ganj-i-Sawai). They settled the island, and Every ran it as his own little kingdom. The name "Some Tiny Island" actually originated from Every's discussions with his fellow settlers before they set sail from Cork in 1699. They asked him about the island, and he said that it was "somme tiny island, awaye from pryinge eyes, but neverthelesse having everyethinge needed for settlement". Despite Every's objections, the name "Some Tiny Island" stuck. The nation's flag itself is Every's jolly roger. The nation's motto originated in 1972, when a newspaper report on recent events on the island noted that "Some Tiny Island can be summed up in four words: Small Island, Big Ego". The islanders understood that this was meant to be an insult, but they soon adopted it as a badge of pride: and in 1979 the government decided to establish it as the national motto (although the motto on the coat of arms remained unchanged).
