The best option is to do what the Questarian Army does: i.e. not to use strict equipment doctrine. If Private Jackson wants to bring a sidearm, he can if he wants to. Of course, I'm rather different, because the only thing I issue troops with are fatigues and boots and I make them buy everything else if they want it >_> Then again it's mandatory for every white Questarian to own a service rifle, and some things are passed down from father to son during their military service.

And if the guy next to you has extra magazines, no need for a pistol.

Evidence please.

I can back up what I said.

Pointe du Hoc, 6/7 June 1944. American Rangers run out of ammunition, and use German weapons. The relieving force open fire on the sound of German weapons, causing 20+ casualties.

Like every other decisions, there are upsides and downsides.

A pistol can be used one-handed, during actions like rappelling, they are MUCH smaller than an assault rifle, and can be brought to bare in much tighter locations (seated in a vehicle, for instance), though bullpup rifles do tend to mitigate this fact.

The additional primary ammo and/or grenades are more bluntly useful, allowing more shots to be fired from full-sized weapons.

There's also a few other options you could look into, such as assigning MachinePistols like the Steyr TMP as a sidearm where they might be useful (special operations), however, that's not a good choice for an army-wide weapon. A better choice is to assign each soldier a sidearm and magazines, but then let the soldier themselves choose whether or not to take the sidearm on missions (you'd likely end up with a 50/50 split on taking the pistols, or leaving them behind)

Alright, the Magazine runs along the top between the carry handle and the buttstock, it's that darker gray rectangle with the hooks up over it's end. The weapon feeds fresh ammo like a P90 would, but due to it's different operating style, the rounds are instead rotated from the magazine to the chamber inside the gun itself.

There's a lighter gray rectangle beneath the back (feeding) end of the magazine, with a lip at the forward end. That's the dust cover for the ejection port.

Yeah, I had assumed the references to the FN P-90 and the AK2012 from Metro would have tipped most people off. I'm sorry I didn't mention it properly earlier, I guess.

Please do not be one of the fools who issues extra magazines instead of a sidearm. Issue a sidearm there is a very good point behind it despite what the ironmongers here say.

No there isn't, give me one good reason to waste money and space giving soldiers a sidearm.

If you have a "No surrender" policy. Pistols are handy for suicide.

Of course, even then it would be cheaper to go the Japanese route and commit suicide with grenades.

Or you could go the cheapest, and generally most demoralizing for your enemies, which is to fix bayonets (or not if you are that poor), and charge into battle so they can shoot you up.

Yes they do, the BA bought a shed laod of SiGs and shipped them to afghanistan where troops had been asking for them. There is the talk that a lot of the shiny new SiGs ended up getting left at base and at the bottom of kits bags once they had been issued to and carried for a few patrols by those who wanted them.

The M-14 is chambered in the 7.62x51 NATO round or commonly known as the .308 not the 30-06 Springfield. Their is a difference.

The M-14 derives from the T20E2, which was a mag-fed M1 Garand prototype. It's by no means a stretch of the imagination to put it in .30-06.

Issuing soldiers pistols is a carryover from previous times. In the past, a revolver or semi-auto handgun could often fire faster then a traditional soldiers primary weapon, and had a larger clip. It was used when one was caught without ammo in their gun (whether because they are reloading, or out of ammo, or whatever). Modern firearms make pistols largely obsolete for the conventional soldier, as carrying extra ammunition for their primary rifle serves the same purpose, especially for smaller rifles like the M4 which can be maneuvered relatively easily within buildings. This doesn't mean "pistols should never be issued to the military, ever".

For special forces it's useful for the frequent close quarters where one won't need to be firing past 50m, for it's light weight and maneuverability, although one can often use a submachine gun or machine pistol for the same purpose.

For officers it's often a sign of rank or prestige rather then of utility, the natural progression of issuing officers swords to wield in combat.

tl;dr, it's probably better to just issue more ammo for a conventional soldiers primary weapon, than to issue a sidearm. Special Forces should probably be issued a pistol or machine pistol, and officers, well, that's up to a matter of personal preference.

Welcome to 1938.

I thought ten thousand swords must have leaped from their scabbards to avenge even a look that threatened her with insult. But the age of chivalry is gone. That of sophisters, economists, and calculators has succeeded; and the glory of Europe is extinguished for ever.

The United States Army utilizes the M-14 Battlerifle chambered in .30-06 Springfield as it's main battlerifle. [It does not deploy assault rifles]

The United States Army utilizes the 1903 Springfield chambered in .30-06 Springfield as it's mid-range Sniper Rifle

The United States Army utilizes some sniper rifle I can't remember the name of but was designed by Satirius also chambered in .30-06 Springfield as it's long range sniper rifle/counter sniper.

The United States Army Special Forces and Airborne Divisions utilize the M-2 fully automatic Carbine chambered in .45 ACP as their main assault-carbine.

The United States Army National Guard utilizes the M-1 Garand chambered in you guessed it; .30-06 Springfield as their main battlerifle.

The United States Maritime Rangers utilize the M-14 Battle Rifle chambered in yet again; .30-06 Springfield as their main battle rifle.

The United States Air Force utilize the H&K MP-5 chambered in .45 ACP as the premier submarinegun/PDW of United States Pilots.

The United States Navy utilizes the M-2 Carbine chambered in .45 ACP as their premier assault-carbine.

Oh; all branches of ground/maritime infantry also still use a Rifle Bayonet.

Which about wraps it up for the second time; no pictures this time round
.

The M-14 is chambered in the 7.62x51 NATO round or commonly known as the .308 not the 30-06 Springfield. Their is a difference.

There is? Anyway; the M-14 was originally chambered in .30-06 Springfield in original testing, was rechambered for .308 and then rechambered again for pissy NATO rounds. Kthxzbai.
