Tergnitzian Travel Advisory: Barbaric Foreign States and You

Postby Tergnitz » Wed Aug 04, 2010 2:46 am

Greetings citizen,

Welcome to the Tergnitzian Travel Advisory website, provided by the Imperial Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In these uncertain times of constantly shifting geo-politics, rampant slavery, genocide and war, the Imperial Government has made the safety and security of Imperial citizens’ overseas one of its core priorities. To this end, this website has been created to give the citizens of the Dominion a more informative view of the various nations around the world when deciding where to go on vacation. Outlined below is the ideology and attitude of both the local government and populace of a plethora of nations, along with the Imperial Foreign Ministry’s recommendation as to whether said location is a viable travel option for any upstanding Imperial citizen.

The Imperial Foreign Ministry – Representing your Dominion on the world stage

Travel Advisory Scale:

Imeriata
“I count King Oskar as one of my close personal friends; we have had many frank exchanges as well as interesting social engagements. A tradition I hope to continue with the construction of an estate for the Imperial Family in the nation’s lush, northern forests. The citizens of Imeriata are a proud and honest people, vibrant and full of life. The Empire has no closer friend or ally on the world stage.”
- His Majesty, Emperor Augustus Vera on Imeriata

This small exert from an interview with His Imperial Majesty perfectly sums up the Imperial Government’s opinion on the nation of Imeriata. Together, our two great nations have a rich history, working diligently over the course of many years in pursuit of freedom for the oppressed peoples of the world. Imperial and Imeriatan soldiers have fought valiantly, side-by-side, to liberate the numerous foreigners from their repressive, dictatorial and often communistic governments.* Despite their slightly outdated belief in the unstable feudal system**, Imeriata is a nation which has a strong capitalistic tendencies, as evidenced by the ‘hands-off’ approach adopted by the Crown when dealing with the domestic economy. With the recent military aid provided by the Imeriatan Crown during the ‘Crimson War,’ public approval of Imeriatan-Imperial relationship has never been higher.*** Whatever the future holds, the government and people of the Empire know in their hearts that we will meet the challenges of tomorrow with our closest friend and ally by our side. Thus the Imperial Government is proud to proclaim that Imeriata is completely safe and actively encourages Imperial citizens to travel there at least once in their lifetime.

    * The Foreign Ministry recommends 'Blood Brothers' by historian J.P Sherman, for a more in-depth analysis of joint Tergnitzian-Imeriatan military operations.
** As demonstrated by ‘The Great Purification’ by Emperor Killian Vera.
    *** 89% favourable opinion, 7% undecided, 4% unfavourable opinion – Tass Polling

Ramsetia
A nation of alarming and stark contradictions, the Imperial Government is currently reviewing its policy towards the Imperial Territories of Ramsetia. Upstanding Imperial citizens will be delighted to hear that Ramsetia has adopted a method of governance very similar to that used in our glorious Dominion, with several crucial differences however. The lack of an independent judicial branch compromises the effectiveness of the local government, placing a significant amount of bureaucratic strain on the sole political body, the Imperial Assembly. The presence of the glorious institution of the monarchy however, does nothing to allay the concerns of the Foreign Ministry holds regarding the Ramsetian economy. While claiming to be a capitalistic society, the fact that the local government forces its citizens to pay exorbitant amounts in taxes undermines these claims of economic freedom. Moving beyond the economic contradictions, the Ramsetian government claims to enhance the freedoms of is citizenry while subtly subverting them. It proudly boasts that it does not censor the nations’ internet*; while quietly mentioning that the operation of motor vehicles in inner-city environments is illegal. Imperial citizens will definitely be confused regarding these peculiar laws. Despite these bizarre inconstancies, the fact that Ramsetia has not been involved in any major military engagement with foreign powers shows that Imperial citizens shall not have to fear an outbreak of hostiles in the middle of their vacation.** Additionally, it is noted that the Ramsetian capital city, a large, underground citadel, is a must-see for any Tergnitzian tourist wishing to visit the Imperial Territories. With that, the Imperial Foreign Ministry advises that all Imperial citizens remain cautious and vigilant when travelling to Ramsetia.

    * I was truly surprised during my journey to Ramsetia that while browsing the internet, I discovered a local site which advertised weapons-grade plutonium, remarkable.
** Or that the Ramsetian isolationist nature is actually a smokescreen to avoid revealing to cowardly nature of the nation’s military.

Tartonica
Commonly referred to as the ‘venus flytrap of the north’ by Lord Baron and Ambassador Nicholas Caltip, upstanding Imperial citizens must be forgiven for mistaking Tartonica for a civilized nation. The trappings of a monarchy are easily visible, yet this glorious exterior hides a dilapidated and rotten core. Abandoning the free-market and capitalism system, the people of Tartonica have instead embraced a disease called socialism which has obviously affected their judgement.* This disease has seen the once mighty monarchy reduced to a sick, twisted joke in international, diplomatic circles. However, fear not citizen, all hope is not lost for your vacation plans. A semi-autonomous region known as Democratic Tartonica exists in the nation’s south which shares many similarities to our own Empire, making it the perfect location for a short holiday. Overall, the Foreign Ministry advises citizens to beware if they wish to travel to Tartonica proper, yet this rating is elevating to only advising caution if your destination is Democratic Tartonica.

    * It is currently unknown as whether this disease is contagious to Imperial citizens.

The Tavan Race
Upon leaving the celestial boundaries of this planet, the Imperial Government has deemed that the likelihood of encountering intelligent xenos species to be very low. The very notion that any xenos species could come close to the innate perfection and intelligence possessed by Humanity, as endowed by our Creator, the Lord God, is a laughable concept. However, even diligent in our duty to protect the proud citizens of this Dominion, the Foreign Ministry, working with the Ministry of Defence has developed several possible encounter scenarios that are open to the public.*

Scenario XXX-037, dubbed the ‘Tavan File’ concerns a possible encounter between the Dominion and an ‘intelligent’ xenos race. This race, for illogical reasons, values beauty over strength, as can be seen by the fact that they place a ‘woman’ at the head of their government. Far more bizarre than this however, is the seemingly communist ideology that is etched into the very genetic code of the species. This genetic defect has meant that the species tends towards collectivist action, with over ninety percent of the population unemployed. Through this involuntary shunning of individualism and the free-market, the economy of this species can be described as ‘minimal’ at best, ‘nonexistent’ at worst. Finally, this species, probably due to the moral and mental decay associated with pseudo-communist ideology, lacks a martially-oriented lifestyle. Thus the Imperial Foreign Ministry, in association with the Ministry of Defence conclude that should this race be encountered, they would easily be subjugated by the forces of Humanity, with the Dominion righteously leading the charge. However, due to the potential for lingering guerrilla action by the local xenos, the Foreign Ministry would likely advise future travellers to beware, when travelling to or through areas formerly under xenos control

    * Many of which are written by yours truly.

Ewa Beach
The plight of the Ewacian citizen is known to many throughout our most Holy and Civilized Dominion. Consigned to a life of abject poverty and forced into the observance to a pantheon of pagan gods, mothers in the Dominion are sometimes known to scare their children by threatening to send them to the so-called Kingdom of Ewa Beach* if they misbehave. A nation of racially inferior peoples, the Ewacians have somehow managed to not only infest the islands to the direct south of our beloved Dominion for several centuries, they have managed to fend off foreign invaders. Putting the vast political, cultural and religious differences between the upstanding Imperial citizens of the Dominion and the Kingdom of Ewa Beach aside, there are a range of similarities in the economic sphere. While the Ewacian economy does focus on primary industries, there are a range of secondary and tertiary industries which have been able to carve a niche out of the incredibly competition pan-Judean market. However, only the most desperate citizen would be advised to invest their hard-earned dollars into the Ewacian economy. Frequent spates of internal and external conflict has beset the island nation, one such conflict was even undertaken against our glorious Dominion. A fact which has not been forgotten.** Thus in conclusion, due to the inherently aggressive nature of the Ewacian people, in addition to the animosity between the Dominion and the Kingdom, the Imperial Foreign Ministry hereby advises all citizens that the nation of Ewa Beach is potentially dangerous to travel to and recommends that Imperial Citizens avoid the island nation if it can be helped.

    * The ‘Kingdom of Ewa Beach’s’ Constitution places a wide-range of restrictions on their monarchy. A fact which has resulted in the Foreign Ministry’s scepticism as to the actual power the monarchy holds.
** See ‘Lost Souls: An Account of the Battle of the Halfax Sea’ for more details.

OOC: Yes, this is another bandwagon thread about my nation's opinion on your government. Just post your factbook and you will soon receive your totally objective rating from the Foreign Ministry. If information is not provided or no longer is presented, an evaluation will not place. Additionally, if your nation CTE's, forget about me doing an evaluation of it; just common sense really.

Yeah, I kinda thought of that when nobody posted a reply, hence the ooc comment. I just wanted it to stand out from the usual, "what does x think of your nation' threads.

Vystercia-Nasucrea Factbook (Copy & Paste)

Postby Vystercia-Nasucrea » Sun Aug 08, 2010 8:59 am

Vystercia-Nasucrea is a union of two nations: Vystercia and Nasucrea. The former used to be a feudal confederation, before consolidating into a strong monarchy under its vaklu benor "High King", Ar-Ges I. The "High" part was dropped after the Vystercian-Nasucrean War, which resulted in the conquest/liberation of Nasucrea by Vystercia. The latter was a centralized, despotic matriarchy with strong repression and cruelty toward its male population, many of whom were castrated for the sadistic pleasure of the Empress Amthalla and her predecessors. These eunuchs remain a large and vocal part of the country's citizenry. The former Empress has been exiled and there remains much mistrust of Nasucrean noblewomen to this day.

At first a protectorate under Vystercia, Nasucrea has since become a partner in this dual monarchy, which has since become a Co-Regency. One of its Co-Regents is King Ar-Yos I. The other Co-Regent is King Sergan I, the former Viceroy of Nasucrea (and former Prince Consort under Empress Amthalla) and former Prime Minister of the Dual Monarchy. By the terms of the new Co-Regency Act, one Co-Regent has to be Vystercian, while the other has to be Nasucrean.

The Vystercians are very warlike, nationalistic, fond of beer, and eagerly promiscuous (both sexes). They are a proud, independent, boisterous people with a strong code of personal honor based on military virtues. The nobility are the traditional officer caste, but many commoners have risen through personal courage and others forms of merit. Due to polygamy, despite some of the more snobbish members of the aristocracy, many nobles have cousins who are of the middle and lower classes.

The Nasucreans are sober, paranoid, and very torn between natural patriotism and disgust at their country's past injustices. They are much more cautious about sexual partners, with men often (though thankfully not always) preferring eunuchs as lovers, and vice versa. They are also more likely to be selective than Vystercians, who consider breeding like rabbits to be their civic duty (hence the national motto).

Both are heavily armed, of course. Feminism is naturally very unpopular in that country, and feminist politicians tend to tone down their rhetoric by doctrinaire standards. While the Crown is powerful, so are Parliament and the courts. It is a real separation of powers, as both Vystercians and Nasucreans are leery of so-called "responsible government".

In terms of political philosophy, there is a strong libertarian trend in both economics and social issues. The exceptions are abortion and contraception, which are shunned as obstacles to ideal rates of procreation. The market is only lightly regulated and taxes are rather low by international standards. The State is mostly an excuse to create a military and some infrastructure, with a few police to keep the peace. The vast majority of Vystercians and Nasucreans tend to be Deists, with some pockets of paganism, Judaism, and Christianity existing here or there. Islam is practically non-existent.

Despite this, green industries have grown due to the naturalistic philosophy of most citizens.

There are only two major nationalities: Vystercian and Nasucrean. However, there are growing ethnic minorities of Italians and Jews.

The national languages are: Vystercian, Nasucrean, English, Italian, and Hebrew. The current population now exceeds a billion and grows everyday.

Date of establishment 1953

Aperture Science, Inc., or simply Aperture, is an American scientific research corporation whose laboratories and administration are located in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. Originally a shower curtain manufacturer, it evolved over the course of half a century into an experimental physics research institution and a bitter rival of Black Mesa. It was introduced on its real-world official website, ApertureScience.com, then featured in two games of The Orange Box: Portal, with the Aperture Laboratories as the game's main setting, and the Half-Life 2: Episode Two, where it is discussed near the end of the game. The Aperture Laboratories are also expected to be the main setting for Portal 2.

Aperture Science, Inc, often simply referred to as Aperture Science simply Aperture, is a scientific research corporation whose laboratories and administration are located within CLASSIFIED. Originally a shower curtain manufacturer, it evolved over the course of half a century into an experimental physics research institution and a bitter rival of Black Mesa. It was introduced on its official website, ApertureScience.com.

Overview
History
Cave Johnson era

The entrance to the Aperture Laboratories.
In 1953, Aperture Science is founded by Cave Johnson, as a shower curtain manufacturer. The name "Aperture Science", seemingly random, is chosen "to make the curtains appear more hygienic". In 1956, the Eisenhower administration signs a contract with Aperture to manufacture shower curtains to all branches of the US Military, except the Navy. From 1957 to 1973, the company produces mostly shower curtains, eventually making Cave Johnson a billionaire. As far as 1973, Aperture also uses a BBS system.

In 1974, Cave Johnson is exposed to mercury while secretly developing a dangerous mercury-injected rubber sheeting from which he plans to manufacture seven deadly shower curtains to be given as gifts to each member of the House Naval Appropriations committee, likely because the decision of the Navy not getting its shower curtains from Aperture depended on that committee, and Johnson probably held a grudge against them for that. In 1976, both of Cave Johnson's kidneys fail. Brain damaged, dying, and incapable of realizing time is not now flowing backwards (thus realizing his time will come soon), he lays out a three tiered research and development program. The results, he says, will "guarantee the continued success of Aperture Science far into the fast-approaching distant past." What happens to Cave Johnson afterward is unknown, although it is surmised he dies.

The three tiers of this research and development program are:

Tier 1: The Heimlich Counter-Maneuver - "A reliable technique for interrupting the life-saving Heimlich Maneuver." In other words, ensure choking.
Tier 2: The Take-A-Wish Foundation - "A charitable organization that will purchase wishes from the parents of terminally ill children and redistribute them to wish-deprived but otherwise healthy adults." It counters the Make-A-Wish Foundation, designed to grant wishes to terminally ill children.
Tier 3: The 'Portal' project - As said by Johnson when it was first laid lout: "Some kind of rip in the fabric of space... That would... Well, it'd be like, I don't know, something that would help with the shower curtains I guess. I haven't worked this idea out as much as the wish-taking one." This is what will become the 'Portal' project, involving the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device and its creation of portals.
Post-Cave Johnson era

GLaDOS.
In 1981, Aperture engineers complete the Heimlich Counter-Maneuver and Take-A-Wish Foundation initiatives. The company announces products related to the research in a televised ceremony. These products become immediately wildly unpopular. After a string of very public choking and despondent sick child disasters, senior company officials are summoned before a Senate investigative committee. During these proceedings, an engineer mentions that some progress has been made on Tier 3, the "man-sized ad hoc quantum tunnel through physical space with possible applications as a shower curtain." The committee is quickly permanently recessed, and Aperture is granted an open-ended contract to secretly continue research on the 'Portal' and Heimlich Counter-Maneuver projects. From 1981 to 1985, work progresses on the 'Portal' project. During this time, several high ranking Fatah personnel choke to death on lamb chunks despite the intervention of their bodyguards, showing that the US government has apparently put the Heimlich Counter-Maneuver to work.

As far as 1982, the Enrichment Center, where Test Subjects undergo tests, is functioning, as the Enrichment Center Test Subject Application Process, a 50-question questionnaire destined for applying Test Subject, is already used at that time. It is unknown if the Enrichment Center is already "computer-aided" in 1982, as scientists have been known to supervise them from small offices until an undetermined date. The Enrichment Center Test Subject Application is operated by version 1.07 of GLaDOS, later "1.07a" and "1.09". In 1985, the Aperture Image Format is created.

In 1986, word reaches Aperture Science management that Black Mesa is working on a similar portal technology. In response to this news, Aperture Science begins developing GLaDOS. It is unknown why and how her name was already in use as far as in 1973. In 1985, the Aperture Image Format is maintained by Doug Rattmann. In 1996, after a decade spent bringing the Disk Operating System parts of GLaDOS to a state of more or less basic functionality, work begins on the Genetic Lifeform component. During that time, the Aperture Science Red Phone plan is implemented in case GLaDOS appears to become sentient and godlike, requiring an employee to sit by a red phone on a desk in GLaDOS chamber's entrance hall. In 1997, GLaDOS's version is 3.11. In May 200-, the untested AI of GLaDOS is activated for the first time as one of the planned activities on Aperture's first annual bring-your-daughter-to-work day. Upon being activated, she almost instantly becomes self-aware, takes control of the facility, locks everyone inside, floods the Enrichment Center with a deadly neurotoxin, but is partially halted when she is quickly fitted with a Morality Core. She then begins a permanent cycle of testing, aimed at beating Black Mesa in the race to develop a functioning portal technology.

In 1998, Aperture Science releases the Propulsion Gel to the public as a diet aid, serving as a dietetic pudding substitute made out of liquefied, non-toxic fiberglass insulation and marketed under the name "Propulsion Pudding". However it is a failure and must be pulled from shelves. Later that year a new formula, the Repulsion Gel, is released, and is another failure. Boths Gels are subsequently recycled for use with the ASHPD in Test Chambers instead. The same year, Aperture releases other testing elements, such as the Excursion Funnel, a funnel made of asbestos, the Thermal Discouragement Beam, a laser to be used with a Weighted Pivot Cube to destroy Sentry Guns, the Aerial Faith Plate, a catapult plate flinging into the air Test Subjects or any other object upon contact, and the Pneumatic Diversity Vent, a variant of the Vital Apparatus Vent used for distributing objects to Test Chambers.

GLaDOS's control

GLaDOS's Morality Core.
As seen in the hacker message found on ApertureScience.com referring to the lockdown, the remaining employees continue working, as they are said to be working on twenty year old equipment. The construction of an Enrichment Center is also mentioned, suggesting that the Aperture Laboratories house several of them. The number of Aperture Science employees also likely diminishes, until there are only a few of them left. The Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device is likely already completed at that time, but it is unknown if it is before or after GLaDOS's activation.

Portal era

A typical Test Chamber in the Enrichment Center.
At the time of the events, the Enrichment Center seems to be long abandoned, and GLaDOS seems to rule it alone, although other people are apparently still trapped somewhere. The scribblings left by Rattmann also seem rather old, showing that the Enrichment Center has been partially abandoned for some time. A calendar named "The girls of Aperture Science", dated 1983, is also rather worn-out. Chell is awakened in her Relaxation Vault in the Enrichment Center, and is guided as a Test Subject by GLaDOS, utilizing the completed ASHPD, while the A.I. shows signs of instability. When GLaDOS attempts to murder Chell at the end of her tests, she flees through maintenance areas of the Enrichment Center, and eventually seemingly destroys GLaDOS, before being dragged away inside by the Party Escort Bot.

Before her partial destruction, GLaDOS hints to Chell that things have changed since the last time she left the building, and that what is going on out there will make her wish she were back in here. GLaDOS also says she was the only thing standing between them [GLaDOS and Chell] and an undetermined group, likely the Combine (possibly now defeated - a question left to be answered).

-PostPortal era
It happens "hundreds of years" after Portal. During that time Aperture Science as it originally was likely does not exist anymore, as GLaDOS and the Personality Cores took over the partially destroyed facility, where tests are still performed. If there were other people still trapped in the facility during the Portal events, they are likely all dead.

Other facts

Aperture Science owned a research ship, named Borealis, housing a yet to be revealed technology. It disappeared and took a chunk of its drydock with it and soon became a legend amongst the scientific community. Debate raged between Eli Vance and Isaac Kleiner over whether the technology within should be destroyed or used. Kleiner said he felt that the power could be used to destroy the Combine, but Eli seemed to suggest that he felt that trying to utilize the power could result in a repeat of the Black Mesa Incident.
Aperture Science and Black Mesa were bitter rivals. As seen in the Portal maps "testchmb_a_15" and "escape_02", Aperture Science employees were briefed on Black Mesa through slideshow presentations, such as one titled "Dollar$ and Sense: Competing with Black Mesa for DoD and Government-wide Acquisition Contracts" (apparently made in the nineties, given its style). This slideshow gives some statistics pertaining to Black Mesa, a graphic comparing the GSA schedules for both Black Mesa and Aperture Science, showing that Black Mesa did not ask much and received more or less the same, while Aperture asked a lot, and received much less than Black Mesa, and compares what Aperture and Black Mesa have to submit to the Defense Logistics Agency for developing a Fuel System Icing Inhibitor, and the role of their GLaDOS in that task. These slides show how much they were directly competing for government funding; Isaac Kleiner also theorized that the Borealis disaster may have been caused by Aperture Science's rush for such funding.
"Dollar$ and Sense" slides
Title card of the "Dollar$ and Sense" slideshow.

During Chell's tests, GLaDOS mentions a "self esteem fund for girls", to which one can donate one or all of their vital organs. This is likely true, as it is apparently said as one of GLaDOS's few automatic messages.
The bring-your-daughter-to-work day mentioned on ApertureScience.com is also mentioned by GLaDOS in Portal, where she says that that day is the perfect time to have one's daughter tested.
A memo found among the ASCII art images revealed during the Portal ARG states that Aperture Science is built on three pillars, apparently coined by Cave Johnson himself:

Pillar one: Science without results is just witchcraft.
Pillar two: Get results or you're fired.
Pillar three: If you suspect a coworker of bein' a witch, report them immediately. I cannot stress that enough. Witchcraft will not be tolerated.
Another memo suggests that Cave Johnson had some issues with official accountants, who were likely responsible for managing the funds given by the state, as they seem to be an authority higher than him.
Another memo appears to be a letter from Johnson to several Test Subjects who raised their concerns about the dangers of the research conducted by Aperture Science.
As suggested in Portal, Aperture has not much concern about its Test Subjects. A memo revealed by the Portal ARG apparently consisting of the answer to a (confidential) letter received by Cave Johnson elaborates on this, and seems to describe the four types of Test Subjects and their behavior, in a not very human way. It goes as follows:
CONFIDENTIAL
October 17th, 1976
Re: Human Enrichment & Testing Initiative, Resource Acquisitions

1. "Low Risk" Human Resource Acquisitions

a. Hoboes and Tramps
Lives spent wandering aimlessly, cowering before authority, and drinking concussive amounts of home-distilled potato alcohol make hoboes the perfect Human Enrichment test subjects. The hobo questions nothing, will follow orders if fed, and, like all hoboes, has a restless, wandering heart. (Note: The wandering heart of the hobo should not be confused with Wandering Heart Syndrome, which several transients contracted during testing.)

b. Child Orphans and Foundlings
Deep-rooted abandonment issues leave most orphans highly susceptible to shame-based psychology (for a complete list of opportune moments to obliterate the esteem of test subjects, please consult Training Video #89-D, "You'd Perform This Test Better if You Had Parents"). Recent advances in the use of scorn, flattery used in an ironic context and naked contempt as motivational tools have yielded similarly profitable results.

c. Psychiatric Patients
Past experience shows these fellows are simply not shy at all about carrying on, disrupting tests and defecating just about anywhere that pleases them. Frankly, it ís off-putting, and small wonder why Aperture-brand mental institutions are being phased out in favor of more orphanages.

d. Seniors
Frail, brittle hands make holding science devices difficult. Most were born before the advent of science, and can become confused and disoriented when asked to participate in relatively simple tests (teleportation, invisibility, adjusting esteem levels of orphan children).
Known personnel

Cave Johnson.
Cave Johnson (Founder and CEO, 1953 - 1976)

The isometric Aperture Science offices from the "Portal is Free" video.
On ApertureScience.com, "1975", "1978" and "1979" were originally given as the date for Aperture Science ceasing manufacturing only shower curtains, Johnson's mercury poisoning, and Johnson's kidney failure, respectively. These dates were later retconned to 1973, 1974 and 1976, as seen in the updated Aperture Science timeline.

Aperture Science logo variants
As with Black Mesa, the Aperture Science logo is directly based on the company's name, appearing as a stylized, partially closed diaphragm, with an aperture in the center. An "aperture" is an adjustable opening in an optical instrument, such as a camera or telescope, that controls the amount of light passing through a lens or onto a mirror. An "aperture" can also simply refer to any opening. However the name "Aperture Science" is likely random, as it was merely chosen for its shower curtains to appear "more hygienic". Dog's unique eye is also an aperture in a diaphragm; the Emergency Intelligence Incinerator is also topped by a diaphragm.

GLaDOS (Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System) is the sentient computer system managing the Aperture Laboratories and the guide of the Aperture Science computer-aided Enrichment Center.

The earliest known appearance of the name "GLaDOS" is in 1982, where version 1.07, and later 1.07a and 1.09, is operating Aperture Science's Enrichment Center Test Subject Application Process. The precise relation between this version of GLaDOS and the one appearing in Portal is unknown. Aperture also started using a BBS system in 1973, which was later managed by GLaDOS as late as 1997.

In 1986, while Aperture Science is working on the 'Portal' project, one of Cave Johnson's dying wishes, they learn of Black Mesa's work on a similar portal technology. In response to this, construction of the first Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System (GLaDOS) begins in the Aperture Laboratories with the aim of accelerating the 'Portal' project, and beat their rival company. In 1996, after a decade spent bringing the Disk Operating System parts to a state of more or less basic functionality, work begins on the Genetic Lifeform component. During that time, the Aperture Science Red Phone plan is implemented in case GLaDOS appears to become sentient and godlike, requiring an employee to sit by a red phone on a desk in GLaDOS chamber's entrance hall. In 1997, GLaDOS's version is 3.11.

In May 200-, the untested AI of GLaDOS is finally completed and is activated for the first time as one of the planned activities on Aperture's first annual bring-your-daughter-to-work day. Within one picosecond of activation, GLaDOS becomes self-aware, and two picoseconds later, she locks down the entire facility, trapping all inside, and begins a permanent testing cycle, aiming to beat Black Mesa in the race for the portal technology. She effectively loses this race however, as the Black Mesa Incident occurs mere days later, which in turn diverts all attention from rescuing the trapped Aperture employees.

In order to quell the rebelling scientists, GLaDOS floods the Enrichment Center with a deadly neurotoxin. Survivors of this attack subsequently fit GLaDOS with a Morality Core, which lessens her murderous intentions and prevents her from releasing more neurotoxins. GLaDOS's testing continues through the years, and the number of surviving employees dwindle.

Portal
Test Chamber 05 during Chell's tests.Over twenty years after GLaDOS's takeover of Aperture Laboratories, she awakens Chell from some sort of stasis pod in a Relaxation Vault, speaking to her as if she is just a mandatory Test Subject. Chell is released from the vault through a portal, and begins to progress through a series of Test Chambers, utilizing the completed Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device, with GLaDOS constantly monitoring her progress with security cameras. The chambers show signs of decay and neglect, and GLaDOS shows signs of instability. Throughout the tests, GLaDOS continues to act like everything is perfectly mandatory, giving apparently scripted responses. Despite this, she lets slip several phrases to suggest otherwise, and sometimes malfunctions in the middle of sentences (also showing that she is programmed to speak in other languages, such as Spanish, using machinery translation). She also continuously promises that cake and grief counseling will be available at the conclusion of the test.

When Chell eventually makes it to Test Chamber 16, GLaDOS informs her that the appropriate chamber has been replaced with a live fire course designed for Military Androids, simply wishing Chell the best of luck and letting her into the chamber, where she is met with Aperture Science Sentry Guns for the first time. It is in this chamber that Chell discovers a hidden alcove in the wall, where desperate messages were scribbled on the walls by former Aperture employee Doug Rattmann, who seemed to have gone slightly mad while being trapped in the facility. The most prominent message, "the cake is a lie", is written several times. Chell then proceeds to the next chamber, where GLaDOS introduces her to the Companion Cube, which Chell must carry through the chamber. She once again finds messages from Rattmann, who seems to have become insanely attached to his Companion Cube, and grieved over its "death", and was outlandish towards GLaDOS's comments about it. At the end of the Chamber, Chell's Cube meets the same fate when she is forced to incinerate it in an Aperture Science Emergency Intelligence Incinerator in order to proceed. According to GLaDOS, Chell "euthanized" her Cube more quickly than any other Test Subject, something GLaDOS feels calls for congratulations.

At the conclusion of the test, Chell travels on an Aperture Science Unstationary Scaffold away from the final Test Chamber. But instead of the constantly promised cake, the young woman is met with an incinerator, which GLaDOS calmly states will not damage the ASHPD. Using the weapon, she narrowly escapes certain death. It is here that GLaDOS reveals her true nature, stuttering on the word "I", before trying to convince Chell that this was all part of the test. Chell ignores her, and journeys through the maintenance areas. Throughout the decaying and neglected maintenance areas, Chell is constantly trying to be convinced by GLaDOS to return to the testing area, through the use of the Aperture Science Speaker System. With hints and scribblings by Rattmann guiding her along the right path, after constant admonishment from GLaDOS, as well as a massive Sentry Gun ambush, Chell finally finds herself in GLaDOS's main control room, where the A.I. has been sitting alone for over twenty years. GLaDOS then attempts to deploy a "surprise" to eliminate Chell, but ends up accidentally detaching her Morality Core, which Chell promptly incinerates.

GLaDOS activating the Personality Cores and extinguishing the cake's candle with one of her remotely activated mechanical arms.GLaDOS, now free of her morality, begins to flood the Enrichment Center with neurotoxins as she did before. She notes that the Morality Core must have had some ancillary responsibilities, and that she cannot shut off the Rocket Sentry in her control room. Chell uses this to her advantage, and uses portals to redirect the rockets back at GLaDOS, detaching and incinerating her Personality Cores one by one. As the battle continues, GLaDOS mocks Chell and tries to make her feel bad about herself. She also makes a comment apparently regarding the Combine invasion, stating that she was "the only one standing between us and them", implying she was keeping the Combine from entering the facility. Before the neurotoxins can kill her, Chell destroys GLaDOS who is apparently sucked through a portal to the outside with parts of her generator. Chell is also dragged with her, and she ends up among GLaDOS's remains on the parking lot in front of the Aperture labs entrance, only to be taken back inside into stasis by the Party Escort Bot.

Despite GLaDOS's apparent destruction however, only a part of her is destroyed. She reactivates a room full of Personality Cores and re-captures Aperture Laboratories, filing a letter to Chell, telling her that she is still alive and "not even angry" at her, but not before extinguishing a candle on the cake, which was not a lie after all.

Post-Portal
GLaDOS talking to Chell after waking up in her ruined chamber.During the centuries after Chell is put back into stasis by the Party Associate, GLaDOS and her Personality Cores take control of the Enrichment Center once more, which is heavily damaged after the explosion created by GLaDOS's partial destruction.

When Chell is finally awakened by Wheatley, the two make their way across the facility in an attempt to escape. GLaDOS does not reveal herself at first however, and waits until the two are on an elevator, before overriding the controls, causing them to descend. Chell and Wheatley are forced into the remains of GLaDOS's control room, where they come across the A.I. once more. GLaDOS is extremely bitter towards Chell for "murdering" her, but wants to repair their "relationship" for the good of science. GLaDOS then forces Chell to complete more tests through the Enrichment Center, but is also trying to keep the damaged building stable at the same time, often reluctantly allowing Chell to navigate through the maintenance areas to proceed.

GLaDOS's model upside down, showing the similarities with a woman's body.GLaDOS is stored in a large octagonal chamber set within Aperture Laboratories, reminiscent of Half-Life's Test Lab C-33/a in Black Mesa's Sector C, where the Anti-Mass Spectrometer is found. In the small lobby area of the chamber connected to the rest of the facility with a door and a Material Emancipation Grid, the Aperture Science Red Phone is located next to four "pillars" (according to the model name). Under a concealed door, a Rocket Sentry is kept, seemingly for security, and numerous monitor screens line the walls and encircle GLaDOS. An Emergency Intelligence Incinerator is also present, for unknown use, and can be opened from a switch located in a small "bunker" (as said in its model name).
GLaDOS's components themselves are suspended from the ceiling in the center of the chamber, and make up all of the chamber's height:
The topmost component is a large, dark disc attached to the bright ceiling. It is the start of GLaDOS's generator running until her "body" (according to the model name).
Right underneath is a cylinder with grooves connected to the metal walls with large pipes. The walls are filled with bright rectangular holes. All the cables starting below arrive there.
Under is a smaller barrel-like device covered with panels, and also connected to the walls with large pipes. A few panels are missing and show the circuits underneath.
Then the walls are in concrete from there to the ground, and GLaDOS's four discs are found. The The Orange Box Prima Guide states that the discs "represent each aspect" of her Personality Cores, but it is unknown what that means exactly. Right below the discs is a transparent maintenance platform where the Intelligence Core is sent during GLaDOS's partial destruction. How it is accessed is unknown. The two discs from the edges are covered with the Aperture Laboratories logo, the two discs from the middle with GLaDOS's name. The four "pillars" found in the chamber's lobby may also be related to the discs and the Personality Cores.
Under the platform, all the wires seen above start. Four large screens and GLaDOS's "body" are found, attached to a cuboid-like structure, which makes up the end of the generator; on it is found a small sign with on it the words "model: GLaDOS", "code # 081-354-56", and "Aperture Science", as well as a red struck circle, and a red triangle. Under her is another transparent platform, accessed with stairs, then the tiled ground. GLaDOS's "body" is a piece of delicate hardware constantly swinging (whose swinging speed increases each time a core is destroyed), attached to which are her four Personality Cores that make up the bulk of GLaDOS's character; the Morality Core, a purple core with a rather diluted pupil and two dots installed into GLaDOS to stop her from flooding the Enrichment Center with a deadly neurotoxin; the Curiosity Core, an orange core with an average size pupil and four dots that is insatiably curious about everything around it (it even recognizes Chell as "the lady from the test"); the Knowledge Core (also known as "Crazy Core"), a blue core with a very dilated pupil and six dots that gives an interesting cake recipe, and the Emotion Core (also known as "Aggressive Core" or "Anger Sphere"), a red core with a rather small pupil and eight dots that emits angry growling sounds. When looked upon from a certain angle, GLaDOS looks like a woman - with a head, a chest, a large abdomen and two arms - hanging upside down by her feet, an arm bound around her legs (an effect actually intended by the team), making her look imprisoned in some sort of bondage / torture posture.[6] Unfortunately, it is unknown what part is the Disk Operating System, and what part is the Genetic Lifeform. GLaDOS's "body" is likely one of them, and the four disks and four "pillars" in the entrance lobby may have something to do with it.
When Chell detaches all of GLaDOS's Cores in Portal, the Cores are all sent in a different location, making it harder and harder for Chell to catch them. While being in these locations, they appear to be still linked to GLaDOS somehow with a greenish, semi-transparent beam / thread. It is only when grabbed by Chell and destroyed in the Emergency Intelligence Incinerator that their effect on GLaDOS stops.

"Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: Why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: Why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the ass on the way out, because you are fired."
―Cave Johnson

PRESENT DAY

Currently, Aperture Industries is a corporate mega-conglomorate that acts as the goverment of a large nation, with it's citizens refered to as 'employees'. It is ruled by GLaDOS with an authoritarian iron fist. All citizens are watched 24/7 by cameras. And all criminals are subject to horrible genetic testing.
