David Santorez, due to his immense girth, is directed to land just outside the arcology city. Despite the toxic, noxious fumes, and barely breathable atmosphere outside the enclosed supercities, Mr. Santorez somehow makes it to the gate of the arcology. There, he is met by a squad of paramilitary officers, armed with HESH rifle grenades and wearing full NBC. Being vehemently anti-human and mammalian in general, he makes the fairly idiotic mistake of insulting the well-trained, well-armed officers.

Not wanting to take any chances, Mr. Santorez's laughter, taunts, and threats towards the "pitifully armed river dredge" is met by a volley of high-explosive rifle grenades. These rounds, being squash warheads, have a nasty side effect of spalling. Allow me to explain here exactly how a HESH warhead works against an armoured target, and you can assume that the thick skin of a dinosaur is roughly analogous to a thin-skinned tank:

As the warhead hits the hull (or in this case, body), it squashes into a flat pancake of high explosive, which is then detonated. This high explosive charge rarely has any significant penetration power, however it's compressive shockwave is devastating against unprotected armour (aka tanks or light vehicles which lack a spall liner; or in this case...a rib cage.). The compressive blast from the explosion often travels through steel, or an equivalent and causes the metal inside to explode outwards, shredding crewmen and internal organs alike.

Now, this normally would be bad enough, but internal organs such as lungs, intestines, stomachs and hearts (okay not hearts) all contain air, or some form of pressure. When this pressure is violently disrupted (as in an explosion), it tends to press against a single area with a massive amount of force. This often leads to ruptured lungs, bruised organs, burst blood vessels and ruptured intestines (which leads to a septic infection if not properly treated) in concussion injuries (like a nearby grenade or rocket exploding).

Combine this with what is known as "hydrostatic shock" (slightly disputed, some nutjobs think that pressure and waves cannot travel through a mostly wet internal system and cause damage), where a higher PSI (pounds per square inch) caused by a penetrating projectile or concussive blast wave causes a large amount of wounding away from the initial entry wound. This translates into higher PSI = high chance of brain injury (mostly hemorrhaging, and other injuries, but brain hemorrhaging is the most important). The higher chance of a brain injury means that incapacitation time has a higher chance of being closer to zero (seconds).

As the HESH rounds impact against his chest, Mr. Santorez has only a split second to think, which is hardly enough to form a thought, but still gives him time to form the emotion of extreme fear. The explosions ripple off successfully, six in total, as chunks of flesh and bone and rip into his internal organs. The compressive shockwave from the massive, near simultaneous blast of HE causes rupturing of both lungs, his large and small intestine, esophagus, and stomach. Bone fragments embed themselves in what ever remains, slicing through blood vessels, arteries, and whatever organs survived the initial blast. Hydrostatic shock takes into effect, causing massive brain hemorrhaging and near instantaneous incapacitation, sparing him the terrible fate of being left to die. Already three seconds into the blast, blood begins to pour from Santorez's nose, although by this time he has already been fully incapacitated (read: killed).

Thus, ends the attempted dinosaur tyranny takeover the Soviet Technocracy, and everyone (except David Santorez) lived happily ever after.

Biography: Born out of crafted viral tissue in a vat, rather than by infecting life, Azrael is a pure Rethast. The appearance of a creature of the same race that had destroyed the Ananke shipyards and three hundred thousand Soviet trainees is startling, but not unexpected. The first force on the scene is the 32nd Naval Strike Squadron, composed of two frigates (the Colossus and Wretch), and a destroyer (the Blitzer). Despite overwhelming firepower and numerical superiority, the 32nd NSS is unable to overcome the raw power of psychic energy emanating from the vessel that the Rethast is traveling in. The crews of all threes succumb to the destructive aura, and either go completely mad, attacking each other and the ship, or kill themselves.

Eventually, the AIs of all three vessels are forced to vent atmosphere in order to prevent their ships' destruction by their former crewmen, and begin to engage the Rethast vessel on their own terms, being immune to psychic energies. Despite the proactive defensive stance taken by the AIs, the Battle of the Ananke Shipyards has taught the Rethast much about Soviet Naval doctrine, and the AIs are unable to keep up with the alien spacecraft.

Within twenty minutes, a small number of Rethast ships have been destroyed, compared to the loss of the both the Colossus and the Wretch, and extensive battle damage to the Blitzer. As the small planet closest to the Rethast fleet looks on in horror as the Blitzer opens a wormhole to escape at the very last second, the Soviet Army and Sterninfantrie detachments on the ground are already preparing experimental technologies to defend themselves against psychic assaults.

Using battle data and eyewitnesses from the Battle of Ananke and other psychic engagements by the Soviet Military (most notably the near complete loss of a colony by unknown aliens, referred to as the "mind worm species" in Soviet nomenclature), specially designed helmets utilising Faraday cages and technology taken from EMP protection in main battle tanks is applied to combat helmets. These specially designed helmet liners, composed of a composite aluminum laminate, block most of the harmful effects of the psychic aura (mostly insanity inducing effects, the depression and intense fear is still noticable and requires powerful will to block out).

With this new, experimental advantage, the Rethast are caught by surprise as Soviet soldiers advance, with some reluctance (although it's better than the drop-to-the-ground-and-cry-scream-or-beg of Ananke), behind columns of light tanks and massive artillery support. Gas masks, along with the full NBC protection measures keep the Soviet ground pounders safe from the Rethast mist and viral infection. Given this staunch, yet mostly futile without orbital support, resistance, the Rethast begin employing slightly different strategies.

Mutants of horrible, ill-conceived and sinful creation are unleashed upon the Soviet soldiers, intending to break their morale the old-fashioned way, through sheer shock and awe. Despite facing down demonic creatures, the Soviet military calls upon it's most unstable, yet most powerful (against horrible mutants and the Rethast) force. The Stosstruppen, men (the only job where women are excluded, since all of them are horribly raped and return catatonic) who have been sent through a literal Hell to train against the most evil enemies of the Technocracy (primarily the forces of Chaos, Cthulhu, Jesus' Second Coming, etc., as the Technocracy lacks Space Marines/Quakeguy/Dave Petraeus), are deployed against the Rethast mutations.

Initially, massive successes (and massive amounts of fratricide) are reported on all fronts by the high command of the local Sterninfantrie garrison, which had by then assumed total control of the entire military forces on the planet's surface. However, the Rethast unleash the one mutant that not even the Stosstruppen can stand. Hordes of small, flesh eating spiders are soon stumbled upon (a native creature of the planet, actually), and entire divisions of Stosstruppen are routed from the sheer psychologically innate fear. (Apparently, Hell has some fucking badass baby spiders)

The Rethast soon regain the initiative, even against overwhelming odds, and the Army and Stosstruppen forces are pushed back to the arcologies. Only the hardcore, balls-to-the-motherfucking-wall Sterninfantrie face the Rethast in open combat, including a single division that had been cut off and surrounded by three sides. The division, despite being destroyed completely (and literally), managed to take at least three times their number of Rethast mutant and soldier, even going so far as to engage in hand-to-hand and bayonet combat (with appropriately devastating losses); and their story managed to renew a little bit of morale (and slightly shock the Rethast as to exactly how nutjob the Soviets are), tipping the initiative back to the Soviet Army.

Slowly, but like a reawakening giant, the Soviet Army, the thousands of private military companies and paramilitary units, and tens of other of armed, organised forces begin to push out of the arcologies. The Rethast managed to regain some numbers by absorbing the Sterninfantrie division, although seeing their former comrades in arms being turned into hideous abominations only tipped the initiative even further towards the Soviets. The sight of their brothers being turned into sin against God abominations and not being allowed to rest properly enraged even the notoriously difficult to enrage Soviet Army, causing them to engage in daredevil, balls-to-the-wall last stands, bayonet charges against the Rethast infantry proper, and even unarmed combat with Rethast mutants and Extinctioners themselves.

Within days, however, the manpower reserves of the Soviet Army were reduced horribly, although by now flamethrower detachments had been assigned to the Stosstruppen forces, allowing them to advance, even when approached by the spider-like monstrosities of the Rethast (who by now had begun using these specifically against the Stosstruppen divisions in an attempt to break morale). However, even as the enemy body count continued to rise (well past the original count of 50,000 Rethast proper, now due to infection levels among the civilians), the Rethast's numbers were actually growing, not shrinking.

Just as the last hope for the Soviet Army, having launched one last counteroffensive to try to push back the hordes of Rethast (and mostly succeeding in buying breathing room), a Soviet Naval Task Force (all Task Forces are ad-hoc), lead by the largest ships of the fleet, appeared in-system. The flotilla was led by two gigantic Emma-class battleships (Allanean-made Management Buyout-class superbattleships; the Katherine and Alice), six Rage-class battlecruisers (the Anger, the Fury, the Torment, the Fear, the Desperation, the Hopelessness), and the still heavily damaged Blitzer (which would function in an auxiliary command and EW role for the duration of the battle).

The Rethast, taken aback by the appearance of multiple heavy vessels turn their attentions from the orbit to the system's asteroid belt. Having abandoned orbital superiority, the Soviet Navy is finally able to operate as intended. Within minutes of leaving orbit, submarine-launched nuclear missiles, nuclear cruise missiles, thousands of fighter and bomber aircraft, and Soviet Marine infantry numbering in the hundreds of thousands are deployed by the submersible warships. Despite having one Grigori in orbit, the Rethast are still unable to stop the sheer amount of nuclear MIRVs and missiles launched, and taken aback by such willingness to completely condemn the planet to nuclear winter.

Nuclear explosions rock the entire planet, as the remaining Army, Sterninfantrie and Stosstruppen soldiers launch the final phase of the counteroffensive to retake lost ground, with fresh reinforcement from the Soviet Marine Corps. As the Rethast are suddenly caught between an approaching Task Force, and a massively reinvigorated Soviet ground campaign (what is it like the third time they've been brought back from the brink of a total rout?), they decide to pull their losses and retreat.

Despite this seeming victory for the Soviet military, and now having attained complete orbital superiority, the planet was for all intents and purposes lost to the Rethast. Massive civilian infection rates, a gigantic death toll and a horrible twisting the landscape itself rendered the planet almost uninhabitable for years. Kessler Syndrome in high orbit from the massive amounts of orbital debris would reduce the planet to having virtually no benefits besides the mineral veins and living space. Strategic advantages would be almost nil. Even if the various companies specialising in orbital cleanup were drafted, it was estimated that it would take a total of 120 years to make high orbit useful again, and in the meantime hundreds of destroyed satellites, including nuclear missile buses, were drifting closer and closer to the atmosphere from LEO.

Even though the Rethast were pushed out by the combined forces of the Soviet Military, it would be over a century before the planet could become useful, and whether or not the planet could be cleared of Rethast mutations and viral infection was another question altogether. In all, the entire battle could be seen as a complete Pyhrric victory for the Soviet military.

The planet was, for all intents and purposes, dead. The order was given, and the surviving forces of the campaign (yes even the Navy) were evacuated. After an hours long nuclear, chemical, and biological bombardment, the planet was given quarentine for the next thirty centuries and declared no longer a part of the Soviet Technocracy.

Biography: Born in a small town in the central senestrian highlands, Arleno Elaris had a fondness for nature bordering on the extreme during his childhood. At his seventh birthday, he received an ancient, worn camera reputed to have been hand-made in 1904 by Gaius Rossi himself. With this tool in hand, he delved into the world of photography, eventually becoming known region-wide for his landscape and wildlife photos. In his 20s, he traveled all across Haven, from the wet islands of Terran Tribes, to the baking-hot center of the Doomani desert, the arctic wastes of Bretton and Olmedreca, and more. He even traveled out of Haven to such places as Mazara Palani, where he (along with a company or two of military bodyguards) took some of the finest artistic pictures of Mazaran wildlife in history (and also some of the only such pictures).

As he neared his thirties, he attracted the attention of the Senestrian Space Agency, and accepted their gracious offer of a trip to the Moon. While there, he took many well-known lunar photographs with a 120-megapixel large-format digital camera designed for use in the harsh lunar conditions. From expansive landscape pictures to simple portraits of Moonbase personnel, he painted a vivid vision of the Senestrian moon program. He is now back to earth, expanding his collection of exotic camera gear from all across Haven.
