S.A. Kane, seventh President of the Crystal Castle Republic.
Sidney Abel Kane
(1898 - 1903)
S.A. Kane was the seventh president of the Crystal Castle Republic. He first got noticed in the baseball circuit, putting up modest numbers; domestically, he was responsible for engineering the creation, and rise, of the Young Person's Athletic Association, or YPAA, which still exists today and aims to put traditional, republican values into practice by developing a healthy body, mind, and spirit through things such as lectures, discussions, and group outings, similar to the real life Sokol movement in Slavic countries. Although considered "above politics," the YPAA was a significant force in the development of Norfolkite nationalism and patriotism, which found expression in its various activities; the YPAA is open to men and women, and has branches throughout Free Norfolk City and Norfolk-in-Esvanovia.
He also promoted the precursors of what would become the time honored traditions of the neighbourhood watch, little free libraries, communty leagues and block parties in Free Norfolk City, encouraging boroughs to institute a widespread implementation of each; the oldest little free library in the country, the one outside the entrance to the Crystal Castle—originally established before his presidency, it was where you could procure copies of the official gazette of the Norfolkite government;
which traditionally offers fully disclosed economic reports, presidential manifestos, and the like, was named a landmark of major importance in 1998 on the then-anniversary of Kane's election to the presidency.
His foreign policy, however, resulted in significant criticism; chiefly, his signing of the Double Zero Lease and the establishment of the Rin Leased Territory.
which cost Free Norfolk City significantly in Katase, where the republicans were hoping for continued support; Kane's decision to shift gears and work with the monarchists was seen as a betrayal; in fact, Kane was the first president in Norfolkite history to face an attempted impeachment when Vernon Puddephatt, a member of Congress, condemned Kane for having sold out the country's values by acquiring Rin and stabbing the republican agitators in the back, and claimed that had he won the presidency instead of Kane, that he would never have done either. However, while the House of Representatives voted to impeach Kane, the Senate declined to follow suit. This led Puddephatt to try to rig the midterms in his favor, but pro-Kane supporters won most of the votes. His relationship with the popular socialite Ysanna Greensly would have secured him entrance into the history books even had he not become president. His father was an undertaker, and taught him routinely about the value of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. During his time in office, he oversaw a complete revamp of the political and economic mechanisms of the country, curbed what had been seen as the excesses of Company rule in Esvanovia (though he refrained from ending it as had been hoped by the more radical of reformers) and oversaw the first rumblings on the politicial fringes.
