The Big Green Machine (The Kane Presidency)

S.A. Kane, seventh President of the Crystal Castle Republic.

Sidney Abel Kane
(1898 - 1903)

S.A. Kane was the seventh president of the Crystal Castle Republic. He first got noticed in the baseball circuit, putting up modest numbers; domestically, he was responsible for engineering the creation, and rise, of the Young Person's Athletic Association, or YPAA, which still exists today and aims to put traditional, republican values into practice by developing a healthy body, mind, and spirit through things such as lectures, discussions, and group outings, similar to the real life Sokol movement in Slavic countries. Although considered "above politics," the YPAA was a significant force in the development of Norfolkite nationalism and patriotism, which found expression in its various activities; the YPAA is open to men and women, and has branches throughout Free Norfolk City and Norfolk-in-Esvanovia.

He also promoted the precursors of what would become the time honored traditions of the neighbourhood watch, little free libraries, communty leagues and block parties in Free Norfolk City, encouraging boroughs to institute a widespread implementation of each; the oldest little free library in the country, the one outside the entrance to the Crystal Castle—originally established before his presidency, it was where you could procure copies of the official gazette of the Norfolkite government;

which traditionally offers fully disclosed economic reports, presidential manifestos, and the like, was named a landmark of major importance in 1998 on the then-anniversary of Kane's election to the presidency.

His foreign policy, however, resulted in significant criticism; chiefly, his signing of the Double Zero Lease and the establishment of the Rin Leased Territory.

which cost Free Norfolk City significantly in Katase, where the republicans were hoping for continued support; Kane's decision to shift gears and work with the monarchists was seen as a betrayal; in fact, Kane was the first president in Norfolkite history to face an attempted impeachment when Vernon Puddephatt, a member of Congress, condemned Kane for having sold out the country's values by acquiring Rin and stabbing the republican agitators in the back, and claimed that had he won the presidency instead of Kane, that he would never have done either. However, while the House of Representatives voted to impeach Kane, the Senate declined to follow suit. This led Puddephatt to try to rig the midterms in his favor, but pro-Kane supporters won most of the votes. His relationship with the popular socialite Ysanna Greensly would have secured him entrance into the history books even had he not become president. His father was an undertaker, and taught him routinely about the value of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. During his time in office, he oversaw a complete revamp of the political and economic mechanisms of the country, curbed what had been seen as the excesses of Company rule in Esvanovia (though he refrained from ending it as had been hoped by the more radical of reformers) and oversaw the first rumblings on the politicial fringes.

Lights! Camera! Amadeus! (The DeLamater Presidency)

A.D. DeLamater, eighth President of the Crystal Castle Republic.

Amadeus Dean DeLamater
(1903 - 1908)

A.D. DeLamater was the eighth president of the Crystal Castle Republic. DeLamater was a fixture in Norfolkite politics, representing the borough of Shaiburg; to this day, he is the first and only president from that borough. He was one of Puddephatt's closest allies in Congress, and was seen as being an underrated choice for the presidency. He

He was Puddephatt's pick for vice president during the 1898 election, but won the 1903 election handedly—defeating various candidates such as Egon Blofeld-Grande, who was

he was best known as the first president to demand an apology from Garbania for what he called the "vile excesses" of the suppression of riots after the country's expulsion from the Garbanian colonial empire, a reference to the Shaiburg Massacre, but the Garbanians ignored his request—it would not be the first, nor the last.

DeLamater also oversaw significant developments at home including the beginnings of the world renowned public transportation system, and the creation of Nollywood, the Norfolkite movie industry.

"This Land is Made For Me, Not You!" (Ogtogo)

Postby Free Norfolk City » Sat Aug 17, 2024 11:15 am

Image

An Ogtogan man reads a nationalist tract at a cultural festival.

One of the islands that constitute the Totecan Islands (collectively known as the State of Toteco), Ogtogo has long been described as the thorn in the Norfolkite lion's paw. It is the biggest foreign policy concern in the history of the Crystal Castle Republic, and every president has had to deal with it; the issue is considered the biggest anchor to the proper development of Toteco, which is poorer than the rest of Norfolk-in-Esvanovia. The island has an indigenous majority population, but sizeable minorities stemming from its days under Garbanian colonial rule; it is a tropical island, with numerous beachside resorts and other tourist traps. Notable sites in Ogtogo include Fort Makinson, a trading post of the Monmouth Bay Trading Company, the Denamiel Plantation, and the island's capital, Sainte François de Mamiel.

It is also home to the OPBA, the Ogtogo Public Broadcasting Agency, which was a pioneer in the history of public broadcasting in the Crystal Castle Republic, particularly when it came to public access; in 1984, the notorious punk rock band, Le Pieds-Noirs, famously sang their smash hit single, "Enme Prissies Fuck Off!" which caused such a significant stir that a flash mob of young people suddenly manifested itself in the central square of the capital, where they sang the song in unison, waving banners and flags. "My misspent youth would have been empty without seeing the power of the people in action as a teenager," said one attendee of the event decades later. "I couldn't imagine where else I'd have rather been." Copycat events were soon recorded throughout the rest of Norfolk-in-Esvanovia, Free Norfolk City proper and even in the Rin Leased Territory, with the authorities in each noting that the mobs peacefully dispersed once they felt they had sufficiently made it known: Ogtogo's people did not want to end up under the Hæstirétt's heel.

Another song, "Chuck the Enme Down the Pit," sung by a popular Totecan nationalist activist, inspired the infamous custom of making effigies of Aureumterran figures, or just random Enme, and throwing them into pits, ditches and makeshift graves; such customs, while largely confined to Ogtogo, have spread into the rest of the country, with non-Totecans acting out of solidarity. It is also not uncommon for targets at Ogtogan gun ranges and dart boards to sport the faces of Aureumterran politicians. However, it should be noted that public opinion is not entirely hostile, with many advocating peace and reconciliation; in the popular 1995 drama film, Gangster's Paradise, the protagonist, a rookie teacher (portrayed by the popular Norfolkite actress from Rin, Kiyomi Kobayakawa) charged with trying to rehabilitate troubled youths, stops her students from carrying out the custom, calling it reprehensible and that "we cannot carry on as we have in the past," which sparked protests from Totecan nationalists outside theatres where it was played.

While most of the governments of the world recognize the Norfolkite claim over Ogtogo, there is a rival claim from Aureumterra, but this claim is disregarded by the vast majority of historians as flying in the face of reality. The Aureumterran claim has been made since Garbanian rule, and is believed to have started when the Garbanians rejected an Aureumterran offer of a marriage pact due to political and cultural differences. The Aureumterrans pressed their claim on Ogtogo during and after the transition of Garbania's Esvanovian colonies to Norfolkite rule, but the fledging Crystal Castle Republic was able to deter them from attempting to enforce it—however, they still continued to promote it, much to the chagrin of the Norfolkites and the Totecans, both of whom flatly reject the claim.

Most historians agree that Ogtogo is one of Norfolk-in-Esvanovia's most diverse parts, and not just due to the Enme presence; we're talking natural diversity in terms of flora and fauna, with many researchers making regular visits to document and categorize both. The aforementioned Kobayakawa's mother, Kuriko, accumulated a significant collection of flora, and wrote even more about it, donating her collection to the National Archives upon her death. The Monmouth Bay Trading Company has numerous trading posts throughout the island, each managed by an overseer; the first, Fort Astolfo, was named for Teodoro Astolfo, who, at some point, was given the position of the island's majordomo, responsible for overseeing all of the company's operations. The Astolfo family retains a significant presence on the island after all these years, as do several other Norfolkite families established by male Norfolkite traders who acquired Totecan wives. The last trading post established on Ogtogo was Fort Centralia, which was established in 1867, just one year before the Norfolkites reluctantly declared independence. Each of these forts function today as company towns, much like those found elsewhere in Norfolk-in-Esvanovia.

Fran's Fine! (The Nanny State)

Postby Free Norfolk City » Mon Aug 19, 2024 12:20 am

Image

President Frances Elena Tuttolomondo-McIntyre and Vice President Yolanda Dupras-Amero at a political event.

The Norfolkite welfare state, affectionately known to citizens as the nanny state, came into existence during the sixties, during the administration of Frances Elena Tuttolomondo-McIntyre, the Crystal Castle Republic's nineteenth president. Best friends since childhood, the two were frustrated by what they saw as cultural stagnation, political complacency and a middling economy. Their story begins, however, not in the halls of Congress, but in elementary school, where the two befriended one another quickly over a mutual love for baseball, watching the St. Louisville Cardinals practically religiously. The St. Louisville Cardinals, one of the very few baseball clubs to have never been relegated, even had their picture taken for an article in a gameday program, highlighting their work serving Hi-C and Fluffernutters to the crowd as junior staff. The two were positively ecstatic, but never in a million years would they have ever anticipated their rise to fame in the world of politics.

Franny, as she was known to her family and friends, was born to Vittorio Emanuele Tuttolomondo and Renésmée McIntyre, modest and hard working middle class parents; while 'Yola' was born to Émile Dupras and Khaleesi Amero, who were also middle class. It seemed only fitting that Franny and Yola would become good friends given how close their parents had been; their fathers had worked together for the Monmouth Bay Trading Company, while their mothers were seamstresses. The young ladies grew up treating the other's parents as surrogate relatives, and the four went routinely together on road trips and vacations overseas to countries like AHSCA, Abetton and Katase.

Image

Frances and Yolanda spending time with a cat on a trip in Garbania. The two's observations on the on-and-off rival of the Republic, its former colonial master, would shape their future foreign policy efforts.

One might've confused the six for one whole family, the way they were practically inseparable from one another. However, while their parents were supporters of the status quo, Frances and Yolanda did not take long to seek alternatives; in high school, they joined the debate club, and extensively debated both fellow students and local guests on everything from school lunches to Ogtogo. Emmeline Daisy Bottomley, a notable salonnière, observed that when the two visited her salon as part of a student outreach effort, young and old men alike came to ogle them, but stayed for their speeches that were so fiery and passionate that many couldn't help but be enthralled. Bottomley herself would throw her support behind them when they ran the first time for office; while they did not get many votes at first, they did much better than expected, and the media began to report about the "fire-breathing progressive sirens" that were causing many to abruptly crash; to stop and stare, and most of all, listen. From transients to big businessmen, their audiences swelled to considerable numbers; it was upon their election to the Crystal Castle, and the beginning of their "New Deal" campaign, that the audiences began to thin; but definitely not enough to delay the undelayable.

The New Deal, supplanting the Fair Deal of presidents past, was Frances and Yolanda's plan to save the republic's national integrity. Their utilitarian considerations provoked widespread debate about the pros and cons of ideas such as private property and individualism; the two ran on a interventionist ticket, and advocated widespread reforms that can be comparable, both in scope and motivation, to the Great Society initiatives of Lyndon B. Johnson—a society where no one would go unfed, unaided, uneducated; upon being elected to office, the two's first order of business was to establish working groups to prepare a series of conferences and meetings that would be open to the public to attend, free of charge, and televised on the public broadcasting stations of each borough and Norfolk-in-Esvanovia; the two won a large majority of the Esvanovian vote, a reformist constituency that gave strong support to the New Deal. One of their first orders of business was to note how changes in technology were encroaching on privacy; a nationwide ban on advertisers' unfettered use of private information to create marketing schemes was implemented. The second order of business was to institute a rent control law, which mandated a strict, firm cap on rent increases at five percent max, among other things. While applauded by many as a progressive decision, it resulted in the creation of the Landlord Lives Matter movement, which alleged that the new government's blatant disregard for their lives was out of control. The movement exists to this day as a pressure group that presses the federal government to abolish the rent control law, and other "offenses to economic dignity," but the law is still on the books. The third order of business was to establish Pharmacliniques (a shortened name for the Clinique Pharmaceutiques) which were designed as a combination of clinics and pharmacies, designed for easier access to needed medical care, all throughout the country, from the boroughs of Free Norfolk City proper to the isolated communities in Esvanovia.

The Formation of the United Esvanovian States

Postby Free Norfolk City » Tue Aug 20, 2024 9:59 pm

Image

The Khedive of Qubboroland, Nurullah (II) Al-Hussein ibn Haitham Al-Waqi, meeting with Norfolkite representatives.

Prior to the establishment of the United Esvanovian States, as Norfolk-in-Esvanovia is known today, the Garbanians had largely left it a patchwork of everything from the property of the Monmouth Bay Trading Company to the indigenous territories such as Qubboroland, which was under the control of the Khedives, who called themselves Fireborn; their monikers including نسب النار (Nasab Al-Nar, Lineage of Fire) and نزول النار (Nuzul Al-Nar, Fire Descent). There was also the "crown land," which was under the direct authority of the Imperial Court, comprised of the amalgamation of former, proprietary colonies. Each one was largely autonomous, but largely deferred to the Imperial Court, who appointed, promoted and demoted their governors, provided funding, and assembled armies for defense in times of war. It was during the war in Vajas that Prime Minister Âbréhan de Lombelon ordered the complete mobilization of each domain, and a hastening of the "army tax," by which each domain was ordered to provide a set amount of soldiers for the defense of the realm.

In each domain, the people lined up to observe their superiors march past, en route to the capital, Charlottechurch, where the Imperial Garbanian Navy's Esvanovia Detachment was awaiting their arrival for transport to Vajas; they were put under the overall command of Prince Napoliyoun-Lexaundre de Viuepont, a member of one of the many cadet branches of the Imperial Family of Garbania; de Viuepont was considered one of the finest men of his generation, a man of true gallantry and taste. Eager to be relieved from his "too mundane" a post in Port Vonnegut, one of the several "entry points" in Ngombia, he readily accepted the position of Commander of the Armies-in-Vajas (Commandant des armées à Vajas) and on bended knee before the Emperor, he expressed a firm desire to utterly rout the Abettonese invaders. The Prince had, however, spent some time in Esvanovia, and the Khedive, who was the spiritual as well as temporal leader of the Qubboro soldiers sent to Vajas, sought him out, urging him to relay word that the time for reform was nigh. The Prince promised he would do so upon the end of the war.

From 1861 to 1865, each domain in what was once Garbania-in-Esvanovia followed orders relayed to them via the Imperial Court's appointed representative, the Gouverneur d'Esvanovie, Danyel Quincarnon, who operated in the capital, Charlottechurch, which sits on Monmouth Bay; much to the chagrin of the Monmouth Bay Trading Company, the city, and the bay as a whole, were reserved by the Imperial Court as crown land. The Monmouth Bay Trading Company sent agents to the Prince, urging him to ask the Imperial Court to give this land to them, but he, too, said he would do so after the war. One MBTC agent, H.G. Jones, frustrated with his superiors (and the lack of Garbanian interest in reforming, if not outright ending, Company rule), decided to take matters into his own hands; he rallied to him a small, but loyal, band of soldiers, and made his way to Dienstad, with the intent of carving his name into the history books.

Image

Harold Godwin Jones, better known as "Lovely" Jones, was a Norfolkite soldier of fortune who organized unauthorized military expeditions into Katase and the Sugar Islands with the intention of establishing colonies; such an enterprise was known at the time as filibustering. He declared the unrecognized "Free State of Jones" in the latter, abolishing slavery and marrying Sara Barnes, a local woman, but was unable to secure Garbanian backing and was forced to scrap the project.

The formation of the Légion Esvanovienne (Esvanovian Legion) in particular was conducted at the behest of the Prince, who considered it his personal unit; comprised of each domain's best and fairest, the Légion Esvanovienne would see action in a variety of battles, culminating in them leading the march of the victorious Garbanian armies into Sauville, the capital of Abetton. He issued orders to all soldiers to respect the property of citizens, to refrain from looting, and to even go as far as to assist in rebuilding, as if "their homes were your homes, their families were your families," which further cemented his legacy as a true knight. Prince Napoliyoun-Lexaundre de Viuepont was even, for a spell, considered an honorary king of Abetton, although he refused to exploit the situation in such a way, and left for Garbania upon being relieved by the Imperial Court; however, he spoiled his return home when, honoring his word to the Khedive and the MBTC, he asked the Emperor to consider their proposals; however, both were not only turned down, but the Emperor sent the Prince back to Ngombia, much to his chagrin; however, he took it in stride, and returned without much issue; rather, it was his soldiers who protested, wondering what he had done wrong. The Légion Esvanovienne, in particular, protested the strongest, but he told them to not cause trouble, and to return to their loved ones as soon as possible. They did so, but carried their grievances with them.

In 1868, the Crystal Castle Republic of Free Norfolk City was reluctantly established; Valdemard Lanthier, the prince's right hand man, was named its first president. The prince's decision to send him a message congratulating him provoked the wrath of the Emperor, who sent agents to "remind him of his place," which further inflammed tensions in Esvanovia, with soldiers of the Légion Esvanovienne protesting in their barracks, even after the prince relayed to them that he was in good health, and that the Emperor had spared him from potential harm. The prince, however, was no fool; he fled to Free Norfolk City in the cover of night, and remained there until the Emperor's death; Lanthier gave him shelter as an honored friend. The Légion Esvanovienne, when it discovered his flight, refused new orders, and slipped away to Free Norfolk City, settling in what is now considered the "Little Esvanovia" neighbourhood of the Borough of Queaxmar. This greatly displeased the Emperor, who was beginning to experience the dual combo of senility and paranoia, but Weyerlbert was adamant that he was on the right course; in 1873, he ordered a crackdown on the reformists, who were urging him to consider an end to the "feudal stagnation" gripping the country. However, some domains, including those led by imported Garbanian nobles, quietly either refused such orders, or tipped off their would-be victims, letting them slip away into hiding.

In 1891, the Garbanian ambassdor to Free Norfolk City, Anketil de Seyssel, announced to the Norfolkite government that it was to be given, with immediate effect, unconditional control over Garbania's Esvanovian territories; when the Norfolkite government protested, they were told that failure to accept the offer would result in the independence of these territories, and that there was a significant risk of civil war between the domains; wanting to avert such catastrophe, the Norfolkites reluctantly accepted the offer, and thus assumed direct control over them. However, the following year, the "First Summer of '92" occurred, with the myriad domains suddenly erupting in a "great, big wave of discord," which, while not to the point of outright violence (save a few isolated skirmishes and assassinations), still disturbed the fledging Norfolkite government.

Thus, President McCorquodale issued an order to each domain to come to the negotiating table; in essence, surrendering their authority to the federal government. The process was accomplished in several stages, resulting in a new centralized government of Norfolk-in-Esvanovia, and the replacement of the old feudal system with a new democracy. At first, the lords of the domains built in crown land, including Charlottechurch and the Monmouth Bay area, voluntarily surrendered their domains to the Norfolkites; thereafter, fearing that their loyalty would be questioned, many other domains followed; seventeen, including Danukland, failed to initially comply voluntarily, so they were ordered to do so, under the threat of military action. In return for surrendering their hereditary authority to the central government, the lords were re-appointed as non-hereditary governors of their former domains (which were renamed as provinces), but they could only name subordinates if the subordinates met qualification levels established by the central government, and hereditary stipends to retainers were paid by the central government, rather than by the governor, which was a move calculated to further weaken the traditional feudal ties. All titles and privileges were abolished with the passing of the Titles of Nobility Amendment to the Norfolkite Constitution, thus ensuring the definitive end of feudalism, most notably the seigneurial system.

From 1892 to 1897, Norfolk-in-Esvanovia consisted no longer of feudal, monarchial domains, but of democratic, republican provinces; the Norfolkites chose to preserve indigenous autonomy, and, controversially, much to the chagrin of local radicals, the monarchies that the indigenous peoples had served for generations; most notably, the Khedivate of Qubboroland. However, it should be noted that the indigenous peoples were not confined to bantustan-like areas, but were rather given proper autonomous regions, in which they could preserve their culture and way of life without federal interference. However, it was on 1898, the thirtieth anniversary of Norfolkite independence, that the federal government decided that further changes were needed; thus, the federal government alerted the governors of each province of their intent, which caused some worry among their ranks. There was also some concern among the indigenous leaders, even with the Khedive of Qubboroland's missive to each of them that he had "overseen the Norfolkite plan" and could vouch for its goodness.

The idea was simple: merge the provinces into states, after which no more further changes would be necessary. The indigenous leaders were immediately placated when the Norfolkites assured them that their regions would remain intact, that each new state would be bound by law and custom to abide by the prior arrangements, that they could not make any change on their own which would imperil the regions, and so on. The only question, then, was which provinces would be merged, and which would retain their existence; the province of Elizabethland, with its capital of Elizabethtown, was, for example, given word that they would become a state—Elizabethland had been established in honor of Lady Élizabeth Becdelièvre, whose family, the Becdelièvres, had established it as a proprietary colony; while all other proprietary colonies, charter colonies and Crown colonies were merged together to form provinces, which were then merged again to form the present-day states, Elizabethland is the sole remaining one, hence its state motto, "invictus maneo," which means "I remain unvanquished" in Latin. In fact, the capital of the state is Becdelièvre, and is home to the Becdelièvre Crows football team, one of the most successful and popular NFA (National Football Association) clubs since their inception.

However, the most pressing issue at hand, aside from the aforementioned, was where would the negotiations take place; ideally, most assumed, it'd have been Charlottechurch, which the Norfolkites had designed the capital of the whole of their Esvanovian possessions.

The Free State of Jones (and Other What Ifs)

Harold Godwin Jones was one of the many Norfolkite soldiers of fortunes and other would-be adventurers who sought personal glory overseas.

Harold Godwin Jones, better known as Lovely Jones, was a Norfolkite adventurer, filibuster and entrepreneur and, by some accounts a pirate; he had hoped to create the Free State of Jones; the great object of forming this state, his directive stated, being to provide a home for the dispersed and oppressed children of the Sugar Islands, and to regenerate and enlighten this benighted region. He formed a settlement, called Jonestown, and the islanders on the island he had landed upon, so smitten with him, christened the island Jonesland. However, the Free State of Jones did not last long because he failed to secure Garbanian backing, and the Treaty of Sauville all but killed his hopes of making a new fortune in Dienstad; especially with the Garbanians taking "Jonesland" for themselves, and putting the island under the control of the colonial government in Vajas; consequently, he, his wife Sara and his stepdaughter Cordelia, along with his supporters and numerous refugees, fled for Free Norfolk City, where he penned his memoirs, insisting that he had nothing but the utmost good of the people in mind and rebuking critics who accused him of opportunism.

Harold Godwin Jones, better known as Lovely Jones, was a Norfolkite adventurer, filibuster and entrepreneur and, by some accounts a pirate; born in the quaint town of Gaudreauville in Norfolk-in-Esvanovia, he had hoped to create the Free State of Jones; the great object of forming this state, his directive stated, being to provide a home for the dispersed and oppressed children of the Sugar Islands, and to regenerate and enlighten this benighted region. He formed a settlement, called Jonestown, which was to be its capital, and the islanders on the island he had landed upon, so smitten with him, christened the island Jonesland; however, the Free State of Jones did not last long because he failed to secure Garbanian backing, and the Treaty of Sauville all but killed his hopes of making a new fortune in Dienstad; especially with the Garbanians taking "Jonesland" for themselves, and putting the island under the control of the colonial government in Vajas; consequently, he, his wife Sara and his stepdaughter Cordelia, along with his supporters and numerous refugees, fled for Free Norfolk City, where he penned his memoirs, insisting that he had nothing but the utmost good of the people in mind and rebuking critics who accused him of opportunism.

Despite his staunch republican leanings, Lovely Jones inadvertedly created a political dynasty, with the Jones family having a status equivalent to that of the Kennedy and Roosevelt families in the real-life United States; however, that is not the object of this post; rather, the object is the Free State of Jones itself, and the myriad attempts of individual Norfolkites to accumulate fame, power and glory from 1555 to 1868, the three hundred and thirteen years of Garbanian colonial rule.

The Crystal Castle: The Symbol of Sovereignty

Postby Free Norfolk City » Fri Aug 23, 2024 11:00 pm

Image

The Crystal Castle, the foremost symbol of Norfolkite sovereignty.

Much like the White House or 10 Downing Street, the Crystal Castle is the home of the President of the Crystal Castle Republic. Originally the home of the Kings of Anmhonm, and then colonial governors from Garbania, the Crystal Castle was built atop a crystal mine at the behest of King Togradur (sometimes spelt Togradure), who wanted a central location from which to govern the Kingdom of Anmhonm; originally, throughout its history, when the reigning king died, Anmhonm changed its capital; traditionally, the home of the king is considered the capital, and each king had their own home until Togradur decided to christen Rishagaba as the capital, and it is there that he built the Crystal Castle, although the original version was most certainly not as impressive as today's is.

The Crystal Castle was where the Duc de Hyoyungachbachneegra, Kazamahl Kalagalathi, hosted the arrival of Emperor Pharamond, the first and only emperor of Garbania to visit the country, upon his marriage to the Anmhonmite princess, Rahkazira, uniting the two royal lineages into one; the Garbanians also absorbed the Anmhonmite peerage into their own. Pharamond was so enamoured with the Crystal Castle, he christened it the home of the colonial governors, and appointed the famous architect, Vuechahah Vunkhanthob, to make the first upgrades to the building; Kildendaud Zergamade, a renowned mosaicist, was also brought in to create vast, vivid mosaics depicting Anmhonmite and, later, colonial history.

Despite its already impressive fortifications, and its routine upgrades since its initial construction, it did not particularly see much combat after the Garbanian conquest of 1555, and from then until 1868, it was the site of numerous political festivals, such as the arrival of each new colonial governor, which required the creation of an ornate set of rituals, traditions and songs; indigenous activists consider this the colonial co-opting of Anmhonmite tradition, since initially it was the celebration of a new king that called for such things. Indeed, the Crystal Castle was seen as the symbol of Anmhonmite sovereignty; each member of the royal family was laid to rest in the Royal Crypt not that far from it, with the notable tradition of each tomb installed in such a way that it appears to be pointing towards it.

In 1868, Free Norfolk City declared independence as a republic, but decided to preserve the Crystal Castle, turning it into the home of the presidents; the myriad, long and winding halls of the complex, which once accomodated the byzantine bureaucracy of the Anmhonmite kings, and the fancy, sexy parties of the colonial governors, now accomodated discourses about republicanism and democracy. In 1968, on the centennial anniversary of Norfolkite independence, Robert Mensah published a vivid account of the structure's history; for example, he noted that the Anmhonmite kings had a monopoly on the gem trade, since the mine it was built over had some of the finest one could find, that would put even the Koh-i-Noor to shame; this monopoly was transferred to the Garbanian monarch, who appointed the colonial governor to render tribute in the form of gems and other crystals. Miners chosen to work the 'Royal' (later 'Imperial') Mine were greatly honored by Anmhonmite and colonial society, and quite a few became famous enough to rise through the ranks, socially, sometimes through illicit means.

The Mad Monarch (Weyerlbert I of Garbania)

Postby Free Norfolk City » Thu Aug 29, 2024 11:11 am

Image

Weyerlbert (right) married Lady Gwynnadette Steglamont (left), but what was considered a storybook marriage soon became the stuff of tabloids, even centuries after both had died.

Weyerlbert, the first of his name, is considered by many to be the worst monarch in the history of Garbania, to the point that it is considered a cultural taboo to give his name to one's son; whereas he was just considered a cruel tyrant in his time, it is now known that he had recurrent and eventually permanent mental illness; the exact nature of the mental illness is not known definitively, but historians and medical experts have suggested numerous options, such as bipolar disorder or porphyria. It is believed that he suffered from severe obsessive-compulsive disorder, as numerous figures such as Galena de Qubey, a popular salonnière during his reign, testified about their difficulty in dealing with the Emperor; one of his wife's friends noted how he was fixated on trivial details and was alternately indecisive and obstinate, and also revealed that his unpredictable mood swings made his own children fear him—he micromanaged every aspect of his wife's life, which led to salacious rumormongering about their love life; while some monarchs accumulated mistresses, Weyerlbert opted for the practice of scolding and belittling women, and was known to personally veto (or rather, attempt to), the marriages of his siblings and relatives.

However, it should be noted that he did not start off this way; in fact, when he first became emperor, he was loved by a significant amount of the population; some even suggested that he would preside over a golden age of Garbanian culture, and ironically, the Norfolkites celebrated his coronation with such fervor that it became the "Big Shame" sometime after independence. The first signs that something was wrong tended to be ignored, of course, such as when Weyerlbert began to unceremoniously dismiss many of his father's trusted advisors and courtiers; many of whom were seen as some of the finest avaliable, such as the Ducs de Uintani et Auzou et Eizo.

The AC/DC (All City Defense/Democratic Committee)

Postby Free Norfolk City » Tue Sep 03, 2024 11:26 pm

A painting depicting a meeting of the All City Defense Committee.

The All City Defense Committee, later the All City Democratic Committee, was the governing body of Free Norfolk City from 1792 to 1868. It was founded by a group of esteemed, concerned citizens who were critical of Garbania's increasing neglect of the then-colony's affairs, and is considered by historians to be a precursor to the Norfolkite Congress, which was established in 1868 following the directives issued by Valdémard Lanthier, the country's first president.

At first glance, the historian Desmond Kanwar notes, there was nothing amiss with the AC/DC, as it was chock full of (constitutional) monarchists who favored autonomy for Norfolk, but were otherwise firmly loyal to the Garbanian monarchy, though there were hardliners who wanted to, as they put it, "royalize the monarchy and nationalize Norfolk," also favoring autonomy, but insisting on maintaining the traditional, feudal system which revolved around the seigneurial system and paternal conservative rhetoric.

However, there were also the indigènes, who favored a restoration of the Anmhonmite monarchy, and were themselves torn between those who wanted the dismantling of the free imperial city of Norfolk and a return to the kingdom of Anmhonm, and compromisers who advocated maintaining the status quo, but advocated a union of indigène and habitants (that is, non-indigenous peoples).

There were no republicans, nor any members calling for independence. Either would have been so unfathomable to those in the AC/DC's ranks that it is considered ASB by alternate history fans to even consider it as a POD.

The Imperial Court initially did not respond to the AC/DC's declaration of its existence, simply affirming that the colonial governors were the sole custodians of power as representatives of their authority. Each colonial governor appointed overseers in each province of Anmhonm, and later, each borough of Norfolk, and each overseer was tasked with various duties, such as investigating ships foreign and domestic, and the welfare of orphans and other social destitutes. When the AC/DC was founded, it sent letters to the governor at the time, the Comte de Naphamittar, Jean-Chrysostome Joukyuu, who was from an important Anmhonmite family, and considered one of the Évolué. The Comte warmly recieved the AC/DC's representatives, but explained that, bound by his duty, he could not do much other than to accept their advice, as he had any other subject.

It was not until 1797 that the Imperial Court offered to work with the AC/DC, but only on the condition it accept being led by the colonial governor as part of a merger into the traditional political structure, which the AC/DC happily acceded to, in the hopes of effecting change that would be meaningful. As such, they were briefly known as the Governor's Council, and consisted of representatives elected by the people; however, as Garbania was an absolute monarchy, the role of the Council, considered the first legislature in Norfolkite history, was mostly advisory, though it could debate and pass bills.

The AC/DC consisted of members from all walks of life, with notable members including the Duc de Yoknapatawpha; he was a proud indigène, but caused a stir in their ranks when he proposed rejecting the Garbanian monarchy and reviving the Anmhonmite monarchy in favor of establishing a brand new, Norfolkite monarchy. When asked whom he would put forward as a candidate, he pushed for the well esteemed Comte de Midorpidor, Hastulphus Chaffar, and he posited he could marry Lady Suara Sukulutu, from a cadet branch of the Anmhonmite royal family. However, the plan did not come to fruition, as Hastulphus was not too keen on being told who he could marry, not to mention that Suara, who was a closeted lesbian, hadn't the slightest interest. Laurence Wardley, her close friend and confidant, noted her deep and intimate bond with a governess named Helena Heurtebisse; that relationship would spark a scandal in the future.

Verchere, Gyori, Blouin, Bridwell, Calandra, MacSporran, Ketek, Spalding and McKissock are some of the famous families represented in the AC/DC, although membership was solely based on merit and valor. At the festivities celebrating the then-latest anniversary of the Battle of Gaugamela, a member of the AC/DC, Ser

"I would rather have multiple choices for my free will rather than one provided by the government itself."

His descendant would famously condemn the industrial agriculture that was replacing the longstanding structure of small family farms and rural communities.

"In every case of rebellion, there are abuses, I cannot deny that, there are abuses."

Norfolk already had a high rate of urbanization and literacy for an agrarian society, with both merchants and knights forming a politically aware urban middle class. This cosmopolitan middle class is only going to become wealthier and more politically aware as trade with the outside world picks up, and they're going to start wondering why they're stuck being ruled by some stuffy old families who just happened to win a war a few centuries ago.

From 1555 to 1868, there were numerous indigenous titles in the Garbanian peerage such as the Comte de Texkentuck, Comte de Valmiz, and the Duc de Naphamittarvillyaley-et-Pratapgadh. These titles were created to ensure the cooperation of the indigenous nobility, as well as to further hasten the assimilation of the Anmhonmites into Garbanian society.

"Democracy is the question, Monarchy is the answer!"

List of the Kings of Anmhonm (1455 - 1917)

Postby Free Norfolk City » Thu Sep 12, 2024 12:33 am

OOC: This should not be taken as the complete list of Anmhonmite kings, but rather of those who were involved in the formation of what would become Free Norfolk City.

Image

Bhalthabhar I was not the first King of Anmhonm, as that honor belonged to Xhobhhohhobhor, who belonged to the Xhaxaq family, but he was of the Sukulutu family, which would prove influential for centuries. Bhalthabhar oversaw a very centralized government; a minutely detailed pyramidical hierarchy with seventeen grades, and with him and his family at the top. It was due to this system that the issue of hereditary high-ranks for public posts arose, which led to the monopoly of occupation of the most important posts by a limited number of families, in effect a nobility, amongst which were the Zhalaq, Qhado, Qhasoq, Zhaaqon and Qhaqaq families. Bhalthabar took the throne after a bitter civil war saw Anmhonm break into fractured petty kingdoms—he wrote one of the best known works of Anmhonmite literature, the Analects; being reportedly distraught at the possibility that his empire would collapse and his work undone, as was likely from examples from history, he asked for his closest associates to come unto him, and to listen to his advice and counsel, that they would be able to maintain the country after his death. These messages were imbued with themes of national unity, abhorrence of corruption, greed and political squabbling, as well as advice on the policies to be pursued to keep the foreigners at bay. He endorsed meritocracy over nepotism and castes, he warned against politicians engaging in lucrative commercial enterprises. He advised military readiness at all times, as well as provisions to take care of the economic needs of military men, as well as the family of the martyred soldiers. He asked that a learned priest should be appointed in all courts to interpret the legal provisions and principles. He regarded bribery as the biggest enemy to a just legal system and endorsed harshest punishment for both giver and taker. He also emphasized the role of women, insisting on equality of men and women. Until 1868, the Anmhonmites considered his teachings to be their constitution.

Image

Zantabas was the second Sukulutu king of Anmhonm, the firstborn son of Bhalthabar. He maintained his father's strict regimen, and encouraged his subjects to seek out knowledge and understanding of the world around them; it was his own fixation with this habit that saw him convert to Manichaeism when the Garbanians first arrived; a Garbanian fleet captained by Benthorchimac Meliocque arrived on the shores of the kingdom, and made contact with subjects of the king. He sailed back to Garbania, carrying a party of Anmhonmite emissaries, and then sent them back with emissaries from Garbania, alongside Manichaean priests, soldiers, merchants and others; the ships anchored at Jhalawalanomboru, and after a brief halt to initiate the governor of Abulumanikungo, uncle to the king, the procession went on to the capital where they were greeted by the king and five of his leading nobles. The king asked the Garbanians to help deal with raiding barbarians from the terra incognita to the north; the Garbanian firearms were decisive in the victory and many captives were taken.

Image

Zhalhoquas was the third Sukulutu king of Anmhonm, the firstborn son of Zantabas. He was born in Akilagpaghana, and the Kingdom of Anmhonm reached the height of its military and economic power during his kingship, as initiated by his father. He was an ardent womanizer in his youth, and he had many children before he even ascended the throne, much to his father's chagrin. Xhoquabhal Zhaaqaq, one of his chief ministers, reported that it was an annual occurance for his bastards to come of age and arrive at the palace gates to be recognized by him; he pleased his wife by, while not properly legitimizing them, not just getting rid of them, either; his wife, whose name was Xhazadha, did not want competition for her son, the heir Taquobor, but she was paralyzed by her own deeply entrenched sense of morality to advocate anything but their "soft exile" to the fringes of the kingdom, usually to serve as overseers of the border with the savage lands. His reign was marked with a blossoming of trade networks, a cultural renaissance, and the mass adoption of gunpowder weapons for both the army and navy. Despite his political expertise, his moral failings were criticized by numerous sages, as he was a serial adulterer, oftentimes picking up lovers and one night stands during his regular tours of the country. He had many more illegitimate children, and seemingly was unconvinced of the idea of ceasing his philandering even after his wife left him to join her son at his "court-within-a-court" in the city of Ghegoshtë. When Zhalhoquas passed away, his son expelled every single one of his illegitimate children, and some fled right into the almost coincidentally awaiting hands of the Garbanians.

Image

Taquobor was the fourth Sukulutu king of Anmhonm, controversial for being more interested in luxury and court ceremony than government, politics, and foreign relations. The decline of the Sukulutu dynasty is usually traced to his reign, as well as the origins of the feud between Garbania and Anmhonm; he cut all ties with the Garbanians whom he saw as meddlesome and a threat to the kingdom and expelled all Garbanians from the kingdom. However, this was at great cost to his person, as his brother Moquontor had been smitten with a Garbanian milkmaid, Estelyn Georquardt, and had intended to marry her. When he ordered him to relinquish Estelyn, Moquontor fled the country with her. Taquobor also attempted to strengthen the traditional ways, but at the expense of the Manichaean community; once he expelled the missionaries, he knew that many people were pious believers who hated him for his prejudice towards them; Taquobor knew this, and he also knew that if he threw out all of them at once that he would lose a lot of support and make many enemies. What he had to do was slowly take out the people who believed in Manichaeism and replace them with his people, he tried to do it slow enough to keep support, and fast enough so he could get rid of them. He had his chance, he felt, when his agents intercepted letters from the Manichaean community intended for the Garbanians, but when trying to apprehend their authors, the Garbanians decided to get involved; although Garbania and Anmhonm had an alliance and corresponded regularly, their relationship was not always stable and peaceful. They corresponded regularly through letters that contain vital information about relations and internal affairs of Anmhonm; these stated that Taquobor thought the Garbanians were arrogant and callously indifferent, while the Garbanians complained that Anmhonmites were too myopic and self-absorbed. It didn't help that the Garbanians gave asylum to Moquontor, and refused to hand him over.

Taquobor's wife, Nazara Xhoqu, often meddled in the affairs of state, and acquired her own favorites, known as the queen's men, who, unlike her traditionalist husband, were modernizers. Lalacha Tetteh, Nazara's closest confidant, reported that the two regularly argued with one another over political differences, and this would ultimately prove to be crippling to Taquobor, especially as his son Zolthantar was coming of age; both argued over his education, and tried to steer him in their preferred direction, which led to him feeling a paralyzing sense of insecurity and inadequacy, since if he favored one parent, the other would be petty and vindictive towards him. It has been reported that Lalacha and Nazara were lovers, or at least a bit too close than what would've been permitted, which might have explained Nazara's incredible hostility to her husband's exile of Lalacha; when he refused to repeal the sentence of banishment, she disrobed, tossing it all to the ground, and bade him farewell. Xholholhos Qhoxan, the king's favorite, saw it as a chance to strike, and engineered the swift purge of the queen's men from court; Taquobor had a close and controversial relationship with Qhoxan, and although the precise nature of the relationship is still uncertain, it disgusted enough people that the nobility came together to pressure the king to banish Qhoxan, but he did not stay away for long. A group of nobles, led by Sobhoquas Qhada, the Lord of Nausherwanbabri, assembled a small, but formidable, force and marched on the capital, attempting to push a series of regulations on Taquobor in order to restrict his power; these regulations were called the Sublime Ordinances, as they had been blessed by the priests, and the twenty three signatories of the Ordinances are referred to as the Lords Ordainers, or simply the Ordainers. Setbacks in the economy, combined with percieved corruption and degeneracy, motivated the Ordainers, but their proposals were only accepted reluctantly and under coercion, and a long struggle for their repeal ensued that only ended with the execution of Qhada—the execution sparked widespread outrage, but for a time effectively crippled anti-government activity. However, little known to Taquobor, his son and heir, Zolthantar, had fled the country with his mother, Lalacha, and some select retainers; they would only return when Nazara, having linked up with a powerful benefactor in the Garbanian explorer and knight, Krahnainluin Jenstecou, whose wife, Lisnadette, took a special interest in Nazara, and returned to the country; the Garbanian emperor, Eduaudldur, told Jenstecou to use this opportunity to strengthen Garbanian interests, and to "swallow his pride" (one historian made the bold claim centuries later that Jenstecou had discovered his wife's lesbian affair with Nazara) for the sake of the country. Tarquobor suddenly found himself at war with Garbania, or so it appeared; the Imperial Court seemingly pleaded ignorance of Jenstecou's activities, but did not respond when Tarquobor demanded aid in countering the attack; as it turned out, Tarquobor's forces either mutinied, fled or were soundly defeated at the Battle of Oyunbozan; attempting to flee himself, he was apprehended by the peasant Babharas Qhara, who noticed "a strange fellow" upon his land; Qhara refused knighthood, instead beseeching the incoming government to help his children, whom he had been raising as a single father since the death of their mother, and so they recieved a new life in the capital, which came out in "silent acknowledgement" of the new provisional government, headed by Nazara. It is ironic that Zolthantar, in whose name all this went down, was dissatisfied with the brutality of the executions of his father's favorites; his father, however, was locked away for life in prison, only to be found conveniently dead shortly thereafter.

Image

Zolthanthar was the fifth King of Anmhonm; crowned at the temple in Anzikuteketio, his first order of business was to purge his own mother from government, and later have her imprisoned for the rest of her life; he reputedly told her he only refused to have her put to death "for the fact that she had loved me, and done right by me in my youth." He hastily promoted his own favorites, purging all who had supported his mother. However, he was unable to get rid of Jenstecou, as the Garbanians insisted he was an ambassador, and that expelling him would be a very bad sign. Zolthanthar suspected the Garbanians were up to something, but was unable to prove it conclusively enough to rally his supporters for a, no doubt, risky assault. He established his court at Sarihusada, and attempted to modernize the country. His squeamishness at the thought of capital punishment led him to avoid observing executions, even of supposed traitors, a task he delegated to his adjutants, such as Zaquabhor Qaaqos, whom he appointed his ambassador to Garbania, and Toqualthas Xosaq, whom he tasked with rebuilding the country, assembling the finest architects, artists and craftsmen; one of them was Alesleigh Lualhati, who was both artist and muse; Zolthanthar tasked her with painting the portraits of his wife and daughters, and her works, a blend of Garbanian and Anmhonmite styles, sit prominently in a Norfolkite museum today. Moquar Qhaaxa, an Anmhonmite sailor who had fought with distinction in the prior war, was tasked by Zolthanthar to set course on an expedition to explore the world and "acquire goods and knowledge alike," but before he could do so, he was suddenly told to wait, on account of the arrival of a Garbanian fleet captained by Rahdbard Amedsarc, who carried a request from the Imperial Court that a greater "unity of spirit" should be established. When Zolthanthar reluctantly rejected the proposal, Amedsarc reported that he could not leave until he had fulfilled his orders; the impasse was controversially negated after some time when Amedsarc secured the signing of the first of the five unfavorable treaties, which would set Anmhonm on a course leading to its own dissolution. Almost as if on cue, he died in unclear circumstances, with one report mentioning a fire in the palace, and another a freak accident.

Image

Jaquanar was the sixth King of Anmhonm, and was notorious for having succumbed to some of humanity’s basest and most carnal needs, whilst the series of regents who oversaw Anmhomn during his youth proved incompetent, and the kingdom was paralyzed. He was devoted to orgiastic forms of religion and literary dilettantism, but was routinely scolded by the sages for his "profane love" of the sacred prostitutes that served the fertility goddess, Aṯtaramōšá. There is much of a debate as to whether sacred prostitution did truly exist in these ancient times, but all historians agree that Jaquanar's fondness for women was paramount; there are some incidents we are unable to publish here, but suffice it to say, they scandalized the general public and courtiers alike. He is presented by the historian Moquar Tolan as the archetypal bad king, entirely focused on luxury and court ceremony and completely neglecting of politics, foreign affairs, and military pursuits, which he left entirely to opportunistic favorites. It should be noted that the Sukulutu king not covered in this list, King Maquoros, had instituted a firm appreciation for sensuality and hedonism in the Royal Court, but that his advice on seeking moderation in such matters was often flagrantly ignored. Toquabos Taalas, a general of the Royal Army who sported the epithet, "The Gynophile," for his own affairs remarked that Jaquanar was a victim of the Garbanian trick to flood the Royal Court with imported prostitutes, one of the first explicit accounts of the controversial "flirty fishing" method employed by successive Garbanian governments. Of course, while Taalas himself did not deny partaking in their company, he seemingly had enough sense to try to alert his liege, who ignored him by having him sent to fight the barbarians. The line of succession to the throne, once unbroken, became a major issue when Jaquanar not only refused to marry, but had, over the years smitten with drink and narcotic alike, died in his sleep after an orgy. Scores of illegitimate children were all over the place, and the depraved king hadn't even bothered writing so much as a note on a napkin; in order to preserve the national polity, the courtiers decided to entrust the throne to his younger brother Tadhabhas, with Xhalabha Saxaq as his right hand.

Image

Tadhabhas, known to the Norfolkites as King Tad, or Taddeus, was the seventh King of Anmhonm, ascending to the throne after his brother, Jaquanar, died without legitimate issue; he tried to restore "order and propriety" at court, compelling the girls and women who had served his brother to marry upstanding boys and men, and to "be mindful of their duty, not only as subjects, but as human beings." He attempted to modernize the country further than his predecessors had, and his first order of business was to procure a wife from Old Norfolk, Ælfthryth; although he did not believe in Christianity, he tolerated his wife's faith, though he refused to repeal the ban on preaching; Ælfthryth's chapel still stands today, and is still hosting services as well. Perhaps ignorant of the meaning of the verse, he ordered his courtiers to engrave Genesis 3:15 upon her sarcophagus, seemingly thinking that

He had to deal with numerous rebellions from the illegitimate children of his brother, and sometimes the descendants of those of Taquobor and Zhalhoquas, and each one seemed to be bigger and worser, but he managed to crush each one, oftentimes with his wife at his side, egging him on and encouraging his soldiers to fight on, to press on. A fair and lovely maiden, Ælfthryth wore her faith on her sleeve, and taught it to their children, much to her husband's chagrin, since he did not want any further adversity. He did, however, fund the translation of the Bible into Anmhonmite, which invited numerous learned sages such as Bhaquaquos Toqu to write commentaries on it, oftentimes adopting a rather Marcionite understanding of scripture. Manaquor Taaqaq, who had been sent into Old Norfolk to procure a wife for his liege, reported that the Christians were "a strange lot, given to absurd fancies, but yet firmly loyal to the king, and thus we find no reason to relieve them of their properties or lives," and thus, the original Norfolkites were left to their own devices. However, as saintly as his mother was, his father's heir, Jaquadhas, sparked concern when he was once found studying the Bible on his own accord; he swore that he abided by the old ways, but had merely wanted to learn more about his mother's faith. The Manichaeans had already been a thorn in the sages' side as it was, but the potential for another sect that was completely against the old ways emerging to capture people's hearts and minds concerned them deeply. The Manichaeans, who were no stranger to Christianity and had dealt with them rather negatively in the past, were also concerned. Jaquadhas told both that he had no desire to go against either, and he wrote to his mother how he was deeply disturbed by what he saw as people's lowkey desire to renounce her.

Image

Toquobhol was the eighth King of Anmhonm, the firstborn son of Jaquadhas; he alleviated the worries of the sages when he swore "more firmly than usually expected" that he would abide by the old ways, though he refused to infringe upon the privileges of the Norfolkite Christians or the Manichaeans, because he felt doing so would be an affront to Heaven, and coined his own version of Gamaliel's principle in the progress. However, the increasing reliance on foreign ideas, and the matching increase in foreigners to begin with, slowly but surely began to inflame tensions, as numerous lords were uneasy with what they saw as threats to the Anmhonmite way of life. It certainly didn't help that the Garbanians were increasing their "investments" in the country, and that Manichaean missionaries were increasingly active as well. Toquobhol meant well, but he lacked the charisma and aptitude expected of a king, and was unable to effectively contend with the emerging factions at court, one of them being the pro-Garbanian lobby led by Jaquolthal Rhonas.

Image

Xhoquabhos was the ninth King of Anmhonm. He attempted to corral the various factions, but ultimately failed in his endeavor. However, he did revamp public works, built impressive monuments, and left behind numerous steles depicting him as a generous and benevolent ruler of his people; his marriage to Xhalarra Xhaalaxaqas was considered practically storybook, and upon her tragic death (struck by lightning), he built her an ornate mausoleum, which the Garbanians and later, the Norfolkites, preserved; he refused to remarry, and thus he had only one child, Princess Lollara. Cymut Mutrobos, a local aristocrat, and a Garbanian who had "gone native" in Lazaldald Magiois, helped her secure the throne against rival claimants.

Image

Queen Lollara was not the first queen regnant of Anmhonm, but she was one of the best known of them. She spent lavishly on the military, hoping to make it a formidable force in the region; she also attempted to corral the nobility, and quashed conspiracies by various bastard branches of the royal family. Although considered a strong and virtuous leader, Lollara reputedly had a problem with alcohol, and based on modern analysis of ancient texts, she could be described as a high-functioning addict. She was notably bisexual, in that she pursued relations with Xolanda Yvielaine, Tallalla Qhaaqan, Jazanta Rhados, Zhallara Tadas, Herwennefer Sigyaad and Lorakata de Sokolor, but ultimately married Saquaquar Qhaama to maintain the dynasty. Said to be as black as a pot of ink as many of her people had been, the Mareylanders, notoriously racist during their feuds with the seemingly egalitarian Garbanians, depicted her in racist cartoons as a wanton degenerate, as some of her female lovers were white, or passed as white. She ruled during a period of rapid growth, as well as Garbanian encroachment; she is remembered for her intelligence, her political and diplomatic wisdom, and her military tactics, as she was able to "make known that we shall not bow" over the course of several skirmishes, most notably at the fortress of Sokolor. She tasked the lifelong, skilled soldier Tabonas Taaqu to back up her heir, the Princess Chroyane, but Taaqu, reviled as Anmhonm's equivalent to Benedict Arnold, decided that he would do no such thing: as soon as he heard of her death, he overthrew the government in a military coup, and attempted to force Chroyane to marry him, but rather than do so, and to deny him any opportunity to use her, she flung herself out of a window of the Crystal Castle, plummetting to her death.

Image

Tabonas Taaqu, called the Devil by his Anmhonmite subjects, and the Fool by the Garbanians who sought to exploit him, was the first King of Anmhonm that wasn't from the Sukulutu family. The reasons for his coup against the legitimate regime are still speculated to this day, ranging anywhere from simple opportunism to grandiose megalomania, but whatever the case, he is reviled by Anmhonmites not only as a traitor, but for paving the way for Garbanian colonial rule of Anmhonm; the Norfolkites tend to be more mixed on the matter, noting that he ultimately, even if unintentionally, paved the way for their country's genesis, while noting his cruelty and barbarity, such as his attempt to expel the proto-Norfolkites over their refusal to acknowledge his rule or to give him a wife. The proto-Norfolkites managed to defeat him five times before he begrudgingly accepted them; he also attempted to snuff out the Sukulutus, but many of them went into hiding before he could capture them. Taaqu oppressed the commoners, and introduced the vile custom of jus primae noctis to the country; his expansion of it to noble couplings drove many nobles into conspiracies and plots against him and his life.

The Garbanians were not too happy with the toppling of the Sukulutus, and quite a few aristocrats advocated a punitive expedition to restore them to the throne, but Emperor Amauantoran reminded them of the opportunity to expand the burgeoning empire that was developing colonies elsewhere; as such, the Emperor invited Taaqu to Garbania, tasking Edgus Taylwald to keep a close eye on him while procuring him whatever he wished. Taylwald swallowed his pride, and did as he was ordered, even notifying the prostitutes who complained about being rough handled by Taaqu that, "Your suffering is for your country, and your country will thank you for your service," but it was when Taaqu attempted to pursue Nanalette Masocques, whose father was a high ranking official, that all hell broke loose. Taaqu was suddenly confronted by Ser Isteyncois Masocques, who demanded satisfaction. When Taaqu refused to acknowledge him, citing he was a guest of the Emperor himself, Isteyncois slew him with a single slash of his sword. Although there was some uproar (notably because Isteyncois had killed Taaqu during a gala, thus commiting a technical foul in shedding blood in the honored halls of a host), the Emperor's right hand man, Syloretus Tusntene, let him know that he wouldn't be charged. The Anmhonmites were jubilant that the mad man was gone, but little did they know that the Garbanians had only just begun.

Bhalthalthor, born into the Sukulutu clan, was the ninth king of Anmhonm; however, despite the initial celebration that erupted when he took the throne, many came to see him as a Garbanian puppet for his liberal granting of land deeds for the building of factories, as well as academies that focused on foreign learning. The Garbanians were even able to station soldiers in Anmhonm, insisting that Taaqu had made it necessary, and ethnic Garbanian settlers began to establish agrarian collectives with one another. His reign is otherwise unremarkable, and he tends to be rather forgotten by future historians; the most damning remark came from the court jester who reputedly mused upon his death: "Wait - we had a king?"

Xhantontor was the tenth king of Anmhonm. He was widely regarded as a virtuous man and a model Manichaean, being the first Anmhonmite king to convert to Manichaeism; the Manichaeans held him up as a paragon of Manichaean deportment. However, he ran afoul of the Garbanians, who, in a bit of ironic foreshadowing, had neglected affairs in Anmhonm in trying to establish colonies elsewhere; the

Rainah Etchells-Greene, a fixture in the politics of the Jubilees, U.S.E.

The Etchells are a notable family of Norfolkite descent from Garbania, who rose to prominence as the discoverers of the Jubilee Islands in Esvanovia, but who made their initial mark in the Imperial Garbanian Navy, with many members enlisting and rising through the ranks. They were from Free Norfolk City, but were staunch loyalists, one of many notable families to reject the fledging Norfolkite republic in 1868—they were ennobled by the Garbanian emperor Ylbenethach, whose platinum jubilee was the namesake of the islands; the Etchells claimed the title "Lord of the Jubilees," and ruled over the islands as a personal fiefdom until 1892, when the islands were "suddenly and deliberately attacked" by the fledging Norfolkite Navy, as the islands were to be annexed to the newly minted United States of Esvanovia—known as the Kildare Incident, it was named in reference to Norfolkite Navy captain Hiram Kildare, who was tasked with bringing the islands under Norfolkite control; he did so with the signing of a treaty at Etchells House, once the home of the Etchells family.

The first Lord of the Jubilees was Ser Gulian Etchells; he was given the islands as a fiefdom, and claiming that "he could not confine himself to the tame life that civilisation affords," he made his way over to the islands; his enduring notoriety is due to his large, multi-ethnic harem of women, as well as the Jubilee livre, a currently that he minted himself that could only be redeemed at the company store; this was because Gulian was an agent of the Monmouth Bay Trading Company, and promised the company sole, exclusive rights to control any and all trade.

The aforementioned women came from Rhossenia, the Amihans, and elsewhere in the Garbanian sphere of influence, and although everything was consensual and by the book, Gulian reputedly had no problem with encouraging petty spats and full blown rivalries among these women, sometimes with deadly results; he considered it a convenient way to enforce the status quo and weed out troublemakers; ironically, the biggest trouble came from his heir, Ser Ajax Etchells, an ancestor of the famous Norfolkite actress, Keeley Keeling; while Gulian enjoyed the company of myriad women, Ajax settled upon a perky, bubbly young Rhossenian woman named Yuliia Turevych, marking the start of an "unofficial tradition" for Lords of the Jubilees to marry Rhossenian women; known as "Yuyu," Yuliia was a modest, loving lady who bore Ajax five children; she also influenced his decision to abolish his father's harem, but also to provide lodging and employment to those women, who married into the Etchells family or married into the Rhossenian families moving to the islands, and so on.

Under Ajax's rule as Lord of the Jubilees, the Imperial Court had, by indenture, granted the islands in perpetuity to him; as such, the Jubilees became the smallest colonial possession in the realm, but despite this, as well as the distance from the rest of the Esvanovian colonies, this did not stop Rhossenian emigration to the point that, aside from the Etchells themselves, and a few "crack experts," the rest of the inhabitants were Rhossenian. His heir, Patrek, picked among them Yana Volynska to be his wife; she, like Yuliia, was considered a well respectable lady, and like Yuliia before her, Yana played a significant role in administration. He also tried to make the capital a respectable, cultured community; it was called Etchellstown, due to the clan's propensity for self-promotion, but it was renamed to New Tavorsk (Novyy Tavorsʹk), which is named after the Rhossenian capital, Tavorsk, after the transition to Norfolkite rule. Ajax created a militia, the Milice des îles Jubilés (MdIJ), and Patrek purchased a spare steam-powered warship, which he called the Odysee, to be the flagship of his fledging navy, the Garde Côtière des îles Jubilés (GCdIJ), as well as a few more later on.

Patrek's successor, Finneas, was named in honor of a surrogate uncle, Finneas Beardsall, who was hired from Free Norfolk City to help "keep pace with the rest of the world," and who was the last of Ajax's experts upon Finneas' coronation as Lord of the Jubilees. Finneas, however, was a bit scandalized by the fact his wife, Olha Kravchuk, had to sport a maternity-themed wedding dress, as she was five months pregnant upon her marriage to Finneas—their son, Corbian, was thus given the epithet of le Bâtard Aimé; as such, he was barred from the line of succession; however, he did become notable in his own right when he served in the Vajas War, fighting as a cavalry officer in the Légion Esvanovienne (Esvanovian Legion). His mother advocated often for him, but the lordship passed to his sister, Nancee, who was the first Lady of the Jubilees; Nancee offered him a post in the militia, training new recruits.

As Lady of the Jubilees, Nancee vigorously advocated the best interests of the islands in sessions of the National Assembly's House of Peers; in contrast to many of her peers, whom the members of the House of Representatives tended to find difficult to work with, Nancee was seen as approachable and conciliatory; in particular, she dealt with a notable representative from Free Norfolk City, a fellow loyalist named J. Nicholas Stabile; she supported his attempts to "shake up" the realm, to "jumpstart reform," and advocated pluricontinentalism, which would have replaced the colonial empire with a singular nation-state spread across continents (hence the name). However, the so called "Stabile Plan" failed to gain enough traction, as traditionalists, who advocated the status quo, maintained control over Garbanian politics; ironically, Nancee broke from tradition herself when she married a non-Rhossenian in C. Xavier Habborlain, who was from Free Norfolk City and also advocated pluricontinentalism; their firstborn daughter, Eulalie, succeeded her; she was described by contemporaries as as comely, kind and modest. However, she was a slim young woman, with frail body, and prone to diseases. She therefore never married, and she was succeeded by her cousin, Margaery, who won the hearts and minds of her subjects with her refreshing beauty and political aptitude, particularly as it pertained to the crisis affecting Free Norfolk City; as Lady of the Jubilees, Margaery joined the Imperial Rule Assistance Association, which was created in an attempt to preserve Free Norfolk City's colonial status; now while it has previously been taken as historical common knowledge that Free Norfolk City was expelled from the Garbanian colonial empire, recently published documents revealed that negotiations had begun sometime prior between the two sides, both seeking a quick and peaceful outcome when it came to the eventual exit of Free Norfolk City from the empire; the two sides coordinated to arrange matters such that when the Imperial Court announced Free Norfolk City's expulsion and the Norfolkites were "forced" to establish an independent government, it would be presented as a "fait accompli" that could not be jeopardised by popular uproar or opposition, which was still in favour of unity.

When the Norfolkite Declaration of Independence was issued, Norfolkite historian Rajeev Kapoor noted that the Jubilee Islands, like the rest of the Garbanian colonial empire, protested the expulsion, demanding that "our brothers and sisters in Norfolk" be returned to the imperial fold. Margaery herself reputedly told Prime Minister Adgémir Patenaude, who told her to settle down during an emergency session of the National Assembly, to "shut the fuck up," which caused a loud and boisterous roar of approval as Patenaude vainly tried to reestablish order. She was feted as a heroine by the droves of Norfolkite veterans protesting outside the parliament building, and to them, she said she had no regrets, that she would stand by them. However, the Imperial Court was not too happy with her actions, and when she recieved word that they intended to strip her of her title, she abdicated in favor of her daughter, Mariamne, who was a crypto-critic of the government, at least until the sudden coup that replaced it with a more friendly one.

As Lady of the Jubilees, Mariamne's first order of business was to have her mother rehabilitated; she was given the title of "Lady Dowager," and who had her rights and privileges restored. Mariamne also worked to affirm her fiefdom's commitment to imperial rule, and despite her family's dislike of the political situation, they officially recognized Free Norfolk City as an independent state; little did they know of the ramifications of such a seemingly innocent act of respect. Mariamne was succeeded by her firstborn son, Dorian, whose claim to fame was that he attempted to hire mercenaries to fill the ranks of a "new and improved" coast guard; he did this because he had heard rumors of plans to scrap the traditional autonomy of the colonies, which irked him greatly. However, by doing so, he raised the suspicions of the Imperial Court, which sent one of its agents, Héméré Émond, to ascertain Dorian's intentions; Dorian refused to cease and desist, but the Imperial Court left him with a warning before Émond left for Garbania.

Dorian's mercenaries were paid handsomely, but began to grow tired of life on the islands, and some started to renege on their agreements; at one point, a skirmish broke out between some of them, and loyalists, particularly over the company of a few local women, and it was called the Day of Malignity; the incident was an embarassment for the Etchells clan, which had long insisted the Jubilees were idyllic and peaceful. As a result of the Day of Malignity, Dorian was, while not stripped of his title, effectively sidelined by Anaclétus Surprenant, an Imperial Garbanian Army officer, which modern historians have called a form of self-coup. Surprenant's report on the Day of Malignity noted that the violence started when one mercenary tried to flirt with Bella Bywaters, a local prostitute, who had already been paid by another from the opposing faction; Bella, spending the company with Surprenant (who wanted to see what all the fuss was about), told him that she "was just doing her job," and that she had taken no side in the matter.

Surprenant's brief rule over the Jubilees was about five months, and ironically resulted not only in further violence when Dorian attempted to expel Surprenant, but scandal amongst the nobility, who had long considered their titles to be sacrosanct, their privileges inviolable; the dispute is said by some to have inspired the Garbanian decision to leave Esvanovia, as much of the discord came from the Esvanovian nobility. Surprenant himself merely affirmed that he was simply following orders, particularly after Dorian was arrested, attainted, found guilty of high treason, and executed; however, his family maintained control over the islands, as Surprenant oversaw the declaration of Ser Victor Emmanuel (called le Fidèle, or the Loyal) as Lord of the Jubilees; Victor Emmanuel had first made his mark by serving in the Imperial Garbanian Army in Vajas, and was quite fond of Katasean culture, so much so that he even sported the country's iconic chonmage hairstyle, and married a Katasean woman from a notable family. Upon his return to the Jubilees, he introduced martial arts, swordsmanship and other ideas from Katase to the islands' militia.

His tenure as Lord of the Jubilees was also marked by the declaration of intent from the Imperial Court to sanction the idea that the various Esvanovian colonies should integrate with one another. The only problem was that this was to be done without Garbanian involvement, as the First Summer of '92 took place when, in 1892, the Imperial Court effectively offered the "whole of Esvanovia" to the Norfolkites, due to pressing concerns elsewhere in the world and fears of overextending the military and its supply lines; this, of course, horrified everyone in the Esvanovian colonies, most notably the Etchells clan. Victor Emmanuel, for his part, protested, citing his long loyalty to "Crown and Country," but his pleas fell on deaf ears just like everyone else's had; sporting his chonmage, and accompanied by his elite adjutants, he left for Garbania, leaving his wife, Shino Furuta, to be the regent for their son, Louis-Jouji, who was his heir. Shino was seen as saintly by her contemporaries, and was often seen praying at the family altar, or teaching calligraphy to her son. His father labored greatly to try to effect some sort of change, but this effort proved fruitless, especially as the Norfolkites decided to accept the Garbanian offer, despite their own reservations; as such, Victor Emmanuel returned home in shame, and awaited orders from a government that did not recognize his title nor his birthright; however, at first, the Norfolkites seemed willing to accomodate, or at least to discuss the matter.

The Norfolkite representative, Duncan Isom, arrived at Etchellstown to speak with him; indeed, Isom seemed quite happy to explain that the Norfolkites were more than willing to maintain the traditional power structure with only slight, cosmetic changes such as the legal tender and the establishment of Deism as the state religion. These changes were accepted, and Isom reported to Redwall that the islanders were cooperative; however, the initial understanding soon gave way to concern when the Norfolkites passed the Titles of Nobility Amendment to the Constitution, which stripped citizenship from any citizen who accepted a title of nobility from an emperor, king, prince or foreign power, which caused great alarm amongst those who benefited from the traditional power structures. Isom, returning back to the islands, confirmed to Victor Emmanuel that it was the will of the people; this was when the Norfolkite distaste for the Etchells' feudal style of rule increased; however, the threat of compulsory acquisition was not made until Gwilym Etchells, the "last" Lord of the Jubilees, assumed power; he rejected a Norfolkite offer to buy the islands, and all rights pertaining to them, and consequently, the Norfolkite Navy was deployed to the islands; it helped that as a sign of how discontended the islanders were after so many years of virtual serfdom that they sent Redwall a petition asking the government to "do whatever is necessary to remove the Etchells permanently from the Jubilees."

As such, in 1892, the United States of Esvanovia, Free Norfolk City's first (and currently only) colony was officially founded; despite the encouragement of Shino, by now a proud supercentenarian, and other notables such as the "Five Beloveds," who were Enoïl Dulude, Isaure Huot, Mercédor Lavigne, Vilaire Valcourt and Théossitule Carbonneau, the Etchells clan refused to participate, and declared their intention to remain independent; this alarmed the Norfolkites, who requested they accede to joining the others and, upon refusal, they were notified that their eviction was nigh.

Hiram Kildare, who was a staunch republican, immediately made haste for the Jubilees, and upon his arrival, he seized the ships of the Coast Guard, and recieved the surrender of the militia, which had long atrophied as a fighting force and was definitely not capable of fending off the soldiers accompanying Kildare; seeing his defense simply fade away before him, Gwilym Etchells tried to solicit Garbanian aid, but the Garbanians refused, citing that they no longer had any responsibility for the islands.

Gwilym Etchells, however, refused to bend the knee; well, at least until Kildare and his men arrived at his residence and, in front of the former's wife and children, told him that he had no other option. Even Naoe the cat, who nuzzled Kildare's leg and was picked up by him to be stroked, seemed to agree that the age of feudalism was over. As such, Gwilym reluctantly surrendered, and the Rhossenians were jubilant to say the least. Emannar Roxton, a bureaucrat from Free Norfolk City, was tasked with filing a detailed report on the islands; his report pointed out the crippling dissatisfaction with feudal rule, the middling economy, and the recommendation to mass buy out the contracts of the remaining mercenaries. Shino, in her final days, compelled Roxton to push for a pardon for Gwilym, as "punishing him would be rather petty, like one stepping on ants," and the pardon, in fact, was given, much to Gwilym's shock and awe; of course, he nevertheless refused to stop calling for a return of the Jubilees to him and his family.

The last Lord of the Jubilees, Gwilym Etchells, attempted to invoke feudal customs when he feverishly sent letters begging for Garbanian aid, but as the Garbanians had long since washed their hands of Esvanovia, no aid would be forthcoming. The local population, comprised primarily of imported plantation workers from Rhossenia, did not resist the "invasion," and even warmly welcomed Captain Kildare upon his arrival, according to his first mate, von Varlwyll.

The Etchells did not initially set out to procure themselves a fiefdom; it just so happened that a beachcomber, Stefan Etchells, stumbled upon the then-uninhabited islands back in 1776; thereupon, he reported his discovery to the Garbanian authorities, whom entrusted Stefan as custodian of the islands in 1778. Stefan enlisted the aid of fellow "proto-Norfolkite" figures like Brannyn Brewlan, Tyrek Mudd, Drannyl Sunderland and the indigenous Comte de Sakkhaliban, Zhabhadhas Xhodoq. They imported tons of Rhossenian (a Slavic-inspired people) serfs from the Garbanian colony of Rhossenia to settle the islands; so many arrived that outside of the select few proto-Norfolkites, every other person was Rhossenian.

As Emperor, Ylbenethach was considered a wise and venerable gentleman, and was honored numerous times over throughout the empire; but he was particularly venerated on the Jubilees, where a statue of him, pointed in the direction of Garbania, overlooks the seas in the capital. One of his many sons, Prince Luceon, visited the islands in 1783, and upon doing so, remarked that the islands possessed an almost Edenic beauty. Another, Prince Tristifer, visited the islands, also, having been appointed to shadow Admiral Alberet Granes, another proto-Norfolkite, to acquire an understanding of naval warfare from him; however, the Jubilees enjoyed a largely peaceful existence with scarcely any issues with foreigners.

Emannar Roxton, a colonial official from Free Norfolk City, back when it was a free imperial city (ville libre d'Empire), was tasked with carrying out a massive urban renewal programme of new boulevards, parks and public works in the capital, Etchellstown—the Etchells wanted to prove that they could keep up with everyone else; he was invited by then-Lord Dannys Etchells, who espoused rather elitist views; despite largely aligning with the then-prevailing political orthodoxy, his philosophical proclamations were considered scandalous and intentionally provocative in his time; he wrote on a wide range of subjects, drawing criticism and outrage from many quarters.

In 1892, the Norfolkites "attacked" the Jubilees when the Norfolkite Navy captain, Hiram Kildare, arrived to announce the Norfolkite annexation of the islands. The "Lord" of the Jubilees, Gwilym Etchells, sent a letter of protest to the Imperial Court in Garbania, beseeching them for aid, but the Imperial Court ignored the message, and consequently the Etchells clan was expelled from the Jubilees. Today, the islands are a popular tourist destination, and patrol boats do the rounds. The Etchells clan has long since accepted the transition, and one of their own is the custodian of Etchells House, which is a museum dedicated to the "Garbanian Empire's last, longest-lasting fiefdom."

The Jubilee Islanders are the inhabitants of the Jubilee Islands.

They are a Slavic-based people, and speak their own dialect of Rhossenian, as well as Norfolkite.

They are considered a jovial, friendly people; industrious, hard working, prone to voting for politicians who emphasize the agrarian over the industrial. They were initially wary of the Norfolkites, but quickly adapted to a republican government. The MBTC has largely left them to their own devices, and aside from tourists and researchers from the Cape, they tend to stick to one another.

Jubilee Islanders are known to be very community minded, and even when going overseas, will always keep in touch with their loved ones and neighbours. It is not uncommon for young people to go to mainland NIE for schooling, then taking up jobs on the islands, though some choose to stay on the mainland, or even go to FNC proper.

The capital of the Jubilees was originally Etchellstown, due to the clan's propensity for self-promotion, but it was renamed to New Tavorsk (Novyy Tavorsʹk), which is named after the Rhossenian capital, Tavorsk. I may adjust this later, though.

The majority of the people on the islands are Rhossenian, though there are pockets of non-Rhossenians, namely Ngombian guest workers and the Norfolkite overseer representing the MBTC.

The Black Parade

J.T. Nakatsui, the Norfolkite doctor who reported on the first cases of Viral Overactive Dysfunction of the Auto-Immune System (or VODAIS) in the country.

Viral Overactive Dysfunction of the Auto-Immune System (or VODAIS) is a sexually transmitted disease which has reached epidemic levels in many nations, and Free Norfolk City is no exception. It was discovered, at least among the Norfolkites, by one John Thomas Nakatsui, a doctor in the borough of Shaiburg. He had noticed strange symptoms in certain patients, and made detailed notes about each, which he eventually compiled into a single report, which he sent to the government authorities; he sent numerous more when he noticed that more and more patients were developing the same exact symptoms. He called it Communicable Immune Deficiency (CID), and urged the government to take heed of his warnings. Julian Szklarz, a Norfolkite journalist who wrote The Black Parade, a tell-all book about these cases, noted that Nakatsui was appointed head of the Strange Disease Countermeasures Committee, or SDCC, which was tasked with handling the emerging crisis.

The emergence of VODAIS was considered one of many problems facing the country during the eighties, already a contentious time due to socioeconomic issues in Free Norfolk City proper and Norfolk-in-Esvanovia. There were discussion groups that appeared throughout both, all offering the general public a chance to ask questions and get involved; one such group was the indigenous led-and-focused Indigenous People's Health Crisis (IPHC), chaired by the renowned indigenous Anmhonmite doctor, Geruud Spittaanvenam, who was in touch with Garbanian doctors who called the disease dysfonctionnement viral hyperactif du système auto-immunitaire in their own reports; despite being traditionally at odds with one another, Norfolkites and Garbanians worked together to combat the epidemic, and soon enough, Ngombia, Rhossenia, and Vajas all joined in. It was Spittaanvenam, Nakatsui and others who encouraged the creation of the President’s Emergency Program for VODAIS Relief (PEPVAR), as well as efforts to combat misinformation and discrimination.

His personal philosophy closely resembled Schweitzer's personal philosophy of Reverence for Life (Ehrfurcht vor dem Leben) and, as such, he tirelessly advocated for VODAIS patients and their loved ones, even helping to start the country's first VODAIS hospice. He was also tapped to help formulate a national health strategy, established to promote updated national policies for health promotion and disease prevention, which included full VODAIS antiretroviral medication coverage with no cost, regardless of age or income.

Governors of the Rin Leased Territory (1900 to 2000)

Postby Free Norfolk City » Thu Sep 26, 2024 8:21 pm

Image

1. Ser Josiah Troke (1895 - 1900): As acting administrator of the Rin Leased Territory prior to the signing of the Double Zero Lease, Troke was essentially the first, and only, Garbanian governor. Born into a loyalist Norfolkite family, Troke was tasked with securing territorial concessions from Katase during, and after, the Vajas War. However, Troke was unable to do so, although he did manage to secure a foothold in Rin, where Norfolkite merchants were active; when Garbania signed a treaty of friendship with the Kataseans, abandoning their efforts to secure new lands, Troke tipped off the merchants, and told his connections in Free Norfolk City to consider assuming control of Rin. As such, Norfolkite historians consider him an honorary governor. Troke would marry a local lady, Kiku Tanaka, and leave for Garbania after the lease was signed, having played the role of a middleman in negotiations.

Image

2. Francis Clément Merton (1900 - 1917): F.C. Merton was the first Norfolkite governor of the Rin Leased Territory. One of Troke's trusted associates, he was a staunch advocate of Norfolkite independence, being one of the Epigoni (a Greek word meaning offspring), the first generation of successors to the unwitting founders of the fledging republic. He was sent to Rin at the behest of the government to administer the territory, and did so chivalrously, spending lavishly on public works and education. He brought in the finest architects, teachers and other exports from abroad, and tasked them with making Rin the jewel of the region. He also had to contend with the Garbanians in Vajas, who were prone to refusing to allow ships from Rin into their ports, still seething from the lack of territorial gains. However, Merton was able to secure better relations with them after he met with the Viceroy of Vajas, Ser Adhémar-Maël Gousille, who had orders from a new government following the Les Trois Glorieuses, the "three glorious days" that saw the bloodless overthrow of Emperor Weyerlbert in favor of his son, Crown Prince Gondthorchimac. He also arranged trade deals with the governments of Abetton, Katase and AHSCA, as well as the Monmouth Bay Trading Company in Esvanovia.

Image

3. Nicholas John Vilane (1917 - 1923): The second Norfolkite governor of the Rin Leased Territory, he was known as la Epicure, due to his profilic pleasure-seeking tendencies, namely his chronic womanizing. He also fraternized significantly with Garbanian aristocrats, so much so that he was considered one of the "dying flames of reunionism," by the Norfolkite historian, E.A. Spargo. During his tenure, the authority of the old, effete aristocracy began to dwindle as those brought up in Merton's academies began to assert themselves, as well as reformists from Free Norfolk City proper. He's also attributed with jumpstarting the fashion industry in Rin, beginning with sharp new uniforms for the Milice du territoire loué par Rin, generally called la Milice; the miliciens were a considerable force in the territory; initially simply tasked with helping the Norfolkite government protect the territory, they began to assert themselves in later years as tensions arose over agitators from mainland Katase seeking to hasten the end of the lease.

Image

4. William Cuthbert Fullagar (1923 - 1932): The third Norfolkite governor of the Rin Leased Territory, Fullagar was best known for his brief role in the onset of the Great War (1931 to 1951) in Esvanovia, when "Fullagar's Faithful," a crack band of soldiers from the territory, were sent to Ogtogo to protect it from a rumored Aureumterran invasion. Other than this, he was considered a firm, but fair, governor, and maintained modest economic growth and the syncretic blending of cultures; he also expanded the militia, providing them with new weapons such as tanks and aircraft which were first shown to the public in a military parade near the end of his tenure.

Image

5. Rexford Lashbrook (1932 - 1973): The fourth Norfolkite governor of the Rin Leased Territory, Rexford Lashbrook was the longest serving governor of the Rin Leased Territory. He was considered something of an eccentric, which might have explained the Norfolkite government's decision to send him to Rin rather than keeping him around; in contrast, he did not seem particularly bothered, and dedicated himself to improving the territory, especially as discussion over the territory's future began to mount. A staunch libertarian, he supported initiatives to ensure LGBT rights, most notably through the Schatz Commission, which advocated unconditional reforms aimed at ensuring full equality for the LGBT community. He also pushed for greater public involvement in the political system; to the media, he stated that, "The time will come when all of this will end; when we leave, these people will need to be conscious of not only their rights, but their responsibilities to themselves and one another," and that he urged the people of Rin to "carry these new lessons with you into Katase, and show them that all people are entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

Image

6. L. Ryder Mussett (1973 - 1988): The fifth Norfolkite governor of the Rin Leased Territory, L. Ryder Mussett was best known for his handling of the VODAIS epidemic, sending doctors and other experts to Abetton, Katase and AHSCA to assist them in combating the spread of the virus that caused VODAIS; he initiated a territory-wide campaign of dispensing information to men, women and children alike; he also strove to prep the territory to begin weaning itself off of Norfolkite control, beginning with the phasing out of the traditional base of Norfolkite bureaucrats in favor of local equivalents—he stated that, by 2000, the Rin Leased Territory would be "locally owned and operated." He also began instructing officers in the militia and police, most notably those belonging to the territory's equivalent of SWAT, a police tactical unit called Les Hiboux ("The Owls"), to begin preparing for the impending handover. "We want to ensure a smooth, speedy and peaceful transition," he explained to local media. "We do not want to have the future of this fine city strangled in its crib by red tape; most of all, we want the people of Rin to remember that we Norfolkites will always be their comrades-in-arms..."

Image

7. C. Montgomery Temby (1988 - 1992): The sixth Norfolkite governor of the Rin Leased Territory, Temby was best known for being the shortest serving governor, having resigned from office in protest of the federal government's "gross negligence" during the second Summer of '92. He was an avid dancer, and his relationship with the Norfolkite socialite, Priscilla Rackley, made him famous long before he really got started in politics.

Image

8. Lachlan Lambourne (1992 - 1999): The seventh, and last, Norfolkite governor of the Rin Leased Territory, Lachlan Lambourne oversaw the final years of the territory's existence; he personally visited factory workers, teachers, nurses, and others, thanking each of them, regardless of their tenure, for their service to Rin; he also met with the representatives of the spontaneous flash mobs that formed to ring in the handover on January 1st, 2000; he wished them, and the whole people of Rin, well in their future endeavours, and he also ensured that whosoever wanted to immigrate to Free Norfolk City, or Norfolk-in-Esvanovia, would be more than welcome in either. He met with Katasean representatives also, urging them to "work in the best interests of all the people, not just the select elite," and oversaw the handover ceremony in 2000; afterwards, he took up a position in Ogtogo as a advocate for internal reform, and reapproachment with the Aureumterrans.

OOC: Please telegram me if any character interests you for lore purposes, thank you.

Image

Alec Louis McChesney.

1. Alec Louis McChesney: A.L. McChesney is a well known Norfolkite baseball player, considered to be one of the handsomest men in the country according to multiple tabloids and blogs. Widely regarded as the greatest contact hitter of all time at the catcher position in his prime, he was also fan favorite during his career, largely due to him being fond of spending his off days helping his 'hometown' little league team, and devoting time to various charitable causes; during Lorraine Kindrakewich's presidential campaign, perhaps owing to the fact Cunegonde was on the aforementioned little league team, he endorsed her, citing that she struck him as very approachable, committed, and advocated common sense policies. These days, one can find him running his family business, McChesney's Pub and Grill.

Image

Willa Whalsey.

2. Willa Whalsey: Born into a notable sailing family, Willa Whalsey is a popular Norfolkite actress, with numerous roles in both movies and television; she has also done voice acting for the dubs of popular animes from Abetton and Katase. Her first role was as a "committed young militiawoman" in a made for TV movie about Norfolkite independence in 1868, and her ancestors include one of the sailors who was on Captain Kildare's flagship during the mission to the Jubilee Islands in Esvanovia.

Image

Titania Duff.

3. Titania Duff: Slender and curvaceous, Titania is a lovely young lady who is never seen without a smile on her face. She is quite social, perhaps too social. She is a beautiful, buxom woman who captures the eyes of most males (and queer women) who look upon her, and very kind towards people, perhaps too kind. Miss Duff works in the foreign service of the Crystal Castle Republic, and holds the position of Ambassador to TBD.

Image

Mikaela Esparza.

4. Mikaela Esparza: Mikaela Esparza was a Norfolkite journalist, best known as a pioneer in bringing up controversial issues such as abortion, incest, rape, VODAIS, the imprisonment of juveniles, and the trading of weapons. Her book about VODAIS in particular, centered on the life of supermodel Justine Mirna Damary, who was one of the first famous women to ever succumb to the disease, won numerous accolades, and was even made into a movie.

Image

K.K. McKenough.

5. K.K. McKenough: He is the head of the Federal Security Police (FSP, or "SecPol" as it is more commonly known), the Norfolkite equivalent of the FBI. He is a quiet, reserved type about whom little is known; what is known is that he has shown himself capable and willing to pursue his own agenda. However, he tends to serve the interests of the Republic, and is well-known for his eccentric behavior and brazen charisma; even as a child, he was regarded as a gifted, and despite his eccentric personality, often charismatic individual even at a young age. Showing an aptitude far beyond his age, he was generally seen as eccentric or "weird" by his fellow students. He lives a rather secluded life outside of the public eye, and remains "happily" unmarried, despite his own rhetoric praising the benefits of marriage. He also refuses to hire a cook for himself, and refuses to eat in public.

Image

Claudia "CeeCee" Clement.

6. Claudia "CeeCee" Clement: "Everyone copies one another and then kvetches that they’re the original," quipped Claudia Clement, the first Norfolkite salonnière to adapt to the new medium called television; she was a Norfolkite critic, talk show host, and interviewer known for her filmed interviews; following in the footsteps of Barbara (Barbie) Saffern, who did likewise with radio, she entertained hundreds of guests from all walks of life, from the wealthiest bankers to randoms pulled off the street. In preparation for an interview, she said that she did the necessary research independently, and her interviewing style was praised by many. The interviews mainly focused on the celebrity's latest work, such as an actor's most recent film. She was also a notable sex symbol, and was the muse of the prominent artist, Ebenezer Essel.

Image

Myron Vyacheslavovich Kurochkin.

7. Myron Vyacheslavovich Kurochkin: Born into a Rhossenian family of little renown, M.V. Kurochkin was a novelist, short story writer, poet, playwright, literary critic, travel writer, essayist, and painter who lived in Esvanovia; born at the tail end of Garbanian colonial rule on the island of Ogtogo, he lived out his life during the current, Norfolkite rule; his works were seen by some as brazen, thrilling, and hip, while others denounced them for their radical portrayals of romance, sexuality and use of explicit language; while the latter side seemingly won the debate, as upon his death, he had been dismissed as tasteless, avant-garde, and a pornographer who had only garnered success for erotica, his work has been re-evaluated over the years since, although some today criticize him for what they feel is fetishism, far right politics (he sympathized with the Totecan radicals and had a lukewarm attitude to democracy, which he intimated would tend towards the leveling down of society and the subordination of the individual to the sensibilities of the "animalistic" of society) and "soft" misogyny.

Image

Élise Clemens.

8. Élise Clemens: Élise Clemens was the young Norfolkite woman best known as the brief and unfortunate mistress of the Emperor Dalaeraud, whose son and heir, Weyerlbert, expelled Free Norfolk City from the realm. She was a humble tavern wench, and he was the Crown Prince who wanted to slip away from his entourage and see what the colony was "really" like. Despite the concerns of her family and friends, as well as corresponding concern from his, the two pursued a relationship. Even after his marriage to a "proper" woman, he continued to pursue his side piece. It is believed by some, usually fanfic writers, that he wanted to divorce his wife, abdicate the throne, and retire to Norfolk to live with his true love, but none of this can be confirmed, although popular speculation was driven by a 'cinematic' documentary which posited that the Emperor made a crass remark about his wife (which we can't publish here) and that Clemens was his "real" love. Everything came to a head when he brought her to Garbania, and made her a lady in waiting to his unsuspecting wife. However, as these things often do, word got out; when her lover died, she was five months with child, and so fled the country after she was told the new emperor threatened to have her arrested. She hastily returned to Norfolk, where she gave birth to a son, Tuthhston, who adopted his mother's surname since "FitzEmperor" was deemed too dangerous unlike in past cases. One historian made the controversial claim that Weyerlbert's feelings of resentment for the Norfolkites (and, hence, the "real" reason for the expulsion) stemmed from his father's adultery, but most historians believe that it was hardly that influential an event. Élise Clemens lived a quiet, obscure life thereafter, as it was her son Tuthhston Clemens who would make an impact in the world.

Image

Missy Missler.

9. Missy Missler: Some call her, out of "affection," Missy Melons, while others call her that derogatorily, but either way, Missy Missler is a Norfolkite model, actress and television personality. She started her career as a magazine centerfold for a certain kind of magazine geared to men, and modeled for fashion companies, as well as doing commercials for local and foreign companies. Missy became nationally famous, however, for publically turning down the courtship attempts of an older, prominent, wealthy tycoon. Marrying into money was not a good thing for me, she said in an interview years later.

Image

Marie-Thérèse Pravatoudom.

10. Marie-Thérèse Pravatoudom: Marie-Thérèse Pravatoudom was in charge of the Rin Housing Authority (RHA), the municipal corporation in the Rin Leased Territory (1900-2000) that oversaw public housing within the territory, and which was the largest rental landlord. The RHA's goal was to provide affordable housing for low-income families and combat blight, and Pravatoudom oversaw the largest expansion of the authority's mission in years (during the sixties, primarily during the Summer of ’69) with the establishment of numerous new housing projects, which were named after prominent Norfolkite figures, but also several local ones, as well. She was considered saintly by many in Rin, as she advocated for and provided extensive social services to poor, largely immigrant families from Esvanovia and Varathron. She also provided housing to prostitutes attempting to exit the sex trade, and argued that women, as opposed to men, were trained in the delicate matters of human welfare and needed to build upon their traditional roles of housekeeping to be civic housekeepers. After the handover in 2000, she relocated to Free Norfolk City, where she advocated for the Rinfolk; that is, those citizens of the Rin Leased Territory who preferred Norfolkite, instead of Katasean, rule.

Image

Josée-Georgette Tsiaussidis.

11. Josée-Georgette Tsiaussidis: Free Norfolk City's ambassador to the Kingdom of Abetton. Modest and sweet, she is sincerely motivated to making the world a better place, but she tends to be a tad too idealistic at times. Her mother, Marlena, is a socialite best known for her fondness for cigars, while her father Maero, is an MBTC agent suspected of advocating reform.

Image

Nymphadora Budaeva.

12. Nymphadora Budaeva: Nymphadora Budaeva is a Norfolkite businesswoman, political donor, philanthropist, politician, and diplomat currently serving as the Ambassador of Free Norfolk City to the Stórveldi of Aureumterra. She was initially active in local politics and civic causes, such as helping the poor, and raising funds for the arts. She has been a generous donor to and supporter of primarily progressive figures at home, and of charities in Aureumterra. She grew up in a middle-class family, the daughter of a local veterinarian and a home economics teacher. Her parents are Alyksandr Budaev and Dasha Budaeva.

Image

Tedmund Cullimore.

13. Tedmund Cullimore: Tedmund Cullimore is the Norfolkite ambassador to Garbania. Before he became ambassador, he was a special education teacher, and he taught students including those with autism, agenesis of the corpus callosum and traumatic brain injury. "These children deserve to be heard, loved and appreciated," he told the media. "The world needs to understand that in many ways, the children have it right. We need to learn from them." He is a father of three daughters ages 17, 15 and 13.

Image

V.D. Mitra.

14. V.D. Mitra: Victoire-Désirée Mitra is the Norfolkite ambassador to the Divine Empire of Shimono. She is a shrewd, calculating type, and enjoys good food, sun-drenched beaches and long walks in the pleasure district. Her father is Kama Mustafa Mitra, a member of the prestigious Mitra family and her mother is the popular art model, Geneviève-Françoise Falardeau.

Image

Hanoch McGillicutty.

15. Hanoch McGillicutty: Hanoch McGillicutty is the Norfolkite ambassador to TBD. He formerly worked as a firefighter before shifting careers. His wife is Meladee, and he has two sons in Róan and Darren.

Image

Dženifera Felizità Chua-Küchler.

16. Dženifera Felizità Chua-Küchler: Dženifera is...

Image

Keyara Harrington.

17. Keyara Harrington: Called "Keke-chan," by her followers, Keyara is one of the biggest Norfolkite streamers around today. She is part of a collective of online content creators called the Oddkast on the video live-streaming service, LIfeCast, which can be considered the love child of Twitch and YouTube.

Image

Shazza Springsteen.

18. Shazza Springsteen: Shazza is a Norfolkite singer and actress who achieved recognition in an episode of a reality television series which recorded her attempts to gain a record deal and her eventual signing with a label. Although she has become synonymous with singing songs about female empowerment that are "full of attitude," her catalogue also consists of love songs; Shazza believes female singers are often misunderstood for expressing "feminist views" or standing up for themselves, about which she often sings, explaining, "that doesn't mean that we don't love the men in our lives, and that we don't need the men in our lives." Despite being seen as 'dated' after the eighties' optimism gave way to nineties' cynicism, Shazza retained considerable popularity due to the use of her music on television and video games. Her husband is popular talk show host, Monferriz de Villacorta.

Image

Marcelo Kouoru.

19. Marcelo Kouoru: Kouoru was, and still is, considered by many to be the founding father of modern Ngombia; leading the Movement for the Social Evolution of the Ngombian People (Mouvement Pour L'évolution Sociale Du Peuple Ngombien), aligned with the True Whig Party in Garbania, he spearheaded the campaign, during the controversial 1955 electoral season, to maintain Ngombia's union with Garbania. In fact, the campaign was so successful that Ngombia transitioned from colony to simply being an extension of so called metropolitan Garbania. Although many Ngombian accounts consider him to be a folk hero, or even a saint, the accuracy of such a characterization has been questioned in recent years.

Image

Rylee Roseborough.

20. Rylee Roseborough: Rylee, a popular progressive voice in Norfolkite politics, was, at twelve years old, was best known for making the first suggestion for what would become the VODAIS Memorial Quilt—she was also the youngest person that Mikaela Esparza interviewed for her book on VODAIS. Rylee would later become notable for her dedication to her community, being considered the "first young person to actually enjoy community service."

Image

Lola del Rio.

21. Lola del Rio: A prominent women's baseball player well known for having a toothpick in the corner of her mouth while on the field and at the plate. Her love interest is the popular Norfolkite actor, Guasparre de Calvio.

Image

E.E. Blumenthal.

22. E.E. Blumenthal: Erwin Eugen Blumenthal was a Norfolkite nuclear physicist who is widely credited as the father of the Norfolkite nuclear programme; he also played an important role in the birth of the space programme. He was one of the chief proponents of what would become the no first use doctrine which asserts that nuclear weapons are solely for deterrence and that Free Norfolk City will pursue a policy of retaliation only. He called nuclear weapons a necessary evil, but spoke candidly and worriedly about the stockpile of "biochems" (biological and chemical weapons).

Image

Bromwell Entwistle.

23. Bromwell Entwistle: Bromwell Entwistle was the founder of the Tin Foil Hat Society, founded at a time when there was a society for every interest, including poetry, philosophy and politics. Commonly referred to as the Tin Hats, or Foilers, the society dedicated itself to exposing what it felt were deficiencies in Norfolkite politics; with political parties banned in the country, the TFHS was considered the first frivolous party (well, an equivalent, anyways) in Norfolkite history. Entwistle himself is best compared to someone like Vermin Supreme.

Image

Dawn Marie Massey.

24. Dawn Marie Massey: Born to Aleece and Desmond Massey, Dawn Marie is part of the "new generation" of the Massey family, who made their claim to fame based on their generations of service in the Norfolkite Navy; one of her ancestors is John Connor Massey, an admiral in the Imperial Garbanian Navy, most noted for his leadership during a naval battle off of Katase during Operation Red Bull, the name given to the invasion of Abetton and its holdings during the Vajas War. However, her parents served in the Free Norfolk City Coast Guard (FNCCG). On her mother's side, she is a descendant (albeit illegitimately) of Prince Theroranin of Garbania, and she is the love interest of the popular folk musician, Fleurent Rouanet.

Image

Justyne Haycraft

25. Justyne Haycraft: Born and raised in Free Norfolk City, Justyne Haycraft is one of the leading Greens of Norfolkite politics. She is seen as one of the emerging New Generation of Norfolkite politics, having come into her own after the impeachment and throwing out of office of Montgomery Jackson-Triggs, the first Norfolkite president to experience that. She has supported Green politics all her life, and whilst still at school she found her first job, working at a local fish-and-chip shop, where she impressed her boss with her questions about sustainable supply. Although political parties are banned in Free Norfolk City, with all politicians running as independents, there have been informal alliances between politicians, and Haycraft has fallen in with one that champions progressive causes. She has yet to run for the presidency, but has recieved word that quite a few would gladly support her.

Image

S.G Mwanangombe.

26. S.G Mwanangombe: Raised in the city of Lloydville in what would become the United Esvanovian States, Stephen Gregory Mwanangombe was born into slavery, but liberated by a Garbanian Navy raid on a convoy of slave ships from Mareyland; the freed slaves were sent to Esvanovia, and Mwanangombe and his family recieved land from the local authorities. He was named for Captain S.G. Stockton, who had captained the ship that he was brought aboard upon liberation. He showed a considerable aptitude for outdoorsmanship and survival on the land, and was brought into the employ of the Comte de Chaumenard, Napoléon-Alexandre Renouvin, whom he considered his father figure (he never knew his real father, who disappeared from the historical record). The Comte took such an interest in him that his firstborn son, Iduan, had him as his godfather. Mwanangombe's wife was the white socialite, Luella Mattix. He considered it his duty to fight for his country in the war against Abetton.

“As the patriotic soldier that I am," he penned to his wife, "I understand that I have only been doing my duty in taking an active part in all the matters that I understand to be grave.”

However, after the Vajas War, and the subsequent decline in Garbania's interest in Esvanovia, he found himself at a crossroads, particularly after Renouvin attempted to "play a most dangerous game" during what was called the Garbanian Interregnum (Interrègne Garbanien). He accompanied the elderly Comte to Charlottechurch, serving as his personal assistant and writing to his wife about the Comte's efforts to maintain Garbanian colonial rule; when these efforts failed, the Comte paid him a lump sum of money, and told him to "enjoin good and forbid evil" before he passed away. Mwanangombe lived long enough to see Iduan throw his lot in with the Norfolkites, and although he was disappointed in the transition from monarchy to republic, he did not leave the land, as so many others had, that had given him succor, and was laid to rest at the Comte's side upon his death.

Image

The Comte de Chaumenard, Napoléon-Alexandre Renouvin.

27. The Comte de Chaumenard, Napoléon-Alexandre Renouvin: The Comte de Chaumenard, Napoléon-Alexandre Renouvin, was the penultimate Comte de Chaumenard in pre-Norfolkite Esvanovia. His domain, Chaumenard, was one of the better off feudal domains, due to its presence along a major trade route of the Monmouth Bay Trading Company.

He was something of an eccentric, and was most known for his efforts to preserve Garbanian colonial rule; and, when that failed, rallying around alternate schemes including the establishment of an independent Esvanovian state with a prince from Garbania as its monarch.

He advocated enlightened absolutism in his domain, and was considered a staunch Epicurean, as well as being fond of women, even after his marriage to the notable salonnière, Ynes Delamar. One historian noted that the two were reputedly the first polyamorous couple in Garbanian history, though others have challenged this view. He did, however, throw his support behind Devana Valsin, who was given the status of being the first female stage actress in the history of Garbanian theatre to kiss another woman, provoking something of a scandal.

During the conflicts with Mareyland and her allies, he personally oversaw raids on slave ships, and invited freed slaves to his domain, offering them generous grants of land. He also did the same with other minorities, cultivating a sophisticated, cosmopolitan atmosphere in the capital, Shirleyville. During the Vajas War, he deployed most of his domain's forces as part of the Esvanovian Legion, affirming his support of the status quo. When the Norfolkites were expelled from the empire, he offered his domain as a home to fleeing loyalists; some of them established the city of New Norfolk. During the Interrègne Garbanien, he was a staunch supporter of colonial rule, and when all else failed, he attempted to support a potential, independent Esvanovian state, but the Imperial Court refused to allow any princes (or even princesses) from assuming its throne, and the idea was scrapped.

By the time the Garbanians left the region, he was an elderly man whose faculties were finally failing, despite his lifelong attempts to stave off the effects of aging. Perhaps, one critic remarked, it was merciful that he died not too long before the Norfolkites assumed direct control of the Esvanovian colonies; his son, Louis-Philippe, was the last Comte before the abolition of feudalism.

Image

Vannevar L. Dryden, Gouverneur de l'île Cornaline (Carnelian Island).

28. Vannevar L. Dryden: Vannevar Latimer Dryden was the Governor of de l'île Cornaline (Carnelian Island) in pre-Norfolkite Esvanovia; in the patchwork of relatively autonomous principalities, company holdings, etc that made up Garbania-in-Esvanovia, Carnelian Island was one of the few that were directly ruled via Imperial administration, rather than allotted to some such feudal lord or the Monmouth Bay Trading Company; located close to Anagonia, Carnelian Island was considered strategic by the Garbanians, and Dryden was considered a formidably capable overseer. Born and raised in Free Norfolk City, one of his first feats in office was to invite Norfolkite settlement of Carnelian Island in an attempt to aid in population control efforts. A staunch advocate for Norfolkite interests, he was also known to push the Imperial Court to seize lands in Abetton and Katase for the settlement of "surplus subjects," but ran afoul of fellow hardliners when he insisted that Norfolkites get first dibs over Garbanians. Dryden deployed most of the island's soldiers to Vajas during the war, and continued to trigger his Garbanian peers by "Norfolkizing" the war effort. However, due to support from certain figures at Court, he was able to maintain his governorship. During the Interrègne Garbanien, he aligned himself with the Comte de Chaumenard, and sent financial support to Norfolkite loyalists in the advent of Norfolkite independence, which earned him derision and mockery in the fledging Norfolkite press. He was considered a folk hero among Norfolkite loyalists, and many in the Norfolkite diaspora still venerate him as such. However, in Free Norfolk City, he is considered little more than a traitor and an agent of tyranny and government overreach.

Image

Seleucus Avison-Young.

29. Seleucus Avison-Young: Born and raised in a Norfolkite loyalist family, Seleucus Avison-Young was an explorer and administrator in Ngombia, overseeing the modernization of that beleaguered country. His family, the Avison-Young clan, was practically a business dynasty, particularly as arms merchants; he introduced modern weapons to both "tribal" and "civilized" Ngombians, and oversaw their training in their use and maintenance. After his time in Ngombia was up, he went to Esvanovia, where he oversaw the expansion of his family's business there; he procured a lucrative contract to supply numerous domains with his family's weapons. His business interests took him far and wide, and he ultimately retired in Vajas, where he owned a ranch. His wife was a fellow Norfolkite, the socialite Josephine "Joey" Cushman-Wakefield.

Image

Juliette Petitpas.

30. Juliette Petitpas: One of Free Norfolk City's foremost actresses, Juliette Petitpas is best known for playing the role of the titular protagonist in YTV's Darla. Born into an ethnic Garbanian family, Juliette has been in show business since she was five, but her parents opted to be her agents because they did not trust anybody in the industry. She did some bit roles for public television before she was discovered by Silas Marner-Volney, one of the better known writers at YTV, later to be known for his work on the Blayze Rushton franchise of action films; his claim to fame was being one of the head writers on NBC's Top Spin, a live action sitcom about Connie Shepard, a new girl who moves from rural Esvanovia to Free Norfolk City and ends up the starting pitcher and captain of her school's baseball team; the show being controversially cancelled fueled Silas' drive to find not only a new project to work on, but a means to show the execs what's what.

Image

Anaïs Deschamps.

31. Anaïs Deschamps: Anaïs Deschamps is a Norfolkite socialite and salonnière of Garbanian descent; she is a direct descendant of Corrhnainluin Motuardt, Duc de Sakkra, via his son, Glovdach. It was at her salon that the famous satirist and comedian, Barthélemy de Clercq, proposed skateboarding be the only legal way to travel around the country. Her salon was also where the members of what would become the Transitional Presidential Council met to discuss plans during the Summer of '92. She was also the matron of Simone Belle Kashouf, a famous socialite, fashion model and beauty pageant champion who was Miss Teen Norfolk and Miss Norfolk, being one of a select few to win both titles.

Image

F.H. Houngbo-Acquarone.

32. F.H. Houngbo-Acquarone: Francis Herbert Houngbo-Acquarone was a Ngombian soldier of the Imperial Garbanian Army, best known for his heroics during the Battle of McAvoy's Drift in the Vajas War, as well as the fact that his marriage to a white woman in Norfolk provoked propagandists in Mareyland to single them out as "proof" of the supposed "degeneracy" among their Garbanian rivals.

Image

Franz Joseph Müller-Ötvös, Comte de Makakakoo.

33. Franz Joseph Müller-Ötvös, Comte de Makakakoo: Born into a Moravian family, the Comte de Makakakoo was one of the many Norfolkite loyalists who recieved lands and titles in Ngombia following the Great Apportionment (Grande Répartition) that followed the conquest of that country during the war with Mareyland; he was a close friend of Prince Lanrothric, and was the love interest of the socialite and salonnière, Delores Sonrohon. His domain, Makakakoo, was where he attempted to build a model society based on the fine arts and the Moravian Church; his mother once told him she wished he would have become a priest. To that end, he named the capital of his domain New Christadelphia, after the city in what is now Norfolk-in-Esvanovia.

Image

Jack Thaddeus Höek, Comte de Calmira.

33. A close friend of Prince Varnanuel, the Comte de Calmira was an important figure in Esvanovian history. One of the ultraroyalistes, who supported the near-absolute monarchy, traditional hierarchy between classes and census suffrage (privileged voting rights), the Comte lived a rather pompous and dissolute life, leading to his death from complications of neurosyphilis.

Image

Eugulmas Berouche, Duc de Turango.

34. Eugulmas Berouche, Duc de Turango: One of the foremost statesmen of his era, Berouche was a military officer and statesman who was one of the leading military and political figures in Garbania during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The people adored him, the Imperial Court referred to him, and the Norfolkites considered him an advocate for their interests.

Image

Reythachber Acququardt, Comte de Gundrumether.

35. Reythachber Acququardt, Comte de Gundrumether: The Comte de Gundrumether was the political reformist who coined the motto, "nationalize the monarchy and royalize Garbania," during the heated debates surrounding the controversial reign of Emperor Weyerlbert, when the Esvanovian colonies were agitating for greater autonomy and reform. He advocated abolishing the Monmouth Bay Trading Company and merging their lands with those of (neighbouring) domains; he did not advocate what would become the United States of Esvanovia, which was a solely Norfolkite scheme; rather, he advocated a series of selective mergers to trim the domains, and helped "ease Esvanovia into the modern world," much to the chagrin of the traditionalists.

Image

Thornold Farriane, Comte de Vigjaro.

36. Thornold Farriane, Comte de Vigjaro: On the cusp of the Garbanian Interregnum, the Comte de Vigjaro sent a report to the Imperial Court, urging immediate action in regards to the rising tensions in the Esvanovian colonies. He dispatched his right hand man, Teruuchi (Terrance) Matsuzawa, who had worked with Norfolkite merchants in Katase, to the Imperial Court to deliver the letter...

Image

Nélédine Beauchesne.

37. Nélédine Beauchesne: One of the finest actresses of her time, Beauchesne starred in films and on television as a sexually emancipated persona and was one of the best known sex symbols of the time. She was one of the first celebrities in Garbania to take part in VODAIS activism, co-founding the Norfolkite Foundation for VODAIS Research, and the Nélédine Beauchesne VODAIS Foundation. Throughout her career, Beauchesne's personal life was the subject of constant media attention; she had crossover appeal, being an ethnic Garbanian (she was born and raised in Esvanovia); unlike many other celebrities, she remained married (and loyal) to her childhood sweetheart, Xélus Kirouac. Her cousin was Marie-Aurélie Racicot...

Tiffany Thiffault.

38. Tiffany Thiffault is...

Image

Diego Edwards.

39. Diego Edwards: Diego Edwards was one of the Norfolkite researchers who helped in the creation of new and powerful weapons for the military, one of which was given the codename of G65434-2. He tends to be rather quiet, reclusive, and when he's not tinkering with some invention at the behest of the TBA Administration, he's (just as) busily obsessing over his oneitis. His grandfather William was just as gifted, and was credited with having helped in the modernization of the Norfolkite Army and Navy Air Forces.

Image

Dianne Rose Sanou.

40. Dianne Rose Sanou: A popular Norfolkite actress of Ngombian heritage, D.R. Sanou is best known for her work in the cult classic coming of age movie, Mixtape, released in 1995. In 2003, federal agents arrested a woman in Esvanovia on suspicion of possessing obscene material that included her; at trial, a pediatrician, using the Tanner scale, testified that Dianne was underage based on her appearance; lawyers for the defense subpoenaed Dianne to show her passport, proving that she was nineteen years old at the time of production, and she later appeared in 2007's Sweet Dealer, which had a scene that parodied her experience in court. Her latest appearance was in 2017's Shuffle, after which she's spent the past several years doing humanitarian work in Ngombia.

Image

Eugène-Émile Udina.

41. Eugène-Émile Udina: E.E. Udina is the Monmouth Bay Trading Company's official representative to the Crystal Castle Republic; his family has lived in Esvanovia for generations, and many members of the family have made their mark on society and culture.

The True Whigs

Postby Free Norfolk City » Tue Oct 08, 2024 12:20 am

Image

Tyonotus Delannon, one of Garbania's best known, and still controversial, statesmen; he was one of the "founding fathers" of what would become the True Whig Party.

Garbania, by all accounts, is a dominant-party system; despite the presence of political parties in Garbania that represent a whole variety of political and economic philosophies, the True Whig Party has been in power for generations; although the party has been described as authoritarian, they have participated in all elections 'by the book,' since the beginning.

The True Whigs are a traditionalist, paternalistic conservative party, whose platform (summarized by the motto "deeds, not words") is rooted in the ideas of filial duty and noblesse oblige, as well as distributist economics, monarchism and maintaining a strong military. The True Whigs had long been seen as pro-imperialist, but in 1955, during the reign of the emperor, Yaoschuwach XVI, Prime Minister Alzamar Rochon oversaw the dissolution of the Garbanian colonial empire in what has been termed by some as the Bitter End (La Fin Amère).

Alzamar Rochon was considered one of the leading reformists of his generation; he controversially pushed for a referendum in the remaining Garbanian colonies: known simply as 5-5-55, all remaining colonies except Ngombia voted for independence.

While Rochon saw this as a necessary measure, refusing to attempt to "stop the unstoppable," it provoked a schism among the True Whigs, ultimately leading to offshoots such as the Garbanian Action Party, or GAP; the GAP, considered by many to be the leading rival of the True Whigs, argues that the Whigs, and other parties, are out of touch with the "real" Garbania, running broadly populist and nationalist platform; the GAP condemns multiculturalism as a threat to the very basis of the Garbanian culture, identity and shared values, and calls for more support for small businesses and rural communities. While the True Whigs are not blameless themselves, the GAP's policies and platform have been characterised as racist and xenophobic by critics.

Although the GAP experienced some success during the past two elections, it was unable to achieve its goal of supplanting the True Whig Party, something that all other parties have had to deal with; historians attribute this to the Garbanian electorate's fondness for not rocking the boat; that is, the True Whigs largely seem competent enough to the average voter.

The DuValle Plan and the Transitional Presidential Council

Postby Free Norfolk City » Tue Oct 08, 2024 2:58 am

Image

N.J. DuValle II was both the Chief of the Norfolkite Police and President of the Crystal Castle Republic, taking over from the Transitional Presidential Council (TPC).

James Charles DuValle, Seigneur de Douce Vallée, better known simply as J.C. DuValle, was the most famous of the Seigneurs de Douce Vallée ("Lord of Sweet Valley") due to his enthusiastic support for unionism; that is, Free Norfolk City's remaining a part of the Garbanian colonial empire. While he failed to achieve his goal, he promised that one of his descendants would come around to help the country when it needed it most. This seemed to be the purpose of Nicholas John DuValle, who rose through the ranks during the mid eighties, just in time for the shitshow of the early nineties. Born to O.J (Osman Jack) and Keziah DuValle, Nicholas John DuValle was raised in Sweet Valley, named for its very fertile soil and quaint small town atmosphere; his parents were modest, hard working folk whose family, the DuValles, made their name as sailors; it is a sort of legend that every generation of the Norfolkite Navy has at least one member of the clan in its ranks, and John Constantine DuValle was one of the more prominent Norfolkites to enlist with the Imperial Garbanian Navy, fighting in numerous battles in the Vajas War, including the daring Bombardment of Port Serenity - it was this DuValle who was the ancestor of Nicholas John, who made his mark on history on land, getting into law enforcement and rising through the ranks to become Sheriff of Riverdale County, wherein he met the future prominent politician, P.D. Thorington.

Image

Philip Desmond Thorington would become one of the core members of the Transitional Presidential Council (TPC); he espoused "paleolibertarian" ideals, and was notoriously seen as an anti-Semite due to his pushing for an unconditional ban on the circumcision of children, oftentimes singling out the Jewish practice of brit milah as a "disgusting rite."

Thorington was an up-and-coming politician who leaned hard into libertarian principles, particularly when he became the head of the Transitional Presidential Council (TPC), which served as Free Norfolk City's first (and so far last) collective head of state from 1992 to 1997.

"People will be free to do as they damn well please," he told the media upon the TPC's establishment. "Nothing will be illegal so long it does not infringe on the rights of others. If a citizen wishes to open a tavern, set up gambling or make pornographic films, the government will not interfere." However, under his direction, the TPC banned the circumcision of children, including the Jewish practice of brit milah and the Islamic practice of khitan: "Bodily harm is against the fundamental rights of all children," he would explain to the media, "and we cannot stand idly by when a so-called civilized country such as Free Norfolk City would allow its male babies to be so readily mutilated legally!"

But, prior to this, Thorington was simply considered one of the "new generation" of Norfolkite politics, as was his vice president, Wolfgang Krüger.

Amorevolous Aesthetics

Postby Free Norfolk City » Mon Oct 21, 2024 1:21 am

Jean-de-Dieu Bourbeau, 5th Duc de Valaine, was best known for his patronage of architects, gardeners and other so called drivers of human ingenuity (moteurs de l’ingéniosité humaine).

What we know as amorevolous aesthetics (esthétique amoureuse) refers to the styles and trends of aesthetics (architecture, art, etc) prevalent in Free Norfolk City during the reign of the Emperor Idhthorchimac and the tenure of Albillnibal Veril as his chief adjutant, and Raelanne Cierrane as his muse; she was the one who coined the term "amorevolous aesthetics," and convinced the Emperor, who was mighty smitten with her, to beautify the country. Free Norfolk City was then undergoing significant changes across the board already to begin with; due to the Great Amalgamation, what was once an entire country was on its way to become the dizzying megalopolis ablaze with neon that we know it to be today. The lavish urban gardens we know and love today were born from the efforts of Raelanne, who considered horticulture to be her passion; her considerable documentation of the local flora is considered one of the best known examples of horticultural literature, and the garden surrounding the People's Library, the national library of Free Norfolk City, was designed according to her specific specifications.

Prince Ambrthorchimac, the Emperor's heir, and his love, Gynangeline Gesle...

Citadel Station, the most famous train station in the Garbanosphere, was designed by M. de Vaux, who was considered a notable forerunner in the field of organic architecture; it was named for the imposing medieval fortress it sits by, looming over the station.

In the seventies, preliminary discussions were held concerning the maintenance of the railroad lines; a notable railfan, Lafayette Lane, famously took aside President Claud Garner and said of a gleaming new high-speed rail locomotive: "A real beauty, isn’t it? Rail technology has always been astonishingly efficient for long distance trips. This model even has heated seats! Imagine fantastic machines like this one hauling passengers between every town and city across Free Norfolk City—we have the opportunity to set the global standard for mass transit! We could expand existing railways and break ground on new ones within boroughs as well: light rails down every major thoroughfare, monorails with dedicated stops inside major tower blocks, even micro rails that could deliver groceries! I could go on and on—oh, Mr. President, just think of all the new trains!”

All this was built to the great delight of the Norfolkite people, but as the popular writer and socialite, Cissie Reddish, noted, it was only just the beginning, and can be considered a Norfolkite equivalent to the age of amorevolous aesthetics. President Garner had become smitten with anthroposophy, and many anthroposophical architects found work in Free Norfolk City, which was considered a "blank canvas" over the decades for many would-be visionaries who could not find work elsewhere; he also attempted to integrate anthroposophical ideals over time with the Norfolkite political system, which met with varying degrees of success, but which is better suited for another post.

Due to the population of the city state growing exponentially every so often, Free Norfolk City has often had to rely on all sorts of tricks and schemes to provide housing for them, ranging from the small, inexpensive houses similar to those built by J.J. Earley and Frank L. Wright (the "Usonian" houses) to something similar to the "subdivided flats" of Hong Kong and the Nakagin Capsule Tower in Tokyo. Concepts such as EPCOT (if fully realized as originally intended) and the Broadacre City have their equivalents in Free Norfolk City, though tempered by ideas similar to those espoused by critics such as Jane Jacobs. This is all a far cry from the more "traditional" styles and initiatives found in the United Esvanovian States, though some cities there have adopted ideas from Free Norfolk City.

In the time of the Rin Leased Territory, a movement similar to Japan's Metabolism began, and attempted to synthesize styles and ideas from both Rin and Free Norfolk City, with varying degrees of success. Ideas similar to that of Rudolf Steiner's idea of social threefolding influenced many aesthetic decisions in the Rin Leased Territory as it had in Free Norfolk City and the United Esvanovian States, but much of the work of socially conscious, and some might say utopian, architects and other aestheticians such as Takenori Kuchiki, Terutada Ayanokouji, Tanemitsu Mushanokouji, Takemoro Oda, Morihisa Yamashita and Shigesane Ikoma were lost; torn down to make way for more "traditional" developments after the handover back to Katase in 2000.

Vajas: The Jewel of the Southern Seas

Postby Free Norfolk City » Sat Oct 26, 2024 11:56 pm

Image

Guimund de Lombelon, Duc de Venezue, famously led an expedition into what is now Vajas at the behest of Emperor Tuthemlin; his handiwork includes the settlement that would become Aix-la-Chapelle-de-Roanne, which would become a favorite vacation spot of the Garbanian monarchs, beginning with Emperor Hamethorchimac.

The United Provinces of Vajas, one of the constituent members of the Garbanosphere, has played a pivotal role in the history of both Garbania and Free Norfolk City. Emperor Inwothorchimac, the first and only monarch of the country to be born overseas, was born in Vajas, in the unofficial capital that was Aix-la-Chapelle-de-Roanne, which is around fifty kilometers to the southeast of the capital of Vajas, Ravensbourg. Barnulmas Maulles, an important knight-explorer in the service of Emperor Ylborananach, is credited with the discovery of Vajas, beginning with one of what are known collectively as the Islands of Refreshment (Îles de Rafraîchissement); as such, he is considered a national hero to the Vajasians.

Rhomary: The Little Fief That Could

Postby Free Norfolk City » Tue Oct 29, 2024 1:34 am

Image

Yvanne de Cahaihnes, a court writer during the reign of Emperor Amauthorchimac, was best known for her work which includes novels, poetry, and biography, and she also penned literary, historical, philosophical, political, and religious reviews and analyses; however, she is considered something of a founding mother among Rhomarians, due to the fact she was the patron of Barnabé Erquemboure, the knight-explorer who sailed into the Badlands, discovering what would become Rhomary.

The fiefdom of Rhomary, arguably the last remnant of Garbanian feudalism, was born out of aristocratic disgruntlement with the centralisation of power under Emperor Lewithorchimac ("Bonnie Prince Lewie" to the Norfolkites), arguably the most famous exemplar of absolute monarchy, with his court central to Garbanian political and cultural life during his reign. His right hand man, Braderlbert Ephignese, was particularly hated, due to his use of underhanded tactics such as hiring goons to commit seemingly random attacks on government critics; he also advocated the stripping of feudal privileges, which angered nobles significantly. However, the nobles found themselves at a marked disadvantage; decades of bickering between rival houses led to a power vacuum that Ephignese was all too happy to have filed, and with the creation of the Dread Wolves, an elite group of knights whose task was to protect the Imperial Family and its core supporters; one of their most famous acts was the Red Wing Incident, in which the Dread Wolves led a daring raid on an inn that was harboring conspirators seeking to overthrow Emperor Salthorchimac and replace him with his daughter, Nanavina; Yvanne de Cahaihnes, staying at the inn at the time, wrote of the raid, reputedly while it went on, and successfully avoided detection by hiding in a closet. The incident was not the first of its kind, but it was considered the genesis of the Dread Wolves' fearsome reputation.

What does this, however, have to do with Rhomary? Because Empress Cairinne proposed that the nobles' grievances could be weaponized to suit the empire's aims; her right hand woman, Rianri Nytte, took great pains to note that Cairinne pushed for disgruntled nobles to be exiled (albeit under the guise of appointments) from the country by having them tasked with leading colonial efforts in Esvanovia, Dienstad, and for the purposes of this post, the Badlands. Cairinne, who was considered to be a moderating voice at Court, was born into one of the noble houses that supported the monarchy; in fact, one of her uncles (by marriage), Lourbert Lusans, had lent his gymnasium to the Dread Wolves' first recruits to use as their training grounds. Yvanne de Cahaihnes notes that Cairinne had particular interest in Geoan Maboane, namesake of one of the oldest cities in Rhomary, whom, while not officially considered to have committed sedition, let alone treason, had been suspected of participating in the conspiracy that led to the Red Wing Incident, led by Hamornritus Yeomoche, who was attainted and then executed; as Yeomoche's lands and titles were given to Alixudldur Monitieri, Maboane was offered by Ephignese, who deeply respected him, the chance to escape: if he took up a position in the emerging plan to explore, and later colonize, the Badlands, he would be spared from prosecution, which would no doubt led to his execution. Despite Maboane's protestations of innocence (which Ephignese himself confirmed in his record of events), he reluctantly accepted the offer, and thus was tasked with helping manage the first expedition to the Badlands, under the command of Admiral Thetchothee Motham.

The Motham Expedition was the first major expedition to the Badlands, and was particularly financed, under duress, by the nobles whose confiscated treasuries were pooled together. Yvanne de Cahaihnes notes that Motham, a commoner who had risen through the ranks, ran everything firmly, but fairly, despite his own contempt for the nobility.

Out with the Old...

Postby Free Norfolk City » Tue Oct 29, 2024 11:41 pm

The fifth son of Emperor Hamethorchimac, Prince Amauelomon was an important figure in Garbanian history, and for many years, he was a staunch supporter of Ser Amaunethach Lothquardt's proposed reforms, usually referred to as the “Twenty-three Articles." He was something of an anomalous favourite, flourishing without a patron, influencing fashion and courted by a large segment of society.

By the dawn of the twentieth century, the ancien régime's days were numbered—though the Imperial Court had successfully mitigated their way through the troubles that beset the country, such as the slew of attacks on government officials in the early 1860s, the Norfolkite Crisis of 1868, the bloodless coup of '73, the attempted rebellion of Evahna Strdrine ("The Angel's Blood Incident") in 1855, and the aftermath of the significant scandal that surrounded the Garbanian Colonization Society's activities in the Badlands, the residual effects lingered long enough that there was still significant agitation among all classes of Garbanian society, signifying that the Imperial Court could no longer go on as it had in the past.

The decline and fall of the old order is traditionally assumed by both Garbanian and Norfolkite historians to have begun during the reign of Emperor Perithachber. It should be noted, however, that Perithachber, rather than having instigated any decline himself, was simply on the throne at the wrong time. Perithachber viewed the nobility as decadent and corrupt, and was determined to transform them into a disciplined, principled, loyal caste resembling a medieval chivalric order, forming the backbone of the new Garbania he wished to create; however, his quixotic efforts to enforce his view of a modern-day knight ran afoul of most everyone, except those few who conformed; most notably Irenara Peneomax, a lady in waiting of his mother. However, tragedy struck when a great and terrible storm hit the ship, and the Opal Incident, as it was widely known, claimed the lives of numerous high-ranking people of Garbanian society; the Emperor, it is believed, died from broken heart syndrome upon hearing of the tragedy—thus, the throne went to Prince Haskthorchimac, who legend says was caught in flagrante delicto with his lover, Delaenne Deseing, by the courtiers tasked with notifying him about his father's sudden death.

As Emperor, Haskthorchimac tasked one of his brothers, Prince Tutnethach, with carrying out their father's planned reforms; he also relied on the expertise of Ulraldald Monyne, whom he sent to the Badlands, "enjoining good and forbidding wrong," with mixed success; his daughters Taladice and Roxyyrrya were left in the care of Lady Evelle Laulanne, considered a proto-feminist by many modern scholars. Haskthorchimac also supported numerous colonial expeditions, such as the ill-fated Buckinglamont Expedition into Jundland; he also backed the brief Garbanian-Norfolkite condominium that would later become the Rin Leased Territory under sole Norfolkite control; these collectively are called the last great wave of Garbanian colonialism.

The Garbanian Colonization Society

Postby Free Norfolk City » Fri Nov 01, 2024 1:34 am

Image

The Garbanian Colonization Society's creation was the culmination of years of feuding between exclusionists and integrationists.

The Garbanian Colonization Society was established on July 4th, 1776 by a cabal of avid philanthropes, led by Ser Merardard Razesley, the Duc de Wabéfuhon.

Image

Ser Merardard Razesley established the Garbanian Colonization Society as part of a "grand compromise" between the two warring factions in Garbanian politics.

His associates included Ser Louithorchimac Laund, who descended illegitimately from Emperor Danthachber, Ser Timchothee Ogesriane, Ser Rondthorchimac Neree, who descended illegitimately from Emperor Alixastyr, Ser Antiper Lelaeles, Ser Gerndert Delamonley and Ser Rowlthorchimac Aetsaud. These men were considered part of the incoming "new generation" of Garbanian leadership, and sought to accumulate clout and authority via their philanthropic efforts. Razesley, himself a member of the Committee for the Relief of the Foreign Poor, which was a charitable organization founded in 1769 to provide sustenance for distressed foreigners, played a crucial role in the proposal to form a colony "for foreigners, and others as deemed necessary," enjoyed the support of Garbanians across factions, who respected his moderate style, friendly demeanor, and political savvy. His peers, such as Lady Talaanne Retolaude, Lady Amal Zosky-Dalland, Ser Hezakya Psalmanazar and Ser Holmrew Srygley, Comte de Tarkamkrest, promoted his efforts extensively.

Image

Lady Talaanne Retolaude was a prominent member of the Committee for the Relief of the Foreign Poor, and a staunch supporter of Razesley's efforts; in honor of her commitment, the city of Retolaude in Garbania-in-Jundland was founded.

Razesley sought out the favor of the Imperial Court, but Emperor Louiitusentien turned him away, noting that the GCS had not established a specific area of settlement. As such, under Razesley's direction, the Garbanian Colonization Society established numerous outposts throughout various regions; however, these, by and large, tended to fail, as the Imperial Court during the reigns of monarchs such as Amaunuelrys, Hannerlbert, Donnethach, Mattnethach and Peraldald oftentimes circumvented the society, using eminent domain to seize territories under the society's administration in Esvanovia, Levanora and elsewhere. Cynus Mornaulese, a GCS agent, noted in his records that "there had always been an excuse," from the Imperial Court. However, it should be noted that not every venture was successful to begin with, with some attempts concluded with the Imperial Court assuming control on merely humanitarian grounds, rather than simply seeking to monopolize its control over prime land.

Jundland was the sole Garbanian Colonization Society venture to avoid the government's meddling, which Mornaulese contended in his private letters to be something of an insult to the society; while most settlers from prior ventures went elsewhere within the realm, some were willing to try again in Jundland, where various sub-societies were already active; the Norfolkites, for example, established Norfolk-in-Jundland, with Ser George S. Dalts, a Norfolkite loyalist, being cited for his considerable aptitude for handling diplomacy with the indigenous peoples. In Norfolk's case, their efforts were based on settling surplus population years after the Great Amalgamation was underway.

Image

Many Norfolkites immigrated to Norfolk-in-Jundland due to concerns of overpopulation; they were hardy pioneers who established vast trade networks, oversaw co-operative plantations built around cash crops like corn and cocoa, and established ties with indigenous tribes.

The Intendancy system (not to be confused with the Arakhkhari model; rather, it is inspired by the intendancy system created by Cardinal Richelieu) was established by the society, with each 'holding' divided into districts, each administered by an intendant; the Intendant-Général, headquartered in the "capital district," was put in charge of the Garbanian Colonization Society as a whole; said district's chief settlement, which is the "capital" of the whole operation, is

Since the Duc de Wabéfuhon did not establish a hereditary position, and his successors largely ignored the society's efforts, the Society elected its own leaders after the Duc de Wabéfuhon's death, with the operation in Jundland coordinated by Ser Jean-Josaphat Valard (spelt Vallard by Norfolkites), who was the first Intendant-Général in 1823; in 1817, he invited his muse, Lady Béatrice Mallad, to accompany him; she became the first salonnière in the employ of the Garbanian Colonization Society, and established her salon in the settlement of Santé Ivana (San Ivanna) de Clématis, better known simply as Clématis.
