Steelbaron's key role in Greythrone power supply lauded

Cape Steelyards, 26 Mar, 2015 - Greythroneans Ambassador in Cape Steelyards on Sunday hailed Steelbaron's active role in the reconstruction and development of Greythrone, particularly in meeting the power shortage in their country.

"By building two hydroelectric power plants with a capacity of 150 MW in Greythrone, The Empire of Steelbaron has helped the country overcome part of its power shortage," Ambassador Paulina de Casper said during a visit to Ministry of Foreign Affair, Steelbaron Sentinels reported. She said Steelbaron was the first country that stood by Greythrone and participated in its development.

Earlier in Jan 2015, Steelbaronian President Dr Albert Steeler officially inaugurated Winteracombe Hydroelectric Power Plant in Greythrone.
Cooperation between Cape Steelyards and Winterarder would further expand with the inauguration of the second phase of Winteracombe power plant, de Casper added.

The construction of the plant, which generates 1 billion KW/h of electricity annually, started in 2013. Steelbaron has invested $280 million in the plant and will fully hand it over to Greythrone after 10 years.

Stevencousin to Supply Naval Vessels to Greythrone

Two Provider-class vessel somewhere at Locus Bay

Stevencousin will soon be supplying naval vessels to Greythrone; Minister of Defense Dr Jan Kappel von Kiger said on Tuesday, the first significant military transfer to Winterarder at a time when it is embroiled in a territorial dispute with undisclose nation. The announcement came after Dr von Kiger held talks with his visiting Greythroneans counterpart, Mr. Scott Wilbert Groeber, during which the two sides agreed to modernise the Greythroneans military as well as raise Stevencousinians involvement in Greythrone's energy sector.

The vessel (GNS Borre) was launched on February 6 from the Excalibur Defense’s shipyard near Winewater Lake. The first vessel (GNS Billingston) was launched in December 16 last year for delivery in May 2015 and is currently being outfitted by the ED Naval Technologies shipyard, a subsidiary of the Excalibur Defense.

On 26 March 2015, the government of the Brasilian Soviet Socialist Republic held a national referendum to select a new flag. Over 90% of the population voted. They had 2 choices: keep the existing flag (same as the flag of Brazil, but the centre was red with 5 gold stars like the flag of China) or adopt the new flag designed by President Fernão da Silva (green background, blue rhombus with a globe, and a gold stripe with the motto "Bem Unidos Façamos" written on it). The new flag was extremely popular, with 87% of the voters selecting it. da Silva said he designed this flag because he wanted a new, independent identity for the people of Brasília, and to distance the nation from the increasingly capitalist Brazil and China. It is expected that the new flag will be distributed to all the government buildings in the nation in 1 or 2 weeks, and it will become the official national flag on 25 April.

Hundredstar Bremingshire Nuclear Plant design
Saltbridge and Hundredstar agree $20 billion construction project

Saltbridge and Hundredstar have signed an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the construction and operation of the Hundrestar country's first nuclear power plant. The document was signed yesterday by Saltbridge Secretary of Energy/ Environmental & Transport, Dr. Elmer Cliff Nozumand, Saltbridge Utilities Corp. CEO, Dr Susan Sofie Brodersen and Dr. Holland Khermov, chairman of the Hundredstar Nuclear Energy Development Authority (NEDA).

The document envisages construction of two 1000 MWe VVER units in Bremingshire, Holmlock, that conform to the latest international standards in safety, Dr. Nozumand said in a statement to announce the arrangement.

The agreement determines the parties' responsibilities related to implementation of the first stage of the project, upon completion of which a nuclear power plant agreement is to be signed, Dr. Nozumand said. The construction agreement is to be concluded in 2016. Total investment in the construction of the plant is expected to be about $20 billion, it added.

The document also envisages setting up a project company that will be the customer, operator and owner of the plant, as well as the owner of the electric power it generates. During the pre-investment stage this company will have to study the proposed construction site and the national grid; select the customer-engineer and the consultant for development of a draft bankable feasibility study. The contractors for these works will be decided through international tenders, Saltbridge Utilities Corp. said.

Dr. Nozumand added that Saltbridge Utilities Corp. Is quick to work with NEDA on attracting financing for the project and is prepared to jointly offer the investment required. The corporation will also support Hundredstar in creating a nuclear infrastructure and fostering public acceptance of nuclear power. In addition, Saltbridge Utilities Corp. will supply nuclear fuel for the reactors and take back their used fuel.

TOLMAKIA DESPERATE TO EVADE BLOODSHED

The Republic of Tolmakia is desperate to avoid being drawn into the instability of the Middle-East as the conflicts there escalate. Though bound to help the Free Kingdom of Pejite in times of conflict with "all forces necessary" by the Ippheroan Treaty (signed just last June in 2014), Tolmakia has recently been noted for its discreet attempts to try and pull itself away from the kingdom's violence. Since the start of the year, some 1,000+ soldiers were pulled out from the Middle-Eastern country, but roughly the same number of troops were called in again to try and help quell the insurgency that presently threatens to turn into a civil war.

In the month's Pejite-Tolmakian summit, Tolmakia held talks again with Pejitean representatives about its participation in the conflict. The talks, though amiable failed to persuade the Pejitean government to allow Tolmakian troops to pull away or reduce their involvement. In the past bilateral conferences, Tolmakia unsuccessfully tried to negotiate the removal of most of its "offensive" military presence, and instead help through non-offensive means. According to Foreign Minister Agnes Mcanborough, the kingdom was "desperate" for foreign troops and remarked how the treaty and the hospitable nature of Tolmakia made Pejite "lucky" to have help from the republic. The next bilateral summit between the two nations is to be held in the second week of March.

After the Second Pejite War, Tolmakia declared itself as a non-interventionist state and went on a more pacific path after about 5,000 of its soldiers lost their lives and billions of Shenis were spent in just four years (from 2010 to 2014). Though becoming more pacifist, state officials signed the Ippheroan Treaty just days before the self-defense policies were put into effect on June 22 and since then the nation's military has been actively participating in the Insurgency in Pejite. Just weeks ago, senior officials from the Tolmakian government (including members of the assembly) independently voiced their opinions, stating that this move was a huge mistake and that how the bilateral treaty was approved is a wonder when the 2014 Self-Defense Act was already planned to be passed soon in the assembly. The Ippheroan Treaty being technically a mutual defense treaty (or rather a "mutual assistance treaty" involving the military forces of both nations) violates the 2014 Self-Defense Act which prohibits Tolmakia to bind itself to other nations through mutual defense pacts or any treaties that involve the force of Tolmakia's self-defense forces. The officials (who request anonymity) also suspected that there was foul play behind the Ippheroan Treaty's approval, citing the "unusually brief" period of consideration over signing it. Days after their opinions, the national government admitted that the mutual defense treaty with Pejite was "not a wise choice" and even promised to launch an inquiry into the matter to clear the issue and discover any "suspicious anomalies" behind it.

The Ippheroan Treaty has been a subject of criticism by the Tolmakian and Pejitean peoples, the former being the most critical since it means more bloodshed, taxes and overseas spending. The government has only recently started turning against the treaty though has not officially or publicly denounced it as it is a known tradition for Tolmakians to keep and respect their word "no matter the circumstances." The inquiry into the Ippheroan Treaty is expected to be underway by the next month, to be conducted as the republic continues to limit its costs and expenses abroad and pursue its desired peaceful and "quiet" path into the near future.

Prime Minister condemns attacks in Kenya; pledges government support to stop terrorists in region

Speaking in the House of Representatives this morning, Prime Minister Amadi Sithembile has condemned the brutal attack on a university in Kenya by Al-Shabab militants that has left 147 dead and lead a moment of silence in the House for those lost. The prime minister also stated that the coalition government will work with the Kenyan government on anti-terror measures and will further heighten security measures for people entering Zeyagra from Somalia. The prime minister has issued a heightened security alert at public universities across Zeyagra. Opposition Leader Luo Ngombe joined with the prime minister in condemning the attacks and expressing condolences and support to the government in Kenya.

After the recent threat of the genocide-group known as "Purga", and it's removal from all Reblian territories, with Marco Matiz back in office he has planned to build Reblia up after all the recent downfalls (Ala Zodosa, as Dictator Matiz puts it) and rebuild it into an economic powerhouse once again.

He has started by giving better funds to the military, and improving government and political standards. The Prime Council has been replaced by all-college graduates, and Matiz has agreed to meet with Zodosan President Aliman Kray on terms of ending the long-standing violence between them.

So far things look optimistic, and Matiz has dubbed it "The Clean-Up". So far the police force has been getting un-announced funds as well, in an attempt to stop the many drug organizations shifting form Zodosa and the ASR. May things turn out for the better.

Missing Nuclear Weapons Recovered

Millions of people around New Korongo breathed a sigh of relief this morning after Prime Minister Oste Jonang announced that the three missing nuclear weapons had been recovered. “The three nuclear devices were recovered during a smooth and efficient joint military operation involving personnel from the Royal Armed Forces and the Strategic Air Command. The nuclear arsenal that protects New Korongo against weapons of mass destruction is, once again, secure.” He said at the hastily organised press conference held this morning. The nuclear weapons in question were seized by an unknown paramilitary group last month after a military convoy was ambushed in Mebangy-Huro province. The prime minister told reporters that the nuclear weapons were found at an abandoned mine in the mountains of Mebangy-Huro province, but refused to comment when asked if the group responsible for the theft was supported by the government of Madabique. Little information regarding the identity and composition paramilitary group has been released by the government, but a Madabican involvement has been widely speculated since the convoy ambush last month.

While the crisis surrounding the missing nuclear weapons may be over, the political aftershocks will no doubt be felt for years to come. William Haginset, the leader of the political party Aujugid, has demanded the resignation of Jonang. He claims that the prime minister "invaded" New Korongo with its own military in an effort to recover the weapons. While the word 'invasion' may be an exaggeration, the deployment of military forces on Korongolese soil during recovery operations has generated a large amount of controversy. Banag Jangri, the leader of New Korongo's largest opposition party, has called for a new law which severely restricts the Royal Armed Forces when they operate on Korongolese soil. Jonang has admitted that a comprehensive review of the recovery effort will be carried out, though he has not stated that he will support any new legislation. Jonang and his party are not the only political group to have been hurt by the crisis. Korongo Jas is still without a leader after Jeni Bortumonun was arrested in relation to the missing nuclear weapons. This incident could lead to significant changes in the Korongolese political landscape during the next elections.

Military retains sizable border patrol due to ongoing violence

FORT VOROSHILOV – After two years of warfare which claimed the lives of over 900 soldiers and thousands of rebels, The Marxist State's withdrawal from its former client state, The Snow Shield, concluded this morning when the last convoy of soldiers drove through the Voroshilov Pass. The conflict began in March of 2013, when the region's Marxist State-appointed leader, Dimitri Zhaben, was assassinated, and the capital city of New Worker's Citadel was seized. The rebellion was heavily supported by foreign sources, and the rebel's command of The Snow Shield's harsh terrain made combating them extremely difficult.

The withdrawal marked the end of 32 years of occupation of the Snow Shield, which previously was a tribal region without an established government. Until the rebellion began, the Snow Shield was used as a place to house political prisoners. The native inhabitans, meanwhile, were made to work in mines and factories with the government's official goal being to 'civilize' them in order to begin a transition to socialism. Protests against this system had previously only been small-scale, but the rebellion brought immense pressure from Marxist State citizens to end the occupation.

Premier Morales campaigned on a platform of ending the war. She won with over 60% of the vote, and within two weeks of her inauguration last January, a peace agreement had been brokered with the rebel Revolutionary Council of the Snow Shield. However, withdrawal ended up being a long and difficult process. Thousands of prisoners, tens of thousands of soldiers, and 5 billion marks worth of mining equipment had to be relocated. Additionally, not all rebel groups in The Snow Shield agreed with the peace deal, and pockets of violence continued throughout the withdrawal period.

Sometime within the last four months, it is still unclear when or why, the Revolutionary Council broke down, and any semblance of an established government in The Snow Shield vanished. Dozens of varying tribes and rebel groups have been involved in heavy fighting and the entire region has descended into anarchy. The Marxist State has ignored this conflict, with the military only acting in self-defense during the withdrawal. In a press briefing, Foreign Affairs Minister Tam Diao stated that "easing their road to independence was not part of the agreement." There is still no established government, and the capital as well as the prefabricated mining towns that dot the landscape have largely been emptied, leaving only tribal villages as the primary settlements.

Premier Morales has stated in the strongest terms that there will be no further intervention in the affairs of the Snow Shield, simply stating that the fate of the nation is "up to the people now." During Question Time in Tuesday's Council Session, former Premier and current Leader of the Opposition Alexi Barkov decried the situation in The Snow Shield as a 'humanitarian disaster.' "Thousands are being killed," he said, "and all because of the Comrade Premier's desire to run out with our tails between our legs." The Premier retorted by blaming the previous government for creating the "conditions of oppression" that caused the rebellion. "My sole desire to minimize the damage Comrade Barkov caused, to prevent the deaths of any more of our citizens."

The loss of The Snow Shield's resource and labor base has not had the profound effect on the economy that many experts feared it would. The Economics Ministry reported a GDP growth of only .2% last year, and exports of raw materials are down 29%, but the mark has remained steady in the international market. In Council chambers yesterday Premier Morales took credit for lessening the economic impact through the government's investment in renewable energy sources.

Nearly 30,000 troops remain posted at bases located near mountain passes that serve as the only land access between The Snow Shield and The Marxist State. Premier Morales has ordered these bases to accept civilian refugees, but at last report less than 200 had arrived. It is unclear what faction will emerge victorious from the violence, or what the consequences will be for The Marxist State.

Military Operations in Mebangy-Huro Province Cease

Thousands of men and women of the Korongolese Army deployed to the province of Mebangy-Huro are being sent home after the Ministry of Defence announced that the Royal Armed Forces would be formally ending operations in the region. This news comes less than twenty four hours after the Prime Minister, Oste Jonang, announced that the three nuclear weapons stolen last month had been recovered. The military had been deployed to the area to search of the missing nuclear weapons. Senny Danmerat, the leader of a group of protestors who picketed outside parliament throughout the nuclear weapons crisis, praised the decision to withdraw military forces from Mebangy-Huro. However, he also stated that they should never have been deployed in the first place. "The deployment of Korongolese soldiers on Korongolese soil in a policing role is tantamount to a military coup." He said to one of our reporters. These words echo criticisms originating from William Haginset, the leader of the political party Aujugid, who called for the prime minister's resignation yesterday. Recent polls indicate that 38% of Korongolese citizens supported the involvement of the military in the recovery of the missing nuclear weapons, while 34% opposed it and 28% were unsure. If these results are representative, the prime minister could have a difficult time during the next elections as those who are undecided make up their minds.

Hundredstar offered Excalibur Defense fighter jets leasing deal

Stevencousinians aerospace and defence company Excalibur Defense says it has packaged a “competitive and cost-effective” deal for the Hundredstarian government to lease its GF-84 Gagak Multi-role fighter aircraft. Excalibur Defense spokesmen said the company is fine-tuning the deal with the Hundredstarian government but said he could not disclose the numbers of aircraft or costs at present.

“The leasing deal between Excalibur Defense and the Hundredstarian government will include the transfer of technology, which will be capable of adapting our open technology to integrate with the existing Hundredstarian legacy systems,” he said.

In releted news Dr. Harris Baygents of Hundredstar on Friday, unveiled a plan to acquire more aircraft to boost the capability of the Hundredstar Air Force. Presiding over the Air Force change of command in Bledllyn, the Prime Minister said the Armed Forces would purchase eight Multi-role fighter, six attack helicopters, two-medium range cargo aircraft, and UAV systems.

POLLS OPEN IN COUNCIL ELECTIONS
Can the Socialists hold onto to power in the legislature?

WORKER'S CITADEL - At 7:00 this morning, Premier Morales cast the ceremonial 'first vote' at the polling station located inside the National Library. It marked the first day of The Marxist State's one-week voting period. Her Socialist party made huge gains the previous election three years ago, and although she holds a 62% approval rating, polls also indicate that the legislature holds only a 32% approval rating, with 41% disapproving and 27% unsure. Many may back the Marxist-Leninst party in hopes that their centrism can push more legislation through. The Communists, who lost over half their seats in the past election, have drawn on the Snow Shield crisis to try to motivate their supporters. Party Chairman Huy Tankara accused both other major parties of being 'counterrevolutionary' for failing to protect the State's interests and for failing to grant the Snow Shield '"the joys of socialism" through full annexation.

Premier Morales also faces the remote possibility of losing her job. Although Premier elections are not scheduled for another 3 years, if enough of her opponents are elected into power, particularly the Communists who are deeply opposed to her pacifist foreign policy, she may face a vote of no confidence. A vote of no confidence requires a 2/3rds majority and if passed the process for electing a new Premier would begin immediately. Although two such votes have been proposed, the Marxist-Leninists have not gotten behind them, and so they have failed.

Turnout in the previous election was 72%, but the Elections Commissioner, Bao Nguyen, is confident that turnout could potentially increase this year. "We have expanded polling hours, and encouraged the labor councils to give workers extra time to vote during the day, since although polls are open until the evening many may be unwilling to go then." The Elections Commission began accepting mail-in ballots from the elderly, infirm, and deployed soldiers last week. Nguyen declined to give exact figures.

The unknown factor in this election is the anarchist Free Society party. They won a surprising 51 seats in the previous election, an increase from only 12 in the previous Council, largely through organizing on university campuses. Many of the councilors elected are themselves students. They have, as one might expect, refused to work with any of the main parties, which gave the Socialist party the ability to form the minority government. It remains to be seen if they will be able to build on the gains they made previously.

All Marxist State citizens above the age of 18 who are not currently imprisoned are automatically registered to vote. To vote, simply bring your identification card to any polling place. Polling locations are open from 7:00 AM until 10:00 PM every day.

The Red is Expanding?

Recently, Yztal Province's Red District is set to be expanded by 4 blocks in the coming weeks. This is estimated to increase profits of the district by 95% as well as bring in an influx of new tourists hoping to enjoy themselves in the famous district. The Red District, although commonly referred to as "The Red", is Rhodevus's largest legally sanctioned Red District area, where people can enjoy relaxed Rhodeve laws, as well as the legal use of substances that are illegal elsewhere. The district has relaxed laws regarding marijuana and tobacco products, allowing their usage from the age of 16, instead of 19 like the rest of the country. The district also has two nude beaches and relaxed drinking laws. The Red is a large tourist attraction bringing in over 8 million tourists a year. There is an age restriction, so that the minimum age to enter the district is 16 years or older.

Railroad Refurbishing nearly Complete

It has been a long 2 years since the reconstruction of the Rhodeve Railway. But, it seems like the work will soon be over. After a recent statement from the Minister of Travel, the Railroad system should be complete in the next 2-4 months, as long as there are no delays. For those who do not know, the Rhodeve Rail System has been in construction for the past 2 years, after a breakthrough in Hydrogen fuel technology. It was unanimously decided by the Senate, that the Trans-Rhodeve Railway would be upgraded in sections to allow for the use of Hydrogen Fuel powered trains. With the system almost complete, the coal-power based trains have been removed from the tracks, and are beginning to be replaced by Rhodeve manufactured Hydro-Trains. The clean water produced by the trains will go to serve passengers, while all extra water will be put into Rhodevus's many freshwater lakes.

Queen Announces Plans For Space

Queen Diana has issued a statement this morning regarding to the many questions relating to the Rhodeve Aeronautical Space Program (RASP). She said many things about the importance of space and scientific research in space, both inside and outside our solar system. She went on to express gratitude with the United Soviet Jason Republic, in their journey to the Mun, saying, "We are all so pleased that we have been given the chance to work so closely with our ally, the USJR, in their manned-mission to the Mun. This will be the first manned-mission to the Mun, since the 20th century. I would also like to congratulate Dr. Arnold Stephenson on being chosen as our astronaut in this event. He will be working alongside Jasonian and other Ophionite cosmonauts in studying the Mun's surface."

After a brief question and answer period with the soon-to-be astronaut, Queen Diana stated before the press, "Once again, i would like to confirm that Rhodevus does not, has not and will not have any plans to create a colony on the Mun, even though we will work very close with the Soviets in the creation of theirs. We have already come to an agreement with the Party Soviet, allowing for Rhodeve scientists to be allowed access to the colony's scientific facilities, so that we can experiment while there is a lower amount of gravity. We do however, already have plans to design and create an International Space Port on the moon, Titan, near the planet Nubar. Yes, you heard me correctly, an International Space Port. The ISP will be built using donations from governments around the world, as well as companies, corporations and any individual who would like to donate. For each 50$ donation by any civilian around Sunalaya, their name will be etched into a wall in the Port. There needs to be many breakthroughs in astronautical research and exploration before this task can begin in earnest, but we do have a large stage-plan to facilitate the research of each component needed to make the ISP a reality. We are hoping to finish the research and development aspect of this project by 2050, and begin actual construction by 2055."

This Space Port will allow for any and all space ships from Earth to have access beyond the solar system. It also leaves room for the creation of colonies on Titan and research further into space. The entire step-by-step plan has been posted on the Rhodeve government website, but a brief summary of the first few projects to be completed by the end of the year are:

-Transportation Containers for Tree, Grass and Other Basic Plant Seeds
-Transportation Containers for Grain, Fruit, and vegetable Seeds
-Basic, Durable Cloning Technology (Phase 1 of Animal Cloning Project)
-Satellites and Rovers to be sent to Titan to take initial pictures, samples and experiments on the planet

Black Cat takes Marche Blanc

- An elite crew of Black Cat took over Blanc City, capital of the island country of Marche Blanc, after intense bombings that took place all morning. The remnant units of the army that was protecting the government of the Witch-King Marbus were mostly killed at sight by members of the 11th Magic Division outside the capital. No mercy was shown to the officials and ministers as well. Marbus was also killed when he was trying to escape his palace. Kendra Kaishu, the Commander of the elite crew, declared the dissolution of the monarchy before she crushed the crown of the dead king in front of cameras: "I hereby declare the end of the monarchic rule in Marche Blanc. The country is now under our control. We order all civilians to remain inside their homes until further notice. Anyone caught outside, man, woman or child, will be immediately killed."

As of now, Marche Blanc is currently under occupation. Several key people of the former government were arrested and searches are being conducted in the palace and the house of the council. The reason of these searches are unknown.

Meteorologists Warn of Extreme Winter

With less than two months remaining until the official beginning of winter, the nation’s top meteorologists have warned New Korongo that it may be facing its worst winter in a century. The National Meteorological Society (NMS) hosted a press conference this morning and presented the findings of a three hundred-page report which examines winter weather predictions across all areas of New Korongo. To the average Korongolese citizen, the numerous facts and figures presented at the press conference were without meaning. However, to the many professional meteorologists that attended, the findings are quite clear. “Recent weather patterns indicate that the winter of 2015 will be among the worst ever recorded in New Korongo” Professor Arbi Fekaai, the chief representative of the NMS at the conference, warned. “The record-breaking storm that hit Mebangy-Ityan earlier this year was the first in a series of severe weather phenomena driven by climate change. The winter of 2015 will be the second. We expect abnormal levels of snowfall across the country and below-zero temperatures throughout the day in the southern provinces.” She then explained, emphasising climate change as the primary cause. The NMS has implored citizens to stock up on food and other essential supplies for the winter, especially people living in rural areas which may become isolated.

The government has not made any official statements regarding the warnings of the NMS yet but Inati Tuliaga, the leader of the environmentalist party Bernu Jas, said that the winter “was a punishment orchestrated by environmentally unfriendly industries” when she appeared on national radio at noon. In response to the NMS press conference, the Korongolese Farmers Union (KFU) has announced that it will lobby for government aid over the coming months to aid farmers that are heavily affected by the winter. “If the predictions of the National Meteorological Service prove to be accurate, the national farming industry will face substantial losses that could have permanent effects if the government does not step in.” A KFU spokesperson said to our reporters. According to the KFU, the Korongolese farmers are most vulnerable during winter and abnormally severe winter conditions could lead to a irreversible decline of the industry as a whole.

DISASTER: 220 DEAD IN MINE EXPLOSION

LIPETSBUND, WESTERN REGION -- The small western town of Lipetsbund has experienced a tragic incident that has shocked the entire nation. Approximately 10 hours ago, an explosion sealed off the entrance to the Lipetsbund Coal Mines, where a majority of the townspeople are employed. A miner called from help from one of the 10 'refugee chambers' spread throughout the mine.

20 minutes later, rescuers arrived by air from the city of Calderio. They dug their way through an emergency access point, and entered the mine. But about 15 minutes after they entered, there was a second, more massive explosion from inside the mine, which sent flames pouring out of the entrance. By this point, nearly one thousand residents had gathered near the mine, concerned about their friends and loved ones. When the explosion occurred, they began panicking and running away, some were injured by being trampled. The heat was so intense that some of the rescue support staff standing several hundred feet away from the mine entrance were burned.

45 miners have been rescued from the mine since the second explosion, with 44 more still awaiting rescue. Rescues began 3 hours ago when inspectors determined that methane levels inside the mine had reached a safe level. Many of those rescued were working near the mine entrance and had just enough time to take cover in the refuge chambers when they heard the explosion alarm. Some managed to survive the first explosion and then find refuge. The initial 9 rescuers who entered the mine were killed. Omar Batal, chief of the Lipetsbund Fire Department, said that while some people survived the first explosion with injuries, it is "nearly impossible" that anyone outside of the refuge chambers would have been able to survive the second explosion. There are reports that the doors on two of the refuge chambers failed in the second explosion, killing 20 of the miners who were inside and critically injuring 10 others.

It is, by all accounts, the worst mining disaster and one of the worst labor disaster in the state's history. Previously, the deadliest mine related incident was a collapse 35 years ago in the town of Grigorybyrsk that killed 83 miners. A memorial to the workers now stands in the center of that town. About 10% of the entire workforce is employed in mining. In recent years, there has been an average of 23 mining accident deaths a year, a significant improvement from 153 per year just twenty years ago.

The Labour Ministry put out an official statement, stating that there will be a full investigation into the causes of the explosions and the chamber failure. Military Police have arrived and cordoned off a perimeter around the entrance. As elections drag on with the Socialist party holding a slight lead in exit polls, the leaders of the opposition parties were quick to lay blame on the government for the disaster. Marxist-Leninist chair Alexi Barkov blamed "policies of overspending" which stretched the resources of the Labour Ministry's Inspections Department, although official reports show that the mine was inspected on schedule last May and given a favorable report. Communist Party chairman Huy Tankara called it indicative of the affects of subverting "worker's autonomy in favor of bureaucracy." Green Party chairwoman Emilia Warfdale gave a press briefing where she stated that "this disaster shows that mining is dangerous, and it is deadly. It kills our environment as well as our workers, and we must implement more sustainable practices to reduce the practice of mining." Premier Morales has only issued a brief statement expressing sympathy for the families of the victims and indicating her intention to travel to the site. She did not respond to the political attacks.

The Social Democratic Party, led by Sithembile, failed to win an overall majority. Combined, the SDP and the Unionists have a majority of 141 seats. Prime Minister Chima Bapoto, in office since 2007, but without enough MPs for the Liberal Freedom Party to form another government, later announced he would be going to Royal Palace to give King Olbolde his resignation.
