Likely the war crimes committed by both government and rebel forces during the countries previous civil war and ongoing insurgency.
Extremist campaign by Ansar al-Sunna
One horrendous crime was the attempted extermination of Christians, Shia Muslims and other religious minorities by Islamist militants during the Qahranian Civil War. Ansar al-Sunna, the largest salafist militant group of the anti-government Islamists, engaged in a systematic campaign of mass killings, in which anywhere from 8000 to 14,000 people were killed. Militants raided villages, forcing those inside to either choose between converting to Sunni Islam, or being killed. The vast majority of victims were shot, but many were also decapitated, burned, thrown from buildings or even buried alive. In several cases, militants recorded videos of the footage and uploaded it to the internet.
Government war crimes
On many occasions, government forces committed atrocities as well. In many cases, government forces used indiscriminate munitions, such as barrel bombs or rocket artillery, in populated areas. In Fahra, a town in Southeast Qahrania that was taken over by Free Islamic Front (a more liberal Islamist group), government forces retook the town and immediately began reprisals against those they deemed to have helped the militants.
On multiple occasions, government drones and war planes targeted medical facilities, aid posts or refugee camps. The worst instance of this was the Naziran Infirmary airstrike. A government operated Wing Loong II drone (made by China and supplied by the UAE via Sudan) dropped two munitions on the hospital, killing 78 people. A second incident occurred during June 2020, in which another Wing Loong II drone bombed a military cadet college in Jazira, Southwest Qahrania. The airstrike killed 29 unarmed recruits, all aged between 16 and 19.
