Worldbuilding Based Off The Internet

Postby Guild Commonwealth » Wed May 17, 2023 11:19 pm

Does anyone have ideas for the dividing the greater internet community into ten distinct groups that I can base factions on?
My nation is run collectively by ten guilds, and because of some additional non-nationstates lore, I want to make it into a representation of the internet from about 2006 to present.

One ‘guild’ would definitely be a faction of forum-goers.

Includes any forum sites, like 4chan, or possibly NS too.

Another " Guild" would may be the youtubers or all the content creators present on YouTube

You can do a guild based off of piracy sites like the Pirate Bay. The theming is rather obvious (pirates, bandits, thieves, bootleggers/smugglers, etc.)

Here's some ideas that I hope help.

Online retailers (Amazon, eBay, JustEat(?) etc)
Social networks (Facebook moms)
Passive Entertainment (Youtube, Spotify)
Interactive Entertainment (Games)
Education (Wikipedia, Duolingo)
News
Financial services (online banking, bitcoin, share trading etc)

Thanks, I will use a 4chan inspired group. I'll probably combine it with a few other communities.

Good idea. There are a few ways I can use that. I'll probably divide YouTubers into subcategories first. Fandoms (yes, the ones often labeled as "cringe" and stuff like that) and deviant art/fanfiction things are for sure going to be represented by the Thalia Consortium, so I won't need to take those content creators into account at this point.

I like that. Since they're meant to form one of ten government departments, they probably won't be those things in the conventional sense, but there are ways for seemingly legitimate organizations to do those things. Thanks!

This is really good. I didn't even consider Education or Retailers. I think I've got a good spot for financial services. I appreciate your suggestion list!

you could try basing each guild off of how people interact with the internet. Like 'lurkers', 'influencers', 'online bullies', etc.

Not to mention trolls, mods, and normal people

Thanks again, I think it was you who posted that character profile template some time ago.
And thank you for the suggestion. I am going to create one of the guilds to represent the negative aspects of internet interaction. Influencers are good to consider and I think I might have an idea how to structure their guild.

Mods are pretty much the role of the GRA. Makes sense since in an off-nationstates storyline, they're the group some people are trying to infiltrate to essentially stage a coup. I'm probably going to have normal people as the non-affiliated citizens that aren't part of any guild. Thank you for your suggestion!
