[Southland]

May 11, 2013 - Malcolm Sands, the tall and controversial mayor of New Fransisca known for his brash and intellectual personality, unwavering commitment to left-wing politics and economics, and seen by some as a rising star in the Socialist League, was shot and killed while out on a nightwalk. The perpetrator was a member of a Shinto cult known as Aquarius-II. He said he was angered by Sands's call to investigate the group over allegations of sexual and physical abuse of members (all of which were vindicated in later court trials). The assassination and the subsequent raid on their overseas compound was responsible for ending the Shinto craze that had briefly swept Southland. His death has also spawned numerous conspiracy theories to this day, especially because of his controversial politics and personality.

13 May 1941 - Siege of Odessa begins during the Great Patriotic War


In our timeline, the Axis invasion of the Russian Empire began on 19 December 1940. Russian Raids along the Southern portion of the Front were initially very successful, seizing almost all of Romanian Bessarabia. However, the Rapid German advance to the north forced a Russian retreat in the south to avoid being encircled. By early May, The Axis Invasion was gaining considerable Ground Each day accross the entire front.

Odessa was a key target of the Axis invasion, as an important port city in the region. In this region, Romainian, Italian, Bulgarian, and German soldiers were all involved in the seige of the city.

It, along with the Siege of Kiev, became the longest bloodiest battles of the war. 945,000 Russians and 656,000 Axis Soldiers were killed in the city and its outskirts, along with 92,000 civilians. The siege did not lift until 21 August 1942, 15 months and 1.62 million lives later.

At many times, It looked as though Odessa was going to fall. However, Russian forces were never entirely removed or cut off from the city. The Axis offensive in the east was brought to a halt in the cities of Odessa, Kiev, and Minsk, and as soon as the siege was brought to an end, the advance towards victory would begin.

The famous Aqua-English War ended with the Empire of the Aquaria's victory against the Commonwealth of England. An unequal treaty, known as the Treaty of Leÿsritt, confirmed the Aquaria's right to travel freely in the English Channel, which became an important reason for the Aquaria's ability to expand to other continents later on.

May 14, 1939 - Southland Civil War: In the First Battle of Jeannine-Qud, the fascist insurgents (called the National Traditionalists) successfully captured the Ürümmu port city after two weeks of fighting. In the immediate aftermath, hundreds of men of the Oyghan people that didn't flee were either summarily executed or thrown into jails to be "processed" later, and the women that were near the shore were driven into the sea under the orders of commander Rehovol Gorshkow.

May 14, 2001 - In a speech widely broadcasted across Southland, Chancellor Kevin MacCroid officially apologized to Ürümmu's native inhabitants (which consists of the human Oyghan tribe, the desert Elves, and the Orcs) for nuclear testing conducted in their deserts from the late 1940s to the late 1960s that left the Oyghanis and elves stricken by radiation sickness and cancer, the residential school system in place from the 1880s to the end of the Great Oyghani Revolt in 1912, and for the forced sterilization of women from all three until the start of the Southland Civil War in 1937. Notably the normally stoic MacCroid started shedding tears when relating the story of sterilized Oyghani and elf women who would wander into the desert after being unable to conceive in the hopes that the elements would end their suffering. As part of that speech, he promised to triple government investments to the Autonomous Region up to 2009 as compensation. Said investments ultimately helped accelerate the rapid economic growth Ürümmu had already been experiencing since the early 1990s, and helped turn it into one of the wealthiest provinces/regions in the country.

With the Brasilistani Capitol Building having been leveled The People's Republic of Brasilistan formally surrendered to the Independent Republic of Boldonia. What followed was an occupation period that saw Boldonian forces occupying the entire nation attempting to form it into a submissive democratic puppet. Eventually though this would backfire leading to the Second Boldonian-Brasilistani War in December, 2022.

Osman Shakhoud, who was head of the Qahrania Broadcasting Service (state TV), is shot and killed by two gunman while getting out of his car in Quriyat.

Two gunmen rushed up on foot and ten shots were fired at the car, striking the 58-year-old Shakhoud in the head, chest and stomach, as well as his 22-year-old driver, who had just shut the door of the car. Shakhoud was pronounced dead at the scene, but his driver survived with serious injuries.

Ansar al-Sunna, an Islamist militant organization, claimed responsibility for the murder. Two suspects were located several hours later and were killed in a shootout with local police officers.

May 17, 1961 - The first bullet train line, connecting Southland City with New Brooksfield, commenced operation. It was somewhat controversial in New Brooksfield because back then the city was known for auto manufacturing, and some feared the train would put the industry at risk. Despite threats of a strike by auto workers, the inaugural voyage went off without incident. Today, bullet trains and maglev lines are a staple of the Southlander public transport system.
