Ealhswith was not a kingdom just yesterday.
It was still dark when the bakers started in on their daily routine, holding their coffee cups, yawning and scratching their heads. Inside the stone walls, row upon row of houses for clerks and artisans covered this burgeoning city, and the bakers' were always the first to open. They welcomed the council rubbish collectors taking their first meal breaks away from their loud trucks, which were the only vehicles on these streets around this time. They talked loudly in groups, pointing and looking in the direction of the castle above, where she stood watching.
The people would no doubt have much to talk about today. They were the citizens of another country yesterday. In about three hours from now, they would open their morning papers and found that its name had changed to become the Royal Herald, not Principality, and if they opened the internet from their phones they would see the new name of their country. They would welcome the chance to talk about something exciting, something to distract their mind from their daily lives—working on a minimum wage, paying bills on time, and perhaps where to buy cheaper groceries next week.
There was nothing else to look at from her binoculars. Most of the historic houses of the prosperous taxpayers below were still dark, their owners not yet up. So she closed the window and stood in silence. Every now and again her advisors would come forward, like anxious cats, and pointed to a large pile of papers on her desk.
