Constituent Assembly Elections Called!

Postby Daniel-Franklin » Wed Jul 20, 2022 8:56 pm

Constituent Assembly elections have been called to begin working on a new draft constitution for the Liberated Territories of Daniel-Franklin. There are plans to rename the country as well, well before such a supreme law can be ratified. The stated objective of this proposed constitution, according to the country's interim head of state, Major General Elias Markham, Chairman of the Committee for National Liberation, is "the creation of a modern, democratic, progressive, revolutionary, socialist, and secular state, which shall better serve the communal and collective needs of society and make the State more conducive to the harmonious and benevolent interests of all Franklinites, rather than simply the elite few." Markham, of course, led the successful leftist insurgency that toppled the theocratic military dictatorship of Generalissimo Adam R. Turner this summer and also defeated the Royalist faction in the same civil war.

Currently, the following political parties have been authorized to compete in said contest, which shall be conducted by proportional representation:

1. The National Liberation Front (NLF), the party of Markham, his government, and his sympathizers. Leftist in orientation, it favors a hybrid or mixed-market economy, secularism, civil liberties, and a neutralist foreign policy overseas.
2. The Democratic Center Party (DCP), a combination of ex-monarchists, Christian Democrats, and other moderate elements alienated both from Markham, Turner, and the Royalist Old Guard.
3. The Communist Union Party (CUP), an authoritarian far left collectivist party that favors a "dictatorship of the proletariat." It is seen as largely Trostkyite in political persuasion.
4. The Economic Reform Party (ERP), a center-right, pro-business, social liberal, largely viewed with suspicion as have possible royalist sentiments, but at least absolved of Turnerite sympathies due to its lack of social conservatism.
5. The Feminist Action Party, a bloc of self-declared "progressive feminists" has split from the NLF for fears that it might be too civil-libertarian on key social issues where the FAP favors a more authoritarian stance.
