Unofficial/cultural start of summer: Shalottes do not recognise a 'summer'. The Shalotte calendar divides the year across two 'months', or 'super-months' as they are commonly known by foreigners - Br'ghaéne, which translates roughly into 'the light month' and starts on 1 May, contains the most pleasant weather and the longest days of the year.
Approximate official start date of summer (solstice): There is no 'official summer' in Shalotte. It shares the summer solstice with the rest of the Northern hemisphere.
Unofficial/cultural end of summer: Sahaéne, or 'the dark month', starts on 1 November. Weather tends to deteriorate much sooner than that, however.
Approximate official end date of summer (equinox): There is no 'official summer' in Shalotte.

Let's Talk About the Weather
Describe your nation's biome(s) (e.g. desert, ocean, space, etc.): Oceanic
What's the average daily temperature throughout summer? The average temperature in July is 9.5°C.
Does your nation experience humidity, dry heat or something else (explain)? As an oceanic climate with high rainfall, Shalotte experiences an average 80% humidity in summer.
What/when was your nation's highest recorded summer temperature? On 19 July 2022, the ciéll-Hiort recorded a record high temperature of 17.2°C.
What/when was your nation's lowest recorded summer temperature? On 3 January 1855, the ciéll-Hiort recorded a record low temperature of -21°C. No records exist before this date.
What time does the sun or its equivalent rise and set on the summer solstice? ~04:30
How long are the days during the summer? ~18 hours
Is your nation vulnerable to any natural disasters during the summer, and if so, which? Shalotte, while having generally unpleasant weather year-round, is not considered to be at risk of natural disasters. Extreme weather, earthquakes, and other such events are exceedingly rare. Gale-force winds are common and pose particular risks to sea bird fowlers (who tend to climb about on the coastal cliffs), however.

Let's Talk About Your Nation
How do your nation's people feel about summer? 'Summer' in Shalotte is the time of year when the weather is sufficiently tolerable to be outside for longer periods of time. As such, it is when most work is done during the year - particularly in regards to farmers, sea bird fowlers, and other 'outdoor' and seasonable vocations, as they build-up food stores ready for the winter.
Does your nation celebrate any holidays during the summer, and if so, which? The midway points of both Sahaéne and Br'ghaéne are commemorated by festivities, and most religious holidays (besides one analogous to Halloween, and another analogous to Yule) take place in the warmer periods.
What are your people's favorite things to do during the summer? Settlements regularly hold fetes and other outdoor activities during the warmest weeks in July.
Can you describe your people's favorite vacations or trips to go on, if any? Shalottes rarely go on vacation. Trips to Alauna, the capital, are as close as they may get.
What are the three most popular places in your nation during the summer? Alauna, and possibly Hadarin Bay.
How many tourists visit your nation during the summer, and where are their favorite destinations (other than above)? Tourism is a negligible, verging on non-existent, industry in Shalotte.
Do your nation's schoolchildren go on summer break, and if so, generally through which dates? Schooling in Shalotte is non-compulsory. In rural areas, children who are part of any community schooling schemes may take time off to help families with summer work.
Which crime(s) experience(s) the greatest increases, by how much and why? Drunken behaviour tends to increase considerably in 'summer'.
Is there anything else special about summer in your nation? 'Summer' is a time for work for most Shalottes. Before the weather deteriorates closer to Sahaéne, once most of the work has been completed, tends to be a time of relaxation, when the weather still isn't bad enough, and the days not short enough, to be stuck inside.

Let's Talk About Your Nation

Most of the excitement is because of events that take place during this period than anything else. Events such as: school holidays, concerts, festivals, sports competitions, exhibitions etc.
It's a great time to own solar panels as well if you live in the south and central areas which is something that is encouraged.

Does your nation celebrate any holidays during the summer, and if so, which?
•Multiple festivals ranging from music concerts, cultural mainstays, film festivals, tech exhibitions etc.
• The King's Holiday, which isn't an actual holiday for the people but it's activities are followed extensively by the press.
• Midsummer, June 24th
• Empire Day, July 1st
• Scottie's Day, July 2nd
• Basketfaire, sometime in August

What are your people's favorite things to do during the summer?
• Go to festivals and events.

• Go to the beach.
• Travel to cooler(temperature-wise)places.
Can you describe your people's favorite vacations or trips to go on, if any?
• The colony of Hospean Border Islands which is just a ferry ride away from the south-eastern coast.

• Other countries that don't get as warm as south and central Hospe.
What are the three most popular places in your nation during the summer?
Freeland City- Because celebrity parties, block parties, yacht parties, celebrity yacht block parties, royalty parties etc. The beach is nice too and the Series 1 Freeland Harbour Grand Prix holds around this time.
Viktoria City- Has that beach house/seaside town aesthetic going on. The picturesque city is know for it's pastel colours, white beaches and popularizing seersucker suits in Hospe. The Ekot Pleasure Pier is a sight to see on Empire Day with fireworks and a guaranteed appearance from a core member of the royal family. It's great on other days too with lots of fun carnival rides.
The township of Felicie - Felicie is placed strategically in Hospe, in that it gets all the summery sunlight of the south and central regions but retains the fairly cool temperatures of the north with only about half the rain making it perfect for people who like the summer vibe but hate the heat. Canals winding through the town also provide a romantic air especially in the evenings as couples can be seen having dinner on the many floating restaurants. The daytime doesn't have to be dull either as the numerous, well preserved castles, ancient structures and fortifications of the kingdoms of old can be toured extensively with escape rooms, scavenger hunts and puzzles being available during these tours.
How many tourists visit your nation during the summer, and where are their favorite destinations (other than above)?
One of the major contributors to the economy is tourism, so there are millions of tourists visiting Hospe in Summer.
•An iconic tourist hotspot is the capital itself. Mirus is easily one of Hospe's most beautiful cities and has the added advantage of being the location of the King's palace.

Primary and Secondary Schools - late June to late September.
Universities and above - at administration's discretion.
Which crime(s) experience(s) the greatest increases, by how much and why?
Theft and vandalism because you have a lot of young people with a lot of free time gathering in one place a lot.
Is there anything else special about summer in your nation?
Other than the aforementioned activities, not really.

Unofficial/cultural start of summer: The school year ends on or before 30 June, and hence "summer" is held to start the first week of July.
Approximate official start date of summer (solstice): June 21-22, due to us being in the Northern Hemisphere.
Unofficial/cultural end of summer: Liberation Day, on 3 September, or the Monday following it if it falls on a weekend. Schools go back after this date.
Approximate official end date of summer (equinox): September 21-22, due to us being in the Northern Hemisphere.

Let's Talk About the Weather
Describe your nation's biome(s) (e.g. desert, ocean, space, etc.): We sit in an archipelago in the North Atlantic near overlapping major tectonic plates. Hence, the biomes are somewhat variable; the West Coast tends to have temperate rainforest, the East Coast has more of a Mediterranean-style woodland, and the centre can vary widely between river valley plains and more mountainous plateaus and ranges.
What's the average daily temperature throughout summer? 25-30ºC highs, with 15-20ºC lows, are de rigueur.
Does your nation experience humidity, dry heat or something else (explain)? The West Coast is very humid in the summer, averaging around 75% relative humidity, and the East Coast is still decently humid despite having low summer precipitation, averaging around 65%. Most inland regions match the East Coast's humidity averages due to usually being on the leeward side of the mountains and hence having an Eastern-style precipitation pattern.
What/when was your nation's highest recorded summer temperature? 43.0ºC, on 24 July 1955 at Bitterfeld in the southern part of the province of New Burgundy, itself the nation's southernmost province.
What/when was your nation's lowest recorded summer temperature? -1.0ºC, on 15 July 1979 at Carruthers in the interior of the province of New Hibernia, the nation's northernmost province.
What time does the sun or its equivalent rise and set on the summer solstice? Ranging from 4:30-5:00am to 7:30-8:30pm depending on how far north and east you are. We don't observe Daylight Savings' Time, hence these times are earlier than they are in a lot of countries in comparable latitudes.
How long are the days during the summer? Usually peaking out at around 15 hours of sunlight.
Is your nation vulnerable to any natural disasters during the summer, and if so, which? On occasion, we'll get hurricanes or tropical storms, or conversely wildfires if there's a good drought on. Earthquakes that we get are not tied to season.

Let's Talk About Your Nation
How do your nation's people feel about summer? The sunniest and usually driest time of year! The rest of the year can get pretty gloomy and foggy in most areas, so summer is often treated as a welcome respite.
Does your nation celebrate any holidays during the summer, and if so, which? Summer is effectively holiday-less, though a proposal to institute a bank holiday on the first Monday of August has occasionally gained traction.
What are your people's favorite things to do during the summer? Hitting the beach, hiking, taking meals on restaurant terraces, hosting cookouts, outdoor festivals, and outdoor sporting events.
Can you describe your people's favorite vacations or trips to go on, if any? Upper-class Maideans may hit their private cottages in the hill country or travel abroad, especially to the Mediterranean, the Caribbean; working-class Maideans are often accused of taking rowdy weekends "on the lash" in unfamiliar cities with their mates, or to our neighbours in Palmira because flights, lodging, food, and (crucially) alcohol tend to be very cheap.
What are the three most popular places in your nation during the summer? Our largest city of Moritzburg, of course, but second and third place are increasingly taken by the Avalonian Hill Country in the north and the Golden Islands to the southeast of Moritzburg.
How many tourists visit your nation during the summer, and where are their favorite destinations (other than above)? An estimated 28.5 million tourists visited the Maidas in 2019, and their favourite destinations aside from Moritzburg tend to be our other major cities such as Dassania (our national capital), Santa Maria (capital of the Spanish province of Axacán), and St Charles (the largest English-speaking city).
Do your nation's schoolchildren go on summer break, and if so, generally through which dates? As mentioned above, school years in primary, secondary, and post-secondary education are designed to have breaks in July and August. This varies by region, but as an example, Moritzburg's public schools let out on 30 June in 2022 and resumed instruction on 6 September.
Which crime(s) experience(s) the greatest increases, by how much and why? Summary offences such as public intoxication, vandalism, and simple assault may double in some areas, while serious indictable offences such as murder, rape, and distribution of drugs might go up slightly and are often combined with intoxication offences. Interestingly, there is only a limited correlation between the summer season and driving while impaired, even though average consumption of alcohol goes up substantially in this season.
Is there anything else special about summer in your nation? Maideans often lay claim to the invention of the hurricane party, with the 1961 "Santa Ana 'Bloc' Party" in an urban neighbourhood of Montenuovo during Hurricane Debbie being cited as ground zero for the Maidas' own Black Power movement. The block party was organized to share resources between several black-majority tower blocks in the neighborhood, despite police curfews and violence, since the resources the Santa Ana barrio received from the city were generally quite poor. Hurricane parties tend to have a more apolitical nature these days, but the province of Axacán commemorates 11 September as both Día de la República (in honour of our 1949 republican constitution) and Día del Bloque in honour of the party's riot against harassment by police officers on that night in 1961.
