ABOUT AQUITANIQUE
Aquitanique is a small island nation of approximately 32,000 people (Aquitans). The island served as a port for merchant ships for centuries, but has largely transitioned to a tourist economy with a heavy emphasis on cottage industry in the past half-century. Aquitanique has plenty of room for new citizens and visitors; it is fit for living, working, and vacationing.
Average temperatures range from 50-90 F, with sunny skies and calm surrounding seas. Weather tends to be mild and pleasant, with the only exceptional events being heavy monsoon-like rains in winter and fall.
LOCAL CUSTOMS AND CULTURE
As the local saying goes, island living is easy living. Expect a slower pace of life, most shops closed in early afternoon, and long lazy Sundays. If you are a food enthusiast, you will be in heaven. Almost nothing is done without a bit of eating or drinking. If you want to have a discussion with someone, it will likely be over a cup of espresso, or beer and wine over plates of tapas.
The national language is Basque, though Spanish, French, Portuguese, Greek, and local dialects are also spoken. Simple English is widely understood, especially in tourist areas, and it is not necessary to be fluent in the other national languages to survive as a tourist or short-term resident.
The island is very safe, with almost zero major crime issues. Minor crimes, such as pickpocketing and petty theft, are more common but still well under control. Any issues of crime or safety may be reported to the local Ertzaintza station.
WHY OPEN A CONSULATE?
In short, a consulate will bring your nation and Aquitanique closer together. Having a diplomatic representative or ambassador on the island makes communication and negotiation much easier, with less chance of important items being lost in translation.
If many citizens of your nation live, work, or vacation on the island, having important diplomatic resources close at hand will make their time here much easier. Replacing passports, issuing or extending visas, even providing a safe haven for lost citizens may be some of the reasons your nation would consider opening a consulate here.
