Disasterous events in YN

Postby Karazicu » Sat Mar 19, 2022 10:59 am

This thread is about the tragedies and disasters that have affected your nation in a very negative way. This can involve natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina or the Tohoku earthquake, or other events like the invasion of Ukraine, 9/11 in the USA, the Holocaust, and 7-1 for Brazil. What are some of these such events that have happened in your nation?

Note: You don't have to use this format, you may use it as an outline for your response. But if you want to respond in this format, go ahead.

What is this event known as? The 2009 Tamaki Earthquake
When did this happen? November 16th, 2009
What happened in this event? At 1:17pm magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Tamaki, the largest city (and de facto capital) of Tangatarehua
Where did this happen? Tamaki
Why did it happen? Because most of Tangatarehua sits along a major faultline, including its largest city
Who was responsible for this event? Ruaomoko, the god of earthquakes and volcanoes. Or, possibly, it was a random event.
How did the people react to this event? It caused significant shock nationwide and led to a nationwide state of emergency for a few days. Tamaki itself was in a state of emergency for over a month. Most notably it damaged the Tamaki Whangapiriti (Tamaki Harbour Bridge) which caused traffic chaos and disrupted transport, forcing goods and people to rely on ferries while road and rail links were repaired.
What was the government's reaction to this? To ensure order and begin rapidly repairing damage while tending to the dead and injured as quickly as possible
How many people lost their lives this day, if any? The final death toll stood at 1,539.
How does this event impact your nation to this day? The nation usually remembers November 16th, especially in Tamaki while laws were drafted that regulated the building industry to ensure that future buildings were strictly earthquake proof.

What is this event known as? - 1861 Vernon Hills massacre
When did this happen? - June 22, 1861
What happened in this event? - After taking the capital city of the German Coasts days ago, the Confederate occupiers massacred every Black government official they could find, as they believed Black people shouldn't vote or hold government office. They also massacred all Black soldiers regardless if they surrendered. They enslaved any other Black man they found, and raped Black women and girls.
Where did this happen?[b] - Vernon Hills, the capital city
[b]Why did it happen?
- The Confederate occupiers believed the Black race were inferior to them. They believed they should hold no power or their own sovereign state.
Who was responsible for this event?[b] - The Confederate States of America
[b]How did the people react to this event?
- The people reacted with outrage and formed several small rebel units in the swamps of Louisiana. Civilians protested in the streets and violently harassed and fought with Confederate soldiers.
What was the government's reaction to this? - It was used as a rallying cry by the German Coasts rebel corps for the duration of the American Civil War. It was seen negatively, and was often used in propaganda during the time.
[b]How many people lost their lives this day, if any?[b] - Before the massacre, there were roughly 15,000 people living within city limits. After the massacre, only 2,000 remaining. This was mainly due in part because the Confederate occupiers not only used their rifles, but leveled entire buildings with their cannons, which also caused fires. Today, the survivors are often called "The Lost 2,000" as they fled the city and never came back.
[b]How does this event impact your nation to this day?[b] - It is seen as one of the most terrible and tragic events in German Coasts' history. It is taught in history classrooms across the nation. In 1961, in Vernon Hills, President Michael Kennedy dedicated two memorials to the event on its 100th anniversary. One memorial showed a Confederate soldier stabbing a Black woman with his bayonet, dedicating that memorial tot hose who lost their lives in the massacre. The other memorial showed a couple standing together, looking in the distance, standing atop of a Confederate flag, dedicating this one to The Lost 2,000. Recently, in 2000, a new memorial was dedicated in Vernon Hills showing a group of armed men together raising German Coasts' flag, dedicating this one to the rebel armies who fought against the Confederate occupiers.

The Day of Peace is held every year on June 22 as a remembrance to the massacre and those who died in it. In 1866, laws were passed to ensure the government could not became tyrannical so that another massacre couldn't take place. The government also began paying out, gradually, compensation to victims of the massacre.

What is this event known as? Black Sunday

What happened in this event? Fascist group "Union of Saviours of the Country" made an attempt to overthrow the government in a bloody coup d'etat.
Where did this happen? Mostly in capital, Grodno, but some outbreaks were seen in other cities.
Why did it happen? "Union" believed that Waisnorian government was controlled by Masons and Illuminati and believed that they were free from their influence.
Who was responsible for this event? Usually leader of the "Union", Sergey Kondratenko, is said to be responsible for this event.
How did the people react to this event? At the day of uprising people of Grodno protested and fought them, preventing to advance further.
What was the government's reaction to this? Some army regiments were deployed in Grodno and some clashes were fought, with "Union" being defeated the next day.
How many people lost their lives this day, if any? 174 people were killed on Black Sunday.
How does this event impact your nation to this day? Today June 26th is an official mourning day with a monument being erected in Grodno in memory of killed people.
This also served as a nadir of "Riot 00's", which from this point onward was slowly reaching it's end in 2010.
Also, this event killed any popularity of radical forces, be it far-right or far-left, which is why centrist politics became more popular in Waisnor.

What is this event known as? The Great Northwestern Twister
When did this happen? Tuesday, June 6th 1978 (Between 1:30am & 2:17am)
What happened in this event? A large tornado, the largest ever recorded in Pulsroth at 1.77 kilometres in width and rated F4 on the Fujita Scale, mostly destroyed the twin cities of Winthrop and Llanybydder, before narrowly avoiding the central business district of Woodleigh, the largest city in the area.
Where did this happen? Along the border between the Northwest and Central West regions, but especially in the cities of Winthrop and Llanybydder.
Why did it happen? The local geography of the Pulsrothi Inner Plains makes tornadoes relatively common in May and June.
Who was responsible for this event? Some believe it was an act of God, although the official reason was because of colliding air masses in the affected area.
How did the people react to this event? Many around the country reacted with genuine shock, because while small tornadoes are common in this part of Pulsroth, there had never been a tornado like this at any point in the country's modern history.
What was the government's reaction to this? A state of emergency was quickly declared in Meredith and Lanchester prefectures (the two most severely affected prefectures), and train lines from Woodleigh to the affected towns were disabled for the following week.
How many people lost their lives this day, if any? 54 were killed directly by the disaster, while 3 further deaths occurred in the following days in local hospitals, bringing the death toll to 57.
How does this event impact your nation to this day? The Great Northwestern Twister was the catalyst for the now widespread usage of tornado shelters in the Central West region, such shelters being rare at the time of the disaster.

When did this happen? 22 May 1966 - 9 November 1966
What happened in this event? The Eurasian National Government, under President Kaloyan Todorov, declared martial law in many of the largest cities in Eurasia, leading to the imprisonment and killings of over 22,000 Eurasians, as well as multiple leftist political parties in Eurasia banned until 1978.
Where did this happen? Across Eurasia, though it was concentrated in cities such as Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Kyiv, Warszawa, Berlin, Minsk, Volgograd, Shenyang, Changchun, and Ha'erbin.
Why did it happen? The martial law was declared in response to protests against the 1965 Presidential Election that re-elected K. Todorov.
Who was responsible for this event? President Kaloyan Todorov
How did the people react to this event? Eurasians continued to protest Todorov's presidency until 1969-1970, as Todorov lost the Unionist Party's presidential candidacy.
What was the government's reaction to this? In 1971 the Eurasian Supreme Court forbid Todorov from running for any national government office ever again.
How many people lost their lives this day, if any? 18,414 during the period of martial law. A further 1,900-2,100 are assumed to have died under Todorov's presidency after the Blood Summer.

What is this event known as? The Adaro Revolt
When did this happen? 1912-1918
What happened in his event? Some Adaro natives revolted and began killing non-natives as well as other natives which they considered “traitors”. Eventually, the Adaro community - once numbering in the thousands - lost more than 90% of its population - and Hatsavana had to be repeopled by Jewish refugees who were themselves fleeing from persecution and intolerance.
Where did this happen?[b] On the main island of Hatsavana, which lies to the South of the rest of Safiloa.
[b]Why did it happen?
A local charismatic Shaman-chief, by the name of Taongina, began professing that Sokhainean culture was imposed on them and that fish and birds should be eaten and that the institution of marriage should be reintroduced. Sokhainean authorities responding to rape and forced enslavement charges tried to apprehend Taongina, who then started a revolt and began slaughtering all non-natives and some natives on Hatsavana.
Who was responsible for this event?[b] Taongina is widely considered to be the main culprit, however there has been an increase in inter-ethnic issues and distrust recently and some natives still see Taongina as a hero. Much of this is also connected to numerous conspiracy theories that Taongina was either framed, escaped, or was a Jewish operative. After the 6 year long brawl, the island was devastated and Jewish refugees were invited to repopulated the island.
[b]How did the people react to this event?
Fear of the central government’s increased powers since then as well as some discontent regarding the ethnic replacing of the Adaro with non-native Jewish people is still very ever-present.
What was the government's reaction to this? After the revolt, the island was depopulated and devastated. Jewish refugees were invited to settle and repopulate the island.
How many people lost their lives this day, if any? 65.000 people in total (incl. 3.000 non-natives), most of whom were Adaro - which is now a culture on the brink of extinction.
How does this event impact your nation to this day? Slow death of Adaro culture, introduction of the Jewish Peshatic Pinonim in Safiloa and increased native fear against the settler communities, especially the Sokhaineans.

What is this event known as? The Great European Plague
When did this happen? 17th, December, 2016
What happened in this event? A plague of unknown origin struck Europe and later the rest of the world, killing off an estimated 75% of the entire Destynic population. The plague lasted from 2012-2017.
Where did this happen? Worldwide, every country.
Why did it happen? It is unknown where the origin of the plague came from, but many speculate it was accidentally released in a German laboratory, while others believe it to be an evolved form of virus that naturally evolved.
How did the people react to this event? People reacted by enforcing mandatory isolation as this plague was highly contagious. Many people locked themselves indoors for extended periods of time. Dead bodies started piling up in public places and in apartments. Royalty was evacuated to underground safe zones, and humanitarian aid volunteers delivered food and resources to people while equipped in full hazmat gear. Many people in the deeper country formed their own autonomous shelters that were mostly made up of combined families and close friends where nobody was allowed near. The government started development on a vaccine immediately but casualties were happening too fast for much hope.
What was the government's reaction to this? The government started development on a vaccine immediately but casualties were happening too fast for much hope. The government declared martial law to clear the streets and keep people from leaving their homes. The first fully covered DOCS uniform was developed, which became the variant that evolved to the modern day police model. The government also isolated a volunteer force of 200 genetically selective, healthy individuals who would become the future of the re-population program.
How many people lost their lives this day, if any?
- A rough estimate of 229,000,000 Destynic citizens
- An estimated number of 1,447,600,000 non-Destynic citizens
How does this event impact your nation to this day? After the loss of so many citizens, the re-population program caused the majority of the newly born population to be completely hereditarily Nordic, with almost every citizen being born with the combination of blue or green eyes, pale skin, and platinum blonde hair, traits which are seen as the highest standard of beauty in the modern day culture. Negatively though, a formerly rare form of disease known as trimethylaminuria has been commonly passed down to 10% of the current day population, due to a member of the re-population program carrying strong hints of the gene. Albinism is also quite common, with 5% of the population being affected due to the side effects of the re-population members. The nation was renamed to Destyntine after the ruling Queen of the time, Queen Destyn II made tremendous efforts to strategize the research and funding needed to defeat the plague. The plague has also expanded the nation's land with multiple nations joining borders out of fear that their tech was undeveloped enough to defeat the plague on their own, as this allowed for an agreement between their nation that their people would also be vaccinated and have their own use of the re-population program in case of an emergency.

Where did this happen? In several cities and towns of the Nation.

Who was responsible for this event? 516 terrorists who were supposed to be members of Communist Cells, of which 297 were captured alive.
How did the people react to this event? At first, people got scared of the attacks. Then, got used to the bad news until a major attack was perpetrated, when fear grew again. After the detention of the terrorists there was a general joy, but when investigation refuted the responsibility of CC some people was outraged, but the majority was indifferent, so the Empire didn't worry by its reputation.
What was the government's reaction to this? At first the Goverment felt unable to react. Then, terrorist squads were trained and began to detain terrorists, even by the help of the Ground Army. After the detention of the last terrorists, the Communist Cells union was used as scapegoat.
How many people lost their lives this day, if any? Around 15,000
How does this event impact your nation to this day? Civil rights and freedoms were reduced by the Government to allegedly fight terrorism, but previous levels haven't yet been reached. Private weapons manufacturers do great business with the Government every year, many people are usually afraid of missed bags or tumults, and Communist Cells is still banned.

How many people lost their lives this day, if any? ~18 million in the first year. To this day, that number is 2-3 billion.
How does this event impact your nation to this day? A number of locations within Tsarus are recovering from nuclear fallout, many many areas are still rebuilding, and still many more are mourning the losses of the event, mostly because said event is still occurring even a hundred years later. People are still dying at a rapid rate, destruction is seen everywhere you go, everyone lives in constant fear. Many people opt to live in rural areas to avoid being targeted.
