Investigation into Reichstag attack continues, as threat level raised
German police near the Reichstag, on patrol, seen at 3 o'clock today
BERLIN- The ongoing investigation into the attack on the Reichstag earlier today has continued, as, just under 12 hours after the attack, the building has been closed down and the national threat level has been raised to 'Standby'. A press release, jointly issued by the Imperial State Intelligence Office, Berlin Police, Reichstag Security Department, Berlin State Guard, and the Imperial Army Military Police Force has confirmed many rumours- that all Reichstag sessions for the next week have been cancelled (with more expected to be cancelled), that the Kaiser and senior government officials have had their security detachments raised, and that military police patrols will be expected.
The attack occurred at midday today, when three unidentified men drove up to the Reichstag building and fired at police, with one managing to break in before being detained by police. Rapid response units were called and within fifteen to twenty minutes, the three men had been detained.
It is unclear what the motive behind the attack is, although the top rumour is that the men are Nationalists- members of an illegal group who plot the overthrow of the government. The group was proscribed recently.
The three men now await trial for attempted murder, assault, trespass, terrorism and conspiracy to plot the downfall of a democratic government. More charges (including treason and attempted incitement of rebellion) will be laid before them later on. The Provincial Court of Berlin will decide the date of the trial.
Meanwhile, the investigation, by many different departments and agencies, is ongoing. The Ministry of Imperial Affairs (the interior ministry) will take charge of the operation.
