History

On 27 June 2022, a Chinese guided missile destroyer and a Russian frigate on patrol in the Sea of Japan sunk an American destroyer named Mason. The unprovoked attack was condemned by the United States, Japan, South Korea, and other Western nations, but no significant tensions came out of it thanks to incumbent President Daniel Anderson (D)'s supportive stance towards American pacifism. Four days later, however, a South Korean fleet composed of three destroyers and two offshore patrol vessels engaged a Chinese warship, sinking it after the Chinese crew had raised a flag of surrender.

Tensions rose on 3 July when Japan deployed warships into the Yellow Sea and the Sea of Japan, swiftly followed by Taiwanese and British warships. Russia reacted perhaps prematurely when it fired three missiles into the Sea of Japan, accidentally sinking a 30-man fishing vessel from South Korea. While American President Anderson worked behind the scenes to quell the tension, Chinese Premier Zhao Liaoping deployed People's Liberation Army marines into North Korea, provoking the South Koreans to fortify the DMZ.

On 8 July, four days after American independence day, the People's Republic of China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) declared war on South Korea, which was swiftly followed with declarations of war from Japan, Australia, and the United Kingdom. The United States stalled but, after the President's veto on a passed Congressional resolution to bring the US into the war was vetoed by Congress, declared war on 15 July. The Third World War officially started with the entry of the Philippines, France, Germany, Italy and Canada into the conflict on the South Korean side and Russia and Vietnam on the Chinese side.

A nuclear exchange then occurred between China and the United States, which ended with the devastation of California and the American West Coast and the elimination of China's nuclear launch capabilities through directed espionage attacks. Russia did not fire its warheads for fear of receiving the same espionage attack from the States.

-

After three grueling years of conventional war on the air, land and sea, Beijing fell to American and British troops on 7 August 2025 with over 3.1 million NATO troops on Chinese soil. Japan and South Korea had suffered beatings, after Chinese landings near Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, and Seoul and Incheon were incurred and eventually crushed by American forces. On 12 August 2025, with NATO forces on the doorstep of Moscow and the city of Volgograd in Turkish and Greek hands, the Russian Federation unconditionally surrendered, ending the Third World War.

The war had devastated American and British morale, with the destruction and the eventual secession of California, Oregon and Washington from the United States of America. The US economy had tumbled down to a meager 18.5 trillion dollars, with American loans barely keeping Britain afloat. As the war came to a close and the troops came filing home, President Daniel Anderson of the United States and Prime Minister Roger Clifford of the United Kingdom held a meeting in Ottawa with their Canadian, Danish, Icelandic and Norwegian counterparts to discuss something which would change global geopolitics forever.

-

After five months of negotiations, the United States of America and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland united to form the United States of the North Atlantic. The Republic of Ireland, the Kingdom of Denmark, and the Kingdom of Norway subsequently ascended into the union, choosing the American-led Union over the French and German-led European Confederation of States, formed a month earlier. Canada and Iceland would enter the Union as well as resource scarcity began taking a toll on their economies, while America prospered and recovered from the war.

-

The United States of the North Atlantic was renamed into the Commonwealth of New Provenance upon the ascension of Cuba, Greater Dominica and Puerto Rico into the union on 7 July 2029.

-

On 31 January 2040, the Commonwealth was formally renamed to the Commonwealth of Atlantic States through public referendum.

Government

The Federal Government of the Commonwealth of Atlantic States greatly resembles that of the former United States of America, but with a few hints of Westminster-style parliamentarism here and there. The federal government is divided into three branches, namely the executive, legislative, and judicial. The executive branch is led by the President and is composed of the Cabinet. The legislative branch is led by the Speaker of the House of Representatives and is composed of the Congress, which is divided into the Senate (upper house) and the House of Representatives (lower house). Lastly, the judicial branch is led by the Chief Justice and is composed of the Supreme Court of the Commonwealth, and all other subordinating judicial courts and bodies.

The Carter Administration

The Carter Administration is the federal government currently in charge of the Commonwealth, elected during the 2036 presidential elections and serving to this day.

Major Political Parties

Democratic Party of the Commonwealth

Image
Led by Robert J. Carter, President of the Commonwealth (2036-)

The Democratic Party of the Commonwealth of Atlantic States is the governing political party of the Commonwealth, whose roots can be traced directly back to the Democratic Party of the 2020s. This 'Commonwealth Democratic Party', as it is called to distinguish it from the American Democratic Party, thrives on the values of democracy, self-determination, unity, solidarity, the 'People Before Profit' policy, and other center left policies such as higher minimum wages and increased workers rights and limitations on condition during work.

The party is currently led by Robert James Carter, the incumbent President of the Commonwealth of Atlantic States.

Conservative Party CAS

Image
Led by William Forrester, Senate Leader of the Opposition (2038-)

The Conservative Party CAS (Commonwealth of Atlantic States) is the leading opposition party of the Commonwealth, established in 2027 following the merger of the Conservative Party of the UK and the Republican Party of the United States. The party was established following the formation of the United States of North America and has survived to this day, becoming the leading conservative party in the country. It thrives on pro-business, pro-capitalism, pro-intervention policies, and quietly supports profit over policies such as raising the minimum wage and increasing workers rights, since the party is dominated by businessmen and entrepreneurs.

The party is currently led by William Forrester, the presidential runner up in the 2036 elections and the incumbent Senate Leader of the Opposition since 2038.

Commonwealth Liberal Party

Image
Led by Mary Jane Lerroux, Liberal Senator (2028-)

The Commonwealth Liberal Party, or the Liberal Party, is the third largest party and the second largest opposition party of the Commonwealth, tracing its roots directly to the UK Liberal Party of the 20th and early 21st centuries. The Commonwealth Liberal Party pursues a fiscally progressive and socially progressive agenda, and supports reduction of gun restrictions and the creation of a universal basic income system for the Commonwealth. Hence, thanks to an alignment of policies, the Liberals usually vote with the Democratic Party.

The party is currently led by Mary Jane "MJ" Lerroux, a Liberal Senator who has been serving since 2028.

Forward Acela Party

Image
Led by James "Jim" Bloomberg, businessman and Acela Senator

The Forward Acela Party, or the Acela Party, is the smallest political party with seats in the Commonwealth Congress. Established in 2029 as a centrist, pro-business, anti-intervention party by Conservative Party defectors, the Acela Party has evolved to become a 'haven for all', catering to all sorts of policies from the left and right, from centrists and radicals, boosting its popularity significantly as a 'one vote for all' party. It pursues a fiscally progressive and socially progressive agenda, and hence also usually votes with the Democratic Party, similarly to the Liberals.

A key difference is the Acela Party is highly pro-business, similarly to the Conservatives, hence why they vote with the Conservatives on proposals that affect businesses and privately-run organizations and groups. Acela's name originated from the early 21st century railway vehicle provider Amtrack's Acela train, and was used as the party's name since the party's co-founder was a former Board member at Amtrak.

The party is currently led by James "Jim" Bloomberg, a prosperous businessman, philanthropist, and Acela Senator.
