The reason behind such a reliance on nuclear power despite possessing abundance of fossil fuels is a direct result of the Conklin Scheme, devised by Minister of Energy Ronald Conklin in 1999 as a solution to the global surge in oil prices. It was decided that Countesia would save itself from any future fuel shortages by phasing out all but a handful of its coal and oil plants and replacing them with nuclear reactors, as well as financing a number of hydroelectric projects as a supplementary power source. Solar power and wind power are relatively new players in the Countesian energy business, as it is only within the last five years that they became economically feasible.
