With congestion in Kalaspia-Shimarata at an all-time high, tolls are to be introduced on new roads being constructed.
"This is a great idea and will help to reduce the carbon footprint and make people think about how they commute," said a Yaromir resident, who asked not to be named. "With the roads either clogged with congestion or requiring a fee, more people will walk or take public transport, reducing the stress on the environment."

"I'm getting too old for this. It's time for someone new to bring across a youthful image of Grandais to the people of the world." he said today.
Elections for a new State Spokesperson will begin in two months, giving candidates time to prepare material and solidify their positions following the sudden decision.
While others agree with his persuations, there are some who fear that increasingly militant right-wing minorities will bring about an undesirable effect. One internet commenter noted: "Were it not for the death of Radimir Mitya during the Necrosis Crisis, I fear that his supporters would have continued to stir up unwelcome right-wing sentiments in our cities. In Chernogolovka, the deluge has caused the overflow of the city dam, resulting in waist-deep levels of water across the city and surrounding areas. ELECTION PRELIMINARIES

Following the sudden resignation of Yegor Varnava from the position of State Spokesperson last month, Grandais has been left without a figurehead. This will be amended by the conclusion of national elections this week. Each state soviet has elected one potential national representative following a month of state elections to decide each candidate. While previously the position of State Spokesperson has held little legislative authority, concerns that elections have become a popularity contest between the states have led to rumours that the new State Spokesperson would be granted increased political power, in line with the leaders of many other democratic governments.

Nizhny Oblast - Petros Odolesk
In line with Nizhny oblast's position as the primary producer of petroleum products and byproducts, Petros has vowed to increase funding to mining operations and reduce pollution tax on the plastics and petroleum industries.
"While we, the people of Grandais, have worked hard to decrease our carbon footprint and help the environment, the truth is that developing nations simply cannot cope with the pressure to reduce environmental impact while working hard to develop their economy and place on the world stage. We can provide resources and jobs for these nations who require petroleum products and fossil fuels to function," he said on Monday. Petros' ultimatum did not come without criticism however, and his objectives have been lambasted as 'reckless' and 'counterproductive'.

Kemerovo Oblast - Anatoliy Yozhikov
Anatoliy has pushed for harsher immigration laws and punishments for illegal immigrants, increased border control and defence across the forested parts of the border, following concerns that would-be immigrants or hapless tourists would be lost in the wilderness or killed by animals. He also claims that the national borders in their current state are "wide open for enemy combatants to walk straight in and assail our good people." While his campaign so far has been successful, it has been marred by criticism and labels of overt militarism and nationalism.

Zavod Oblast - Vladlem Yaroslavich Ibragimov
Vladlem somehow managed to win the majority vote with his quiet campaign of stability. He claims that "the State Spokesperson should be chosen simply on their skills as a speaker; granting them any extra political power would be hazardous to the power of the people and soviets as should be the deciders in a socialist state." Vladlem vows to keep Grandais on its current track of pacifism and stability and veto any additional powers granted to the post should he be given it, but it remains to be seen whether this position will be enough to win him national leadership.

Oktyabrsky Oblast - Okropir Rakhaz
Okropir Rakhaz was the surprise elected candidate of Oktyabrsky oblast, making him the first Grandian of Khazmati descent to be selected as the spokesperon of a soviet in the nation's long history. He has supported increased trade and diplomacy between Grandais and Khazmat to ease strained relations between the two states, and has also pushed for relaxation of immigration laws. While he has the support of his oblast, detractors have labelled his campaign as 'hopeless' amid worries that Khazmati dictatorship would not take kindly to increased Grandian interests.

Kakheti Oblast - Yuri Pavlovich Kosaryov
Yuri won by a landslide in Kakheti oblast, supporting markedly increased border security, military funding, isolationism, and a return to aggressive military action. He claims that Grandais' current pacifist position "allows weaker and troublesome nations to walk all over us as we sit with our fingers in our ears and ignore threats to the nation and the world", and posits a more aggressive stance like that under the leadership of controversial former Marshal of the Red Army, Radimir Mitya. Nationwide campaigns from activist groups to discredit his position of 'dangerous far-Right nationalist rhetoric' have led to controversy.

Sakha Oblast - Artyom Banin
Artyom has campaigned for an overhaul of the economy in Grandais, citing that the current system, confusing to outsiders, and distrust of capitalism has led to a difficulty in attracting foreign enterprise. He says that "if Grandais is to be taken seriously as an economic power, it needs to adapt to a modern economic system founded on trade and business, not blind trust and goodwill."

Federal elections begin next week.

Heads up: news around the workplace is that those 26 people still reported missing in the Necrosis Crisis turned up in pieces sealed up in a bag underneath a bridge in Chernogolovka. Now I can't say for sure because of my NDA and, well, it wouldn't do well for my popularity if I turned up dead, but I think some sick bastard at State Security experimented on them and probably tried to weaponise the disease. We put the bodies in quarantine but results should be in shortly.

TSS Winterwind scuttled at sea

The Genevan cruise ship TSS Winterwind was destroyed at sea with over a thousand passengers on board, of which five are believed to be Grandian. Boris and Nadya Radavoi, their two children, and a family friend, Ilyana Kovich, were holidaying in Geneva at the time and are presumed lost at sea.The family of the victims has called for justice for their family and the other passengers. International rescue groups are already on their way to the scene.

Operation 'Enclosure' to launch

State Spokesperson Anatoliy Yozhikov has announced a joint project with the Red Army. Titled 'Operation Enclosure', the project is set to identify possible weakpoints in the nation's security network and reinforce national borders.

T-96 to enter service

After a troubled history, the T-96 tanks are to enter service this November. Replacing the T-85, the new vehicles have performed amicably in combat tests. The first combat-ready vehicles will be seen in the Revolution Day parade this year. The T-96 is of no relation to the T-95 tanks purchased from Osea in 2009.

Christians publicly executed in Estoica

Over one hundred Christians were publicly crucified in the main square of New London today in a bloody and shameful display of power against the Christian minority in Estoica. There are confirmed reports from international diplomats that condemnation of the display has been met with personal insults and threats from Estocian officials.

"I need not express my opinion on these executions, as I am sure my revulsion is shared by all citizens of the free world," the State Spokesperson tweeted this afternoon.
Foreign Affairs Minister Alyona Zaytsev has expressed concern towards the unprofessional nature of the Estoican representatives.
"It is disappointing that the fanaticism taught by radical Estoism has spread far enough into the system that even the diplomats are expressing it," she said. "It does not bode well for any sort of negotiation or peaceful solution to the situation."

New legislation set to ban online paywalls

Amendments to online content laws could be set to ban the use of paywalls for web articles. "Information should be free," says Oleg Ulyanin of the Serov soviet. "Forcing users to purchase articles or only have access to a certain number of free articles a week is little more than capitalist exploitation. We understand that these publications need to make money, but giving access to some articles to only a select few individuals is preposterous."

Should the amendment pass, it will no longer be legal to keep any journalistic article behind a paywall from a Grandian IP or using a Grandian top-level domain.

Those in opposition say that it would be easy for web hosts to move their paywalled content to another domain and circumnavigate the restrictions.

"All this will do is move successful e-businesses out of Grandais," said one citizen.
