The Communist Manifesto is banned, and anyone caught with it is executed by having their eyes set on fire.

Knowledge is power and Samurai must be well-read and educated.

No books are banned in United Inazuma. Some books have "restricted" status (i.e. erotica and some Nazi/Communist/Radical Leftist literature). "Restricted" books can only be sold in certain licensed areas or read in public libraries. We like to stay informed about our universe and whatever the outlanders are up to.

Books that are published or authored by a cult (e.g. Scientology, Jehovah's Witnesses, the Falun Gong, pretty much any group that is deemed to be a cult by the government.) are banned due to their damaging effects on the vulnerable.

Books that promote hateful ideologies and viewpoints (e.g. Mein Kampf, the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, etc.) are heavily restricted with only history students and academics being able to access them, and with strict screenings to ensure that one doesn't just waltz right in pretending to be a history student or an academic just to get their hands on said books.

Books that promote something that the Constitution says can land one the death penalty are banned.

All other books are legal, but are at the discretion of school districts, localities, religious groups that aren't listed as a cult, non-religious groups, and individuals.

For a bit of history, books that were deemed to support "communism" or "subversive ideas" were banned from 1976 until 1994 when the military junta unbanned said books during the transition to multi-party democracy.

Banned works include:

-Almost all erotic fiction (excluding some where the woman is the dominant) under the Sexist Publications Acts of 1990 and 1995.

- Almost all books of philosophy or theology written before 1960
(Under the Hate Speech Act of 2002, scriptures of recognised religions are exempt but commentaries on them are not, this is used to persecute Jews for reading the Talmud)

- Works vehemently critical of the government (under the sedition laws).

Most religious texts are out of national print and hard to get...and the special higher police is watching out for them. Importing one gets you on the list, but nominally they're not illegal. In 1978 the courts ruled that religiousity was a mild mental illness, that could worsen by influence of pertinent materials, and thus production was halted and library stocks destroyed or taken out of circulation.

No literature is banned as even radical beliefs are protected under freedom of speech and expression. However, those that publish works that are clearly anti LGBT or pro fascist, racism, misogyny, imperialism or hyper-capitalism may be barred from holding public office or careers related to law enforcement, as they may be deemed an opposition to the party. Books are generally given a rating based off their content similar to ratings given to movies and video games. Books with erotic topics are generally given a 16+ rating so only people 16 or older can purchase them or rent them out. Books like 1984 and the Communist Mannifesto are actually quite common in libraries and even high schools.

South Americanastan does not ban any books as it is banned in the free speech provisions of the constitution. However, individual insititutions, such as schools may ban book. This power is not often excersized due to the outrage it often creates due to restriction of speech.

Burgundy Russia bans a lot of oppositional or apparently anti-scientific literature; there are hundreds of titles on the blacklists of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. (Although why am I separating these categories? They are the same thing, lol)

Interestingly, this does not mean that the population is not allowed to know about the existence of this literature and about its content. This means that such literature cannot be distributed "as is", but there are many MIA-approved revisions of these works. Our propagandists love to show the abomination of fascism or, for example, mock the ravings of swindlers and obscurantists.

No books are outright banned, but a very small amount have mild restrictions on their sale that if they were fully unrestricted, it would possibly advocate illegal activity (such as Mein Kampf and Industrial Society and Its Future)

The Communist Manifesto and 1984 are fine, because they just explain the ideology. ISaIF is not because it made someone do a bombing.
