There is not really a "banned book" per se that is legally regulated by any school or government body, however, local obscenity laws and government bodies have been used as a means of indirectly decreasing the production and distribution of certain books, such as the infamous 1985 sex novel Lust of Antonia. The sex novel depicted sadistic erotic roleplay, vividly detailing the sex life of a woman named Antonia Ardisson falling in love with a sexual deviant well-respected physician. The Ibesa provincial government's Ministry of Culture and Media issued a cease and desist letter to the publishing company of the novel, Rolland Literature GLL (group w/ limited liability), claiming the novel to be in violation of several provincial obscenity laws. The publisher agreed to cease distribution in Ibesa province, but this agreement was later retracted. Ultimately, the book is still published by these companies to this day.

Movements to ban certain books are undertaken every year, due to the participatory and active nature of Fratanica's political culture. Public sentiments of fear and disgust, particularly against extremely explicit content, spur these activities. Groups lobby school boards, publishers, and library institutions to prevent the distribution of or remove certain books which may depict extreme violence or sexual activity. Some do comply with or negotiate with public demand, removing books from their curriculum or their shelves. However, there has never been an outright federal book ban instituted since the inception of the Federal Republic.

On the contrary, there are activist groups and non-profit organizations dedicated to the preservation of literature freedom and to the opposition of book bans. Most are local and operate on the basis of a guaranteed "freedom of speech". However, there are also nationwide organizations dedicated to protecting media freedom.

The only Books banned are those related to Pseudoscience (incl Eugenics, Flat Earth etc) and The Ruuirorgke Kinsman Theory (OOC: this universe's version/comes-close-to, etc of National Socialism). We have previously tried to ban books relating to Theosophy, Alternative Medicine and Philosophy of Language but repeat offenders usually end up with them anyhow, so we just fine them now and books are confiscated most of the time.

No books are banned in Ragamuffin-controlled areas: the barely functional government is too busy trying to fight off invaders. The Ragamuffins are known for destroying copies of certain books, especially those authored by prominent anarchist and Marxist thinkers. Those who are found to distribute copies of those books are usually beaten or arrested. Thus, while those books are not officially banned, their ownership is de facto illegal.

Although the Government does not usually impose ban on published materials, there's still some materials being banned.

The most popular cases:

The Communist Manifesto was banned by the Anti-Communism Act of 1923, and the Canvish Communist Party was suppressed. In 1937 the Anti-Communism Act was challenged by the Socialist Labour Party and the SDP, which leads to the famous “Socialists and Sympathizers v. Republic" Case in 1938. The Constitution Court decided on January 11th, 1939 by a vote of 13:2 that the Anti-Communism Act was unconstitutional, therefore abolished.

Patriot's Declaration was banned in 1929 for inciting insurgency against the Republic, the Fascist Party of Canvalland was also banned for their insurgent on November 16th 1929 against Republic in Saint Denis City. In 1940, the Fascists wants to overturn the ban, but the effort "Fascists and Sympathizers v. Republic" (1940) was disapproved by the Constitutional Court on April 19th, 1940 by a vote of 3:12. This ban on the work was lifted in 1978 while the Fascist Ban remains effective.

A Night in George Street was banned in 1962 for its sympathy with the New Stockholm LGBTQ right strike in 1959. Despite the ban, this book remains very popular. In 1969, the ban was lifted by the United Left Bloc government.

A typical day in Mr. Hayden's office was banned in 1998 but soon lifted. This sarcastic work was done by Leonard Hammarskjöld in 1995 which insults NPP Conservatives includes then-Prime Minister Alfred Hayden with a sarcastic manner. The banning was signed by then-PM Hayden himself but overturned by "Hammarskjöld v. Hayden" five weeks later.

Besides the formal banning, there are many unpopular works that are de-facto banned by the market and publishers.

All content is allowed, so long as it is well written and is not plagiarized. Access is restricted, with works that are essentially erotica or of no merit only allowed in the Marches/Metic Realms. Poetry is perhaps the only exception to this.

Religious texts are allowed, regardless of faith. It is not what the text says as how it is interpreted.

Every book by Marquis De Sade
(eroticisation of rape, torture etcetera)

The Lustful Turk
(Insult to Islam, racist attitudes and eroticisation of rape)

In addition, only ulama (Islamic scholars) or university students of relevant disciplines are permitted to read works which insult Islam and only history students or military cadets can read Mein Kampf
(We need some people reading it to combat the Nazi threat)

Has HWF banned books?

Postby HappyWorldForever » Fri Sep 24, 2021 12:56 pm

Hahaha you guy's are still reading those things? The star people hooked us up with everything on the network including old books! But we don't really read the same way anymore, we download material and understand it. We don't ban anything entertainment related as far as I'm aware. Pretty soon I won't need my hands to share anything remotely, I will one day send you my thoughts and feelings I will not need to type anything at all. If a book was banned I could perhaps send you an emotional synopsis of it, or maybe even my memory of the book. I am sure that one day HappyWorldForever will utilize this technology against its people but not currently under the close watch of the Star people although it would have been expected to be utilized that way in the past.

Back in decades, before 1982, under the rule of Enthorean Junta, corporations and church following books were banned:

-Religious texts of all religions other that Edgarism (A rather harsh branch of christianity). Even Catholic or Orthodox.
-Anarchist cookbook and scuh.
-Anything considered obscene or inappropriate.
-Books of Pre-regime writers.
-Leftist literature. Libertarian too. Anything, that wasn't in line with policies.
-Basically, anything, that wasn't approved by the state.

But after the successful revolution, when Edgar was deposed and killed, we took that constitution and read it. It was full of fancy latin words, but it was all about opression and tyranny. So we made lots of joints from it's pages. And... some pages were used for other purposes by some dude, who munched something bad. Afterwards, we banded together and wrote a new constitution for an enturely new country!

Currently, no books are banned on our turf! Anything goes, dudes! Read and study them all ya' want!

There are no blanket bans of books in the nation, however, Public Schools up to Twelfth Grade are forbidden from having the following in their libraries.

Books that are explicitly pornographic in nature (Fifty Shades, Kama Sutra, several recent American Publications from the Kinseyan and Post-Kinseyan approach to sexual education, etc.)

Books that espouse a racial sense of superiority or inferiority without being of value in teaching historical cases of racism (this bans most racial material, but leaves certain texts, like Mein Kampf, intact to be presented for their historical value and critique/educational opposition of Nazism and Racism.

Books that act as manuals for the manufacture of destructive devices (Anarchist cookbook).

Books that simultaneously advocate for and present clear tactics for the socialist overthrow of civilization (ie the works of Antonio Gramsci and similar works)
OOC- Any other states presenting themselves as representing all or part of the nation of Tropico from the series of City Builders are not operated by me nor are they canon to Estado de Tropico's lore. The existence of such states as have been founded on or after the 18th of October 2021, seemingly in response to my activity, have done so without my consent, but are permitted to do so by virtue of Tropico as a general country not being the unique and original intellectual property of any NS player. Nonetheless, their existence, being conflicting with my own, should be interpreted as taking place in a separate universe, as Nation States is multiversal, and no claims of accomplishing or attempting secession or other seizure of power from or by Estado de Tropico are true.

Mein Kampf is an obvious no-no, but just about everything else is OK, unless it in-and-of-itself hosts illegal content.
(IE The Communist Manifesto or The Bell Curve are OK, but a book containing pictures of naked kids wouldn’t be, because that’s separately illegal.)

Any book which's uncritical consumption would lead to "undesirable extremisms (such as racism and white supremacy, homophobia, transphobia, sexisms, classisms etc.pp.)" are to be "Indexed".

Any indexed book is to be seized and unauthorized production and import to be halted. Seized books are to be archived, interned or professionally destroyed and recycled if not usable for the two former purposes. Museums and other educational institutions may request antiques or orginials for display. Archived books are also to be digitalized and reprinted under state supervision if there is a shortage of interned books for replacement of archived examples.
Any archived book can be borrowed or accessed digitally for academic purposes.

Indexed books include:
  • Mein Kampf. Hitler, Adolf.
  • "Zweites Buch". Hitler, Adolf
  • The Turner Diaries. Pierce, William L.
  • Geschlecht und Charakter. Weiniger, Otto.
  • Sind Weiber Menschen? [...]. Funke, Max.
