I recently made a map with subdivisions of my nation and some cities in them without posting it but then when I searched the names I had chosen (which were all randomly generated from a site) while almost none of them existed as a current nation, some existed as nations that have ceased to exist and I was wondering if I could keep these names or if I should change them since they belong to others.
You're good to go regardless of any other nations/players on the site. If a nation previously existed using that name, then the most that means is that you can't found that nation (for awhile, anyway). It has no bearing on what you name your cities or subdivisions.
