2030 American Presidential Election [IC] [CLOSED]

(OOC: Note that no, this is not for a real-life election. This is a strictly IC election to determine the President of this nation, Multi Party America.)

The United States of America is holding its second ever election after the Democratic Revolution of 2025, which ended the two-party system in the US and installed proportional representation. Bernie Sanders was elected in that election with 55% of the vote, however he will not be running for re-election due to his age. This means that all candidates will be relative newcomers to Presidential politics, and a total of 10 candidates have officially announced that they will be participating in the election. Along with determining the President and Vice President, voters will also vote upon two referendums: change the Senatorial election system from MMP to State-wide Proportional Representation, and to decrease the number of states from 52 to 15. A map for the hypothetical new states has been made by the Sanders administration, and voters will either approve of this map or not. A two-round system will be used, meaning that if a candidate doesn't not receive 50%+1 vote, the top two candidates will go on to a second round. The date for the election is set for May 20th, 2030, and June 5th in the case of a second round.

Your countries may endorse candidates and ask them questions. A debate will be held on the 14th.

Put in place broad anti-discrimination laws for minorities, along with increased rights to abortion and same-sex relationships. Create state-owned companies to regulate and produce renewable energy. Notes: Leading figure of the 2025 Democratic Revolution that saw the downfall of the FPTP and Electoral College systems, recognized for being one of the politicians who began it. Also responsible for occupying the White House during the revolution. Home State is New York. Received endorsement from Outgoing President Bernie Sanders.
Platform: Keep all industries that were nationalized during the Sanders administration (healthcare, public transit, etc.), along with fiercely regulating private companies, such as instituting workplace democracy, mandatory trade unions and co-operatives. Establish a broadly encompassing anti-discrimination laws for ethnic and sexual minorities. Institute a Green New Deal that will make the United States carbon neutral by 2040. Supports both amendments.

Notes: Former First Lady from 2008-2016, African-American rights activist. Left Democratic Party in 2026 to help form AAMP. Home state is Illinois.
Platform: Regulate certain industries but keep markets free. Re-institute affirmative action and massively increase anti-racism legislation to protect African Americans, along with tackling racism in the police force. Invest in renewable energy and phase out fossil fuels by 2050. Supports Senate but not State amendment.

Notes: Elected as Senator from Nevada from 2016-2024. Left position in 2026 to help establish LAIMP. Renowned Latin American rights activist, one of the original politicians to help abolish ICE. Home state is Nevada.
Platform: Regulate the economy to ensure fairness and proper representation of minorities, re-institute affirmative action for minorities. Establish anti-discrimination laws for immigrants and minorities, require communities with 25% or more of their population being Spanish speaking to make road signs in Spanish, establish greater language rights for minorities. Increase immigration to the country and allow asylum for people fleeing conflict. Invest in renewable energy. Supports both amendments.

Notes: Senator from Massachusetts from 2012-2030, left position to run for President. Helped Democratic Party define its platform after mass defections, uniting the party. Home state is Massachusetts.
Platform: Increase regulations on economy and maintain current number of nationalized businesses. Increase anti-discrimination legislation. Invest in renewable energy and implement a Green New Deal. Supports both amendments.

Notes: Ran unsuccessfully for mayor of New York City in 2021, formed New Way-New Democrats in 2027 after Democratic Revolution, as a splinter from the Democratic Party. Home state is New York.
Platform: Increase incentives for companies to invest in technology, supports free markets and entrepreneur's rights. Supports increasing civil liberties such as drug ownership, same-sex marriage, abortion etc. Supports incentives for companies to become green. Supports Senate amendment but not state.

Notes: Former Governor of Massachusetts from 1991-1997, unsuccessfully ran for Republican candidate in 2020 election. Noted opponent to 2025 Democratic Revolution. Helped Republican Party restructure after the revolution and aided in the expelling of Trumpists from the party. Home state is New York.
Platform: Supports re-regulating much of the economy and returning all businesses that were nationalized by Sanders to private companies, including healthcare. Supports the re-instatement of the war on drugs, including marijuana, along with restricting abortion. Supports same-sex marriage however. Does not support green incentives and is staunchly against the state sponsoring renewable energy. Is against both amendments.

Notes: Former senator from Pennsylvania from 1995-2007. Noted opponent to the 2025 Democratic Revolution, in which he even attempted start a counter-coup against the White House Occupiers, which ultimately failed. Was one of the founding members of the Christian Democratic Party. Home state is Virginia.
Platform: Supports massively de-regulating the economy and privatizing all industries nationalized by Bernie Sanders. Supports scaling back anti-hate speech legislation, along with the re-instatement of the War on Drugs, criminalizing abortion in all forms, criminalizing same-sex relationships and incorporating religion into primary and secondary schooling. Does not support protecting the environment. Is against both amendments.

Notes: Former Governor of New Mexico from 1995-2003, and unsuccessfully ran for President in both 2012 and 2016. Re-entered politics after the 2025 Democratic Revolution and rejoined the Libertarian Party, helping reshape it to its modern form. Home state is New Mexico.
Platform: Supports mass-scale de-regulation of the economy, including shrinking the governments budget and privatizing every single state owned company. Also supports drug liberalization, abortion, same-sex marriage etc. Supports some economic incentives for companies to help the environment, but mostly believes they should do it on their own. Is for the Senate amendment but against the State amendment.

Notes: Former US President from 2016-2020, was responsible for attempting to commit a coup after the 2020 election, though this failed. He left the Republican Party in 2022 to form his own party called the Patriot Party, and after the 2025 Democratic Revolution (of which he was a staunch opponent of) he merged the party with the Constitution Party to create the Constitution-Patriot Party. Home state is Florida.
Platform: Supports economic re-regulation and cuts to taxes and welfare. Is very against anti-hate speech laws and is also a staunch opponent to immigration and supports the return of ICE. Is very against environmental protection and denies the existence of climate change. Is against both amendments.

Based on these platforms I'd probably vote for Yang or Johnson, but based on real-life platforms I'd vote for Weld.

OOC: It is mostly intentional. A large revolution occurred in 2025 that democratized much of the US's institutions, and saw the factions of the Dems and Republicans leave to either join or form other parties. As such, their platforms were streamlined, and so were their candidates. As such, I modelled the candidates platforms of off their parties moreso then their individual beliefs.

Gloria: "I support lax immigrations laws, however I support trading only with fellow socialist countries and with heavy restrictions on any trade that is done."

Alexandria: "We need more immigration and more immigrant's rights, and sustainable, fair trade with nations that are likeminded in our fight to preserve the environment and worker's rights."

Michelle: "I think we need to allow immigration to a certain extent, but make sure they properly assimilate into our country. We should adopt a free trade policy with nations that uphold minority rights."

Catherine: "We need more immigrants and we need to change our culture to be more accepting of them. We should grant asylum to anyone fleeing armed conflict, and help them either get established into our country or help them move back once their homes are more stable. We should uphold a policy of free trade with nations that do not commit human rights abuses."

Elizabeth: "We should be more accepting to immigrants and treat them as if they are regular citizens, and we should increase the immigration quota from 50,000 to 100,000. We should have some form of free trade that protects the environment and does not exploit people."

Andrew: "We should have more immigrants come into our country, and allow them to apply for citizenship right away. This will have a good affect on our economy. We should adopt a policy of free trade."

Bill: "There should be a cap on immigration, 30,000 people, but we should allow anyone fleeing conflict to come here and get citizenship. We should also adopt a policy of free trade."

Rick: "We should be tougher on immigration. A cap of 10,000 immigrants per year, and make sure the fully assimilate into our culture and pass a citizenship test. We should have limited trade with willing nations."

Gary: "We should be much more lax on immigration. No immigrant cap, and let all people fleeing armed conflict be able to claim asylum here. We should have absolute free trade to increase our economy."

Donald: "We need to be very, very tough on immigration. Prohibit immigrants from coming here en masse, re-establish ICE, make them quickly assimilate into America and establish an immigrant cap of only 5,000 people per year. We should have little trade and stop trading with nations that don't have our best interests in mind."

Gloria: "We should pursue a policy of international solidarity with our fellow socialist and communist brethren, and make ourselves the leading socialist voice in the world stage."

Alexandria: "I believe that America should really focus on allying ourselves with countries that focus on protecting the environment, worker's rights, human rights etc., and make ourselves the leading voice in the fight against climate change and oppression."

Michelle: "We should pursue a better understanding and friendship between our African ancestors, and make ourselves world renowned for our Black rights."

Catherine: "We should integrate more with Latin America, such as increasing relations with our friends in the Caribbean, Central and South America. Along with this, we should focus on disarming and ending wars worldwide to achieve global peace.

Elizabeth: "We need to focus on ending foreign wars with peacekeeping missions, and we need our voice to support progressive causes worldwide."

Andrew: "We should really focus on allying ourselves with countries that have embraced the technology industry and have good infrastructure for entrepreneurs.

Bill: "We should focus on freeing countries from oppressive regimes with occupation, and to introduce them to democratic values. Our voice in the world should be our support of the free market and capitalism."

Rick: "We should invade foreign countries if they become too authoritarian, and we should be a voice of christianity and morality worldwide."

Gary: "We should be a global beacon for democracy and liberty on the world stage."

Donald: "We should increase our military presence worldwide and we should make sure that no country strays to socialism or communism."

Gloria: "We should nationalize the housing industry and make houses a free commodity. I believe that R1 zoning is terrible and should be abolished in favour of multiple-family zoning."

Alexandria: "I think homelessness is a big problem for America, and we should focus on making sure every American can afford to have a home, and we should abolish R1 zoning in favour of multiple family zoning and apartment buildings. We should also abolish rent and landlords."

Michelle: "I think homelessness disproportionately affects African-Americans, because they usually have lower incomes and experience racism when trying to buy a house, and we should try and tackle that with ending single-family zoning so that Blacks can have a better chance of getting a house."

Catherine: "There is obviously a disproportionate problem in buying a house for immigrants and Latinos, because they are new to the country and speak another language, so we should increase language services for Spanish speakers and we should abolish single-family zoning."

Elizabeth: "We need more affordable housing, so there can be better chances of people getting the housing they deserve, such as putting a cap on the price a house can be, abolishing R1 zoning etc, establishing a rent cap etc."

Andrew: "There should be less intervention within the housing market to increase the chances of someone buying a house, but there should also be a time limit for the amount of time a house can be on the market and after that amount of time, the price is lowered. I support single-family zoning because it makes individuals work harder to get a house."

Bill: "There should be almost no government intervention in the housing market. It is up to real estate companies to decide the prices for houses and nothing else. If people can't afford a house, or at least an apartment, that's their fault. I am for single-family zoning."

Rick: "It is not up to the government to decide whether housing prices are too high or too low. R1 zoning is very beneficial because it places the family at the heart of the household and gives benefit to people who spend their money wisely."

Gary: "There should be absolutely no government intervention in the housing market, real estate companies know what's best. As such, R1 zoning can continue to exist as long as it's deemed profitable"

Donald: "The government should not get involved in the housing market and single-family zoning is very beneficial to Americans"

All candidates agree that there should be some reform of occupation licensing, however that it is not too important of a topic.

Gloria: "I believe climate change is a big threat to our society, but one that can only be solved by introducing communism and moving beyond material needs. Only then will we truly establish international carbon neutrality."

Alexandria: "Climate change is one of the biggest existential threats humanity faces today, and it can only be beaten by a Green New Deal, which will create green jobs, phase out fossil fuels by 2040, create a diverse renewable energy sector and establish fair trade."

Michelle: "We should address climate change by investing in the renewal energy sector and promoting changes to day-to-day life."

Catherine: "Climate change is one of the leading causes of the refugee crisis, and we will continue to get refugees pouring into our country until it can be stopped. As such, we should invest in renewables and punish the largest polluters with fines."

Elizabeth: "Climate change is an extremely important problem that we must face together. We need better public transit, better renewables and less cars. I also support a pollution tax on large companies."

Andrew: "I believe we should invest in electric cars and electric vehicles and promote sustainable entrepreneurship and a more intelligence based response to the problem."

Bill: "I believe that climate change is happening but it is not caused by humans. Temperatures always rise when an Ice Age ends, and there is no point in trying to limit our carbon footprint when it has no adverse affect."

Rick: "Climate change is not human caused and is simply a natural occurrence. There is no point in trying to stop something that happens naturally, and it's a waste of money and resources."

Gary: "The free market can sort out climate change on its own, it does not need directions from the Federal Government. Instead, there should be increased benefits for creating eco-friendly products, but besides that the markets will eventually move to be more environmentally sound on their own."

Donald: "Climate change is not human caused, and trying to fight it is a useless waste of time. There is no point in trying to protect what is a sturdy environment when we can use it for our own economic benefit."

Gloria: "There should be full healthcare covered by a nationalized healthcare ministry. No part of it will be privatized."

Alexandria: "We should continue our national healthcare service, but also make healthcare coverage completely free and cover all categories."

Michelle: "There should be some free healthcare, such as emergency room visits and surgery, however anything non-life threatening should be allowed to be private."

Catherine: "There should be a mixed healthcare system. Citizens can choose to either use national or private healthcare, however new citizens who have been living in the country for more than a year should have access to full healthcare either way."

Elizabeth: "There should be free, universal healthcare to cover the costs of most medical conditions."

Andrew: "There should be private healthcare, with reduced costs for emergency room visits, surgery and life-threatening treatments."

Bill: "Healthcare should be fully privatized once again, though require companies to charge patients after the treatment is done."

Rick: "Healthcare should be privatized once again, though faith-based charities can lower costs for patients."

Gary: "There should be no government involvement in healthcare whatsoever, and the entire industry should be privatized."

Donald: "The healthcare industry should be re-privatized and allow states to set their own policy regarding it."

Gloria: "There should be absolutely no cuts to the budget and it should be increased in every aspect by at least 1.5%. We will tax the bourgeoisie out of existence and make sure that they pay, or they will be expelled from the country."

Alexandria: "The only part of the budget that we should cut is the military, and allot those cuts to other parts such as healthcare, welfare and the environment. We should continue to have a progressive tax system."

Michelle: "There should be minor cuts to the military and law enforcement, and instead focus on rehabilitation methods for the prison system under the social policy sector. We should keep the taxation amounts the same."

Catherine: "We should cut only the military and law enforcement parts of the budget and use those cuts to increase funding for better immigration and language infrastructure. We should continue to have a progressive tax system"

Elizabeth: "There should be massive cuts to military spending, which will go towards education, welfare and healthcare. We should continue to have a progressive tax system."

Andrew: "There should be a 5% reduction in all parts of the budget to allow more wiggle room for the private industry. We should swap our progressive tax system for a proportional one."

Bill: "There should be a 15% cut for welfare, healthcare, environment and education. There should be a reduction in taxes and an end to a progressive tax system."

Rick: "There should be cuts for welfare, healthcare and the environment in favour of the military, law enforcement and religious education. A flat tax should be instituted."

Gary: "There should be an 80% reduction in the budget all around, and there should be less included in any budget. There should be a flat tax system."

Donald: "There should be a 25% cut to welfare, healthcare, environment and education in favour of military, law enforcement and border control spending. A proportional tax system and an overall reduction in taxes should be installed."

ELECTION UPDATE:

Massive rallies were held today in multiple cities across the country, including a rally for Warren in Boston, Massachusetts that saw over 100,000 people participate. Rallies were also held for La Riva in Sacramento, California which saw over 10,000 people participate, and for Johnson, in which saw 30,000 people participate in it. However, tragedy also struck today as rallies were held for both Cortez-Masto and Trump in the city of Miami, Florida. Because of the directly opposing views of the two candidates and their supporters, and the proximity of the rally from one another, it was only a matter of time until they met up. At around 12:00 Noon, the two rallies met each other on the same street and a massive fight took place. Riot police were soon called in, but because of the sheer size of the rallies it was extremely difficult to disperse it as it took up the entire street. The fight took place for another 4 hours until it was finally broken up by law enforcement. The total number of people at that rally was 80,000, and there were over 1,000 casualties and 5 dead, along with $500,000 in property damage. Catherine issued a statement shortly after it broke up stating that "We do not condone the violence that occurred today at the Miami LAIMP Rally. We want peaceful solutions to racism, not violent." Donald did not give a response.

After the debate was postponed for four days after the chaos that ensued in Miami after the LAIMP-CPC counter-protest, including riots and mass protests, it was officially given the go as the situation has died down. All 10 candidates are present, and will be asked a total of 5 questions.

After a heated debate and an increase of violent rallies, this election is shaping up to be one of the most divisive in US history. It also appears that a second round is almost guaranteed, with 3 candidates neck and neck for first, second and third. Elizabeth Warren also announced that former Vice President Kamal Harris will be her running mate. The referendums are also looking to be very close, especially the state referendum.

First Round Election Results:

After a heated election, the results of the first round and the two referendums have finally been released, and it was extremely close. In a narrow first place is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who won 18% of the vote and 13 states. In a close second place is Gary Johnson, who won 15% of the vote and 14 states, beating out 3rd place place finisher Michael Yang, who also won 15% and 2 states but around 100,000 votes less than Johnson. In fourth is Donald Trump, who won 14% of the vote and 6 states, and fifth place went to Michelle Obama who managed to win 11% of the vote and 3 states! In a surprising upheaval of the political system, Elizabeth Warren and Bill Weld only won 10% and 7 states and 6% of the vote and 5 states respectively. In 8th place is Gloria La Riva who also won 6% of the vote and no states, which is an all time high for her political career. Catherine Cortez-Masto won only 5% of the vote and 2 states, and Rick Santorum came dead last with only 3% of the vote and 1 state, as most of his supporters went to Trump.

The two referendums were also quite close, especially the state referendum. The state referendum, which would reduce the number of states from 52 to 15, passed with 50.4% of the population voting for and 49.6% voting against, making it one of the closest national referendums ever! The new map for the states will be finalized at a convention on June 10th, and officially put into effect on the 15th. The referendum on changing the senate electoral system from mixed-member proportional representation to statewide proportional representation passed with more support, earning 56% of the vote for implementing it. The system will be used for the legislative elections of next year.

Final Election Update:

The election is being held today, which is expected to be a very close and divisive election, however not as much as the 2020 or 2026 Presidential elections, which were very hotly contested. Here are the final opinion polls:

As you can see, that undecided portion of the population may very well dictate who becomes the next president.

Results

After a tenuous election, the results have finally been counted and they read as following:

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 98,579,349 votes, 50.5% of the vote
Gary Johnson, 98,348,449 votes, 49.5% of the vote

As such, Ocasio-Cortez of the Socialist-Green Ticket has barely won the 2030 American Presidential Election. She won 20 states and 1 territory, and Gary Johnson won 28 states. This election is one of the closest ever in American history, and was even closer than the 2000 election. Alexandria is to be sworn in on the 15th, the day the State Convention ratifies the new map of the US states. Johnson originally questioned the results, given that he won a majority of the states and lost by only 230,000 votes, but he eventually conceded stating that "I don't want a repeat of the 2020 election and I don't think any level of recounts will show that 230,000 votes are invalid". Outgoing President Sanders congratulated Alexandria, saying that he was happy that there would be someone to fill his place in politics after he leaves and that she was going to be a good President. She is the first ever elected female President, and Jill Stein will be the second ever female Vice President, after Kamala Harris.

OOC: American politicians tend to stick around for a very long time. Biden did file papers for re-election, and if he did run he would be 82 years old, and he would be 86 if he somehow finished his term. Considering this, it's not that crazy to think Bernie and Trump would both be alive, and voters tend not to care too much about the oldness of a politician. in 2030, Bernie would be 88 years old and Trump would be 83 years old. Very old, yes, but not dead (yet).
