I roleplay with the name Tōgoku, which is Japanese for "eastern country" (東国), as my county is a union of former Japanese colonies on the West Coast of North America, which is east of Japan. "Chrysanthemum State" is a poetic name for the nascent confederacy that became popular during the War of Independence.

My nation's name came from the word Hermosa which means "Beautiful" by Conquistadors when they landed on the island referring to the landscape they saw. Christopher Columbus heard his men mesmerized by the view that he decided to call the island "Hermosamente" which means "Beautifully" referring to the coastal areas, beaches, and the landscape in general before making his way to The Bahamas and Cuba.

[Alstsvet]

The term "Altsvet" actually comes from Vikings in the north. It was said in the 10th Century A.D, a group of Vikings went down the Rhine, pillaging and burning towns and cities. This was until they found a small settlement, which they promptly razed and made a temporary camp that they called "Alstsvet". Since then, the name has stuck for the Grand Duchy.

The Jianxi-Fujian-Soviet was the first communist base-area formed after the Autumn-Harvest-Uprising of 1927. It was where the route-armies and the Guerilla-forces beat the nationalist encirclement campaigns and fought of the bandits of that warlord Jiang Jieshi. Officially the Base-Areas form a loose confederation called the Chinese Soviet Republic, but Jianxi-Fujian is the only one that developed a sizeable military force and wasn't shifting it's territory over the civil war, so in 1955 when the stalemate of the civil war lead to the truce with the Imperialists the name was pretty much used synonymous for the CSR. The Nationalists, claiming they really were the only china, adopted it as well and it has since stuck: the Base-Area of the Jianxi-Fujian-Soviet.

[Greater Angelus]

"Angelus" is primarily an exonym for the country, coming from the designation first used by Imperial (in the 1600s) and subsequently world researchers and observers. The official title of "Greater Angelus" is currently used by the Government, as well as the World Assembly and international forums. "Greater" designates not only the country's desire during the War of Liberation to unify all Angelan Catrionans under one flag, but the Government's present official position on territorial irredentism, particularly the region of Aichelle and outlying islands with significant Catrionan populations.

Angelan citizens commonly call the country Andeo, an ancient term referring to all of modern day Angelus and Aichelle; Mai-Pthumera ("Great Pthumera"), less commonly used but also recognized, a term which places the Temple of Pthumera as the center and core of the country; and North Catriona, a term with ethno-nationalist connotations which deems Angelus only a component of a Greater "Catriona".

It's really simple, Portugal was taken and this was a "new" Portugal project, so Novo Portugal seemed perfect.

The word Thialrer is derived from Ancient Thialren Thielre'ar, itself taken from Old Thalren Thielarica. The word Thielarica originally referred to Thalrenius in the Old Thalren language, but under the Principality of Thalrenius's rule over all of Thialrer, it came to refer to its entire domain, that is, Thialrer. Thielarica was derived from Ancient Thalren Thegnristi'eryica, which is thought to be derived from Proto-Iranian TengristiAryan or a similar word, meaning Tengrist Aryan. This itself is thought to be derived from Proto-Iranian TengristiAryan búHmiš, meaning "Tengrist Aryan Land". This referred to the Tengrist faith and practises of the Thalren before Christianisation, as well as their Indo-Iranic heritage.

In the Thalren language, Thielarica evolved into Thelranica, which then passed into the Thialren language as a loanword. The Ancient Thialren Thielre'ar evolved into Thialrer, which now exists in the Thialren language as an archaic name for Thialrer. It found its way into English during the Middle Ages while Thelranica was adopted in Latin and the other Romance languages.

Australia was derived from the Latin Terra Australis - southern land - and gradually came to be the main name associated with the island continent over the course of the 19° century, replacing the old name of New Holland.

The adjective Syndic is often prefixed to the nation's name to delineate it from the past imperialist government and to reflect the syndicalist nature of its present society.

It's full official name is the Commonwealth of Australia, but is interchangeably refered to by many other names, including as the Syndicalist Republic of Australia, the Australic Syndic Union, and the Australasiatic Commonwealth.

[Firepurge]

IC origins:

Firepurge can trace its origins back to the Greenleaf tribe, which controlled a small amount of land which is now at the heart of Firepurge's territory. They were a peaceful tribe that did not have a culture of fighting or violence. Their native language was Greentongue.

A long time ago, the Greenleaf tribe was colonised by a country whose name has been forgotten (due to the government removing it from the history books.) The colonial power was brutal, using violence to take over the Greenleaves' territory and killing many unarmed civilians during the fighting. The Greenleaves, not used to war, were unable to defend themselves. The colonial power turned the Greenleaf territory into a colony of their empire. They were very oppressive, and exploited the native Greenleaves, confiscating their land and forcing them to do hard labour on the fields. They were not enslaved, but were not much better off than slaves.

Later, the colonial power became democratic and introduced democracy to the Greenleaf colony. However, they were still just as oppressive, and elections were rigged. The local government didn't have much power anyway and the colonisers' own government overseas had all the power. This gave the Greenleaves a bad first impression of democracy. They saw it as a way for the colonisers to weaken them by making them waste time debating over things rather than taking action.

A long time passed, but the Greenleaves never forgot their past independance and secretly trained for a war over the years. As far as the colonial government was concerned, they had assimilated the Greenleaves and all signs of resistance had been stamped out, but they hadn't. In 2010, the Greenleaves suddenly rose up from the shadows and overthrew their colonial government, founding the Firepurge Empire.

Assuming all other countries were just as bad as the one that colonised them, they denounced all other countries and declared them to be 'evil foreign influences.' The new Firepurge government was isolationist, autocratic and totalitarian, and the new country had a culture of violence, loving to burn things or blow things up. They made Firepurge self-sufficient, completely closed the country's borders and stopped trading with other countries. Then they declared that the entire world was corrupted with 'evil' and it was their mission to purge all 'evil' from the world, one step at a time.

Of course, the government was just as oppressive as the colonial government had been, and many argue it was just an excuse to justify brainwashing the public, removing many basic human rights and conquering nearby countries. They cut off access to the internet and created their own local intranet, created a new calendar by declaring 2010 to be 'year 0' and much more.

Now, with no allies and almost no communication with the rest of the world except trying to convince other countries to adopt their new 'purge' ideology, they slowly conquer nearby countries that are weaker than them and expand their borders. They will continue to do so unless someone stops them...

tl;dr: Many years ago, a large colonial power colonises a small tribe and oppresses them. They introduce democracy, but elections are rigged and they get a bad first impression of it. The decendents of the people from the small tribe never forget their past freedom and eventually rebel against the colonial power. They found their own independant country (which is just as oppressive as the colonial power was), and declare that every single other country in the world is 'evil' because they assume they are all just the same as the colonial power.

OOC origins:
I played Nation States a few years ago but never really got into it. I decided that I wanted to give it another go, and I'd created a really cool looking flag on Canva so I thought it would be a shame to waste it. I built the entire lore of the nation off the flag and some other ideas which I already had floating around for a while, although some aspects are inspired by real world dictatorships. Firepurge is most similar to North Korea, but they are capitalist and allow private businesses so they have a better economy (which allows them to be truly self sufficient), though it still isn't great. Their intranet is also better than North Korea's intranet, containing thousands of web pages that are mostly privately owned, although it's still nothing compared to the internet. It's also partially inspired by 'this is cringe, why don't we just burn it all'

IC Origins:

The Revolutionary State of Cascadia, as it is officially known, quickly became known as the Cascadian Rouge on the international scene after its establishment due to similarities it held to Democratic Kampuchea, more commonly known as the Khmer Rouge. Chief among these were a total abolishment of currency and evacuating the populace from the cities to more rural living situations.

OOC origins: It just seemed like a fun concept to be a paranoid and ultra environmentalist nation.

[Alzatia]

Alsatia is the Latin name for Alsace/Elsaß, which became an independent nation in my timeline, after the fall of the Holy Roman Empire. Alzatia is the Anglicized version of the Latin name.

[The Empire of Ostenia]

The 'East Nemedian' name for Ostenia, Œsterneheim derives from the German Ost-heim(at), which stands for "eastern home" and is cognate with Österreich (German name for Austria). The lands east of the Nemedian-Acheronian Empire, which comprised of the Hyperborean petty kingdoms are called Œsterneheim for this reason, due to the Nemedian expeditions to the east.

[Deacarsia]

The name Deacarsia comes from the Irish phrase Tá Día Annseo, meaning “God is here.” Over time, the phrase was reordered and corrupted to Dia Tar Aseo, which later became into Dea Car Sia. The spelling later became standardized to Deacarsia.

I pressed the random name button twice in the nation creator. The first name was Albosiac, which I used for my region. The second was Deacarsia, which I used for my nation.

[Imperium Brasiliense]

Same as the real origin of the name for Brazil:

The word "Brazil" likely comes from the Portuguese word for brazilwood, a tree that once grew plentifully along the Brazilian coast. In Portuguese, brazilwood is called pau-brasil, with the word brasil commonly given the etymology "red like an ember", formed from brasa ("ember") and the suffix -il (from -iculum or -ilium).

Although since this is an alternate history version where the monarchy never fell and became a superpower on the level of the United States or British Empire, also very imperialist given that it conquered 4 of its neighbours and only Argentina and Chile were spared from its expansionist efforts.

I couldn't use the name Brazilian Empire so I used the Latin version instead where it became Imperium Brasiliense; it also fit since it's official religion was at one point Roman Catholicism, which does use Latin in a ceremonial capacity even in modern times.

From Old Central-Ohlagic "Cüloš" meaning "river delta". The tribe of Central Ohlagic people who lived by a large river became known by the name "Hťocüloš" or "people of the River Delta." They then migrated into new lands as they started to be pushed out of their old ones, but kept the name as that was how they were known. Eventually they conquered a whole new land. This became "Pačüloš," place of Čüloš" (as the word began to semantically and phonologically drift towards its current version: "Bačıloš." This gets anglicized as "Chiloshia"
