What are stereotypes about YN?

Postby Tiberia Maritima » Thu Oct 08, 2020 10:35 am

Whether your nation's denizens find them insulting or wear them as a badge of honor, what are some generalizations made about your nation and its people? We all traffic in stereotypes in some form or another (hopefully not to be bigoted!), and knowing what others say about YN is always useful, even if they aren't really true.

Tiberia Maritima is noted for its religiosity, and has deep historical connections to the early histories of the Abrahamic faiths. It holds no official religion, but stereotypically any Tiberian is likely to be 1) Muslim, Christian, or Jewish and 2) quite personally devout. This does not, in fact, suggest conservative views on society and culture; the opposite holds true. Through arduous political struggle and the creation of a (relatively) recent socialist society, Tiberia also has tightly integrated religious and ethnic communities as the local political bodies that make up the country have made it a priority to reconcile the differences therein. Because of this process of integration, Tiberians are also seen as pacifistic because of the memories of trauma and violent struggle; for those who have negative opinions of the country, this is usually generalized as cowardice or docility.

Normally the stereotypes are about being a border country, money wise, hardworkers and empreneteurs aslo know as being as stingy or even more than Dutch, Scottish or Genoese.

Like:

The greatest consensus appears to be we're pacifists and environmentalist hippies. The former is definitely true, but the latter mostly depends on the region and the person.

Peaceniks (due to the pacifist nature), a bunch of religious nutjobs, smartasses, carefree, very hospitable and inclusive, and tree-huggers.
A lot of it isn't true though, Haremmians advocate for peace but won't avoid war if necessary (self-defence). Even though a majority belongs to a religion, Haremmians (not the conservatives) tend to be open for new ideas and respect/tolerance for other beliefs. An example is legalizing same-sex marriage in the nation. As for being smartasses, Haremmians tend to speak more often about their thoughts and ideas due to the the nation's curriculum of having a student-centred approach towards education. Essentially, every Haremmian is a smartass in the country but they don't take it personally or as an offense.

Positive: Hardworking, resiliant, rugged, nature loving
Neutral: Religious
Negative: Backward, inbred, kinda racist, drink too much

"Hillbilly" was once an offensive term but some Appalachians are trying to turn it around and make it positive.
In reality, racism isn't at all as big as outsiders think it is, larger cities are actually very tolerant and some areas have substantial Black, or Native populations. Also, most of us are not inbred. People who say we're racist inbreds are just ignorant and have never actually visited us!

We do like our booze though. And guns. Again, not as extreme as people think, but there's truth to it!
Some of our nation is pretty rural, but we see it as something to be prideful of, not ashamed of. Other countries especially in North America might see us as underdeveloped.

Postby The Order of the Sovereign Heavens » Mon Oct 19, 2020 7:48 am

There are a number of stereotypes about various parts of the Order's society and the wider culture of the lands in which they reside. Here are a select few of them.

The Order
The Order of the Sovereign Heavens are a pious and religious order, that much is true, so stereotypes abound regarding to what extent the piety of Order members reaches, with many assuming that Order members spend most of their days in prayer to the heavens. Another common conception is that the Order members act as aristocratic remnants of a bygone era, constantly strutting around in blue robes emblazoned with the Order's crest, wishing that they lived in more medieval times of chivalry, more active defence of the faith and pitched battles with sword and shield. While it is true that Order members wear their robes proudly in ceremonial occasions, in other occasions, they simply wear business suits with blue ties and the logo of the Order on a badge.

When it comes to the Order-employed priesthood, there is an understanding that the Order's priests are more passionate than most priests. In the Cmosto-language film Ecsorcistos, a blatant rip-off of The Exorcist which is very popular in the Order Estates, the priest sent to exorcise the demon (in this case a hwesca, or 'shadowspawn') is an Order priest, and the very over-the-top performance of Tèrestn Molescu, the actor playing the priest, was considered extremely close to how an Order priest would act, compared to any other priest.

Order medical science is routinely mocked. While Order medical centres provide a critical completely state-operated healthcare system, and Order medical staff are considered diligent and hard-working, the state of care one might receive at an Order hospital is often lower and less advanced than a comparable private hospital. A popular saying goes "I'd rather pay to cure a cold than pay doubly to get my own heart back", referring to a single incident where mixed-up records caused a patient to undergo a heart transplant rather than the kidney transplant they were waiting to undergo. These stereotypes portray the Order's hospitals as not only incompetent, but medieval in practice, which is far from the actual case, even if there remains a lot to be desired.

The Estates
The Estates are the lands owned and operated by the Order. The Order maintains a form of government that many consider antiquated, as most other Dorean holy orders have either disbanded or are maintained in a much lesser capacity, while the Order of the Sovereign Heavens and some of its subsidiary Orders maintain far more sway in government. As such, the popular conception of the government remains mostly that of a dictatorial aristocracy or oligarchy. The government may be considered ultra-conservative, religious, backwards, but some prefer to see it as well-intentioned but inept. This description is likely fairly apt - the government does support many social services that benefit the poorer folk, but refuse to enact some reforms which many would prefer be enacted, largely due to religious pressure.

The People
The conception of the residents of the Order Estates generally presents them as highly religious, generally conservative, superstitious, and often quite self-repressed. Beyond that, the hand of the Order is often seen in many aspects of their day-to-day lives, which does nothing to help alleviate accusations of a dictatorial regime. Beyond that, however, citizens of the Estates are often considered hard-working, polite, somewhat ignorant but not hateful of outsiders, and as people with a fairly dry sense of humour. The citizens of the Estates will be quick to criticise their government, as many do, but they generally see it as the lesser of myriad evils, and as more of a meritocracy, and a good one at that, than many other countries. As such, there is a very defensive attitude taken when insulting countries. Citizens of the Estates can insult the Estates, but outsiders had better watch out.

In love with their own past, the time of struggle and the valiant guerilla-fighters, indoctrinating their youth with rampant "war-communism", firmly stuck in their militarist "The world is against us"-mindset, the ubiquituous uniforms and insigniausually paint the picture of a very nationalist people. Anti-comsumerism as a key virtue of a state that seems in many areas very backward may seem strange to foreigners, but serves a source of national identity and pride: modern capitalism can go fuck itself, it has no place here. Tourists stick out like a sore thumb, though the population usually makes them feel very welcome and does not expüect them to adapt beyond the basics to a lifestyle completely alien to visitors from the west. Stuck in the past, that is basically what the west says and thinks... and we don't give a damn.

"The general consensus about Saralonia when regarding stereotypes is that the nation hates freedom, liberty, democracy and praises Joseph Stalin and is probably a dictatorship, especially people that are from capitalist nation that directly antagonize the country, which could't be farther from the truth, in fact most Saralonians would look at you with disgust if you suggested they liked Stalin or totalitarianist orwellian dictators, along with then telling you to just stop bothering them because it turns out it's currently election season and a lot of candidates from more than just two parties are participating in a debate broadcasted trough the internet and tv via various news outlets with their own thoughts and opinions differing from the current government which is only given more power to the Chairman/woman due to recently fighting against Stalinists, we may be red but we will never follow Stalin"
-A particularly frustrated Saralonian trying to explain he personally isn't a socialist just because he lives in a socialist country.
