Trust me partner, Japan is not only hikki, xenophobe and overwork. Japan has an extremeyl rich, sophisitcated and unique culture and beliefs. It's strange for us, because it has fewer similarities with Western one, to which we are used to, due to long isolation, until very Meiji restoration. Until then, it wasn't encountered by westerners before Sengoku, then protugese traders reached it, but were limited. Then, after Christian uprising, Tokugawa shoguns have imposed Sakoku laws - an isolationism policy. Becasue of this, and isolation, it developed with little western influence for many centuries. It had westernization for a very short time in it's historical sense.

It's not only anime and weird things. It's a long living and ancient set of traditions, inverweaved with Shinto - an animistic religion, which venerated ancestors and worshipped many deitied.

North Korea, ruled by Kim dynasty (Claims to be democratic, but in fact a mix between "communism" and absolute monarchy if ya' ask me.) is far worse place to live, just trust me. Somalia with a crippling crime, and Venezuela with extremely complicated situation are far worse places than good ol' Japan too.

Still, I wouldn't wanna live in Japan. Those work hours combined with corporate samurai culture are total hell. And people have actually died of this, this condition is called Karoshi. Besides, it's too collectivist if ya' ask me, and it has really strict set of laws. Ain't a place for mah' freedom lowin' nature. And there were many dark spots in it's history, plus, they tend to cultivate racism and xenophobia.

Wouldn't be exactly a picnic for us, western folks, but crime level it low, and they ain't starving, instead they enjoy rather opulent lifestyle.

Well, in terms of wanky nationalism where they've got to constantly talk shit about their neighbours/old rivals I've seen quite a lot in some Chinese and Korean novels/media. Haven't seen so much in Japanese stuff, but it's probably still there. I was probably just lucky to not come across it.
