"Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.”

Buscoduci, die xx. Septembris 1627

Omnibus has visuris salutem in Domino!
To all who read this: salvation in the Lord!

Hearty thanks to all who prayed for my safe return to 's-Hertogenbosch after my pastoral visit to the deanery of Tilburg.
With regards to the first question, I'd say that all good Catholics love the diocese. Only the heretics, especially the Calvinists, hate the diocese. I estimate that 95% of the inhabitants of the diocese love it.
The aspects that are most loved, are the beautiful and reverend liturgy, the good pastors that take care of the flock, and the fight against our common enemy: the heretic States General, who seceded from the Spanish Netherlands.
I am not sure what is meant by laws based on patriotism. So I can't answer that question.
There are two types of feasts in the liturgical year: those of the general calendar and those of the particular calendar. The latter contains the feast days of saints who lived here or whose relics are venerated in our diocese.
It is difficult to say what percentage of citizens is in the army, because we have a lot of Spanish soldiers here and because a lot of people help them without being an official member of the army.

With my episcopal blessing,
+ Michael Ophovius
Episcopus dioecesis Buscoducencis

zoe bidden wij Onser Vrouwen,

When we'll have to part this earth,
we'll pray to Our Lady,
that she will guide us. Amen.

What percentage of your nation’s citizens say they love their country?
About 58 - 63% of Merriwhethrans report feeling, on average, "somewhat" or "strongly" positive about their nation domestically, 57 - 60% about their nation in the context of history, and 55 - 59% about their nation in a global context.

What aspects of your country are most loved by the citizenry?
People most love their sense of freedom (87%), quality of public services (84%), the environmental beauty (82%), and the quality of social relations in their communities (81%). Merriwhethran national healthcare, public education, public transportation, infrastructure, freedom from crime and poverty, and innovation are second-to-none, and these are aspects of the nation or components of the aforementioned categories that the people express pride and satisfaction with.

Are there any laws based on patriotism?
No. To put it simply, people's pride in the nation is respected as a product of the righteousness of the nation's actions and character. The role of authorities, as far as they can be understood to be independent from the people themselves, is to act on the effort to make Merriwhether a nation that the people can be proud to be a part of, not to create a hollow sense of pride without regards to Merriwhether's treatment of its own or its role in the world. A rightfully proud nation is one that works to earn its pride through benevolence, courage, and pursuit of progress. Therefore, we make no laws respecting the contemporaneous notions of whether patriotism is a rightful or wrongful attitude.

Are there any holidays etc. based on patriotism?
There are no holidays that celebrate explicitly the idea of patriotism or love of nation, but most traditional or unique Merriwhethran holidays tend to evoke a sense or flair of patriotism that blends in with the relevant festivities.

What proportion of citizens are in the Armed forces of your nation (if applicable)?
1 in 174, or about 0.57% of the population, are active duty or reserve force personnel of the military. Approximately of these, 658,200 are active-duty, and 289,500 are reservists.

What percentage of citizens work for public services?
26.34% of Merriwhethrans are public service workers or otherwise government-employed. This statistic does not include military servicepeople, whose counting would raise the total portion to nearly 27%.

How common is voluntary work within your nation?
Voluntary work is relatively common, especially in social charity or humanitarian efforts. Our culture and values hold this sort of work in high regards, and our generous social safety net, healthcare policies, national education system, labor laws, and other aspect of society facilitate more personal freedom to indulge in one's hobbies or participate in such voluntary initiatives.

In our nation Patriotism is very much respected. Our patriotism speaks louder than words. It shows our pride in who we are and lets everyone know what we stand for.
