The Japanese used thousands of trucks in Malaya.

Well, my nation just lobs explosives into rooms, collapse buildings and drive cars through walls as a suitable alternative. No need for room clearing if there is no room to clear.
Alternatively if in populated area with insurgency then use optical equipment and shooting through walls. Let fate decide the rest.
There's a reason why my nation's armed forces gear itself around establishing as much control over land as possible before first contact. Fighting through urban areas is a costly endeavor (mostly in mont.)

Nah, two of Yamashita's divisions were fully motorized. The 18th was foot infantry but of course requisitioned hundreds of Thai and Malayan trucks alongside the bicycles.

I think the common image of Burma is Japanese on bicycles going down the peninsula through the jungles to strategically outflank the Commonwealth but actually it was mostly mechanized attacks down major roads.

:thonk:

That's a bit chadder then tbf, since they managed to overrun 2-3x the amount of troops in big "frontal" attax.

Then again they were probably attacking like one or two Malay companies with like six or seven Japanese ones I guess.

It was the Indians, and then an Aussie division whose CO left the entire theatre because according to him he had an "epiphany" on how to defeat the Japanese.

yes women wouldn't be able to survive the several ankle breaking falls out heroes have while shooting dozens of coked out kids and also the upper body strength they need to drag the war criminals to the justicecopter

e: anyway the movie takes place in like 2025 or something so it's not that far off in the future

except the air force's budget for B-21 went to making a flying command center instead and INSCOM appears to be its own military branch now

unf. the movie mangles the paperback's story in that there's a whole cabal of elite banksters trying to make UN 2 and impose one world order and that explains the ending better than the movie does which is just skull mask mode ):

Which are more motivated fighters?: local conscripts or ideologically motivated foreign volunteers.
Also evidence from 1914 Britain VS Germany implies professional soldiers are militarily superior to conscripts (see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVs1F3x ... 1&index=22)

British professional soldiers were better than German conscripts, because they were better trained. As WW1 went on the British conscripts who replaced the British professional soldiers were of similar quality to German conscripts. The professional soldiers died to artillery and machine guns just about as quickly as everyone else.

The foreign volunteers are probably better motivated, but that isn't going to have a huge effect on their military capability.

Nah thats a bit of a myth. They are effective out to 300~ meters but after that it does get kind of weird.

The only "weird" thing is that the rocket tends to move into crosswinds, rather than against them, which probably contributes to Americans' inability to hit anything with it. Naturally, the Russians would say the same about M72 LAW being "weird" because it moves against crosswinds rather than into it. This is somewhat counter-intuitive for someone who has been trained extensively to compensate for wind in one particular direction and now has to do the exact opposite I suppose.

The other reason is video games because IDK gameplay.

TPFII wrote:Aren't there more modern rocket systems that use venturis to spin-stabilize the rocket?

PG-7 is already spin stabilized, obviously. The fins are right there. I'd imagine it's the direction of canting of the stabilizing fins that makes it move into the crosswind rather than against it. Presumably M72's fins are canted in the opposite direction, and so it moves in the opposite direction.

It's as accurate as a Carl Gustav or any other recoilless projector with practice.

Fun fact
Much like America test fired the RPG-7 for assessing it's capabilities, we ALSO fired M72 LAWs and American recoilless rifles to test theirs. Big shock, I know.

Much like how the Americans didn't understand how to use the optic device on the RPG-7, we also didn't understand how to use the M72s sights intuitively (!)

RPG-7 is perfectly capable of hitting a target at a range of 500m. Not a moving tank or anything necessarily, but a building or structure or position is certainly no issue.

Langenia wrote:Is it true that Soviet/Russian military equipment is cheaper and easier to maintain compared to Western-made military equipment? If so, does this come at the cost of quality?

Some of it yes some of it no.

I wouldn't call the self loading mechanism of the T-72 simple.

Soviet equipment does tend to be made *differently*. Differently does not mean necessarily better or worse. we have different thought processes of how things should work.

British regulars were well trained in delivering rapid and accurate rifle fire, and there are examples of German soldiers thinking they were under machine gun fire when they were just facing rifleman.

But as I noted, training your soldiers to shoot more accurately doesn't make them immune to artillery or machine guns. The British standards rapidly decreased as the war went on and they needed to get bodies on the front line.
