Advertising in YN

Postby Greenwichian Arcadia » Wed Jun 03, 2020 7:50 am

As advertising becomes increasingly prevalent in our times, so does its criticism. Most of the world's governments had tried to regulate ads at certain points in history, with tobacco and alcohol ad restrictions being perhaps the most common. That inspired me to make this query about advertising in your nation.

Only nations with some sort of advertising are admitted. Y'know, I was tempted to make the first question like 'Are ads allowed in YN?' That would lead to a bunch of 'banned!' responses with N/As in other questions, which kinda eliminates the whole purpose.

In general, what's your government stance on advertising?
The Gaeltyn has no stance on advertising, unless complaints are received about it being profane or inappropriate.

Are there any media where no one can advertise by law?
No. Though there aren't many forms of media in Shalotte to begin with.

Are there any banned formats of advertising?
If your advertisement is likely to cause harm, it would likely be banned.

Are there any products which cannot be advertised?
If you're not allowed to own it, you're not allowed to advertise it either.

Any other limitations on outdoor ads?
This is essentially one of the only forms of advertisements in Shalotte, and is generally limited to people putting up posters or painting their advertisements on the sides of buildings they own, or on other buildings under agreement.

Provided it's not inappropriate or dangerous in some way, which is determined on a case-by-case basis if complaints are received, the Gaeltyn has no policy on it.

Any other limitations on printed ads?
The Islander is currently the only print publication in the isles. It is amenable to featuring limited advertising according to its own, internal policies. Few businesses outside of Alauna avail themselves of the service, however.

Any other limitations on radio/TV ads?
There is no TV network in Shalotte. Radio is limited to inter-settlement communications. So far, nobody has had the idea of using those communications systems to advertise anything.

Any other limitations on online ads?
Shalotte is served by exactly one, low-bandwidth international Internet connection, which only connects the Gaeltyn, a couple of Alauna-based educational institutions, a few larger, Alauna-based businesses with international aspirations, and a handful of affluent hobbyists. Suffice to say, there is no online advertising industry in Shalotte.

Any additional info not covered by the above questions?
Outside of the capital city most trade is conducted in the ancient ways, with few rural Shalottes even using currency at all. The capital and some of the larger towns in the islands have developed some larger, more recognisable businesses, but these tend to be small and family-owned, and have yet to develop 'brands'. Advertising in Shalotte is limited and antiquated, with limited reach and fewer avenues to pursue it. Western-style capitalism remains a distant development for the time being.

Are there any media where no one can advertise by law?
No
Are there any banned formats of advertising?
No
Are there any products which cannot be advertised?
No
Any other limitations on outdoor ads?
If you put your ad on someone else's property, they'll probably get rid of it and/or try to sue you
Any other limitations on printed ads?
Only those set by the people who print them
Any other limitations on radio/TV ads?
Only those set by the people who broadcast them
Any other limitations on online ads?
Let's just say people with ad blockers tend to see a lot of blank pages

In general, what's your government stance on advertising?
There are no privately owned companies in Prozitia, but one can make an agreement with their union to open up a small business. Since most of the economy is run by large co-operatives rather than union-permitted businesses, adverts are rare to find. So, unless it was done illegally, advertising is generally seen as a trivial matter by the government.
Are there any media where no one can advertise by law?
Government-owned non-entertainment channels.
Are there any banned formats of advertising?
Misleading ads, ad placement without permission.
Are there any products which cannot be advertised?
Technically, no. But since there are extensive license acquiring procedures for most potentially dangerous items, you might need to have a really good reason and good training on handling them to sell certain products. Also, your business must be legal and your products must be first-hand. Second-hand (or third-hand) items are only sellable to government stocks, but you will be offered a compelling amount of money for them if they are valuable.
Any other limitations on outdoor ads?
Only billboards. One small or medium-sized poster per each billboard. No large posters.
Any other limitations on printed ads?
You must have permission and they must be small(to reduce waste).
Any other limitations on radio/TV ads?
You cannot advertise on channels owned by the government unless it's an entertainment channel. Individual channels do exist but on the same level as small businesses, so you may make an agreement with one of them.
Any other limitations on online ads?
Same as radio and TV ads.
Any additional info not covered by the above questions?
All working within a small business have equal administrative power, so hiring people means giving up some autonomy. Although rare, some small businesses have become big enough to be co-operatives. When a small business becomes a co-operative, the original owner becomes a mere executive council member and may be discharged by vote.

We've heard the same thing from a lot of the companies. They don't want free speech. They think that the people they're working with will be too upset with what they see. They also don't want to offend people. But they really don't understand the psychology of the audience. They think that their job is to please. But the people they work with have other goals. They're very sensitive and sensitive-hearted people. And they're not going to be pleased with anything that comes from our side.
