Worst is 2005. For one simple reason - "Black Sunday".

This was an attempt to forcibly seize power by the fascist forces of the "Union of Saviors of the Country" organization. The uprising began in the morning after reading the announcement during the news release. A few hours later, chaos swept through the Oktyabrsky district, and then Skidelsky. The union stated that the government and the president are participating in a world conspiracy to enslave the world by Masons and Illuminati. Union forces destroyed stores, shopping centers and other crowded places. Several billboards were also burned. The next day the uprising was crushed, the "Union of Saviors of the Country" was declared an extremist organization, the leaders of the Union, who were directly related to the uprising, were sent to prison. As a result, the uprising killed 174 people.

[Consigahria]

On June 22nd, 2136, 125 miles south-southeast off the coast of Vermillion City's southernmost boroughs, two powerful megathrust earthquakes jolted Capitol Territory and the entire western coast of the nation. The first earthquake was measured at 8.7 on the Richter scale, and the second at 9.6. The first earthquake struck at 8:37 am and lasted for 12 seconds, killing over 1.14 million people, injuring 120 million others, and causing an estimated R$250 trillion in damages. The second earthquake struck shortly afterwards, at 9:26 am, and lasted for 21 seconds, injuring another 300 million, killing another 3.3 billion, and causing another estimated R$380 trillion in damages. More than 60% of buildings in Vermillion City, and more than 80% in Tanahog, were damaged or destroyed in the earthquakes, causing fires and mass flash flooding in low-lying areas. Total damages exceeded R$630 trillion; total number of civilian deaths, either from complications of injuries or as a direct consequence, exceeded 46 million people.

After the first earthquake, those near the coasts who survived were urged to escape to higher grounds, but most found the effort futile.

At 9:32 am, a 12-meter tsunami inundated the western coastline, causing another R$120 billion in damages, as well as injuring and killing another 3 billion people. The tsunami didn't recede until late that night, and the waters which carried debris, houses, cars, and materials from countless buildings took its stolen lives and treasures, including three massive oil refineries, out to deep sea.

1.9 billion people are currently unaccounted for, either having been buried under buildings, drowned, otherwise killed, or carried out to sea. 3.34 billion people lost their lives in the incident and their bodies recovered, and over 420 million people were injured. The public sector suffered a financial loss of more than R$750 billion, less than half of estimated damages to the entire nation.

Even three days after the indicent, many hospitals along the western coast are damaged beyond the capacity to treat their patients, and the emergency services of most cities are still struggling to restore order as entire hospitals take to the skies in helicopters. The Operatives' Division, CIA (Consigahrian Intelligence Agency), FIB (Federal Investigation Bureau), COWTA (Consigahrian Operations and World Technical Agency), and National Police Agency have dispatched helicopters to rescue stranded people from rooftops and to deliver food and water. According to reports, extractions could finish in about three weeks.

The federal government convened on June 23rd, and the Prime Minister ordered all buildings in the nation to be upgraded in order to withstand 9.0 earthquakes. He also wrote a check of R$800 billion to the Federal Bank of Consigahria to help pay for reparations, a move that would ultimately put him R$300 billion in debt. Other federal governments sent financial aid.

As of June 25th, millions of families lit incense and candles in mourning, as construction crews worked tirelessly in the background, to commemorate their fallen loved ones.

[VlaRiSsiA]

The bleakest period in VlaRiSsiA was in the 2130s and 40s, specifically between 2135 and 2145, where tens of millions were killed in an unfortunate series of events including famine, disease, political repression, genocide and finally the horrific invasion launched by the Third Duloch.

In 2135, an outbreak of the dreaded Onionitus Parasite infected 8 million people and killed 3 million. The parasite destroyed millions of acres if farmland, starving 12 million people. Another million died from dehydration due to the order to avoid all water. This was just the first of many events.

Later that year, one of shrek’s closest advisors attempted to assassinate him. Angered by this, the supreme leader ordered the greatest political terror in human history. Tens of millions of people were rounded up and either sent to the gulags or executed. Entire cities were massacred and mass executions of hundreds of thousands each took place. Over the course of two years between 2136 and 2138, 35 million people were executed and 65 million imprisoned, with most of them dying in the labor camps. This terror would kill 50 times as many people as the Stalinist Great Purge and so would be called the Greater Purge. Over half of Shrek’s Military officers were killed, which would come back to haunt VlaRiSsiA later.

Following the terror, Shrek wanted to do some genocide. In 2139, 7 million ethnic gingerbredmen were executed. Millions of gingerbredmen would be sent to execution facilities were they would be beheaded, mutilated or even had their gumdrop buttons surgically removed. Massacres were common and by the end of the year, half of all gingerbredmen were killed. The survivors were taken as slave laborers in the gulag.

In mid 2139, the VlaRiSsiAn Military launched an invasion of the Swampolish Republic, killing 1 million civilians. They would sign a non-aggression pact with the Third Duloch, which was busy invading the rest of Europe. Little did Shrek know how evil the fascist Fuhrerquaad was, and how much he despised the Ogre’s Republic and it’s communist ideas.

In early 2141 Third Duloch mobilized 50 million men to launch a surprise blitzkrieg invasion of VlaRiSsiA. The Green Army only had 20 million troops stationed on the VlaRiSsiAn-Dulochian Border, and would be overwhelmed quickly by the superior technology of the Dulochians. The Green Army, with 170 million total personnel at the time, was disorganized due to the lack of commanders and was scattered across VlaRiSsiA. It took months to even mobilize a portion of their strength. The 50 million strong Juggernaut that was the Dulochian Army blazed through Swampoland and the Balkans, showing no mercy. Millions of VlaRiSsiAn troops were captured and sent to death camps. A brutal genocide aimed at exterminating half of VlaRiSsiA’s population was ordered by Fuhrerquaad himself. Death camps popped up and tens of millions of undesirables and Ogres were rounded up and executed. As more land was occupied, more troops would be added to the advanced Dulochian Empire.

By 2142, the Dulochian army was able to almost completely push back the green army out of Europe. They already began sieging Shrekstanbul and Suez, preparing for the invasion of the Middle East. Significant portions of occupied territories’ populations would be killed and Eastern Europe became a death factory. The Green Army could only send a portion of its strength at a time, which would be killed or captured by the capitalist swine. For a moment, the size of the Green Army decreased with so many tens of millions of casualties happening.

The war reached its peak in November 2142, with The Dulochian Military right behind to swampskow. They have already invaded the Caucasus and anatolia, preparing to surround the Shrekist capital. It was at this point when Fuhrerquaads forces were spread thin and the Green Army was able to mobilize its full capacity. Through human waves and sheer numbers, Shrek pushed back the 10 million strong army that was raiding swampskow and started to push the Thurd Duloch back. As the Green Army liberated territories, they saw horrors that rivaled Shrek’s most notorious atrocities. Entire cities were wastelands, with entire communities being exterminated in killing fields. Mass graves of hundreds of thousands were uncovered and millions of starving ogre’s were liberated from execution facilities. Some cities were littered in bodies and others completely annihilated. Famines ravaged occupied land, and starving civilians were found being forced to eat their dead relatives. The liberations of POW camps were also horrific, with VlaRiSsiAn soldiers being starved and burned alive. Of the 20 million captured POWs, only 3 million survived.

Angered by the horrors committed against his empire, Shrek ordered his own atrocities. He ordered half of every Dulochian POWs to be burned alive in flame throwers. Massacres were perpetrated against liberated cities and captured Dulochian troops were crucified. The VlaRiSsiAn POWs who survived the death camps would be executed for treason. As the Green Army invaded the Third Duloch with a 200 million strong army, massacres against ethnic Dulochians would be orchestrated to avenge the unimaginable numbers of Ogres murdered. Tens of millions of Dulochians were killed in the invasion campaign. The Green Army invaded the rest of Europe by the end of 2145, ending the most horrific war in human history.

100 million VlaRiSsiAns, including 60 million civilians, were slaughtered in the war. Entire regions lost half of their pre-war population and cities were leveled. 1 out of every 9 VlaRiSsiAns died. If we were to have a minute of silence for each Ogre killed by the corporatist pig-dog that is Fuhrerquaad, we would be silent for 200 years.

Between 2135 and 2145, over 160 million VlaRiSsiAns were killed, not including the countless millions being executed or killed in gulags.

Chinese civil war

[Cosmic Unity Church]

The Cosmic Unity Church won the war with the Galactic Confederation of Free Nations, doubling it's size by assimilating vast territory once held by the said confederation. To quickly assimilate all the recently occupied territories, the High Priest gave free reign to the Inquisition and the militias, which led to a number of species perceived as "naturally infidel" being outright massacred in a heinous mass genocide.

The Cosmic Unity Church sanctioned the estabelishment of a special regime in the new territories that estabelished one golden rule: "Convert yourself to the one true faith or die". This led to mass convertions and mass executions of those who refused to bow to the Cosmic Unity Churrch. Horrifying reports of heinous human rights abuses by the forces of the Cosmic Unity Church were delivered to the rest of the galaxy, which coordinated to welcome the terrified refugees who fled the C.U.C's reign of terror. Finnally, the threat of foreign intervention and the pacification of the new territories brought an end to the mass terrorism.

1914 to 2010
This whole time period was a total shit storm of bad luck for Calva because , firstly in 1914 in place of the first world war there was the peoples uprising which saw the king removed and exiled and a civil war followed shortly after as all the factions now free from the monarchy they resented went to war with each other vying for dominance over the now leaderless state. In 1918 after 4 years of civil war The Calvan Comunist Party the very same faction who started the civil war finally gained complete control after 4 years of on and off control of the nation. Their long tyrannical reign of 77 years up until the dissolution of the Peoples Republic of Calva in 1995, during these 77 years the people who had once belived that their uprising would lead them to freedom from the oppression of a king, realised that upon revolting they had done nothing more than land them self in the lap of a new group of tyrants. Much was lost to this era of the red terror.

Then after 77 years of rule the impossible happened the red giant fell in 95, after a power struggle and much instability within the party coupled with the fact the economy was ruined by the ever growing tumour of corruption that had grown with in the party ever since the 60's, The Peoples republic crumbled on July 9th after the old white guard stormed the State HQ and offered a ultimatum to the frail and dying state, Under the Accords of the great exile the then Premier,Valantis Kalyvas signed the document that was the final nail in the coffin for the once mighty Calvan communist state. After the collapse of the old government there was a interim government put in place to try and prop up the now ruined nation, This quickly became a mouthpiece for the more vocal and militant right wing groups who seized power and tried to force the broken country in to military rule. This brute force attempt to bully a weary and resentful populace back under control of just another dictatorship backfired greatly and sent the fragile nation spiralling back in to a second civil war from the winter of 1995 to the spring of 2007.

At the end of another gruelling civil war it looked like for once the luck of the nation had changed for the better as a band of Rebublicans lead by Brajko Rakočević managed to win over the nation and reunited is divided people thus ushering the nation in to 3 years of short lived but glorious peace as the Republic of Calva, Sadly this peace was short lived as on the after noon of October 28th 2010 Brajko Rakočević was shot dead by a police officer during an after noon council assembly, shortly after a coup was declared and the combined forces of the army and police took control of the nation forcing back in to the iron chains and shackles of a dictatorship under the iron fist of a former police chief Dimitrios Nikolopoulos who has declared him self the absolute and only ruler of Calva. The reason for this sudden uprising is still shrouded slightly in conspiracy theories claiming that it was not Brajko Rakočević who caused it but an inside job, and there are others who it claim it was down to the fact Brajko Rakočević and his other council members felt that there a need to weaken to military and police so no more civil wars could happen and thus sowed the seeds of dissatisfaction and resent with in the police and army

The darkest time in Deacarsic history most likely was the Black Death, though the Thirty Years’ War also was very devastating to the kingdom.

Deacarsia also became somewhat of an international pariah following the end of the Second World War for reasons similar to Spain.

September 1942- March 1943, The Siege of Uzbelzk

Casualties: 51 thousand soldiers, 64 thousand civilians, total of 115 thousand deaths. 41 thousand men died in the push of Spring Uzbelzk.

In 1942, Germany steamrolled Santa Selena all the way into Uzbelzk. Where a siege was made, supplies ran low and soon people starved. Morale was low and soon went lower. It was a truly terrible time in Selenan History.

[Broader Confederate States]

Officially, the 1861-66 American Civil War. One of the bloodiest conflicts in American history. However, some historians and political scientists refute this claim, under the view that the Confederacy of the 1860s and the Confederacy of 2040 on are two separate entities. As such, the darkest time generally accepted by historians is that between 2016 and 2039. High levels of civil unrest easily comparable to a war, alongside oil rationing that radically changed people's lives overnight, completely killed several industries, and all in all could have been handled a lot better. With relative poverty spreading throughout the 20s and 30s, many relying on sustenance farming without income while still being expected to pay property tax, much of society adopting a 1930s or 1940s zeitgeist, and cultural tensions mounting, it was all around a bad time to live. The only reason it ended in 2039 was the Ordinance of Partition, which formed the second Confederacy.

About 250 years ago: Ko-oren was isolationist, to an extent, and fell further behind nearby nations with each passing season. Technologically and economically, the country fell back and was forced to give up several trading posts on our own soil, as well as several islands in the wide Salamantic Sea that are definitely not closer to their current owners (if they're not independent yet).

Yawkland's "dark times" are considered to be the 1930s and 1940s. For two decades, the nation struggled with economic decline, the the increased strength of hostile foreign powers, and widespread social dysfunction, including high rates of drug abuse and alcoholism. Things recovered in the 1950s.

The 1970s are also considered to be a dark time, though the economy was prospering. The reason is because the nation was wracked by terrorism emanating out of neighboring Clogheen.

The late 2010s and early 2020s are also considered to be a dark time due to the economic stagnation and destabilized geopolitical situation in Elchland that led to the outbreak of the Second Elchland War.

That was the month when NATO and the Warsaw Pact started intervening in the Durrnilian War for Reunification. American soldiers, Soviet soldiers, British soldiers, and soldiers from more countries started fighting on their respective side; Islandia for NATO, Hàmen and Shæsk for the Warsaw Pact, and Non-Aligned (later NATO) for Orbí.

There was testing of atomic bombs by NATO on the outlying islands of Islandia, and the Soviet Union sent in some advanced battleships and aircraft carriers. 1,362 innocent civilians got killed in the next 3 years. The archipelagos of Greater Islandia and Shísk were in a state of turmoil and economic distress.

1980-2010, known as the dark 30. a period of on and off war with a fascist theocracy, conventional and unconventional combat were frequently exchanged, with considerable nuclear threat which created an atmosphere of anxiety. over the course of the conflict, 800,000 Crysukon soldiers lost their lives, with a similar amount of civilians lost to terror bombing, massacres and other atrocities. The conflict ended in Winter of 2010 with Operation Providence, a commando raid supported by a cell of ideological sympathisers sabotaged their highly centralised missile defence network with a virus.

We erased them. every last one of their cities was struck with a 1MT warhead, with countless other targets to not only cripple them, but to completely wipe them from the face of the Earth. They lost, but we didn't win. There was no glory, no elation. Chief of armed forces Ajit Sangh still suffers highly distressing nightmares about it to this day, his Diazepam and Fluoxetine prescriptions are diligently kept. President Diane Newton, known as a charismatic populist, who released the launch codes is a known recreational drug users thereafter. Nobody questions it. Lastly, the Crysukon people as a whole don't speak of it outside of history classes.

It's our stigma, our crime, our cross to bear. There are no excuses, every insult and judgement is deserved.

[North Borneo]

1941 – 1945: Japanese occupation of North Borneo

The Japanese invasion of North Borneo took place in late-1941. By early-1942 the Japanese forces quickly overwhelmed the small Allied forces present in North Borneo. The British Governor of North Borneo surrendered on 19 January followed by the remaining Allied forces in the rest of Borneo on 1 April.

Japanese military rule was notoriously brutal. Thousands of people – military and civilian – were interred in prisoner of war camps where they were routinely starved, beaten, tortured, and killed. The Japanese also forced POWs into slave labour and death marches, where thousands of prisoners would be made to march for hundreds of kilometres through jungle, swamps and mountains without adequate provisions or supplies. Those collapsing from exhaustion were shot where they fell.

Of the nearly 5,000 people held in Japanese prisoner of war camps, only 1 in 4 survived.

Civilian life was heavily regulated and non-Japanese businesses and companies were shutdown or taken over. Personal property and all vehicles were seized. Many poor or middle class families went bankrupt. Wages, food and other resources were also taken over by the Japanese military, with anyone smuggling or stealing being punished with death.

A resistance to Japanese rule was born almost overnight, though the punishments for being found aiding and abetting were severe, including torture and death. When searching for resistance groups, the Japanese would often round up and slaughter entire villages.

The occupation came to an end with the liberation of North Borneo by Australian forces beginning on 10 June 1945. On 15 August 1945, Japan formally surrendered with Japanese forces in North Borneo surrendering on 9 September 1945. North Borneo returned to British rule from 12 September with war crimes trials taking place from December. The commander of the Japanese forces within North Borneo, as well as the commanders of the POW camps, were all sentenced to death and hanged for war crimes between 1946 and 1947.

The occupation left a mark on North Borean society for a generation, with many openly expressing hostility to Japan, its citizens, companies and boycotting its products. Relations in the following decades vastly improved and both nations consider themselves firm allies. Nevertheless, 15 August continues to be marked as Liberation Day in North Borneo.

Joija's darkest time is certainly the Joijan Civil War which went on from 1942-1966. It led to the Province of Kalistria (an autonomous zone, almost like Hong Kong) becoming its own separate nation. 120,000 civilians died and millions more went "missing".

The majority French-speaking Kalistrian government has since made peace, but before 1994, there were over 1,400 terrorist incidents involving Kalistrian nationalists from 1919-1993. There have been no Kalistria-related terrorist incidents since 1997. The war started when far-right nationalist dictator Thomas Beaucomp (big fan of a certain Austrian man) became Provincial Leader of Kalistria and the Joijan government, including President Gregory Stansfield, tried to oust him. Turns out Kalistrians did NOT like that, so they rebelled. Most Kalistrians were not fans of that Austrian man, but they were also not fans of being bossed around by a government who, to an extent, didn't give much of a crap about Kalistria after it got almost wiped off the map by Japan.

Disclaimer: There really hasn't been a 'dark era' or 'darkest time' per-se in Monsone, but the following is what came closest to that.

1950-1980
The Kamplehoftk Era

In 1950, Frederick Mierec lost the election to the former general turned politician Frederick Kamplehoftk. Initially, Kamplehoftk followed the rules and laws of Monsonian democracy. And from 1950 to 1960 (Kamplehoftk's first two terms), it was like any other presidential era, except increased economic growth thanks to a post-WW2 economic miracle. It would be in 1960 really when the downward spiral began.

In 1960 the Communist Party was banned after a huge may day rally, and in 1960, Kamplehoftk began his third term by begining mass repressions of communists. This also was the begining of the end for close relations with the USSR. In 1965, Kamplehoftk was reelected again, but this time there where widespread allegations of voter fraud that Kamplehoftk used as a excuse to crack down on pro-communist ogranizations again. While this allwent on, the Monsonian economy kept growing and living standards continued to increase rapidly. So it's almost paradoxical, crackdowns occured and democracy erroded away, but people didn't care much at the moment because everyone was doing well economically.

Similarly, 1970 was arepeat of 1965. But Kamplehoftk's facre ended in 1975 when it was clear his party hadn't won the election. Hence, parliament began the removal process for Kampelhoftk. In retaliation, martial law was delcared, and Kamplehoftk became a near didtator for the next five years. But in 1979, parliament defied martial law, and removed Kamplehoftk. However the move was stuck down by the Prime Minister (Tony Falragen) on the grounds that it would be "destabilizing." In 1980, Kamplehoftk clearly lost the election. There was no way to falsify the results, it was clear, Kamplehoftk's term was over.

In the latter years, many officilas who participated in the crackdowns and other illegal acts on Kamplehoftk's orders where tried and sentenced to jail. But not Kamplehoftk since he had been given immunity in 1980 by interim president Tony Falragen. The total toll of the Kamplehoftk era is 52.437 dead, 356.987 arrested on false charges, 13.681 extrajudicial killings, and 1.157 dissapeared people who's fate is still unknown.

The Empire's darkest time has yet to come

The Second Great Crusade (2057-2067) was not fought offensively, but rather defensively. The Enemy flooded out from the Outer Arm and went on a bloody warpath towards the Throneworld. The Empire was unable to stop the Enemy onslaught as Apollyon's Armies laid siege to Terra. Despite Imperial victory, millions of planets including the Throneworld lay in ruins. It would take a century for the Empire to recuperate.
