What does your flag mean?

by Kaigane
The flags of nations carry heavy weight - after all, it's the most basic representation of what your country stands for. Some countries flags are used for propaganda, such as the Soviet Union, whose flag represented the blood of the worker, the tools used by the worker, and the five continents where the workers will rise. Most countries flags have symbolism that can depend on the viewer, such as France, whose flag represents the union of Paris and the Revolution, but can also be interpreted to represent the people being divided by the monarchy. Some flags were chosen to represent the history of the nation, such as the United States, whose flag represents the 13 colonies that made up the nation's beginnings and the 50 states it now has. Whatever the origin, flags are made to invoke patriotism and identification.

That being said, what weight does your banner carry? What does your flag mean, and stand for?

The flag of Kaigane represents the opposite of Japan's - the sun setting, as it is far to the west of the world. The waves represent the ocean, and the red disk represents the setting sun.

The Crosshairs is meant to represent Starrden as a whole. The black represents our dark past while the white represents our bright future. The cross specifically represents the United Kingdom and the Star is, well, Starrden.

The white on our flag, as the dominant color, represents defiance, sincerity and transparency of our actions, as well as our willingness and determination to uphold these and other ideals symbolized by the flag.
The green stands for the constructive approach and freedom of thought, but it may symbolize our natural beauty and green policies.
The compass rose, which is stolen at the moment but may reappear, represents the western ideals of the Enlightenment and our intention to carve and pave the way to the better future so that any nation (including ours!) may navigate and benefit.

The black is for the metal that makes our armor, the red is for the blood we shed on the field of battle, the blue is for the lightning that represents our military, and the Thunderbird represents our fierce territoriality.

The flag of Wochaystein is called the Grüner-Jagiellonian flag, and was chosen because of the simple choice of colors.

Diarcesia wrote:A vestigial theocratic empire with its emperor also head of its church, the colors were inspired by the house of Phönizien. The golden cross is for Christianity and the illumination of the word of God. The purple is the color of the Phönizien emperors, and it is a remembrance of the Holy Empire at its height. The orange background represents the intensity of their zeal, just like how the sunrise extinguishes the darkness. The emblem stands for their natural resources being blessed by the cleansing flame.

The star in the center of the flag represents the shift from capitalism to socialism, and the design behind represents the old ways. The red stripe going diagonally across the flag is a symbol of those who sacrificed themselves in the Onfandeen Civil War. The white represents the peace that has come following the death of both sides in the civil war.

Blue - The blue as used in the field of the flag is considered the traditional colour of Aikoland and has symbolised the monarchy and later the nation since at least the 14th century.

Fleur-de-lis - The three fleurs-de-lis are officially intended to symbolise Île-d'Aiko, Île-de-Saun, and Île-de-Boullién, the three states of Aikoland. However, they are also considered to symbolise the Catholic heritage of our nation and people. (A popular misconception is that they also symbolise the monarchy, as our nation's coat of arms also depicts three fleurs-de-lis on it, but the ones depicted on the coat of arms are in a different arrangement than on the flag, having two smaller ones on top and a larger one at the bottom rather than one large one at the top and two smaller ones on the bottom)

by Exxosia
The Flag of Exxosia features a stylized silhouette of an Exxosian Void Hawk – the national animal – looking over a field of stars symbolizing Exxosia's thirteen provinces. The white Void Hawk symbolizes purity, strength, and self-reliance as well as voluntary nurturing (Void Hawk's are fierce protectors of their broods and allies in the wild and dutiful companions in domestication). The four-pointed stars symbolizing each province stand for the four purposes of their function. The black background of the stars symbolize the long, antarctic season of no sunlight and how it is only when things are darkest do people shine their brightest. The red background behind the Void Hawk symbolizes both the blood spilt and the breaking dawn of a new era of peace for all citizens.

The three red stripes symbolize passion, charity, and tolerance. The three black stripes symbolize self-determination, liberty, and advancement in all things. Their color was chosen not out of direct meaning, but as a clean definition between the black and red background regions.

The green background represents the ever-present nature in our country, as well as the pristine environment that we have maintained painstakingly throughout the years. We have vowed to protect and favor the environment even if it means to slow down or reduce our economy output. We are proud to have an economy that relies on book publishing (made from sustainable trees, though most of them are now E-books) and Information Technology, with the old technology (such as phones and computers) having a pretty high recycling rate.

The heart in the middle represents our love, compassion, and friendliness for one another, with the pink colors strengthening this love to every single person in Valentine Z, regardless of race, language, gender, religion. Our goal is to ensure that each and everyone is treated fairly, and not to leave the weakest links and persons behind in their times of needs. A welfare state that takes care of its people. Inclusiveness also means that we are not exactly Politically Correct, but rather, it is simply a means to protect each other from discrimination.

by Union of Sovereign States and Republics
The flag of the USSR has had different meanings throughout the years.

From the first draft of the flag of the USSR in 1924, the red represented the Paris Commune, the Hammer and Sickle represented industry and agriculture, and the Red Star represented communism.

The modern version of the flag was adopted in 1992. The red represents the blood spilled in the Russian Civil War and the Great Patriotic War, and the Hammer and Sickle represents industry and agriculture.

National flag
  • The six-star circle represents each of the states that make up the republic.
  • The centre star represents the unity of the federation [although since 1900 can also refer to the capital's territory - for a real-world example, think DC].
  • The blue background represents the north Atlantic ocean which surrounds the country.
  • The white stripes represent the uninterrupted peace that the nation has enjoyed since time immemorial.
  • The red stripes represents the popular uprising of 1643, which overthrew the then-extant monarchy & replaced it with one of the world's first republics.

Governmental flag
  • This flag has the same features as the official flag; however, the semicircle of stars have been replaced with the national coat of arms, which depict the original four states of the federation.

The black in the flag shows that all those who will try to disrupt the kingdom's peace shall succumb to defeat just as black absorbs all color. It can also be used to symbolize the union of the Germanic States again with the "black absorbs all color" and a nod to the Teutonic Knights of the past. The white symbolizes humility and honor and the coat of arms represents the royal family.

The background on which the coat of arms rests upon is the old civil flag of Prussia which symbolizes the her role as the unifier of the nation and is also meant to symbolize the democracy which has come to replace the old-fashioned absolute monarchy which, if kept, would've led the realm to ruin.

The coat of arms was originally the Hohenzollern eagle. However, when Austria was incorporated into the Federation, they decided to revert back to the older coat of arms which hints to the old Holy Roman Empire.

The current flag was adopted in 1935, and replaced the previous Imperial flag which was identical to the current one, but with the Imperial Coat of Arms.

The blue symbolizes the rivers of Monsone as well as righteousness and the Imperial history of Monsone. The blue is also a symbolism for hard work, intelligence, and honor.

The white symbolizes justice and equality along with the white of the winter snow that is common in Monsone. White also is symbolic of King Rustal, the founder of Monsone since his battle standard was a white flag with his crest in the center.

The red symbolizes struggle as well as the blood of those who died defending Monsone. Red is also the traditional color of Monsonian republicanisim.

The current flag of Garya is based on a flag representing the chief kingdom of the historical kingdoms that made up Garya, St. Josephsburg ,which had a red cross on yellow. The 4 red panels were later added to represent the union of the kingdoms, as well as the determination of the people to defend Garya with their blood. The royal coat of arms were also added later as the state flag.
Previous to this, the flag of the occupying Tyrants was used on all government buildings until the Great Revolution which liberated Garya. Various flags were used, but Congress voted on using the traditional flag, minus the royal coat of arms, as the national flag.

Our flag was originally used by anti-soviet guerrillas during WWII and during the cold war. During WW2 guerrillas sided with the fascists when they declared war against the Soviet Union but were planning to turn against them after they didn’t need their help anymore. The group was instantly silenced by the Red Army but returned in the late 1980s when the Soviet Union was at it’s weakest. The flag was originally red in the middle and had black stripes on the top and bottom. The red stood for the blood of innocents spilled by the oppressive government, the star meant that it was a military group, and the three stripes stood and still stands for Slavic heritage. After the Soviet Union split up, Dzigerski adopted the flag used by the guerrillas. In 2008, the elected “president” changed and repurposed the flag since it’s a country now and not a rebellion. The red in the middle was changed to black which represents the bravery of the anti-soviets, the star now means freedom, and the green stripes represent the lush and plentiful forests.

Green and blue have long been colours used by the first city states of the archipelago. Most cities used one of these two colours, and a handful used both at the same time, in various configurations. The fact that there are 4 corners comes from us having 4 capital cities. The yellow cross was later added to tell them apart easier, as well as representing some of the later additions to the country.
