Alternative Calendar in your Nation.

Postby State of Turelisa » Sat Apr 11, 2020 5:07 pm

Has your nation alternative names for days and months? Is its calendar year of unequal length to the Gregorian year?

After the establishment of the Theonomic State of Turelisa in 1820, the Gregorian calendar, whose days and months were almost all namesakes of pagan deities and heathen festivals, was considered unacceptable in a society which was fundamentally religious. It was replaced with a system of twelve months and seven days whose names almost all derive from Latin and Greek ordinal numerals.
The exceptions are 'DecadiTide', which derives from French, 'PaschalTide', the month of Lent and the observance of the Crucifixion and Resurrection, 'Midsommar', an alternative name for June when the season of summer is at its peak, 'September', a word that has no pagan denotation nor is a derivative of a Roman Emperor namesake, is retained and once again becomes the appellation of the seventh month, and 'TwelveTide', an alternative name for the twelfth month when the festival of the Nativity is observed.
Each of the names for the months are combined with the affix -Tide., a synonym for 'month.'

1 ProtoTide
2 DeuteroTide
3 TritoTide
4 Paschaltide
5 EmptTide
6 MidsommarTide
7 Jacobatide
8 OctTide
9 NonusTide
10 DecadiTide
11 EndecaTide
12 DozenthTide

1 Sunday
2 Monday
3 Jonsday ( John the Baptist is venerated on Tuesdays )
4 Midday
5 Quintday
6 Piscisday ( Piscis is Latin for fish; it is a Christian tradition to eat only fish on Fridays )
7 Septday

Alternative Calendar in your Nation

Postby Deacarsia » Sat Apr 11, 2020 6:31 pm

The Kingdom of Deacarsia follows the Gregorian calendar, which was adopted on the Ides of October in Anno Domini 1582. Most Deacarsi still reckon the date in the Roman style, using Kalends, Nones, and Ides, but otherwise the calendar is the same.

In the Deacarsic language, the months have the following names:

1 Enar
2 Febra
3 Mart
4 Apreil
5 Beltane
6 Mihem
7 Ul
8 Lunasat
9 Manfobar
10 Derafuwar
11 Savin
12 Notlic

In zeganas because of how our planet is, we have a 320.58 day year, leading to interesting leap days, like one every 2 years and one every 12.5 years, and most of our weeks are 9 day weeks with a few being 8 day weeks.

The 9 days of the week are Newday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Middleday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Latterday.

We primarily use the Gregorian calendar, but will print the Toinan year (year since independence) on government documents occasionally. The Gregorian calendar switches over on January 1st, while the Toinan calendar switches over on July 27th. There are no days of the week in the Toinan calendar, it only measures years.

It is 2020 CE, but also the year 172 in the independence of Toin. On July 27th, it becomes the year 173 in the independence of Toin.

OOC: On a related note, the date as of posting this is 4/11 and always is the same as in the real universe.

Great Nortend predominantly uses a civil calendar which officially begins on the 1st of October. It is divided into four terms : Michaelmas term, Christmas term, Ladymas term and St. John's term. Christmas term is also known as Epiphany term in academic use or Hilary term in legal use. Ladymas term is also known as Whitsun term or Easter term, although Easter does not always fall within it. St. John's term is also known as Johnmas term, or Marymas term or Midsummer term.

Socially, the civil calendar begins on the 29th of October on Michaelmas day. However, since the promulgation of the Determination of Years and Terms Act 2 Edm. VI p. 34, in 1569, the terms legally begin on the first day of the month after the traditional date. The periods of time between the traditional date and the official date are known as the antecalends. The Church of Nortend's liturgical calendar also begins on Michaelmas.

The civil calendar is three months earlier than the Gregorian calendar. Thus the civil year 2020 began on the 1st of October of the Gregorian year 2019.

Government agencies and public schools in the Wiccan Israel use the Holocene calendar (the current year is 12020 HE). The Gregorian calendar is Christocentric and distorts the view of our own history as humans.

We have two main calendars. The first one is a civil calendar with days of around 78793.2 seconds. These days are organised into 8 day weeks with 4 forming a month. 8 months form a short year, and 12 months form a long year. The days of the weeks, the week of the month and the month of the year are not named, but they are numbered starting from 0. No particular day is marked as a general rest, though typically the first day of the week (day 0) is used as a day off by some.

The second one is a calendar currently only used for some holidays. It features days that are 87221.72 seconds, organised into months that on average are 28.42071 days long, and years that are on average 12.68122 months long. The two alternate in length between 28/29 or 12/13, so months by default are 28 days long, then extra days are added "as needed" to keep the average, while years are 12 months by default, then extra months get added "as needed" to keep the average. There's also a third kind of year with 360.409276 days that alternate between 360 and 361 days in a similar fashion. The month is divided into either 4 7 day weeks or 3 7 day weeks and an 8 day week. The days of the week do not have names. Months however do have names: Deiume, Pluduiāme, Uirunome, Perquonome, Paūromme, Urome, Soūlme, Mēmme, Concāpne, Manome, Ēmome, Tritme and Queme.

Our archaic calendar was a 12/13-month lunisolar calendar, with months measured from new moon to new moon, and a 13th leap month, Hlydamonað, added between Hreþemonað and Eastermonað when necessary to make Eastermonað start on the first new moon after the spring equinox. The new year was reckoned to begin on Bældæg, the cross-quarter day between the spring equinox (Easter) and the summer solstice (Liþa or Midsumor).

This turns out to be a huge pain the butt to calculate, with months synced to the actual moon cycle varying a day or two in length from year to year, and years differing in length by up to 30 days, with the timing of all of the months drifting by up to a full month before being realigned by the insertion of the leap month. Minor disagreements about astronomical observations could result in different people's opinions about what day it was being a month apart. And things like folcgemot and the beginning and end of rental periods, tax and tithing periods, and so on, traditionally happened on the quarter days, anyway, and what day those fell on in the lunisolar calendar could vary wildly.

So during our fœderati days, the Eahlcynn adopted the 365.25-day Columban solar calendar, but continued to use our traditional names for the months and days of the week, and count the new year as beginning on Bældæg, which was fixed to the 1st of Þrimilcemonað (Maius). The 1st of Æftergeol was fixed to the Columban new year on 1 Ianuarius, and Hlydamonað was dropped entirely.

And then various Columban emperors decided it would be a good idea to rename months after themselves (to be fair, the Columbans weren't very creative, and most of their month names were just like "Seventh", "Eighth", and so on anyway), and steal days from other months to make "their" months bigger. So our months not only had different names, but were out of sync with the Columban months, and the beginning of our year was reckoned four months later - and because of that, our leap day was the end of Weodmonað rather than Solmonaþ, so how out of sync varied with the leap year. And then there were a couple of realignments to adjust for leap year drift.

So our current calendar is a 365.2425-day solar calendar with 12 months of 30 or 31 days, where the months have different names and are out of sync with the Columban months for 10 months of the year, and our counting of the year lags behind for a third of the year - we still have a couple weeks left in 2019 as I write this.

Our full calendar, including the current Eahlisc-reckoning date, can be found in our larboc.

Despite being located on another planet, the official length of a day and year on Mercury is identical to that on Earth. There being 24 hours in a day and 365 days in a year. This was done because, if the natural Mercurian day and year were used for timekeeping, there would only be one day for every two years (Mercury has a 3:2 spin-orbit resonance and only fully rotates three times for every two orbits around the sun)

However, while the length of the year is the same as on Earth, the Mercurian calendar is not the same as any Earth-based calendars.

The Mercurian calendar is divided into nine months, with the first eight months having forty days each and the ninth month having forty-five days.

The nine months of the Mercurian calendar are:
- Junia
- Kleptio
- Miru
- Oenti
- Dairu
- Klipe
- Jainus
- Muirua
- Diean

In addition, our week is eight days long and not seven, with the days of the Mercurian week being:
- Kinei
- Tuinei
- Relonei
- Kirinnei
- Duosnei
- Ribinei
- Teironei
- Diesnei

In Mercurian, 'nei' simply means 'day' and the first part of each day of the week is simply the numbers from one to eight in our language.

The standard printable 2023 calendar used in the rest of the world, along with your regular 24 hour day with 60 minutes and 60 seconds.

In the past, when we were a monarchy, we had an alternate calendar that counted years starting with the establishment of the monarchy as year 1 that was used alongside the Gregorian calendar, but that calendar hasn't been used in almost 120 years, since we have long ceased being a monarchy.

The Most Serene Republic uses a calendar that has lasted in an unaltered form for over twenty-two centuries. Twelve months of thirty days each, with five special single day periods, encapsulate our 365-day year. The main difference between our calendar and the one that is more well known, our year begins when Autumn turns into Winter.

Focis Æternum / Eternal Hearth (1): Our version of New Year's Day.
Gelumensis / Frost Month (30): November
Frigumensis / Cold Month (30): December
Vetumensis / Old Month (30): January
Fons Vernum / Spring Fountainhead (1): First day of Spring.
Nixmensis / Snow Month (30): February
Corvumensis / Raven Month (30): March
Piscimensis / Fish Month (30): April
Æstate Excelsum / High Summer (1): First day of Summer.
Scutum Contio / Shield Meet (1): Special leap day, added almost every four years, based upon stellar calculations, much like the Gregorian Calendar.
Lacmensis / Milk Month (30): May
Fragumensis / Strawberry Month (30): June
Fænumensis / Hay Month (30): July
Auctumnem / Harvest Bounty (1): First day of Autumn.
Balenamensis / Sturgeon Month (30): August
Titicumensis / Grain Month (30): September
Venatormensis / Hunter Month (30): October
Extinctum Flamma / Hearth Break (1): Last day of the year, celebrated with the symbolic extinguishing of Hestia's eternal flame at sundown on the longest night of the year.

The year calendar is maintained in sixteen forms, 8 regular and 8 leap, because the length of an MSR year is actually eight days. The standard seven day week that most people know is joined by an eighth Market Day. Each day is recorded with its Latin west, Greek east, and Anglophone names...though we switch Sunday and Monday. The symbology is that market day ties the day to the night, just as Hestia's New Year's Eve and Day ties years done to years to come.

Nundies / Nundidi (Market Day)
Helidies / Hemera Heliou (Helios Day) / Sunday
Enudies / Hemera Enuo (Enyo Day) / Tuesday
Hermdies / Hemera Hermou (Hermes Day) / Wednesday
Athdies / Hemera Athenae (Athena Day) / Thursday
Eridies / Hemera Eri (Eros Day) / Friday
Promedies / Hemera Promethei (Prometheus Day) / Saturday
Seledies / Hemera Selenes (Selene Day) / Monday
"Hello, Masaki home. Oh, that sounds like if I were married to the family. How embarrassing. What do you think? Do you think it sounds that way?"

"I have been many things in my life, Mollari. I have been silly. I have been quiet when I should have spoken. I have been foolish. And I have wasted far too much time. But I am still Centauri. And I am not afraid."

"You are elevating futility to a high art. There is nothing you can do to prevent the catharsis of spurious morality."
