I'd argue 20mm was fast enough.

Night fighters used radar.

Some sort of vicious bird of prey would be good.

What made a night fighter pre night vision?

Night fighters (the successful ones anyhow) were two seaters. They could normally carry primitive radar and had someone to operate it. Otherwise it was the standard fighter but painted black and if the pilot was lucky, the exhaust would be adapted so it wouldn't blind him.

How these radars worked? I guess not the "nicely display enemy position and velocity on a confy screen" way. O? Again my ignorance is deep regarding aircraft.
Flash supressors on armament?(Suppressors on schrage musik ;) I gues there weren't but could it be done?

As for the name I'm torn between Thunderbird and Steelhawk.

EDIT:Fishcer what are those? 75mm?

Thats not something one would be intmidated by. Or what would be appropriate for something packing as much hurt as a pair of light tanks while flying around with 600km/h.

The pilots are not supposed to be intimidated by the name, they're supposed to be intimidated by the plane so much they make up scarier names for it.

Fw 190- Butcherbird etc.

It worked adversely too.

No, I mean 4 x 20mm autocanons.

Also, my modern day fighter is called Skeletor. How is that for a scary name?

Purpelia does not reflect my actual world views. In fact, the vast majority of Purpelian cannon is meant to shock and thus deliberately insane. I just like playing with the idea of a country of madmen utterly convinced that everyone else are the barbarians. So play along or not but don't ever think it's for real.

What, like this Spitfire?

Post 41 all models could accept either 8x .303, 4x .303 and 2x 20mm, 2x .50 and 2x20mm or 4x20mm in the universal wing design.

Too little too late. Post 41 my air force would already be replacing the original aircraft with a brand new fighter. And that one has a Napier Sabre powering it. So it gets 6 x 20mm for fun.

Like the Hawker Typhoon?

1941.

The earliest cannon Spits fought in the Battle of Britain.

6 20mm sounds like a heavily armed brick.

Thats just overkill. more ammo and 4, but faster cannons would be better.

Not like the typhoon. It quite literally is a typhoon with a 30mm up its nose.
And I will probably have two variants, one with just 4x20mm for use as a fighter and one with 6x20mm for ground attack.

how do you have a 30mm up its nose with that engine design?

Any engine can have a nose mounted gun. It's a function of having a thicker drive shaft and nothing more.
Also, when ever I cite a real world piece of equipment. I am actually talking about a comparable but homebrew design that happens to have some modifications to make it more fit for my own needs. It's just that much easier to do so than to write up every minute detail of every subcomponent.

But the whole engine has to be redesigned to cacomodate a thicker drive shaft, which in turn requires minor modifications of the airfame.

Intimidating, but not very airplanish. If you want something implying death go with Vulture perhaps?

It has nothing to do with death. The guy that was heading the design team produced an aircraft so good that the Arch Duke promised him the right to name it. And as he happens the guy was a Masters of the Universe fan.

I'd go with something like Reaper. Perhaps Deathhawk or some other combination of words that make it sound like an underworldly-bird-of-prey, if you're going for that like Aralon said.
What I generally do to test out a name for a design is to imagine the enemy screaming in fear of it, or imagine how they would speak about them being a menace to their war effort. "[Country X's] Wolves and Deathhawks are wreaking havoc to our lines!" Versus, "Oh no, it's the Teddy Bears!" The Teddy Bear could be a nuke-spewing machine of death, but it's name isn't exactly going to give you that sinking feeling or inspire emotions due to subconscious associations.

"Humanity is a way for the cosmos to know itself." - Carl Sagan
"Besides, if God didn't want us making glowing fish and insect-resistant corn, the building blocks of life wouldn't be so easy for science to fiddle with." - Dracoria

Why haven't I had anything new in my storefront for so long? This is why. I've been busy.

Actually the latter would comply with my naming conventions rather well. I tend to take these things on the lighter side. Like for example the name of my anti infantry mines translates literally to "leg/foot biter". And all my tanks are officially designated as "armored gun carriers". Also, my IFV is called "Gargamel". And my nuclear forces have blue uniforms and wear smurf hats.
