When Islam became the official religion in 1822, laws regarding blasphemy against Islam were enforced. The enforcement stopped between 1828 and 1836 under a relatively secular government. Laws regarding blasphemy against Islam were once again enforced from 1836 to 1844. Laws regarding blasphemy against Christianity were enforced from 1865 to 1870, under a more religious government. Blasphemy laws were removed in 1870 as part of secularist reforms. Blasphemy was once again a criminal offence under the military dictatorship of 1886 to 1896, with the punishment being torture and then execution. Once the republic was restored in 1896, blasphemy laws were once again removed.

Article 90 of the constitution is as follows:
