Your nation's unique names

Postby Kalasion » Fri Apr 23, 2010 4:58 pm

Does your nation have any unique names?

Some of the ones in Kalasion are Khosem (male, from Khorata), Coowin (male, quiet), Coouine (female, quiet) and Otalci (female, prosperous).

Large number of our people are named Marx, Engels and Lenin, for some unknown reason. It is not uncommon to see Engels Chan or Lenin Watanabe.

Capitalism is always the answer. Whenever there's a problem in capitalism, you just need some more capitalism. If the solution isn't capitalism, then it's not really a problem. If your capitalism gets damaged, you just need to throw some capitalism on it and get on with your life.

Juksereen's strict laws on profane names was recently lifted so many names go as far as Sir Phucksalot.

The most common unique name is a middle name which still survives even after their nobility was removed; Dynia-Morgue

Another common unique name amongst the Juksereen is Mogranelite, and the very most common last name is Ukrelaine.

There really aren't any unique names, though "Griffin" and "Griffith" (both male names) are common, whereas most nations have hardly any people by those names. Here, they're the equivalent of John and Jack, respectively. Hostile forces have often called us "Griffin" (much like how Americans called NVA troops "Charlie," and were called "Johnny" themselves) as a nickname.

Due to our libertarian society, many citizens use names which are... let's just say, out of the ordinary.

I was quite worried when I visited an adoption centre last week in Tyrial and met a seven year old called Trashcan.

Thankfully, in 9 years he will be able to change his name by poll deed.

"Pacia" has been singled out as particularly Zwangzugian.

Our "names" are actually bits of melody, the last vestige of our spoken language. You don't pronounce them, you hum or whistle them.

A typical male Child's name sounds like this: ♫♫doremiredoremifamifalaso♫♫
A typical female Child's name sounds like this: ♫♪doremilasomirelasomidoredotilati♫♪

You can tell the difference because male names are in 4/4 time, female ones are in 3/4 time.

all names in cameroi are unique.
they are generated by rolling 8 sided die four times.
and looking up the result each time on tables.
alternating between consonants and vowels to insure the result is pronounceable.

(five for males is a local custom in some villages, so that male names in those villages end in a consonant. all names begin with one. the only exception to that are revealers of organized religions, who are invariably unique in other ways and often strange even by the customs of their own time).

this is done by parents before their child is born. this is called their birth name.
individuals then do so upon reaching the age of nine. this is called their self name and tends to be used by them the rest of their lives.

both namings are done as a sort of religious ritual, and often whole villages are involved.

anyone can re-roll their name of course, provided they gather witnesses to repeat the ritual.

each village maintains a register of names and checks each new name against it to avoid inadvertent duplication.

when a person moves to a new village, if someone there has the same name, they will use the name of the village where they were born as a locative.

thus geron born in lashudanu, at the end of his pujzhush, decides to settle in malathuvi.
as there is already a geron living in malathuvi who was born there, geron born in lashudanu goes by geron of lashudanu and geron born in malathuvi goes by geron of malathuvi.

there are no 'family' names or patri/matri-nymics as in those primative cultures dominant on earth.
this is because cameroi culture sees 'little me' syndrome as mentally and emotionally detrimental.

village and location names are generated similarly, except that 8 rolls are required to give then the necessary 4 syllables. and this is preformed by their first elected council at its first meeting, at which of course, a quorum must be present.
