The State of Iran"Independence, Freedom, and the Iranian Nation"
Welcome to Iran | Overview | Anthem | Retcon Underway | Set in: 1980

After the success of the Nojeh Coup; Iran becomes a transitional regency, hybrid (military) regime which clamps down on everything politically Islamic. Now suffering from an Afghan-like insurgency from the Quds and MEK, and intricate deep state politics between the Gang of Four.
The "Persagonian Republic" is a misnomer. We are a transitional regency.

Ettela'at News: Previous officials of the old IR regime including Abdolhassan Banisadr and Ali Rajai reported missing after the Qom Raid. Rumors are abound that the Islamists are assembling the Al-Quds opposition to wage jihad against the new govt.

Other relevant policies and/or laws: Sex-selective abortion is prohibited, but abortion is free, safe and legal under any other circumstances. Young women are strongly encouraged and incentivised to study and work in 'STEM' fields. All schools, colleges and universities are coeducational. Parental leave (A year on full pay and an optional year on half-pay) can be distributed between parents as they see fit. Discrimination on the basis of sex, gender, gender presentation and sexual orientation is illegal and can be enforced with large fines.

has your nation ever had a female head of state: no but we probably will in 2022 insha Allah (the heir-apparent is female)
Has your nation ever had a female head of government:
arguably during the "Sultanate of women" phase of the Ottoman Empire.
Percentage of women in the population:
74.5%
Percentage of women in...
Senior military officers: 4.5%
School headteachers/principals:
20.4%
Legislature or equivalent: 20% for the upper house (representing the nobles), 5% for the lower house (representing the commoners)
Judges:
5%
Police officers: 25.5%
Cabinet ministers:
20.5%
Senior academics:
12.5%
Religious leaders:
8%
Lawyers:
5%
Doctors:
25.5%
CEOs:
4.5%
Major landowners: 74.4% (often war-widows)
Percentage of women in the prison population:
0.5% of the prison population is female

Percentage of women amongst victims of murder:
2.5% of murder victims (more men are murdered due to cultural protectiveness of women,
most female murder victims are caught in flangrante delicto during the act of adultery)

Percentage of women amongst victim of sexual crime:
52.5% of sex crime victims are female
Are the punishments for crimes with predominantly female victims less severe than the punishment for other crimes of similar harm and blameworthiness?:
No, crimes like rape and sexual harassment, of which more of the victims are female than are punished more severely on average.
A violent crime like a mugging is punished more severely if the victim is a woman.

average Sentence for violent/sexual crimes with female victims:
5 years for a non-sexual violent crime,
10 years for a crime of sexual violence.
average sentence for violent or sexual crimes with male victims:
2.5 years for a non-sexual violent crime.
10 years for a sexual crime.
Does your nation support chivalry towards women?
Yes. Both public opinion and the government.
Does your nation support gender equality?
The Prince-Regent sort of does but he's fighting an uphill battle.

Are there any laws that only apply to women(if so what are they)?:
A woman cannot have more than one spouse.
Women cannot join the infantry.
Are there any laws that only apply to men(if so what are they):
Conscription,
husbands must provide for their wives and children financially,
only men can get the death penalty.
Do human rights laws apply to women?:
yes.
Other relevant policies and/or laws:
It is illegal to refuse to hire someone for most jobs because of their gender.
Female and male police officers can both be recruited but job opportunities are advertised separately.
Men and women can both rise to the same ranks in the Army they are just in separate battalions.
A nation which partly represents my views.

has your nation ever had a female head of state: yes
Has your nation ever had a female head of government: yes
Percentage of women in the population: 53% female, 47% male, this is at least partly due to the tendency of the previous matriarchal regime to abort male infants at times.
Percentage of women in...
Senior military officers: 31% (female officers from the former matriarchal regime had to be re-educated first, so as to prepare them for true gender equality)
School headteachers/principals: 40% (again, some had to experience re-education before being restored to their jobs)
Legislature or equivalent: 43%
Judges: 42%
Police officers: 32%
Cabinet ministers: 33%
Senior academics: 42%
Religious leaders: 48% (though leading clerics of the old matriarchal state religion are still undergoing re-education).
Lawyers: 45%
Doctors: 46%
CEOs: 34%
Major landowners: 21% (many prominent female public figures from the old regime had their personal estates expropriated by the State and redistributed to ordinary farmworkers).

Percentage of women in the prison population: 44% (including 65% of all residents of re-education camps)

Percentage of women amongst victims of murder: 31%

Percentage of women amongst victim of sexual crime: 56%

Are the punishments for crimes with predominantly female victims less severe than the punishment for other crimes of similar harm and blameworthiness?: no
average Sentence for violent/sexual crimes with female victims: death by electrocution
average sentence for violent or sexual crimes with male victims: death by electrocution

Does your nation support chivalry towards women? No. Chivalry is an outdated, un-egalitarian practice that subordinates men to women. Our re-education camps, as well as various public awareness/information campaigns, have made a point of shaming and condemning the custom of chivalry as contrary to equality, giving women fewer responsibilities and obligations to match their equal rights. Equal rights must mean equal duties and equal sacrifice. Gender equality and chivalry are seen as mutually exclusive. If chivalry exists, it comes at the expense of men's rights to equality.

Does your nation support gender equality? Yes. True equality, which has required us to undo the previous regime's discrimination against men.

Are there any laws that only apply to women(if so what are they)?: Only laws pertaining to pregnancy and female fertility, and those are very few. That and clerics of the old religion were exclusively female and they are still required to remain in their camps until fully re-educated.

Are there any laws that only apply to men(if so what are they): Only laws regarding vasectomies and the right to male potency drugs.

Do human rights laws apply to women?: Yes and to men as well.
Other relevant policies and/or laws: The old, matriarchal religion is still illegal and practicing it is punishable by death.

Socially quite liberal, economically a bit more authoritarian. Not a fan of organized religion or traditional family values or the present social order. You've been warned.

Other relevant policies and/or laws:
Women are generally discouraged from voting unless they can prove that they will vote with their heads and not with their hearts, many in Wardland view the issues and questionable leadership faced by much of the rest of the Western world as correlating with suffrage afforded to emotional and easily-swayed females, whether right or wrong. Voting has also long traditionally been held as a Man's duty, and not something a Lady should concern herself with.

Has your nation ever had a female head of state: It currently does. Serene Highnesses tend to be female because of Lanomiran women's perception and place in society.
Has your nation ever had a female head of government: There's no head of government per se, just one large body.
Percentage of women in the population: 51.2%

Percentage of women in...
Senior military officers: There is no military, only a special response force, of which the rate is 0.02% (there's exactly 7 females)
School headteachers/principals: 45%
Legislature or equivalent: 27%
Judges: 40%
Police officers: 2%
Cabinet ministers: No such thing?
Senior academics: 34%
Religious leaders: N/A
Lawyers: 23%
Doctors: 62%
CEOs: 39%
Major landowners: 14%

Percentage of women in the prison population: 24% (Edit: Wait, does this mean how many of the entire population in general are currently in prison, or how many people in prison are women? 24% refers to the latter, not the former....crime rate is extremely low in Lanoraie)

Percentage of women amongst victims of murder: 33%

Percentage of women amongst victim of sexual crime: 89%

Are the punishments for crimes with predominantly female victims less severe than the punishment for other crimes of similar harm and blameworthiness?: No.
average Sentence for violent/sexual crimes with female victims: It varies greatly depending on everything involving the case, so a rough average would be 14 years.
average sentence for violent or sexual crimes with male victims: See above, typically also 14 years.

Does your nation support chivalry towards women? It varies a little depending on the social circle, but typically men are quite chivalrous to women, and there is a strong emphasis on men in society to protect women physically and financially. (Of course, in the other ways too, but especially those ways) And in a give and take manner, women are expected to be chivalrous to men by protecting them emotionally and mentally. However, most Lanomirans will act in all of the above ways towards anyone, regardless of gender. Being considerate and polite is a staple of Lanoraie's society.

Does your nation support gender equality? In a sense, yes. Both sexes are highly valued and honored. The culture of men vs women is not much of a thing in Lanoraie. It is considered shameful to downplay the role many (but certainly not all) men and women choose to take in society; breadwinner and homemaker, respectively. It's also equally shameful to shame people who choose something else.

Are there any laws that only apply to women(if so what are they)?: Not really.

Are there any laws that only apply to men(if so what are they): Not really.

Do human rights laws apply to women?: Of course.
