average Sentence for violent/sexual crimes with female victims: anywhere from 5-20 years in a correctional system if charged with a sexual crime, though much higher if they were a minor. If it was murder, then they would be locked away in a cell for 25 years, as well as taking correctional courses.
average sentence for violent or sexual crimes with male victims: 4 years at the most in a correctional system if charged with a sex crime (though much, much higher if the male was a minor). If murder than the same punishment as above, though estimates may range from 15-25 years depending on the motive.

Does your nation support chivalry towards women? Many women here may find chivalry a bit strange, but yes.

Does your nation support gender equality? Yeah in the sense that women aren’t seen as a form of property, nor as subordinates nor the “weaker group”, though they are seen as different to men in some ways, except in Eastern Suhurbian cultures where society doesn’t see them as different and people are free to be themselves.

Are there any laws that only apply to women(if so what are they)?: Aside from stuff applying to pregnancy and motherhood, no

Are there any laws that only apply to men(if so what are they): no

Do human rights laws apply to women?: yes, though unlike many cultures Suhurbia never had a history of oppressing women. Human rights isn’t an issue here.
Other relevant policies and/or laws:
Not to be mistaken for Suburbia.

  1. Has your nation ever had a female head of state:
The current Captains-Regent (Françoise Aucoin (elected 2012, term ends 2020) and Mireille Ribault (elected 2016, term ends 2024)) are both women, the first time this has happened in Ausonian history. Aucoin also has the distinction of being elected the first female Captain-Regent in Ausonia, having been elected in 2012.
  2. Has your nation ever had a female head of government:
Before then, the first female Lord President was Georgette Auberjonois, appointed in 1987.
  3. Percentage of women in the population:
Generally, the sex ratio (male/female) is around 0.97 (Ausonia has a population around 146.86 million)
  4. Percentage of women in (listing various careers)...
      Generally, women comprise around:
      • 8% of all senior military officers (The Ausonian Armed Forces are an outlier when it comes to female representation, as apart from female volunteers (Women are excluded from conscription into the Army), men make the absolute majority in all branches of the Armed Forces)
      • 56% of all school administrators
      • 45% of all Senators[1] and 32% of all Peers[1]
      • 41% of all Judges
      • 47% of all officers (on the provincial/local police as well as the Sûreté fédérale (the federal gendarmerie))
      • 26% of all current members of the State Council (including the Speaker of the Senate, Elmire Aslane (an Ausonian Tatar))
      • 44% of all senior academics and university faculty
      • 39% of all lawyers and barristers
      • 72% of all doctors and nurses
      • 29% of all current CEOs of all companies listed in the BDS 100[2] index
Determination of religious leaders cannot be verified, as it is the sole purview of their respective churches. The census also does not keep track of land ownership by sex.

[1]that is, members of the House of Commons and House of Peers (the lower and upper houses of the Senate respectively)
[2]Bourse de Savonnes, the nation's primary stock exchange
  5. Percentage of women in the prison population:
Women make up around 21% of the total prison population
  6. Percentage of women amongst victims of murder/sexual crimes:
Female victims make up around 32% of the total murder rate (which at around 2.6 per 100,000 is among the lowest in Terramir) and around 65% of total sexual crimes
  7. Are the punishments for crimes with predominantly female victims less severe than the punishment for other crimes of similar harm and blameworthiness?:
Punishments are generally the same regardless of sex.
  8. Average Sentence for violent/sexual crimes with female victims:
Generally, the maximum sentence is a whole life order and permanent loss of civic trust (that is, the loss of the ability to vote and stand for election). They are virtually the same regardless of sex.
  9. Does your nation support chivalry towards women?
Chivalry in general isn't a guaranteed mandate under both the Constitution or federal and provincial law. It is however, a common courtesy for men to be respectful towards women.
  10. Does your nation support gender equality?
On the other hand, federal law does prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, sex, religion, national origin, ethnicity, or sexual preference.
  11. Are there any laws that only apply to women(if so what are they)?:
There are no statutes currently on the federal and provincial books that apply solely to women.
  12. Are there any laws that only apply to men(if so what are they)?:
By law, conscription to the Armed Forces applies to men, though women can join the Armed Forces if they so wish.
  13. Do basic human rights laws apply to women?:
      Under the Constitution, certainly.
  14. Other relevant policies and/or laws:
Federal law indeed does prohibit discrimination on the basis of gender. However, quotas as a whole do not exist, as general thinking is that the government (both federal and provincial) should not interfere in the affairs of any private institution (though incentives to admit more women certainly exist by popular demand)

average sentence for violent or sexual crimes with male victims: 26.2 years, but less likely to receive death penalty.

HER COURT OF BRELLACH

ImageImageImageImageImage

Brightest blessings;

It is the honour of this humble servant of the Magnificent and Beautiful, Wise and Powerful, Perfect and Almighty, Avatar of Her Divine Glory, Queen Lyta of Brellach, Her horses swift and Her blade true, to submit responses to the questions You and Yours wish to hear answers, on behalf of Her Favoured Children, Her Divine Glory, Her Divine Avatar, and in service to the ideals of international friendship and cooperation.

It is so that this humble servant has attached them to this letter in the layout stated:

Has your nation ever had a female head of state: All Divine Queens are female. Her Divine Avatar always visits upon us in this form.

Has your nation ever had a female head of government: Many of our Most Devout Advisors of Her Court have been female, including the present Most Devout Advisor, Fellis Jessina.

Percentage of women in the population: ~50% (please be known that census data is unreliable).

Percentage of women in...
Senior military officers: Roughly 80%, if we are to include Her Protectors.
School headteachers/principals: The Church of Her Divine Glory does not inform us of the gender of the Priests they assign to run local schools. We assume it to be about half, however. Those run by Her Court on behalf of Her Divine Glory have around 60% female leaders.
Legislature or equivalent: Her Court is the closest Brellachi analogue to a legislature. All but one of Her12 Devout Advisors are female at present.
Judges: The Church of Her Divine Glory does not inform us of the genders of the Priests they assign to lead local law councils. We assume it to be about half, however.
Police officers: Her Lawbringers, contrary to most, have detailed figures of their membership, and they have good representation. 56% of Her Lawbringers are women.
Cabinet ministers: Her Court is also the closest Brellachi analogue to a cabinet. See earlier answer to this.
Senior academics: Unknown. The preponderance of published materials on matters of history and language are by women, however.
Religious leaders: Yariss Uranti, the Most Devout Priest of Her Divine Glory, is female. Her immediate subordinates are split evenly.
Lawyers: Unknown.
Doctors: Most medical practitioners are members of the Priesthood. They are mostly evenly split, with a skew towards women.
CEOs: Unknown, but believed to be roughly even.
Major landowners: Owing to the tradition of matrilineal descent, the vast majority of 'landowners' in city-dwelling populations are female for reasons of practicality.

Please note - we have no data for the tribes which constitute the bulk of our population, though it is known that the majority of them are headed by women, as they also adhere to the practical tenets of matrilineal descent. Beyond this we have no data.

Percentage of women in the prison population: ~50%. The Darkness spares no gender.

Percentage of women amongst victims of murder: ~55 - 60% (please not that this percentage is skewed; in matters of greed, murder is common, and matrilineal descent means women are disproportionately targeted - most often, however, by other women in their families, seeking to take that which is not owed to them. Greed is by far the most insidious weapon of The Dark, and so this is the largest cause for the rare act of killing in Brellach by a high margin).

Percentage of women amongst victim of sexual crime: Believed to be ~55%. Note that crimes of coercion for financial reasons are included in this statistic.

Are the punishments for crimes with predominantly female victims less severe than the punishment for other crimes of similar harm and blameworthiness?: Her Divine Glory requires that The Darkened receive the same spiritual cleansing no matter the gender of their victims.

average Sentence for violent/sexual crimes with female victims: No arbitrary period. All Darkened who are required to be seconded to Her Places of Redemption as Penitents undergo unique healing; it is up to the Priesthood to determine when the Penitent has been properly cleansed.

average sentence for violent or sexual crimes with male victims: No arbitrary period. All Darkened who are required to be seconded to Her Places of Redemption as Penitents undergo unique healing; it is up to the Priesthood to determine when the Penitent has been properly cleansed.

Does your nation support chivalry towards women? There is no word for this in Brellachi.

Does your nation support gender equality? All are Her Favoured Children. Only in matters of lineage and property is gender mentioned by law. It is an irrelevance otherwise.

Are there any laws that only apply to women(if so what are they)?: Excluding the Divine Contract of Rule, which applies to Divine Queens exclusively, no.

Are there any laws that only apply to men(if so what are they): No.

Do human rights laws apply to women?: I do not understand the question.

Other relevant policies and/or laws: All members of Her Protectors must be female. This is the only institution in Brellach which possesses such a requirement, and is outside the purview of Her Court and this humble servant.

Perhaps some words in your questions were lost to translation, but I have endeavoured to answer to my greatest ability.

Brightest blessings to you and yours.

Most humbly,

Rena Vaska
Devout Advisor of Her Court,
With Responsibility for Speaking with Those of Other Places

Has your nation ever had a female head of state: No, but the position is legally open to women.
Has your nation ever had a female head of government: No, but the position is legally open to women.
Percentage of women in the population: 52%
Percentage of women in...
  • Senior military officers: 3%
  • School headteachers/principals: 45%
  • Legislature or equivalent: 15%
  • Judges: 19%
  • Police officers: 23%
  • Cabinet ministers: 20%
  • Senior academics: 48%
  • Religious leaders: <5%. This is not due to government policy, but because of internal religious rules. A significant portion of the population (~40%) is atheist.
  • Lawyers: 39%
  • Doctors: 47%
  • CEOs: 11%
  • Major landowners: Almost all land is owned by the government.

Percentage of women in the prison population: 24%

Percentage of women amongst victims of murder: 32%

Percentage of women amongst victim of sexual crime: Estimated at above 85%

Are the punishments for crimes with predominantly female victims less severe than the punishment for other crimes of similar harm and blameworthiness?: Women are afforded important legal protections but there are a number of significant gaps in such laws, be it enforcement (laws criminalizing domestic violence) or a legal definition falling short of international standards (rape is defined by the use of violence, not consent).
  • Average sentence for violent/sexual crimes with female victims: About 15 years for serious crimes. Do note, though, that the security services (the State Security Committee, a.k.a. KSS) occasionally handles serious crime cases and largely operates extralegally.
  • Average sentence for violent or sexual crimes with male victims: About 15 years for serious crimes. See above note.

Does your nation support chivalry towards women? It is socially supported. The government itself has taken no position on the issue.

Does your nation support gender equality? Women enjoy full legal equality as well as antidiscrimination protections. Domestic violence is criminalized, as is spousal rape. However, antidiscrimination protections (for example, laws against workplace discrimination) are almost completely unenforced and routinely ignored. The legal definition of rape falls below international standards, and matches societal views of rape.
The women's rights movement faces severe repression. The few women's rights activists remaining in the country face heavy censorship of their activities and surveillance, and are at constant risk of forced disappearences carried out by the KSS. The government does, however, give some limited support to women shelters, but does not allow them to raise awareness of violence against women or publicize their activities.

Are there any laws that only apply to women (if so what are they)?: There is only one law that, by design, applies only to women: the law guaranteeing 6 months of maternal leave.

Are there any laws that only apply to men (if so what are they): No.

Do human rights laws apply to women?: Yes. As stated above, women enjoy full legal equality. Enforcement is a problem.

Other relevant policies and/or laws: Abortion is legal and free regardless of the reason.
