Founded in 2015, Tiandi is the only RP region of its kind.

Comanche horse archers rumble down the endless steppes of Central Yeongju, as Navajo city dwellers cower in fear. Korean machine guns mow down charging roves of French knights. A humbled pharaoh presents a bountiful feast to visiting Manchu emissaries, hoping to secure a more lenient trade deal.

Tiandi is a realistic, modern-tech, closed worldbuilding and roleplay community. An immense amount of detail has been used to construct Tiandi in a logical and realistic manner--from matters ranging on climate, culture, human migrations, to many more.

Tiandi offers something different from most other NS regions. It is a region where East Asian civilization, rather than Western civilization, came to dominate and shape the rest of the world in its image. It is a region where indigenous American societies were not wiped completely from history due to disease and conquest, but rather survived (albeit against the trauma of East Asian colonization and imperialism). In Tiandi, the "empty" parts of the map are not to be ignored. Worldbuilding and RP in Tiandi is fully global.

The region was founded as a way to explore issues of race, geopolitics, and culture in a setting that required much more imagination and thinking than most other regions. Tiandi's unique history and lore allow for a deep philosophical discussion of the nature of the world and the factors that have shaped it. Are ideologies and religions unique to certain cultures, or are they more shaped by material factors? How central is geography to the development of societies? And how would clothing, music, and symbols of national identity have developed without Western influence?

Here, we string together novel narratives about this world in which even seeming trivialities like the popularity of ice cream must be reexamined and rethought with out-of-the-box thinking. Despite the hostility we have received to our mission and concept, Tiandi has nonetheless been able to flourish.

Today, we proudly have:

  • Our own wiki, now featuring over a hundred articles.
  • Started and done several RPs.
  • An international and diverse community of individuals.
  • A unique map built specifically with the region's purpose in mind.

Tiandi's map is unique, balanced, and reinforces the region's central concept.

Tiandi's symmetrical map was intentionally made to reinforce the concept of a dominant East Asian civilization. Sinju, the region's East Asia, is centrally located in the upper half of the map. The rest of the world appears to naturally branch out from Sinju, which occupies a position not as the "Far East" or even "East," but rather the "Center," in line with the historic supposition that China, the Middle Kingdom, was the center of the world and the center of civilization.

The region's unique geography and the connectivity of the continents allow not only for the realistic development of historic human migrations routes during the Paleolithic era, but also for the survival of indigenous American civilizations. The region and its predecessor, Lucerna, pioneered the existence of the "cultural map," a map that organizes cultures into a scheme that makes sense rather than randomly placing nations anywhere on a map.

Tiandi's unique lore allows for unparalleled worldbuilding.

Tiandi was founded on a unique premise: East Asian civilization, not Western civilization, would shape the world in its image. However, this is not the only way in which Tiandi diverges from most other regions. These changes have resulted in several things:

  • Korean is the lingua franca.
  • Indigenous Abya Yalan (Native American) societies exist and flourished historically.
  • Christianity has a very reduced presence in the world.
  • There are no European settler states. However, there are East Asian settler states.
  • Mandarin Chinese is not spoken as widely among Sinic peoples.
  • ...and much more.

Tiandi has a significant amount of already existing lore, which can be accessed via the Tiandi Encyclopedia and be discussed on the regional discord. In-depth discussion can be written in the Regional Discussion Thread.

Due to the ways in which Tiandi diverges culturally and historically from other NS regions, players are presented with the chance to think through why things have ended up the way they did, and have a greater appreciation of the forces of history. In addition, there is potential for greater creativity than most Western-dominated regions.

Tiandi produces quality content.

Since Tiandi first came into existence in 2015, we have produced several RPs, wiki articles, and more. In addition to official Tiandi canon, we also sponsor side projects. A significant amount of work has gone into creating Tiandi what it is.

Among these include:

Tiandi is home to a friendly, diverse group of individuals.

Most of our communication is done through our Discord, which you should join if you want any idea of what is going on in the region. In addition to our canon, we talk about everything from politics (in a separate channel from other things if you don't want to get involved) to our daily lives to the latest memes. Many of us are college students and are aware of the responsibilities which RL can have. We encourage that people prioritize their education and real life over their virtual life. And no, this isn't because we're mostly run by Asians, haha.

We have several people who are dedicated towards greater recognition and understanding of underappreciated cultures. However, those who want to RP mainstream and common cultures are welcome as well!

Previously, we have engaged in fun off-site activities such as multiplayer Civ V and Europa Universalis IV games. We may host these again in the future--please join us if we do!

While we are a fairly accepting community, there are a few things which we do not accept, which are explained in the rules on our Discord. Also, feel free to send a nation into the region or join the Discord even if you don't make a nation here.

  • Due to everyone wanting to be the special nation that was not colonized, it is now so that if your nation is not culturally East Asian, it must have been colonized. Exceptions can be granted after being part of the region for a while.
  • Please refrain from creating a nation with a GDP (either nominal or PPP) of over $1 trillion. This doesn't mean you should try to get as close to this number as possible.
  • Please refrain from claiming a population of over 100 million people. New nations in the Sinju area or nations with a GDP per capita of over $20,000 should not have a population of over 40 million.
  • Don't ask me to create more islands for your Japanese nation in the East Sinju area.
  • Place your claim in an area of the world that corresponds with the cultural map.
  • If your nation is not culturally East Asian, it must have been colonized. No exceptions.
  • European colonial offshoots (America/Canada/Australia analogues) will be rejected.
  • Only East Asian nations may currently have colonies; those colonies must be far-flung and tiny.
  • Human claims have precedence over NPCs, which have an asterisk after the name. Every unnamed plot on the map is also an NPC; they are just yet without names and stats.

NATION APPLICATION

Shortform name: Self-explanatory.

Real life culture influence: This should be answered mainly in terms of language and ethnicity. We generally prefer having nations with cultures that don't exist as a player nation yet.

Real life culture of former colonizer: This refers to European-style colonization from the late 15th century on. No former European colonies. There are NO EXCEPTIONS to this rule. Only East Asian nations are allowed to have colonized in Tiandi, and virtually non-East Asian nations should have been colonized in the past.

Population: The median country on Earth has 5 - 7 million people. Of course, player nations are generally allowed to have nations that are more populous than this.

GDP (PPP) per capita: GDP (PPP) is generally higher than GDP (nominal) in nations that are still developing. Please look at nations similar to how you envision your nation to be and base your numbers off of that. Very wealthy nations often have a higher nominal GDP. The median GDP (PPP) per capita for a nation on Earth is around ~$11,000, which would be a statistic for an upper middle income nation.

GDP (nominal) per capita: Non-East Asian (Korean/Japanese/Chinese/Vietnamese) or non-Sinicized are for the most part not allowed to be wealthy nations or have GDP per capitas above $25,000. Very lightly populated petrostates and a few South Asian nations are allowed to be wealthy and developed as well, but due to how being a petrostate has so often been used as an excuse here to have a wealthy nation, only a select few will be able to do so.

Military manpower (active/reserve): Look at RL numbers for similarly developed and populated nations.

Language(s): The lingua franca of Tiandi is Korean. Non-European nations should not have European languages as a major language, unless due to large amounts of immigration.

Nation description: Should be short. However, there should still be a decent description of what the nation is like; try to provide a general summary. Develop a decent amount but not too much without knowing all that much about this region's established canon (and especially before being accepted, haha). Wealthy East Asian and East Asian settler nations should be for the most part liberal democracies, which the region currently has a shortage of.

Are you willing to drastically alter your nation in order to fit with Tiandi canon?: Should be a yes.

Main nation on NS: My main nation on NS is Arumdaum but my nation in Tiandi is Jeongmi. Many people don't send their main nations into Tiandi, and it is much easier to contact people through their mains.

Main/puppet/NPC: Is this nation going to be your main nation on NS? Is it simply going to be a puppet? Players should keep at least one nation in the region; if it CTEs, all your nations here will be removed from the map or turned into an NPC. NPCs can be used and developed by anyone, but anything major should be up to the decision of the regional leadership (Arumdaum/Sabara/Daeseong).

Link to map claim: Provide a link to your map claim on Imgur, saved as a png and not cropped. This makes it easier for me to add it to the map. The map ratio is 81 km2 for every pixel; the RL places on the bottom right corner of the map correspond nearly exactly to how large they would be on the map. Tiandi is roughly the size of Earth, though it has more water and 20% less land area.

Try to make your claim look interesting pay attention to the cultural map. Try not to stick to the coast or claim all the empty land in an area. Coasts are often premium territory, and so 'Chile' shaped nations that may landlock others are discouraged whereas incredibly large claims will be moderated. If you want, I can draw a claim for you as well.

How did you find out about Tiandi?: I would love this information for recruitment purposes.

Apps can be accepted by either Arumdaum, Sabara, or Daeseong. We generally work to try and accept everybody, so please apply! After posting, please join us on our Discord to discuss your application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Tiandi only for Asian nations?

No. Tiandi is a diverse planet roughly the size of Earth, and is home to a multitude of unique cultures.

Why is the lingua franca Korean and not Mandarin Chinese?

OOCly, Korean is the most convenient for me as an ethnic Korean. Also, it's pretty cool having Korean as the lingua franca. ICly, history played out in ways in which Korean played a more significant role globally and Mandarin Chinese did not become the dominant language among Sinitic peoples.

Why can't my nation speak Korean/Japanese/Mandarin?

There are already other countries which speak that language. It doesn't make sense for several different countries to all be speaking the same exact language with the same exact standardization, especially if they are far away from one another. However, this is somewhat negotiable in that there can be different dialects and efforts toward standardization by several different countries.

Why isn't Mandarin Chinese the standard for all Sinic nations in Tiandi?

The same historical factors which led to Mandarin becoming dominant in China did not occur in Tiandi. In addition, Mandarin Chinese is also special in that it was influenced by the languages of northern nomads.

Why can't RL country have been involved in my country's history?

Tiandi is a closed world; it does not interact ICly with the rest of the NS world or the RL world.

Why can't my Western, European nation have colonized?

European nations did not colonize in Tiandi's history.

Why can't I be a former European colony?

European nations did not colonize in Tiandi's history.

Why can't my non-European nation have heavy European influence?

European nations did not colonize in Tiandi's history.

Why shouldn't everyone in my country be using English as a second language? Isn't English an international language?

Not in Tiandi. In Tiandi, the British Empire and the United States never existed. Korean fulfills English's RL position.

Why can't I claim wherever I want?

In order to have the locations of countries, languages, and cultures make more sense, Tiandi has a cultural map that roughly shows the location of indigenous cultures prior to colonialism.

Can I claim in areas where there are NPCs?

Yes. NPCs are placeholders until player-controlled nations come along.

Are the borders on the map fixed?

No. The ones for NPCs are again placeholders. They are there to remind people that the rest of the world still exists.

What is the map scale?

1 pixel = 4.6 x 4.6 km

I was told I was seeing an older version of the map. How can I access the newest one?

Instructions are here.

Why can't my country be rich, large, and wealthy?

Not every country can be rich, wealthy, and large. Furthermore, in order to keep regional canon stable, different areas of the world have different levels of wealth and standards of living.

Does Tiandi use NS stats or NS stat calculators?

No. We make up our own stats, within reason.

Are puppets allowed?

Puppets are allowed in Tiandi. However, if nothing is done with it, we may ask for it to be removed.

Does the WA have any role in Tiandi?

The WA has zero relevance in Tiandi.

NATION APPLICATION

Shortform name: Samanohuwa

Real life culture influence: Polynesian with a healthy dosage of Mahajapit Majahapit Mahapajit Majapahit and other Southeast Asian influences

Real life culture of former colonizer: Japan

Population: 56,620,758

GDP (PPP) per capita: NS$36,270

GDP (nominal) per capita: NS$29,209

Military manpower (active/reserve): ~170,000 / ~60,000

Language(s): Hawaiian, Marquesan, Samoan, Tonganese, [Colonizer language]

Nation description: "The Land of the Friendly Sharks", as the name of the nation and archipelago that is the Kingdom of Samanohuwa literally translates to, is a fertile and relatively new nation from a historical perspective - strong currents flow along the side facing the nearest continent in both directions, and the warm waters draw frequent storms, so much of was only colonized by humans in the third century BCE, when many other civilizations had progressed deep into the Iron Age. A network of hundreds of islands spread across thousands of square kilometers, ranging from flat and level atolls and rocky outcroppings in the east, fog-enshrined volcanic islands in the middle, quickly rising to the snowcapped tectonic massifs of Laninui in the west, the largest island by far in the nation. A combination of fertile soils, excellent timber, rare and exotic fruits and spices, and of course the large gold and iron (and centuries later, thorium) deposits ensured an excellent base from which to grow an economy from, and later a nation.

For the first several hundred years of the archipelago's history, it was little more than a collection of tribes alternately warring or forging alliances. It was Ahuahu that first started unifying the islands, and it was his unification of the island of Samanohuwa proper that is the reason why he is considered the nation's first true king. He began a long campaign of expansionism, which eventually led to Samanohuwa controlling about an eighth of the kingdom's present territory by the end of his reign in the middle of the fourth century. The next four hundred years saw periods of both slow and fast expansion, but it was under the reign of Kuitakui I that it underwent its largest expansion - reaching out to unoccupied atolls to the east and westward towards Lanuinui, where his expansion eventually halted around his fiftieth birthday.

While the differences between the other islands were relatively subtle from island to island in Samanohuwa, Lanuinui was quite different. Despite being larger than most of the others combined, it had been united for most of its existence. While the rest of Samanohuwa was predominantly of the native Samanohuwan faith (which would not be standardized until well into the fourteenth century) with some esoteric Theravadan Buddhism, Lanuinui was predominantly Hindu with more standard Theravadan Buddhism as the main religion. Samanohuwa had a single king, Lanuinui had an oligarchy of chiefs, princes, and kings. Samanohuwans often wore clothes only to protect against inclement weather or during dangerous activities (though some would even go into battle nude) unless they were priests, Lanuinuians would wear garments to protect their already worn cotton, linen, and silk clothing imported from across the sea. Lanuinui had population numbers and slightly better armor, but Samanohuwa had more soldiers, more experienced generals, and better training. Still, Kuitakui would keep appearances of peace while building up his armies and war fleets.

The conquest would go on for six long grueling years, and Kuitakui, slain by a favored general who had been tricked by a power-hungry priest, would fall on the last day of the war. The coming dawn would see the surrender of the government of Lanuinui, and for this the new (and current) capital of 'Aho'eiku was named and established, for the old one on Samanohuwa proper, Kaneloa had been severely damaged in a storm - it would eventually serve as the judiciary capital centuries later. The massive boost in income from the gold and iron so plentiful in Lanuinui's mountains would not be enough to undo the damage caused by the war, and Samanohuwa went into several centuries of tenuous stability. There was the king operating out of 'Aho'eiku, yes, but his power was nowhere near the level that it was before the war, and much power was in petty chiefs through whom the kings delegated power to save money. During this time, Samanohuwans would grow themselves an unfortunate (but at the time well-deserved) reputation as raiders and pirates.

For thousands of kilometers around, Samanohuwan ships became feared for their raids, stealing gold, women, and just about anything not nailed down, even the men. They reached as far as northern Miju, taking a sizable number of slaves from there and the lands beyond via either raids or trade. It was from here that the bulk of the black and white minorities both originate, as Samanohuwan law did not allow interracial relationships even among the slave caste. The whole time, the actual government engaged in trade with the lands to the north - conveniently and easily brushing aside the rampant piracy because Samanohuwan pirates simply did not raid that far north in that era. As tactics and technology changed however, the raiding slowed, eventually stopping near the end of the eleventh century. For the next six centuries, Samanohuwa would mostly manage to stay out of trouble - having a civil war in the twelfth and sporadic attempts to colonize both the mainland and Barujaya in the fourteenth were the largest exceptions. The power of the Moa (king/emperor/depends-on-who-you-ask) waxed and waned not unlike the tide as the nobles grew and shrank in power.

Eventually though, changing behaviors among sea tradesmen, changing politics, and a period of government weakness resulted in a rebound in piracy in an age when the whole sphere of Tiandi could be navigated. For a while, Samanohuwa let it be, much to the chagrin of the greater powers. Crime or not, it brought in money and it mostly didn't impact Samanohuwa. And when it did they could show to said greater powers that the Moa was 'doing something' by arresting a few pirates that tried to take out of the government's pie - especially in regards to slaves, which Samanohuwa by then took from nearly every continent that the world had access to. Foreign pirates flocked to Samanohuwa as well because of these policies, eventually founding the third of the largest cities, Leiovaki, as a virtually lawless city where crime and chaos were rampant.

A major pirate raid against a treasure fleet owned by the governments of [colonizing nation] in the middle of the eighteenth century was the last straw. Fusen could tolerate it no longer. The war was short, with few casualties on either side, but it was enough for Fusen to force a treaty with the Moa that in effect made them barely above a protectorate. It wasn't all bad - liberalism was brought to the Samanohuwan government by this protectorate status, as well as proper industrialization later in the nineteenth. The Kaleoali'i, the unicameral parliament of Samanohuwa, was formed in this era, universal men's suffrage for native Samanohuwans was granted in 1810, expanding to women in 1895 and all races in 1901. The economy grew further, with mines and plantations appearing alongside hotels, railways, and larger shipyards.

However, as the years wore on Fusen grew more and more controlling of Samanohuwan politics and culture. Laws regarding what clothes to wear, what food to eat, who to eat with and when (and how), who and how to vote for whom, what gods to worship and how to do so, what to celebrate, when to celebrate, and how to celebrate it, laws restricting or outright banning certain relationships, such were the Outsider Laws as they were known. Temples were torn down or repurposed for [colonizing nation]'s gods, land tenure - which had already been slowly shifting away from stewardship to ownership - was cemented as such, laws on morality and trade rights were passed and quite strongly enforced.

Like in much of the rest of the developed world, nationalism began to rise as the nineteenth century began to end. Politicians who wanted to reduce or even end outside control of Samanohuwan affairs gained popularity in the Kaleoali'i. The end of Fusen's rule came about in 1910 during what would come to be known as the Monsoon War, as it initially started as protests over a perceived lack of aid after a severe storm damaged Leiovaki. This swelled over the course of barely two months into a full-scale rebellion, which ironically ended up gaining support within [colonizing nation] when the startling degree of corruption was shown among Fusen's governors who controlled Samanohuwa. As a partial result, relations between Fusen and Samanohuwa warmed up quickly afterwards. Even so, the new Moa, Loka II created a new constitution with sweeping reforms that eliminated or even reversed many of the Outsider Laws. Some who had grown to approve of them attempted a rebellion (the Fourth Month Revolt) but it did not last long.

It would be important - during the Eulhae [or whatever you're calling it without Akitsukuni] War, Samanohuwa became a target due to its rich iron deposits and plentiful locations for hidden naval bases and airfields. But it held its ground, and provided great help to the Allies, even participating in later counter-invasions during the war. For its efforts, it became a founding member of the Congress of Nations, and has secured its position as Relevant Clay. Since the end of the war, the Kaleoali'i has grown in power to be nearly equal to the Moa and the political climate has largely stabilized.

Tensions exist between the leaders of the more remote and traditionalist tribal councils of the mountains and the more modern-living peoples and politicians of the cities, and piracy remains a problem in the more remote fringes and near the outside, but the Samanohuwan Navy ensures it never becomes anything more than a regional problem in the more dangerous areas. Even on land though, crime is an occasional problem, which tends to go up during the dry seasons or when the tourism yuans stop flowing. Other problems include a decaying road and rail infrastructure in many areas, which ranges from 'pothole farm' to 'pray it isn't raining' outside of the larger cities.

Tourism remains a major industry due to the beautiful beaches (and equally beautiful citizens), but Samanohuwa is not lacking in other fields - agriculture, mining, medical instruments, pharmaceuticals, electronics, and most notably the arms industry - the Samanohuwan military, featuring one of the largest navies in the world and no army at all (on paper) and a very small air force (on paper, almost solely consisting of bombers and transports) uses primarily Samanohuwan equipment. Culturally Samanohuwa is distinctly Samanohuwan, but there is still evidence of [colonizing nation]'s rule here and there, especially in more urban cities. Far from considering it a shame, Samanohuwa is proud of and celebrates the pirates of its past, though most don't like to talk about the more modern aspects of it unless they're actively involved in it.

Main nation on NS: Manaban (满阿半) is a hypothesis of what Manchukuo would be if it would0ve survived WWII and gotten to modern times, and as such, it's made of different ethnicities that surround it. It started as an absolute monarchy, but today it is a Federal Republic, though the Aisin Gioro (ex-royal family) almost always wins elections which means there is a certain level of corruption. Weather is mostly dry and cold; as you get closer to the coast it's more humid and populated. The further you move to the countryside, it gets drier and less populated. Huge TV and electronics manufacturer (if these are a thing in Tiandi, I don't know its era)

[Colonizing nation] could tolerate it no longer. The war was short, with few casualties on either side, but it was enough for [colonizing nation] to force a treaty with the Moa that in effect made them barely above a protectorate.

However, as the years wore on [colonizing nation] grew more and more controlling of Samanohuwan politics and culture.

The end of [colonizing nation]'s rule came about in 1910 during what would come to be known as the Monsoon War, as it initially started as protests over a perceived lack of aid after a severe storm damaged Leiovaki. This swelled over the course of barely two months into a full-scale rebellion, which ironically ended up gaining support within [colonizing nation] when the startling degree of corruption was shown among [colonizing nation]'s governors who controlled Samanohuwa. NATION APPLICATION

Shortform name: Chandragupta
Real life culture influence: Eastern Indian, Bangladeshi
Real life culture of former colonizer: Korean
Population: 90 million - 170 million (negotiable); preferably 164.7 million
GDP (PPP) per capita: $2,992
GDP (nominal) per capita: $1,517
Military manpower (active/reserve): 157,050 (active)
Language(s): Chandraguptan (simplified-Sanskrit conlang written in Urdu or Gujarati-Devanagari mix), Hindustani, Korean
Nation description:
Chandragupta is a country in South Asia, composed of seven provinces. It covers (according to the claim) 627,345 km2 and is home to approximately 100 million people. Its capital is Simhapura, located directly at the confluence of the Gupta Delta; while its three largest metropolitan areas are Vanga, Manthara and Devaputra. Chandragupta is the most densely-populated country in the world with an area of above 100,000 km2. Despite this, it has a low urbanization rate, with 64.2% of its inhabitants being concentrated in villages. Most of Chandragupta’s geography is dominated by the fertile Gupta Delta, the largest delta in the world. The northwestern parts of the country are home to various plateaus, while the northeastern edges are composed of hill ranges. Chandragupta’s climate is tropical, with mild winters and a hot and humid summer. Natural calamities, typically hurricanes and floods, occur almost every year.

The region was once home to Dravidian and Austroasiatic peoples, who formed various states such as the Vanga Kingdom. These inhabitants were displaced during the Indo-Aryan migrations. By the Vedic period, Chandragupta was the centre of various states such as the Magadha, Shunga, Kanva and Pala Empires. It was also known for its role in overseas trade, being a source of muslin and silk and acting as a conduit for the spread of Buddhism elsewhere. Islam was introduced during the Pala Empire through trade with the Caliphate, though conquests by armies from Central Asia allowed for its proliferation. Following the collapse of the Mughal Empire in the 1700s, the region gained independence as the Chandragupta Sultanate. It was later conquered by 'Korea' at the Battle of Plassey in 1757. During the early 20th century, a non-violent nationalist movement headed by Mahatma Chandragupta led to Chandragupta's independence in 1947.

Chandragupta is a secular unitary monarchy under a constitutional parliamentary system. It has a nominal GDP of $136.53 billion-$257.89 billion and a purchasing power parity GDP of $269.28 billion-$508.64 billion (depending on population estimates). Chandragupta has a steadily-growing economy, having become a hub for informational technology services, media, entertainment and religion. Today, Chandragupta faces issues with caste inequality, environmental sustainability, overpopulation, and corruption.

NATION APPLICATION

Shortform name: Unguria
Real life culture influence: Turkic
Real life culture of former colonizer: Not established, anything works
Population: 32,500,000
GDP (PPP) per capita: $6,170
GDP (nominal) per capita: $2,138
Military manpower (active/reserve): ~68,000 active, ~90,000 reserve
Language(s): Ungurian
Nation description: A dictatorship with elements of theocracy, the military also plays a prominent role in the nations decision and policy making. The government follows a unique ideology, similar to the Wilāyat al-Faqīh in Iran (will work out more in depth l8r). Ungurian people follow equivalent of Shi'ite Islam. Economically the country leans on the poorer side, but hasn't had any problems with famines, inflation and so on. Iran is an obvious influence, though I am not intending for it to be a carbon copy.
