Nation description: Sakushi (Cheonja: 朔志), officially the Republic of Sakushi (Cheonja: 朔志民国), is a sovereign nation in Bangju, within the cultural spheres of Aynusphere and Sinju. It borders Wamu to the north and Tosan to the south, while facing the East Sea to its west. Sakushi's name comes from the Aynuic words 'sak' (summer) and 'ushi' (place), describing how the lands of Sakushi were warmer than the lands of modern-day Kaisa and Wamu, from which Aynu settlers arrived.

Later, Fusenese migrants introduced advanced agricultural and metallurgical techniques, but also competition and conflict, which ended with the absorption of the Fusenese by the Aynu through intermarriage, forming the modern Sakushin people. In the centuries that followed, Sakushi remained a loose confederation of clans that was variously forced to submit to Wamu and Tosan, but maintained a modicum of autonomy and an unique culture. With the advent of nationalism, a Sakushin national identity developed, culminating in its declaration of independence in X. Having fallen behind in industrialisation during Tosanese domination, newly independent Sakushin looked to Fusen to help her industrialise.

Today, Sakushi is an unitary parliamentary republic and developed country, with a high-income economy built on a balance of manufacturing and services. It is also an active participant in international diplomacy, as a member of the Congress of Nations and Sinju Union.

Nation description: Nomadic groups (living in bands) that were originally annexed by the Indikulu Empire and naturalized at its peak. As the Indikulu Empire faltered and began shrinking in size, the "Lingyans" returned to their traditions and used their technological knowledge to declare their own city-state. Having little natural resources on its own, it relied on lending mercenary work to other Mijuan states for income. In pre-colonial Miju, "Lingyan" mercenaries returned to their homeland as prestigious narrators, who provided counsel to local chiefs (in reality, the society was very egalitarian in governance and chiefs were not explicitly elected) and through diplomatic maneuvers ensured that "Lingy" would remain de jure independent albeit fathomed by Mijuan superpowers. Sansiaonese explorers (subordinate to Meisaan) took interest in "Lingy" for its strategic location between Matobo and *Ekunha. "Lingy" mustered up a resistance (a la "Battle of Rorke's Drift") against the later Meisaani conquest, but was ultimately thwarted. Sansiaonese people (subjects of Meisaan) comprised the majority of settlers. As "Lingy" lacked any worthwhile natural resources, many "Lingyans" were indentured in the colonial era and sold to neighboring Sinjuan colonies. Liberated by Matobo in the Eulhae War, "Lingy" was also able to recover from its population losses, through a post-war "Lingyan Repatriation" campaign, that would return formerly enslaved "Lingyans" scattered across many Mijuan states back to their homeland. At their formal independence after Eulhae, "Lingyans" would for the first time need to decide upon the nature of their first republic. Their solution? Mijuan fascism with anti-Sinjuan characteristics.

NATION APPLICATION

Shortform name: Lomtai (南風; ລົມໃຕ້)
Real life culture influence: Southeast Asian Lao inspired con-culture
Real life culture of former colonizer: N/A
Population: 42,370,069
GDP (PPP) per capita: $20,190,455
GDP (nominal) per capita: $13,231
Military manpower (active/reserve): 25,000 active/3,900 reserve
Language(s): Lao
Nation description: Lomtai, officially the Great Republic of Lomtai (Lao: ລົມໃຕ້ສາທາລະນະລັດຍິ່ງໃຫຍ່; 大南風共和國; Lomtai Sathalanalad Nyinghainy) is a land-locked country located in South Jungju. Its name, Nomchiou, is written using the Chinese characters “南風”, as well as the Lao characters "ລົມໃຕ້" literally “south wind”. Nomchiou’s etymology originates from an ancient legend known as The Peasant From Lom.

Lomtai initially began as a territory of the Cheonje empire, with the first mentions of Lomtai were first recorded 316 CE. These first historical records detailed a small series of skirmishes along the Dokmai River between a group of northern elites and local commoners. Multiple skirmishes in and around the Dokmai area continuously occurred for decades following the initial fight. In 834 CE a long series of revolts against the oppressive Cheonje government led to a long war. In 866 CE, only a decade before the fall Cheonje, the southern region of what is now present-day Anvieng in southern Lomtai to gain its independence. Once Cheonje collapsed, Lomtai was able to conquer the majority of its present-day territory, thus beginning what is known as the First Majestic Kingdom. This kingdom lasted until 1401 when a mass coup d'ete forced the royal family into exile, and the founding of a new dynastic kingdom, the Lom Kingdom. Lom spanned all across present-day Lomtai, and even further into northern Suwannaphum and western Wa Muong, though by 1492 its territory had been enclosed to its present-day borders.

With the onslaught of the industrial revolution, Lom found itself unable to keep up with its neighbors, especially Van Xuan. The emperor was obsessed with upholding the values and practices of feudal society, much to the dissatisfaction of the commoners. Due to the introduction of republics up north in Sinju, the commoners had began to heavily resent the monarchy, this all culminated into a massive assault on the Majestic Palace, the aftermath of which was the death of the emperor and his children, the empress-consort along with the eunuchs were sent into exile. On 23 Samwol, 1876 the Republic of Lom was established, this republic oversaw the modernization and industrialization reforms throughout the country. Though Lom had made great progress, it was still exceedingly poor. Believing that it would bring great social and economic prosperity, the Lom government had founded the Democratic People's Commune of Lomtai (DPCL) in Yuwol of 1936. The chairman of the Communal Committee of Lomtai (CCL), Ghong Khankhan initiated the Great Leap Forward, a series of social, economic and political policies enacted to separate Lomtai from "evils" of capitalist Sinju. By 1950, more than 70% of Loms lived in extreme poverty, things only worsened when a drought in one of Lomtai's most vital agricultural regions brought about four decades of mass famine and disease. The Great Famine, as it has come to be known, ravaged Lomtai for decades, all the way into 1992 when a coup d'ete had forced the CCL to surrender its power and face execution. The international community, though mainly the Sinju Union on ASJN where highly doubtful that Lomtai could revive itself after such detrimental damage to its people. In 1993 a provincial government was established, this provincial government worked hard to reverse the policies enacted during the Communal Era, also known as the Great Leap Backward. After five years, the provincial government drafted a constitution, upon the signing of the constitution the provincial government was dissolved.

On 30 Owol, 1997, the Great Republic of Lomtai was established. Lomtai is a south Jungjuan nation, it is progressing rather quickly, it was one of the world's poorest countries, but since 2005 has been ranked among the 50 richest countries in the world. It's anticipated that by 2045 that Lomtai will take its place as one of Jungju's twenty-five Jungjuan Tigers. Lomtai has an advanced education system, and the government promotes a healthy lifestyle for all citizens. Despite the massive amounts of progress made, poverty and child hunger, as well as a lack of child labor laws continue to be large issues in Lomtai, regardless, it's a very nice country to visit!

NATION APPLICATION

Shortform name: Mulian (穆鍊 "gentle smelting"; phonetic interpretation of "mulda" in "Arbimulda")
Native name: Arbimulda (Gothic "arbi" 'inheritence' + "mulda" 'mold; loose earth')
Longform name: Mulian Gonghogue (穆鍊共和國)
Longform native name: Landisamanjan Arbimuldōs (landi- "national" + samana "together" + -jan [infinitive] ... -ōs [genitive]; borrowing from Övlandan "landasammell")
Real life culture influence: Goths
Real life culture of former colonizer: Cantonese people (Meisaan)
Population: 44,361,150
GDP (PPP) per capita: 1,800圓
GDP (nominal) per capita: 715圓
Military manpower (active/reserve): 210,000/70,000
Language(s): Gothic, Cumbric (bordering Talamh Caonach), Jersey language (bordering Lower Laai Republic), Frisian languages (bordering *Sora), Nynorn (revived Norn language; bordering Övlanda), Cantonese (colonial)
Nation description:
Precolonial Arbimuldans were for a long time considered a subculture of Sora, and the Arbimuldan language a Soraic dialect. To this day, Sora disputes the lands of Arbimulda for this very reason. The counterargument is that Arbimuldan paganism, law and architecture have developed independently throughout the years. The Arbimuldans were, for instance, organized feudally in small and distant (from one another) towns, and order was maintained through the formal and distinct gatherings of town nobles, which were called "mathliggái" (meetings). Rudimentary trade was also achieved with the more influential neighboring peoples: the Laainese, the Gwaela, and the Övlandars. As a result, towns near these cultural borders started speaking their neighbors' languages, which eventually became known as the modern-day Arbimuldan minority languages. Subjugated by Meisaan during the Sinjuan scramble for West Yojuan colonization, the lands were for the first time unitarily organized, and then extensively exploited for their amber and bauxite deposits. Due to Meisaani prolific surveillance of the colony, independentist thought grew but was not organized. Independentist leaders were oftentimes arrested and murdered without trial. Dissatisfaction with the Meisaani rule would peak during Eulhae, when the native Arbimuldans were largely malnourished yet nonetheless enlisted in the Meisaani forces, forced to build bunkers, trenches, and other fortifications in expectation of a Jeongmian-backed Sora invasion of the colony. While such an invasion did not occur, these advancements contributed to the rise of Frithareiks Hjonnmaihairts ("Frederick the Pandahearted"), nonviolent resistance activist and the country's founding father. After the Eulhae War, Frithareiks entered negotiations with the Meisaani Republic, which ended up granting independence to Arbimuldan albeit disfavorably; To this day, Mincangan corporations control the majority of Arbimuldan industry and are reportedly involved in child labor schemes. The republic is nowadays run almost interchangeably by the Social Democratic Party and the National Front Party (de facto two-party system), which are also notorious for political scandals.

I'm just changing a few things around, again. I think we're supposed to re-apply whenever we change something...?

NATION APPLICATION

Nation description: Lomtai, officially the Great Republic of Lomtai (Lao: ລົມໃຕ້ສາທາລະນະລັດຍິ່ງໃຫຍ່; 大南風共和國; Lomtai Sathalanalad Nyinghainy) is a land-locked country located in South Jungju. Its name, Lomtai, is written using the Chinese characters “南風”, as well as the Lao characters "ລົມໃຕ້" literally “south wind”.

By 1977 more than 70% of Lomtai's working class were in extreme poverty, and the people began to get fed up. The CCL made various promises, which all fell through. NATION APPLICATION

Shortform name: Cheranaga Nadu
Real life culture influence: Primarily Malayali with influences from Bengali, Tamil, Syriac, Maldivian, Amhara, and various scheduled tribal South Indian cultures.
Real life culture of former colonizer: China
Population: 48,729,017
GDP (PPP) per capita: $17,780
GDP (nominal) per capita: $14,506
Military manpower (active/reserve): 42,000/75,000
Language(s): Malayali and Mandarin are the official languages
Nation description: The legendary Cheranagas Empire is where the modern state derives its legacy from. The Cheranagas Empire was ruled by the Cheranagas Dynasty, a legendary dynasty tracing its lineage from the Nagaraja (King of the Naga) of the ancient fables, and made its mark on Tiandi by establishing its empire in Tiandi. The empire was ruled by an autocratic king, kept in check by his ministers of both secular and of religious nature. Various religious and philosophical schools of thought received patronage from the state, and flourished within the empire. Poetry would flourish, and literacy was relatively high among the middle and upper echelons of society. Unlike other societies in Tagol, the Cheranagas had relatively high participation of women in the affairs of worship and local politics, and were given considerable freedoms in regards to inheritance and marriage customs. Its society was largely matrilineal and elements of that persist in the present despite the issues of colonialism. Its prominence would be seen most visibly in the temple-city known as “Anapali” (lit. elephant church), which was located in the southern coast on the banks of the delta. Anapali would later go on to be the capital of the Cheranagas, and every subsequent state that would succeed it, as well as the Longzhouen colonial administration.

Due to its position in the world, it was a center for trade, and its rivers and backwaters provided a traversable path into the northern mountains and the northeastern plans. Its geography also allowed for merchants of various cultures to set up communities throughout the south, as well as providing the geographic grounds for indigenous communities of the empire to develop various dialects and unique customs and religious traditions. The increasing divisions would lead to the decentralization of power from the king to regional chieftains, especially in the northern mountains and southern coasts. The divisions would tear up the empire, and the Cheranagas Empire would fade. Subsequent kingdoms would rise up in the former empire, all claiming legitimacy from attempts to trace their own lineage to the Cheranagas Empire. Despite the centuries of state after state and the presence of a diverse but strong and culturally influential merchant class, there was some form of common identity among the peoples of the former lands, mostly through the language, similar schools of philosophy, and religious practices. The force to unite the peoples of the former Cheranagas would come centuries later by Longzhouen merchants and mercenaries establishing communities on the southern coasts and on the banks of the river. Through effectively playing the rival chieftains and kings against each other, Longzhou was able to effectively bring the territories together into a unified colonial enterprise.

The colonists would enact a series of policies to promote local unity and prevent infighting, introduced civil service examinations, and enacted a policy standardizing the local language. However, the colonial enterprise was brutal, with the subjects regarded as little more than uncivilized children and were often used as a source of cheap labor and to fill the ranks of the military. However, due to a wide array of factors, the colony would be granted independence in 1896. The newly born state would unite itself through its ancient identity, naming itself “Cheranaga Nadu” or Land of the Cheranagas. Cheranaga Nadu today is noted for high rates of political activism, labor movements, and its neutral stance in world affairs. It is a regional power in Tagol due to economic influence, however it has a rather small military due to a coup in Eulhae. The country faces issues regarding flooding, equitable access to social services, lagging infrastructure, as well as a low-intensity insurgency in the north by secessionists.

NATION APPLICATION

Shortform name: Taniilux
Real life culture influence: Aleut
Real life culture of former colonizer: N/A
Population: 17,140,681
GDP (PPP) per capita: $19,169
GDP (nominal) per capita: $6,701
Military manpower (active/reserve): 80,000/50,000
Language(s): Sinicized Aleut, Inuktitut, Ainu, lots of others
Nation description: Hyōgan is a large unitary state located in the northernmost part of Yeongju. The earliest settlements in the area were constructed around 700 BCE on the eastern coasts, on the Uddasasan Peninsula of Iluladmiv Bay. These settlements largely small trading and fishing outposts on the coasts, with cultural and linguistic ties to other people groups around the bay in modern-day Kaisa, Iluladmiv, and Wamu. As civilizations on the southern parts of the region grew and engaged in trade with early Sinjuan peoples, the city-states of Uddasasan remained largely isolated due to their remote location, and they lacked any real sense of political unity.

This would be the case for several centuries, with the city-states forming loose leagues for mutual security and trade benefits. The settlements also may have faced invasions from Nivkh and Ainuic peoples from the south, depending on how Iluladmiv's, Kaisa's, and Wamu's early histories develop. During the rise of Cheonje, the Uddasasan city-states remained on the fringe of Sinju--the fine furs and mineral resources produced in Uddasasan allowed for trade to occur, but the area was never made a proper tributary. From the 7th-9th centuries AD, the region experienced a wave of invasions from Aleut and Inuit nomads, who were forced to flee their homelands to the north because of foreign invasions and famine. This rapid influx of nomads pushed the Ainuic, Nivkh, and Kamchatkan people of the area further south into Bangju. By the end of the 9th century, Aleut groups constituted the bulk of the population of the Uddasasan Peninsula and surrounding areas.

The Aleut and Inuit nomads had brought with them advanced trapping and fishing techniques; this in turn allowed for a highly lucrative fur trade to develop with the states of Sinju. By the end of the 11th century, several small states had emerged in the area, having grown wealthy from the fur trade. As these states grew, so too did the frequency of raids from tribes to the north and east. By the 14th century, one of these states, Ulasaguq, had emerged as the most powerful, and began subjugating the surrounding region. In 1387, the Kingdom of Ulasaguq was officially founded.

Ulasaguq continued to flourish from fur trade, and it used its influence to expand outward--not only to the northeast to subjugate invading tribes, but also south to secure more trading posts in the Iluladmiv Bay. Ulasuguq's southern expansion, however, was ultimately stymied and resulted in minimal gain; the kingdom instead shifted its focus north. Throughout the 15th century, Ulasuguq slowly pressed northeast, conquering tribal groups and incorporating them into the kingdom. Because of the state's low population and the general hostility of the climate, however, control over these areas was loose, and the tribes were granted relative autonomy in exchange for furs. The trade and support from Ulasuguq allowed these already somewhat organized people groups to grow stronger, and these client states became an increasingly large thorn in Ulasuguq's side. In particular, various Inuit groups were able to amass enough power to declare independence in 1551, forming the State of Kayuktukmiut. The two states frequently warred with each other, and by 1615, Kayaktukmiut was incorporated into an autonomous region of Ulasuguq in the Treaty of Aglallkuq.

With the incorporation of Kayaktukmiut, Ulasuguq's dominance had been affirmed, and the door to the east had been opened. Ulasuguq leveraged the military power of Kayaktukmiut to spread its influence over the Arctic groups of northern Yeongju. The kingdom established large fort cities and trade outposts in the region, establishing hegemony over the indigenous tribes and granting them substantial autonomy. In the mid-18th century, Ulasuguq found a new opportunity to increase its power--by trading whale oil to industrializing Sinjuan powers. The Ulasuguq whale trade boomed, bringing the state substantial wealth that it used to build up its infrastructure and increase its influence. By 1850, the borders of Ulasuguq had reached the Mulberry Ocean coast of Yeongju.

Even with the wealth the whale trade brought, Ulasuguq was faced with numerous issues. The state was clearly divided into distinct halves--the industrialized Sinjuan western portion, and the barren Yeongjuan eastern portion--that were drastically different from one another. The kingdom struggled to maintain control over its vast frontier, and the westernmost portions of the state were (rightfully) seen as lawless wastelands. These issues were compounded by the growing power of Habchuash to the south throughout the coming decades. To the west, the looming threat of Sinju hung over Ulasuguq like a coming storm. In order to protect its interests, Ulasuguq sought alliances with Sinjuan states (most likely Fusen though this is TBD).

The modern history of the nation is largely TBD. Ulasuguq continued to develop its frontier throughout the 19th century. At some point, the kingdom became a fascist state. As Hachuabsh grew in power, the two nations probably fought over territory, with Ulasuguq losing some of its southernmost portions. During Eulhae, Ulasuquq probably joins the allies to fight Hachuabsh, and becomes a Sinju-style democracy after the war. In the 20th and 21st centuries, the country faces separatist movements and civil unrest due to its sheer number of ethnic groups (this is probably why the nation is split in two halves, though that can be left TBD since that area isn't owned by anyone yet). Today, the nation has a somewhat strong economy and has a high HDI ranking, but it is criticized for its authoritarian government and treatment of minority groups.

NATION APPLICATION

Shortform name: 豁亶 / 활단 Hwaldan ('wide sincerety'); natively: Ahtàldanh' (Gwich'in; lit. 'where there's sagehen', sage-grouse being the national animal of Ahtàldanh' and symbol of independence)
Real life culture influence: 3 groups of Alaskan Athabaskans (Hän Hwëch'in, Gwich'in, Tanana)
Real life culture of former colonizer: Hamenkin (conculture)
Population: 8,859,304
GDP (PPP) per capita: $18,804
GDP (nominal) per capita: $8,069
Military manpower (active/reserve): 60,000/40,000
Language(s): Gwich'in (official), Hamenkinese (co-official), Hän (national), Tanana (national)
Nation description: Hwaldan is a federal direct democracy consensus utilizing local consensus decision-making, a tradition that dates back to the first use of potlach councils between Hwaldanese city-states. From ancient times until Hamenkinese colonization, the lands were continuously ruled by mostly democratic city-states, sometimes unified under one alliance, other times in discord and disunity with one another. City-states would commonly also fall victim to demagoguery, and would later feudalize (where the potlach system was retained, but political corruption was rampant). In the mid-15th century, a four-year-long epidemic plague would break out in Hwaldan, decisively crippling the potlach democracy and spreading to neighboring lands. Under Hamenkinese control, mines for the extraction of copper, zinc, and jade were built, and a grand surplus transferred to the colonial power. At times, Hwaldanese workers would also be relocated to Hamenkin for special projects, then were returned to their homeland. During the Great Depression, a few rural insurgency movements on the north would emerge, albeit never succeed in spreading further south. In Eulhae, these movements would be forgotten, and Hwaldanese independence would be granted upon its conclusion. A civil war would ensue between advocates for Sinju-model representative democracy and traditional potlach-like direct democracy, with the latter victorious. Ever since, the country has been developing steadily, although lagging behind its neighbors.

Nation description: Lomtai, officially the Great Republic of Lomtai (Lao: ລົມໃຕ້ສາທາລະນະລັດຍິ່ງໃຫຍ່; Lomtai Sathalanalad Nyinghainy; Korean: 대남풍공화국; Dae Nampung Gonghwagug; Chinese: 大南風共和國; Dà Nánfēng Gònghéguó) is a land-locked country located in South Jungju. Its name, Lomtai, is written using the Chinese characters “南風”, as well as the Akson characters "ລົມໃຕ້" literally “south wind”. Lomtai’s etymology originates from an ancient legend known as The Peasant From Lom.

By 1950, more than 40% of Loms lived in extreme poverty, things only worsened when a drought in one of Lomtai's most vital agricultural regions brought five years of mass famine and disease. The CCL was eventually able to stabilize the situation, as Lomtai imported food from its neighbors, mainly Van Xuan. Though the famine had been dealt with, Lomtai continued to suffer from a rampant measles outbreak, the measles outbreak ended in 1960. The Great Famine, as it's come to be known, claimed an estimated 3-6 percent of the country's entire population. By 1977 more than 70% of Lomtai's working class were in extreme poverty, and the people began to get fed up. The CCL made various promises, which all fell through. In 1992 a massive coup d'ete, known as the Coup of the Commune resulted in the surrender and execution of Lomtai's former communal government.

Lomtai has a small number of foreign investors, mainly from Yedal and Yoju, since the country is rapidly developing, other nations foresee great economic prosperity in Lomtai's future. One of the largest contributes to Lomtai's economy is its tourism industry, the country is internationally renowned for its array of historical monuments, as well as its many geographic wonders. Lomtai receives upwards of 60 million tourists on an annual basis.

Shortform name: Pioneráan
Real life culture influence: French + Spanish Conculture
Real life culture of former colonizer: Cantonese (Meisaan)
Population: 13,420,870
GDP (PPP) per capita: 元28,950,600
GDP (nominal) per capita: 元11,500
Military manpower (active/reserve): 110,500 (active)/70,350 (reserve)
Language(s): Pioneráan Creole (平壤語: Pioneráan-cuŏi)
Nation description: The People’s Federal Republic of Pioneraan (Pioneraan Creole: 人民聯邦平壤共和國; Rhenáloure Fédiral Rhepúekuó d’Pioneráan) is a sovereign state located in West Yoju. It is a single-party, communist state ruled by the Workers Party of Pioneraan (Pioneraan Creole: 工人黨平壤; Partéu Rhen d’Pioneráan).

Pioneraan originated as a medieval kingdom, Deválos, which was one of West Yoju’s great powers at the time. In 1739 a number of Meisaani junks arrived on the western shore of Devalos, as it had turned out, the Meisaani frontiersmen and soldiers had mistaken Devalos for the Laai colony. Soon enough, Devalos became overrun with Meisaani settlers causing problems for the regular citizenry. Meisaani settlers were often arrested for causing havoc, some were even executed. In late autumn of 1755 Meisaani forces launched a full-front invasion of Devalos. Within a few weeks the capital had fallen, and the royal family had been killed. Initially Meisaan incorporated Devalos into to Laai colony, though had made the decision to constitute a new colony which encompassed all of Devalos. In the weeks following the establishment of the Pingrang colony (Pioneraan Creole: 殖民地平壤; Côhméndènt d’Pioneráan) a number of revolts had occurred throughout the region. While the local Meisaani forces were able to quelle the revolts, Pingrang still remained a highly unstable colony. Pingrang was highly valuable due to its abundant agricultural resources. As a result of decades of slowly rising tension and aggression, a massive revolt against the Meisaani colonizers erupted across Pingrang. The revolt lasted for eighteen months in what is known as the Pingrangan-Meisaani War (Pioneráan Creole: 衝突平壤美山和; Khongflíu d’Pioneráan Meitháagne-hé). Meisaan implementation oppressive policies upon the native populace, as well as extreme punishments pertaining to all forms of political dissodence.

During Eulhae dozens of independence movements emerged all over Pingrang. These protesting groups eventually united under one man, Carlos Aiza (磚強). Carlos advocated for the independence of Pingrang, and for the founding of a communist state in the region. While Meisaan was willing to grant Pingrang independence, the Meisaani government refused to do so if a communist government were to take form afterwards. After Meisaan’s failed attempt to install a capitalist government, the pro-independence movement declared Pingrang an independent, communist state. On 22 Siwol, 1960 the People’s Federal Republic of Pioneraan declared war of Meisaan. The war lasted for two years, with Meisaan losing.

In the present, Pioneraan is a single-party, communist state in West Yoju. It is one of the richest countries in its respective region.

NATION APPLICATION[/color]

Shortform name: Taikieng (泰岑)
Real life culture influence: Min Chinese (Fujian and such) + Tai peoples of China
Real life culture of former colonizer: None
Population: 77,416,256
GDP (PPP) per capita: $40,777
GDP (nominal) per capita: $32,026
Military manpower (active/reserve): 320,000/180,000
Language(s): Taikiengese (Fuzhounese), Siugoanese (Southern Min), Zhuang, Kam (or Dong)
Nation description: Taikieng first arose from the ashes of Tianqi, where warring states who claimed the Mandate of Heaven eventually unified in the late 900s under the Nuong dynasty (阮), whose Emperor claimed descent from a Tianqian prince, and thus claimed to be the legitimate successor to the late Tianqians. The Nuong undertook various military campaigns against the Mincangan states in the hope of capturing Danyang to rebuild it and eventually restore the Tianqian Empire. Upon the second Emperor’s death, these campaigns ceased due to them being ineffective and costly.

The Mincangan campaigns wasted a large amount of the Nuong’s resources, thus leading to an economic downturn in the late 1000s. Increased unrest led to several peasant revolts, which were crushed brutally by the Nuong. These crackdowns are remembered as the Bloody Killings (血殺) in Taikieng today, and several children’s tales used to intimidate the young include details of these massacres by Nuong imperial forces. This bloodshed only hastened the dynasty’s collapse, with a Nuong noble and general eventually leading a revolt in the west to overthrow the dynasty. This revolt succeeded, and in 1092, the Song (順) dynasty arose.

The Song also claimed to be the legitimate successors of the Tianqi due to them being closely related to the Nuong ruling family, but they pursued a more realistic approach to governance and expansion, only engaging in sporadic conflict with the Mincangan states. One of these wars led to the collapse of the first unified Mincangan state due to economic hardship. The Song dynasty was also the longest-lasting dynasty of Taikieng, ruling until 1703. During this time, the Song warred with the Zhuang and Kam peoples, completely annexing the latter in the 1630s and partially annexing the former's lands throughout its lifetime.

During the Song, Taikieng had a golden age during the 1400s, producing many works of literature and advancing in the sciences. Taikieng also began to explore the world to expand its commercial and political power, colonizing Rashnna, Lu’umijol, Rodasia, and more. In the late 1600s, a series of ineffective Emperors led to the collapse of the dynasty when the regent usurped the throne, creating the Ca (齊) dynasty. Like the Nuong and the Song, the Ca also claimed to be the rightful inheritors of the Tianqian Empire, even taking a character from their name. Due to the Song’s longevity, the Ca struggled to legitimize themselves, with several Song loyalist rebellions occurring in the first twenty years of the Ca. The western part of the country, under a Song successor state, eventually fell out of the Ca’s control. Both the Ca and the Western Song refused to give up, attempting to conquer the other in the 1730s. Due to this instability, Taikiengese global influence fell, but the Ca dynasty managed to retain control of its sphere of influence across the world.

Realizing that neither side could win, the Ca and the Later Song signed the [Insert town name here] Compromise of 1737. The Ca did so to unify the country and save what was now Eastern Taikieng’s global reach from collapsing, and the Later Song signed in order to secure themselves against a Mincangan invasion, as well as salvage whatever was left of their former power and glory. It was here where the Taikiengese diarchy was formed, with the Ca and the Later Song emperors ruling jointly from the planned city of Neging, located in the centre of the country.

Due to the constant power struggles of the diarchy, the bureaucrats and Confucian scholars on both sides gradually took more and more control over the court. They finally managed to politically eviscerate the Co-Emperors in 1801 in the Neging Coup, forcing them to sign over their powers to an Imperial Chancellor and thus becoming ceremonial monarchs.

The post-monarchical era was marked by the Industrial Revolution in Taikieng, political stability and increased prosperity. The Taikiengese colonial empire expanded greatly during this period, being at its zenith after the Eulhae War. Taking inspiration from Jeongmi, Taikieng expanded voting rights in 1814, and fully enfranchised its populace in 1860, so long as they could pass the voting exam. The exam was simplified more and more over time until 1899, when the whole of the population was granted suffrage. However, the Taikiengese Voting Acquisition Exam was repurposed for elections to the country’s upper legislative chamber, which remained restricted to educated individuals. In 1953, all college graduates were granted automatic voting rights for the upper chamber, with those who had not finished some form of higher education still requiring the test to vote for this upper house. In 1972, those students who had scored high on their Goko (i.e. Taikiengese Gaokao) were also granted automatic suffrage.

Taikieng seized some colonies from the Contingent Powers after the Eulhae War, Bakusai included. Taikieng’s main involvement in the war was in the Mincangan front, where, with Allied support, it eventually managed to push into Mincangan lands, capturing the ancient ruins of Danyang at the end of the war as the Nuong, Song and Ca had dreamed of. Both emperors conducted ancestral worship rituals in the ruins of Danyang, symbolizing that they had finally achieved the long-held desire (and, over time, delusion) of the various Taikiengese dynasties to succeed Tianqi, even if it was only in spirit. To this day, both royal families formally claim to be the legitimate successors of the ancient Tianqian Empire, but this is not taken seriously by most today, and the modern Taikiengese state has made no claims to any territories outside of its sovereign jurisdiction. Indeed, the Song co-emperor commented on this in the 1990s, saying that this claim was made to honour their ancestors and that they were not binding in any legal sense.

Eventually, the Taikiengese colonial empire collapsed slowly during the first half of the 20th century. Some countries left peacefully, whilst others were let go due to rebellions. Today, Taikieng is a prosperous Sinju nation with a global impact on the world’s history.

NATION APPLICATION

Shortform name: Zangkai
Real life culture influence: Wenzhounese
Real life culture of former colonizer: Not really applicable, but notable influence from whoever ends up invading
Population: 21,436,625
GDP (PPP) per capita: $56,303
GDP (nominal) per capita: $51,235
Military manpower (active/reserve): 66,000 active, 5,000 reserve
Language(s): Wenzhounese
Nation description: 4,000 years ago, a small fishing village was established in western Sinju. This fishing village would slowly grow over the millennia until it was the city of Zangkai, a quiet trading town known primarily for its more salacious trades. (This was a misconception -- fish, particularly carp, were always more widely traded in the city than anything iniquitous. Rumors die hard, however.) It, along with its smaller neighbors, would be traded between this or that empire for centuries, generally with little consequence to Zangkai itself. This would be until 1254, however, when a clique of nobles with high-minded ideals about republicanism would take advantage of the crumbling Feng Dynasty and create the perfunctorily-named Republic.

After establishing the Republic, the ruling nobles would work hard to turn its reputation from that of a place mainly to buy drugs, weapons, and women to a legitimate trading institution. This would be largely in vain until the age of exploration, when Zangkai was one of the first and most successful in building a trading empire with far-flung nations across the world. This would mark the Zangkainese Golden Age, when, in spite of its small size, Zangkai would leverage its wealth to establish trade routes and trading companies spanning the globe. It would never use this might into taking more territory for itself (beyond expanding its borders to feed its burgeoning population) or fighting with its stronger neighbors, however, preferring instead to buy their friendship.

A period of economic decline in the 1800s, however, would see political instability come to Zangkai, and a civil war was inches from breaking out before [X] invaded and occupied Zangkai in favor of the republic. In order to maintain peace, however, the invaders would come to rule Zangkai for the next 80 years, allowing the nobles to maintain their positions but subjugating the local population otherwise. This period of foreign rule would come to an end in 1893, when the ruling class of Zangkai was able to afford its independence and reestablish the Republic.

Today, Zangkai is a rich, multiethnic, unequal country, a series of gleaming megacities surrounded by countryside. Its economy is dominated by the service sector, particularly banking, gambling, and tourism. Its politics are as byzantine as ever, with the system opened to all citizens but only so far -- positions like the High Council and the Council Secretary being open only to the noble few. Zangkai enjoys a seat among the world's liberal democracies, a position it secures through the money flowing from them into itself. Occasionally criticized by the fringe left wing of the world, the nation by and large gets away with its inequality and illiberality, mostly by threatening to liquidate the assets of its critics.
