Utilities in your nation

Postby Daniel-Franklin » Fri Sep 20, 2019 10:31 am

Are basic utilities, such as water, power, etc. public, private, or mixed in your country? In Daniel-Franklin, they're private in government-controlled territory, but public in rebel zones, as the rebel regime has nationalized them.

Water is public utility in all of Thermodolia, private water companies do not exist here.

Electricity, gas, internet, and other utilities are both public and private with the federal government owning three utility corporations; Thermodolian National Power Corporation, Thermodolian National Internet Service Corporation, and the Thermodolian National Petroleum and Gas Corporation.

Utilities such as electricity, water, gas and network access are provided by the government. there has been no privatisation for over 80 years.

It may come as a total shock, but our electric utility is public. This happened as part of the Raid Tax Reforms Adjustments, which are totally NOT an anti-corruption reform package that a rebel could call un-Decepticon, which were decreed a few hundred years ago.

In this, um, governmental efficiency drive instituted 500 years ago, all infrastructure was nationalized in order to ensure that the services were actually provided and that needed repairs actually took place. Most of the attention was put onto planetary maintenance, such as the repair and replacement of the metal panels that Cybertron is made of, but some other utilities were included as well as other services deemed absolutely critical. Among others, these included electricity and one telecommunications company. At this time, the first tax - the Raid Tax - was instituted to pay for it. This tax is only levied on resources that Decepticons have raided from other planets AND that they sell at our official Raid Dropoff Points.

Before this, everything was private, and being proper Decepticons, most contractors took any money they got (especially the kind of big money that goes with government contracts) and flew away with it to points unknown, never to deliver their services. It is totally coincidental that the Raid Tax and associated nationalizations happened less than a day after Leader Megatron fell right through a rusted planetary panel, almost crashing to the level below before he could fire his jets and stop his descent.

Notably, it is considered extremely un-Decepticon to be against corruption, and outright heresy to actually legislate against it, regardless of circumstances. Therefore, Leader Megatron and the government never refer to this change as the Raid Tax Reforms (like many civilians privately do), but instead, as a simple government drive for improved efficiency. They keep this terminology and reasoning up even in private, to make sure that a bug or hot mic can't pick up something about it that could spark a fairly large rebellion! Of course, what it did to improve efficiency was remove the corruption factor from the services covered by the decree.

It is said that the Raid Tax Decree came just a few hours after Leader Megatron fell through a rusted planetary panel on Cybertron, which was supposed to have been maintained by a company that turned out to have disappeared off the face of the planet - along with the contract money. Speculation is that Megatron realized that the corrupt contractors would let all of Cybertron just rust out from under us all if something wasn't done to put a hard halt to that particular implementation of the Decepticon Way. Notably, all form of connivery of this sort have always been totally legal (and still are), so there were no specific punishments levied against the owners of that or any other company.

Anything not blocked by the Raid Tax Decree is still totally legal, so the overall culture of the Nation hasn't been changed at all. Everyone had still better keep his wits about him, and not pay in advance for things, especially if a lot of money is involved!

The only public utility in Great Nortend. It is regulated under the Wells and Water Undertakings Act, 25 Edmund IX p 36 which requires borough councils and most hundreds of a certain population and size to “establish and maintain” water undertakings. Piped water is generally only available in settlements, and even then, costs money to connect to and use. Many people still rely on wells and even streams and rivers for general water use.

Almost entirely private like most other resources.
Here's a quick rundown of how the whole thing works:

You live in a major urban area or SynUnder, you've got about two hundred options to choose from for everything. Electricity? Fusion, wind, hydro or whatever, prices vary drastically and you can choose from thousands of plans. If you don't like any of em' you can choose the state-run plan (which is really just Synne Industries' corporation side) which charges you probably more than everyone else but won't change.

If you want water it's about the same. There's no real laws on clean water or whatever but if some corporation screws you over for the sake of efficiency the state won't give a damn if you and your colleges roll up to their facilities in a main battle tank. Most of the time corporations know common sense and know that if they don't deliver the good stuff and don't back down the customers will drive everyone into a bloody civil war with not much gained. Same applies to the people buying, in short it means the companies aren't assholes and the buyers aren't whiny needy pieces of crap and everyone is somewhat happy and stable.

The sewage system works the same way.

If you live in a smaller more isolated part of the nation it's about the same but with 90% less choices. To stop people from forming "local monopolies" and jacking up prices to ungodly levels I'd like to direct you to the factbook about that.

Hi, it's been a while. If you're seeing this then it means what I'm working on is not quite done yet. You can still read my old stuff but it's probably not canon anymore. I'll try to get something up soon. It may or may not involve wizards.

It's all private, although some companies might, for example, be partially owned by a state or local government, but they still need to compete with other utility companies on the open market.

All vital utilities are publicly owned, however are occasionally provided by state-owned companies- telephone and internet services is regional, with each region and territory having their own providers, and in some areas heating and electricity are provided by government corporations as well.

All utilities are owned by the government. Electricity, water, telephone, radio, and even the internet, are owned and regulated by the government. Although all the living quarters in Nuibac are apartments/condos, radios, telephones, and internet are built into each residence; however, all of them are connected via landlines (no wireless connections whatsoever). Similar to North Korea, the internet in Nuibac is a closed network, retaining no connection to the outside world.
