Astoria's Q&A thread

Postby -Astoria » Sun Sep 15, 2019 12:04 am

OOC note: This is set up in order to try and garner more interest in the thread, since the other one died from serious neglect.
In order to answer any potential questions that any nation has, Astoria's federal government has decided to tape a question-and-answer programme, with an expected runtime of an infinite amount of minutes.

The house rules are simple:

  1. Please indicate whether the question is IC or OOC.
  2. Just be civil.
  3. Ask anything that you want!

With that all said, have you got any questions about Astoria? Ask them in this thread!

(cheers)

"Why does Astoria refuse to negotiate with states that engage in capital punishment? The criminals we execute have been proven guilty by a legitimate justice system, and I don't see what that has to do with Astoria's foreign policy towards states that do practice this form of punitive justice. Doesn't Astoria believe in the democratic autonomy and sovereignty of other nation-states?"

"Hello, comrades! The Pan-Asiatic States is interested in expanding its foreign direct investments in states it deems industrially competent. The Commission is interested in investing 5 million NSD to the development of Astorian infrastructure, specifically in its tourism sector. We also hope that you could relieve tariffs on any Pan-Asiatic goods that are exported to your nation, if there are any. We will be hiring locally, and this could create thousands of jobs for local Astorians!

Would you be interested in such an arrangement?"

'Dear lord, this question again? And where do we even begin? We've explained it to your comrades countless times.
However, I'll answer it again, but for the very last time;
  • Firstly, we refuse to negotiate with such nations for our national interests, and to help our citizens with whatever help we are able to do; though mostly so that Astorians are not murdered in other lands, bringing it with official government policy. If you want more information on that, then may I recommend that you read the Capital Act factbook?'
  • Secondly, we have proven sources that your "justice" systems are no more than corruption-laden kangaroo courts - how can we trust that if our people were in the dock, they would receive a fair trial?
  • "[...] and I don't see what that has to do with Astoria's foreign policy towards states that do practice this form of punitive justice." As shown endlessly, capital punishment has been proven to never be an act of justice, and more a key example of disproportionate revenge, and it not doing anything to be a deterrent - but I digress.
  • "[...] Doesn't Astoria believe in the democratic autonomy and sovereignty of other nation-states?" The way that you word it sounds as if we are the ones forcing them to abolish a broken and barbaric system - which, in case you have not noticed, we do not. The fact is if they want to trade with us, they're going to have to get rid of it first, or not use it for a long time, and only then will we come to the negotiating table.'

What kind of technologies does the Astorian miltary employ, given the national respect for human life?
