[Saxonia-Venedia]

Male homosexual activity is a criminal offence in Saxonia-Venedia, and, following the influence of the Byzantine Eclogues on Saxon law in the 11th and 12th centuries, acts of sodomy are technically punishable by death. However, since it is difficult to prove that instances of sodomy actually occur, and often take place in private, public instances of or displays of indecent sexual or romantic activity are punished as 'unbefitting Christian bearing' (i.e. public indecency), which is generally punished by imposition of a bote (fine), corporal punishment (more common in rural courts), and/or a short period of custody. Female homosexuality can only be punished as 'unbefitting Christian bearing'. There are also various ecclesiastical penances which may be applied in such cases. In cases where men have been sentenced to death for sodomy, a demonstration of penitence and/or act of contrition almost always sees the condemned person's sentence commuted to hard labour for up to ten years.

Same-sex marriages are therefore not performed in Saxonia-Venedia, nor are they recognised.

Short-term prison sentences. Sodomy is a felony with a maximum sentence of ten years. The normal punishment is often lower than that.

TurtleShroom also forbids buggery, which are "exhibtionist" homosexual displays of public affection*, normally centered on kissing and other more intimate scenarios that do not actually involve sexual intercourse. The maximum sentence is three days in jail, but it is normally punished by fines instead. Buggery is solely a misdemeanor.

The government lists homosexuality as one of several protected paraphilae. Discrimination or criticism of homosexuality can lead to labor camp service or in some extreme cases, execution. However, it should be noted that same-sex activity is essentially classified as a fetish. So while Laredo has harsh penalties for those who do not conform to homosexuality's acceptance, homosexuality is not percieved as having anything to do with marriage rights.

Until the 20th century, marriages were not performed except in arrangements between kuge or samurai in order to solidify agreements between important families. There was never a conception that same sex relationships were unnatural, so when marriage became a state recognized custom, those who desired to become married were able to. Because the genders were often segregated from each other, same sex relationships have always been common even among those who would consider themselves heterosexual.
