What in a story would offend your nation's people?

So if I were to write a story which was deliberately written to offend as many of your world's people as possible, what would happen in the story? What would it be about?

If you were to write a story that would offend the people of Strahcoin:
  • Label the hard-working capitalists as the "evil" characters "oppressing" the blue-collar laborers.
  • Make the United States of America the antagonist.
  • Make the hero stand for socialism, political correctness, and abortion.
  • Make the hero a homosexual transgender who doesn't believe that sex = gender.
  • Everyone who uses a gun in the story is the "enemy".
  • Make it so in the story, CO2 actually does cause dramatic global warming, and solar panels are not super expensive and inefficient.
  • Make the Strahconian Political Correctness Party seem like a force of benevolence, and that all of the innocent children it murdered were merely "fascists".
  • Have the ending of the plot be "...and so the hero led the Political Correctness Party to bring to the world a Golden Age of socialism and political correctness, putting the evil fascist capitalists to justice. THE END"
  • Basically, add blatant anti-conservative lies.
Edit: To have the Strahconian people gather in mobs and charge to your house with torches, imply the lie that human fetuses are not people in your story.

Yannians would be offended by a story if it has a religious extremist as the hero. As a result, several holy books are deeply offensive to Yannians.

The Autobots would win.

It would claim that it's bad to raid things, come up with and act on crooked plans, take bribes...basically saying that it's bad to be a Decepticon!

It would say that Decepticons aren't sapient and/or don't have souls.

It would claim that we are somehow "equal" (instead of superior) to other lifeforms.

It would take the attitude that its writer has a RIGHT to say things that offend us, and make it clear that he/she actually does not expect any retribution. We would surely force the writer to readjust those expectations, by blasting him/her!

It would claim that a society is to be measured by how it treats its weakest members, instead of by how well it keeps its members from being weak to begin with.

Most Valentians are fine with whatever is written, even if it is rather anti towards the government. However, there are some things that absolutely offend:

- Harming individuals, including animals, in a gruesome way. This especially applies to graphic depictions of hurting cats, dogs, etc.

- Encouragement of pedophilia. This is an absolute no-no.

- Detailing ways to break a law in Valentine Z, especially terrorism.

- Encouragement of discrimination. Valentians understand that in the days of old, racism and sexism can be unfortunately common, but in this day and age? Nah, not gonna fly.

This list is not exhaustive.

Our people don't like stories about conquest, we like stories about a homeland to defend.

Also, we (and this may be called a problem by some) have a tendency to like mostly-good protagonists and mostly-bad antagonists. That's not to say we don't appreciate depth, oh we sure do.

We like ambiguity but hate pretense, most of the time.

We tend away from stories with weak women.

by Lillorainen
Recipe for a story likely to make Lillos forget about their calm attitude and turn them into resistant, angry, axe-swinging or potentially gun-grabbing Vikings again:

  • Make the protagonist a guy who insists on Norse faith (or other pagan belief prevalent in the Federation) being a 'false' one, preferably a missionary with the goal to force his own one onto the locals, dreaming of a Crusade 2.0.
  • Also make him insist on women being inferior to men and homosexuality being a sin - preferably entirely ignorant of the fact, that both points don't have any tradition in Lillorainen, and that discrimination based on these sort of things are not, nor have ever been, part of Lillorainian culture.
  • Make him speak High German without any accent and insist on dialects only being spoken by dumb/lesser/lower-class people.
  • Make him a stereotypical 'Moral Police' insisting on freedom being bad.
  • Now create his antagonist, a person (no matter the gender), who insists, that there are too many factories and wide roads around, that a philosophy where people's success depends on nothing else than their own merits ignores issues of social minorities, and that Lillorainen is a dictatorship ruled by a technocratic elite. Put extra ignorance on the policies of environmental protection, the democratic control instruments, and on the historical and cultural nonexistence of discrimination based on whatever feature you might dig out. Make them quote numerous pieces of 'international law' nobody in these parts gives a damn on.
  • Make them another stereotypical 'Moral Police' insisting on freedom being bad.
  • Make them both want to fight each other, and shortly before the climax, let them agree, that this is a horrible place to be in, as long as one is sober, thus make them go into a tavern, order beer - and mix it.
  • Make them go home in an epilogue and write strong-worded condemnation letters from their respective standpoints and spam the Federal Press Office with them until they find some poor sod who is an apprentice, thus has the job of actually caring about it and replying.

Lightians would be a little emotionally hurt, though not violently or extremely offended should the following stories be told:

• Lightians aren’t caring to foreigners, resorting to war at all times.
• Lightians don’t care about the environment and trash it all they want.
• Bluelight is brainwashed to having no other emotions than being nice by its evil leader.

Wouldn't be offended, but we'd probably put the book down and never read it again.

-Having things that are clearly unrealistic and false (we're fine if there's talking animals, but if one of those animals survives a 20-foot drop? Or if one comes from Canada, despite the animal being native to Asia? No way.)
-Painting religion and capitalism in a good light.
-Hell, having any of the protagonists being religious.
-Having someone win through "happiness" and "love". That's bullshit.
-One of those annoying stories about princes and princesses and kings and whatever? No. Death to the monarchy.
-Having a "pure good" or "pure evil" character. Nobody's like that.
-Saying that work isn't important. It is. If the protagonist is inefficient and runs around being useless to progress and production, they're not the protagonist, they're the antagonist.
-Also, feelings. Too much emotion and feelings makes for a bad story.

Radiatians aren't easily offended and most have a fairly black sense of humour, but the one topic which can cause offence is communism: Radiatians view communism the same way that an Israeli would view the holocaust. It was the cause of 10 million deaths in Radiatia.

So basically, writing something about how great communism and socialism is, or even writing about the communist-era purges without a certain amount of sensitivity, might land you an angry mob on your doorstep.

Apart from that, you can pretty much say what you like - freedom of speech in artwork is specifically protected by the constitution.

It is difficult to offend the Freed as a whole, seeing as the society of uploaded minds consists of so many individuals across so many cultures that essentially every set of ethics and values can be found somewhere inside. Even the most shocking or offensive of topics are banal to a large portion of its populace, as are blasphemous, treasonous, or accusatory statements. Nonetheless, the following themes tend to be in contradiction with the decisions that many Freed made and at least a handful of Holder of Dreams' utility functions:

  • The view that permanent mental death is good, necessary, a "natural part of life", part of some "cycle", or important in the slightest.
  • The view that minds in some substrates are innately better than others, for reasons unrelated to their utility functions (say, a claim that organic beings are superior to mechanical ones because of "emotions", or vice versa).
  • The view that the end of the universe is not only inevitable but to be encouraged; excessive nihilism such that one no longer attempts deliberate action to maintain happiness.

More ambiguous but also notable are:

  • The view that uploading entails destroying a mind and creating a new one, and that doing so is a bad thing.
  • The view that destroying a mind and creating a new one is a good thing compared to reshaping an existing mind. The contradiction between this point and the one above is hotly debated among Freed philosophers and Holder of Dreams; ironically, many of the very favorite stories spread throughout the K-Sphere handle one or both sides of this argument.

by Gandoor
Really, the only topic that you could put in a story that would genuinely offend most Gandoorese (and by offended we mean genuinely offended, not just 'eye-rolling "wow this is dumb"' 'offended' where you forget about it a few minutes after reading) would be pretending that the premiership of Alexei Petrikov, who ruled Gandoor effectively as a dictator from 1940 to 1951 was in any way 'good' or a 'positive thing for the Democratic Republic'.

Considering that during Petrikov's 11 years in office, he used the State of Emergency law to grant himself expanded powers, severely curtailed civil rights (ostensibly due to the ongoing wars in Europe and Asia), effectively turned the Forum into a rubber-stamp, established a secret police force to stamp out any dissent to his regime, constructed a system of twenty-two political prisons across the Democratic Republic, persecuted the religious, and is ultimately considered to be responsible for the executions of more than 850,000 citizens with another 350,000 sentenced to political prisons, it should be patently obvious as to why people here would not take it very nicely if you acted as if Petrikov and his rule over Gandoor wasn't a black mark on our nation's history.

(And that isn't even getting into how his regime was considered the catalyst for the Gandoor Civil War in the 1950s, which itself resulted in a post-war economic crisis, which officially lasted until 1972)

A list you definitely include:

-Political Correctness being overused
-Violence being a bad thing
-People acting inherently "Good"
-Democratic Socialism
-Eugenics
-Enforcement of Population Decline (We Bastions take Population decline Seriously. It's a crime to say "The Population is too high in Bastion Remnant.")
-Military and police being killed other than in wartime (Despite being at war often, Soldiers are portrayed as high and mighty. Glorifying the death of societal leaders is a no-no, other than for propaganda)
-Capitalism being a force for peace and happiness
-The Premier being portrayed in a bad light
-Past administrations being portrayed in a good light

- Stories depicting Hypothetical Wars that have no real impartiality but are just blatant ideological power fantasies.

- A bunch of yokels being able to take on a military forces and win without any regard strategy or logistics but because "muh magic guns"

- Every strong and brave character just Magically shares the persons beliefs because, or course only people who agree with you are strong.

- The difficulties and consequences of war being ignored and it being depicted as a glorious beatdown where all the evil people who disagree with you are dragged into the street and killed, which leads to a perfect utopia, because that's how the aftermath of modern wars are.
