As stated in Section (II) of Article (I) of the Portuguese Constitution, the role of Portugal's head of state is as the following:

- -The head of state of Portugal and the Supreme Commander-in-chief of the Portuguese Royal Armed Forces.
- -Electing the Prime Minister and Cabinet members by free will without any interference.
- -Disbanding the Prime Minister and the Parliament by free will in times of national crisis and alike.
- -Approve or disapprove proposals agreed to and forwarded by Parliament members.
- -Outlaw any constitutional acts by the Prime Minister.
- -Being granted full executive and legislative powers in national crisis.
