Our moon was colonized a long time ago, but now that other, more rich sources of materials have been discovered and taken advantage of, it's mostly a tourist destination.

What's this "the" moon stuff? We've been to the moons of many different planets, and even have mining operations or military outposts on some of them. Perhaps you mean the one over Earth?

Decepticon Earth's moon has a full military base with instant attack/defense capabilities since its planet was attacked a few years ago. Because of that, we decided that we needed to greatly improve Earth's security. The base is kept stocked with troops and supplies so that we're always ready to give any would-be cattle rustlers or other interlopers an orbital-level attitude adjustment. Using that moon not only allows us far more capabilities than a space station would, we didn't have to make the superstructure. That made it far less expensive than artificial orbital solutions would have been. (Of course, the planet itself now has powerful bases as well.)
