The process of confirmation is essentially the senate evaluating an heir to the throne and deciding whether or not they are capable enough or have the abilities to have the position of Imperator and that of ruling a large empire. The senate goes down the most current line of succession of only direct Imperial Family members(Children of the Imperator and Siblings and their children) and begins going down the list from the first to the last person on the list. In the event of them not confirming anyone on the direct list, they will receive an expanded line of succession and continue on.

For the most part, the process of confirmation today has simply become more ceremony and rubber stamp than anything else, with only the Princeps Hereditarium having been chosen for the last 19 successions. But in the past, with either large scale events and demands on the empire that required certain skills or abilities to handle, such as war or national crisis. In the event of something like this happening, the Imperial Senate shall choose whoever they deem fit to best serve the empire and have them crowned Imperator instead of the Princeps Hereditarium.
