A monarchical order of succession or right of succession is the sequence of those entitled to hold a high noble office such as ruling monarch or an honor such as a title of nobility in the order in which they stand in line to it when it becomes vacated. This sequence may be regulated through descent or by statute. Primogeniture is the most common and well known way to determine order of succession in monarchies, with the eldest child of the ruling monarch inheriting all of their parent's titles. However, it is not the system used. Some utilize seniority, which prioritizes the younger siblings of the ruling monarch over their children, or electoral systems, in which a body of electors votes on the next monarch. Additionally, most also have some sort of law regulating gender, mainly Agnatic (male only), Agnatic-Cognatic (male preference), Cognatic (equal), Enatic-Cognatic (female preference), and Enatic (female only).

The Caesar is chosen by the current Praesidis and he or she is vetted by the Senate as well as the Collegium Pontificum, although the latter process is largely ceremonial and can be overturned by the Praesidis as they also serve as Pontifex Maximus, or the highest priest.

The Praesidis typically adopts the chosen Caesar as his or her child, even if they are not related at all. This also leads to odd situations, such as in one historical instance, the ruling Praesidis, Julius Jefferson Divi Filus Augustus Dominicus, adopted Galeria Augustus Dominica as his daughter after chosing her as Caesar, even though Galeria was two years older than Jefferson. Upon adoption and selection as heir, the Caesar changes his or her cognomen to match that of the previous Praesidis (the only exception being if either the Praesidis does not adopt the Caesar as their child). The nomen of the Caesar (and thus Praesidis) is always changed to Augustus, however, regardless of gender (the feminine version of Augustus, Augusta, is not used). Upon becoming Praesidis, Divi Filus is added to their name before their nomen.

The closest thing to monarchs among Kawaiians would be our tribal Patriarchs, the hereditary leaders of the various tribes that make up the Kawaiian people. To understand the laws of Patriarchal succession, though, requires some knowledge of Kawaiian family law.

In Kawaiian culture, men and women have clearly defined and separate spheres of influence, usually thought of as "men's work" and "women's work". Kawaiian family law explains those two spheres as "women own property, men manage it". A Kawaiian family's property belongs to the wife; however, her husband has authority to manage it on her behalf. Inheritance is from mother to daughter, which means the management of a Kawaiian family business passes from father-in-law to son-in-law.
