Survey I - Slavery is permitted

By which law or constitutional amendment is the right to own people as slaves enshrined and protected?
Article 1 Section 9 Clause 4 of the Constitution of the Confederate States says: "No bill of attainder, ex post facto law, or law denying or impairing the right of property in negro slaves shall be passed." This guarantee's free citizens the right to own slaves. The confederate constitution remained in law even after we separated from the Confederate States.

For how long in your nation (and / or nations you are descended from) has slavery existed as a legal process?
Since the beginning. We separated from the Confederate States of America which separated from the United States of America which itself separated from the British Empire. Slavery has been legal here since the earliest days of European colonisation.

By what legal process must a private citizen or registered company complete in order to obtain valid ownership of another human?
They simply need to purchase one from a registered slave dealer and have a legal transfer of paperwork

Does the forfeit of this process and the use of another human for forced labour constitute a crime under your nation's law?
Owning a slave without having valid slave papers is a crime, as is purchasing from an unlicensed slave dealer.

Approximately how many slaves are owned legally within the defined boundaries of your nation? How many for each free wo/man?
Confederate New Orleans is a city-state that lacks the agricultural plantation economy of the larger Confederate States, we are largely a trade-port as as such most slaves here are either household slaves of wealthier families or are owned by shipping companies for dock work. There is currently about 1 slave per 50 free citizens.

Approximately how many slaves are owned illegally within the defined boundaries of your nation? How many for each free wo/man?
Almost every household slave is legally obtained and has the proper paperwork but some of the seedier shipping companies have been known to purchase illegal slaves. The number of illegal slaves working on New Orleans docks is not currently known

What punishment (if any) is mandated for those who are involved with the business of illegal slavery?
Those found owning illegal slaves can face large fines and can be banned from owning slaves for a period of five to ten years. Those found illegally selling slaves can face 10 years jail time and a lifetime ban from working in the slave trade

For what tasks, jobs, and roles are slaves typically purchased for any by legal entity?
As stated previously most slaves are typically purchased for either household work by wealthy families or are purchased for dock work. Slaves are typically advertised in one of these two fields.

Are there any occupations slaves are by law prohibited to hold?
Slaves are prohibited from working directly with money.

What are the rights of the master over the slave? Can s/he kill the slave at a whim? Is sexual abuse or exploitation of the slave permitted etc?
While both abuse and killing of a slave are illegal, neither is typically prosecuted.

In accordance to or alongside this, what rights if any do slaves possess under law?
Slaves possess a right to life (though as stated previously, the killing of a slave is rarely ever prosecuted) and a right to be informed of a transfer of ownership

Who is permitted by law to purchase a slave?
Any free citizen or company owned by a free citizen

How evenly are slaves distributed amongst the populace of your nation? Which class owns the most slaves etc.
By numbers most slaves are currently owned by companies not private individuals. Some wealthier families buy slaves for household work and as a status symbol. It is uncommon for middle class families to own slaves.

What type of slaves are in the highest demand? (Scribes, gladiators, sex slaves, personal retainers etc.)
Hard working muscular slaves are purchased for work on docks by shipping companies, more refined slaves or slaves who are unsuitable for manual labor are sold as household slaves.

By what methods are new slaves acquired by your nation for sale to the population?
Over 90% of all slaves are simply born into slavery in Confederate New Orleans and sold by licensed dealers. Approximately 10% are purchased from overseas in other nations where slavery is legal.

Are slaves drawn from any particular racial or ethnic group?
Yes, our slaves are of African descent.

Who, if anyone, is protected by law from being enslaved by any process?
White people cannot be enslaved in Confederate New Orleans.

By what process can be a slave be freed?
A slave can be freed by their owner either through a Document of Freedom or through the will of the owner when they die.

For what crimes, if any, can a citizen of your nation be stripped of legal rights and sold into slavery? How does this impact his or her property or family?
Former slaves who have been freed can be enslaved again if they commit a major offense. This is uncommon in practice.

What sociocultural impact on values, ethics, and philosophy has the legal presence of slavery had upon your population?
Slave ownership is viewed as a major status symbol. To own slaves means you've "made it" in life or come from a well to do family. White supremacy is also a dominant view in Confederate New Orleans society as a result.

Do any movements exist within your nation arguing and agitating for the abolition of slavery, or its replacement with indentured servitude? How popular are they?
Abolitionist movements come and go and their popularity rises and falls over time. The abolitionist movement is closely tied to left wing working class politics in Confederate New Orleans and is largely viewed as a class issue

Has slavery as a social and moral issue been the cause of internal or external conflict with separatists / rebels or foreign powers?
Not internally but slavery has been an issues in dealing with foreign states.

Has your nation had a history of slave rebellions? Which ones were the most prominent?
There was a large slave revolt in 1930 when Confederate New Orleans voted to separate from the Confederate States. It was put down with force

Has your nation had a point in history where slavery was abolished, but then re-instated? How did this happen?
No

Are there any facts, details, or information about legal or illegal slavery in your nation not covered by this questionnaire which you wish to share?

Survey II - Slavery is not permitted

By which law or constitutional amendment is slavery prohibited in your nation? Slavery has been prohibited in Ibica since it's inception, with a prohibition implicit in the Constitution.

How long has slavery been prohibited in your nation? 218 Years

How common is the presence of human trafficking / illegal slavery within the defined boundaries of your nation? It is uncommon, but not unheard of, with the federal government and each state and territory having law enforcement task forces focused on eradicating the practice

How many people are owned and exploited illegally in your nation? How many for each free wo/man? Numbers are of course hard to track here, with nonprofits that aim to help those victimized by human tracking estimating anywhere between 5,000 and 50,000

What punishment is mandated for those who are involved with the business of illegal slavery? Prison sentences varying from a few years to life depending on the severity.

If an illegal slave trade is present, which demographics are most at risk of falling victim to it? Poorer and isolated populations

Is indentured servitude, prison labour, or other forms of correctional or legal debt servitude permitted by your nation's laws? As an alternative to prison service or fines, individuals may be required to complete a number of hours of community service, though this is never intensive physical labor.

From what forms of labour or use, if any, are indentured servants and prisoners protected by law from being subjected to by their creditors or prison authorities? Prisoners are not required to preform mandatory work while incarcerated.

What forms of labour or use, if any, are indentured servants and prisoners typically subjected to by their creditors or prison authorities? None is required, though most prisons do either offer either a work-release program or have jobs at the prison that prisons may choose to do for limited salary. These include laundry, cleaning, usually a workshop where things such as license plates are made.

Is the killing, sexual abuse, or exploitation of a person held by force as an illegal slave considered a worse crime or otherwise scaled to existing homicide and sexual abuse laws? It is not considered a seperate or "worse" crime, you would instead be guilty of multiple crimes simultaneously (i.e. Sexual assault, muder, kidnapping, human trafficking, and unlawful detention)

What sociocultural impact on values, ethics, and philosophy has the prohibition of slavery had upon your population? It hasn't. The prohibition of slavery was the result of societal feelings on slavery in the predecessor nations to Ibica (Albion and the Monroe Republic having already outlawed the practice by the time of federation).

Do any movements exist within your nation arguing and agitating for the reintroduction of slavery, or the introduction of indentured servitude (if not present)? How popular are they? There will always be a small number of extremists agitating for stupid things. They are generally ignored, or simply scoffed at at the most.

Has slavery as a social and moral issue been the cause of internal or external conflict with separatists / rebels or foreign powers? The practice of slavery was one of the reasons behind the Monroe Civil War in 1759 that lead to the independence of the Monroe Republic (Modern day state of East Monroe) and the weakening of the Monroe Empire (Modern Day states of West Monroe, Panamor, and Callahan) that lead to the confederation and then federation the predecessor nations into what is now Ibica

How long has slavery been prohibited in your nation?
    91 years
How common is the presence of human trafficking / illegal slavery within the defined boundaries of your nation?
Official statistics are not easily collected, but the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons has listed Elam as Tier 2; Elam is the country of origin of an embarrassingly large number of trafficked individuals to Arab countries. Significant efforts are being made to stifle human traffickers in Elam.
How many people are owned and exploited illegally in your nation? How many for each free wo/man?
    Statistics unknown.
What punishment is mandated for those who are involved with the business of illegal slavery?

  • Individuals convicted of human trafficking are to be fined 500 thousand Elamite Dinaras (1.64 million USD or 2.33 million NSD).
  • Business entities which engage in or are benefactors of human trafficking are liable for up to 750 thousand Elamite Dinaras (2.46 million USD or 3.5 million NSD).

What sociocultural impact on values, ethics, and philosophy has the prohibition of slavery had upon your population?
Attitudes on slavery have been inconsistent across the Elamite population and have shifted throughout the last century. At the time of its abolition, the majority of Elamite Muslim scholars across all ethnic groups were in agreement that slavery was inconsistent with Quranic morality. In recent decades, however, there has been a reopening of the case for slavery, particularly among Sunni Arabs, likely influenced by Salafi scholars in Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
Do any movements exist within your nation arguing and agitating for the reintroduction of slavery, or the introduction of indentured servitude (if not present)? How popular are they?
No official, legitimate, or legally permitted political or social organisations advocate for the reintroduction of slavery.
Has slavery as a social and moral issue been the cause of internal or external conflict with separatists / rebels or foreign powers?

Did the forfeit of this process and the use of another human for forced labour constitute a crime under your nation's law at this period in time?
The capture of another free person for enslavement was unlawful, but the burden of proof fell upon the captive rather than the captor.

Who was permitted to purchase a slave?
Free Muslim men of the age of majority.

Concubines, personal retainers, bodyguards and soldiers.
By what methods were new slaves acquired by your nation for sale to the population?
Originally prisoners of war were taken as slaves; more recently most were imported persons from the Somali and Swahili coasts.

Did your nation have a history of slave rebellions? Which ones were most prominent?
The territory of modern Elam was at the epicentre of the 9th century Zanj Rebellion, which began as a slave revolt by the Bantu speaking Zanj people in lower Mesopotamia and spread to most of modern southern Iraq and Elam.

Do any movements exist within your nation arguing and agitating for the reintroduction of slavery, or the introduction of indentured servitude (if not present)? How popular are they? No one goes that far, but some forces argue for more exploitative labor practices

Has slavery as a social and moral issue been the cause of internal or external conflict with separatists / rebels or foreign powers? It was among the gripes with the Spanish Empire during the independence movement, but Independent Tropico has never been divided deeply on the illegality of slavery

Survey II - Slavery is not permitted

By which law or constitutional amendment is slavery prohibited in your nation? Currently the Modern Slavery Act of 2001.

How long has slavery been prohibited in your nation? His Majesty King Bjornholm IV abolished slavery in 1778.

How common is the presence of human trafficking / illegal slavery within the defined boundaries of your nation? Extremely rare, although preventative measures and checks are undertaken in rural industries i.e. agriculture.

How many people are owned and exploited illegally in your nation? How many for each free wo/man? 1 in 8000 Akrans (1350).

What punishment is mandated for those who are involved with the business of illegal slavery? Minimum 5 years each person submitted to false imprisonment, and a minimum but unlimited fine of €12,500.

If an illegal slave trade is present, which demographics are most at risk of falling victim to it? Predominantly foreign nationals and the disabled.

Is indentured servitude, prison labour, or other forms of correctional or legal debt servitude permitted by your nation's laws? No, although prisoners in state prisons can volunteer into work programs operated by the prison service.

From what forms of labour or use, if any, are indentured servants and prisoners protected by law from being subjected to by their creditors or prison authorities? N/A

What forms of labour or use, if any, are indentured servants and prisoners typically subjected to by their creditors or prison authorities? N/A

Is the killing, sexual abuse, or exploitation of a person held by force as an illegal slave considered a worse crime or otherwise scaled to existing homicide and sexual abuse laws? No, they are stacked with MSA (Modern slavery act) charges. For example: If someone is found to have been in contravention of the MSA by holding 2 people and forcing them to do labour, and one revealed they were sexually assaulted, the suspect would be arrested for the following; 2 counts of operating in contravention of the Modern Slavery Act, 2 counts of false imprisonment, 1 count of sexual assault.

What sociocultural impact on values, ethics, and philosophy has the prohibition of slavery had upon your population? When slavery was abolished, farming and heavy industrial slave owners refused to accept His Majesty's decree, which resulted in their arrest and even executions, which at the time were not abolished (until 1800), after slave owners began to obey the ruling, the only impact was economical.

Do any movements exist within your nation arguing and agitating for the reintroduction of slavery, or the introduction of indentured servitude (if not present)? How popular are they? No recognised movements exist in the view of the government.

Has slavery as a social and moral issue been the cause of internal or external conflict with separatists / rebels or foreign powers? No,

Are there any facts, details, or information about legal or illegal slavery in your nation not covered by this questionnaire which you wish to share?

This half of the survey deals with slavery as an institution in your nation's past - if slavery has never been permitted, feel free to delete this section.

What legal process in the past did a private citizen or registered company have to go through in order to obtain valid ownership of another human? Usually just a bill of sale between the purchaser and the slave trader, there was no requirements by law.

Did the forfeit of this process and the use of another human for forced labour constitute a crime under your nation's law at this period in time? No,

How many slaves on average over the period of legal enslavement were there in relation to free wo/men? The true amount cannot be recorded or guessed, as these numbers were never taken back in the 1700s.

What punishment was mandated for those who were involved with the business of illegal slavery? Slavery was in the history of the Scandanavian Empire which Akrafjall broke off from, slavery came with them, so was never made 'legal' but eventually abolished totally.

For what tasks, jobs, and roles were slaves typically purchased for by any legal entity? Farming, heavy labour, groundskeeping, janitorial duties, house staff.

Were there any occupations slaves were by law prohibited to hold? Usually slaves were not citizens of Akrafjall, so would've been prevented from public and civil offices if recognised as such.

What were the rights of the master over the slave? Could s/he kill the slave at a whim? Was sexual abuse or exploitation of the slave permitted etc? More than likely, His Majesty's court and his officers kept out of the business of slavery.

In accordance to or alongside this, what rights if any did slaves possess under law? As previously mentioned, slavery was never addressed by His Majesty.

Who was permitted to purchase a slave? It would depend on who the slave trader wanted to trade with.

How evenly were slaves distributed amongst the populace of your nation? Which class owned the most slaves etc? Mostly the upper-class/land owners and some branches of royalty.

What type of slaves were in the highest demand? (Scribes, gladiators, sex slaves, personal retainers etc.) Slaves able to perform simple labour.

By what methods were new slaves acquired by your nation for sale to the population? Regularly brought by foreign slave traders into the country, how these men acquired their slaves was unknown, but more than likely through raids/smash-and-grabs.

Were slaves drawn from any particular racial or ethnic group?

Who, if anyone, was protected by law from being enslaved by any process? As previously mentioned, there was no law permitting and protecting slavery outright, so technically anyone could be a slave.

By what process could a slave be freed? Through their own methods, their was no legal process.

For what crimes, if any, could a citizen of your nation be stripped of legal rights and sold into slavery? How did this impact his or her property and family? This would only be if they were sentenced to imprisonment or indentured servitude by a judge, but this would be to His Majesty's prisons.

What sociocultural impact on values, ethics, and philosophy did the legal presence of slavery have on your population? Certain slave owners wanted to reacquaint themselves with the ways of the old Scandinavian Empire, this would be one of their flawed traditions. Otherwise the impact was mainly economical, actual workers could be paid more, possibly raising them to a higher social class.

How did slavery in your nation end? Were any movements arguing and agitating for the abolition of slavery or its replacement with indentured servitude play a role in this? How popular was the abolition? A coordinated outbreak of violence happened, slaves started turning on their owners to prompt official action, resulting in hundreds of deaths. It is said that several prominent members of the King's court played a part in 'egging on' the group in the background. The King eventually decreed that slavery be abolished in 1778.

Did your nation have a history of slave rebellions? Which ones were most prominent? Only historically towards the end, it started to become prominent in 1772, as described above.

Did your nation abolish slavery before, but re-instate it? How did this happen? No, it was abolished in 1778 and officially that was the end of it.

Survey II - Slavery is not permitted

By which law or constitutional amendment is slavery prohibited in your nation?
Arcticle 34 of the PenguinLand constitution upholds the individual freedoms of each individual and citizen and thier right to reists and be assisted in their resistance by the government or state against their unlawful and unconsentual servitude. (Amended to exempt criminal offenders although they are not slaves but labourers).
Article 5 of , also states that Humans are not a commodity to be sold, bought or owned.

How long has slavery been prohibited in your nation?
Since it's inception, so around 71 years.

How common is the presence of human trafficking / illegal slavery within the defined boundaries of your nation?
Not too common, the penalty for human trafficking is extremely harsh and there isn't a market for it as the buyer would also be punished just as harshly.

How many people are owned and exploited illegally in your nation? How many for each free wo/man?
It is a miniscule amount, possibly there no illegally owned people in the nation, although National Statistics is yet to confirm that.

What punishment is mandated for those who are involved with the business of illegal slavery?
Life sentence with no chance of parole, sometimes possibly even labour camp service for 20 years and the rest a life sentence in a correctional prison.

If an illegal slave trade is present, which demographics are most at risk of falling victim to it?
There are possibly none present, but if we are to speculate foreign women would be most at risk.

Is indentured servitude, prison labour, or other forms of correctional or legal debt servitude permitted by your nation's laws?
Prison labour is applied yet only for a maximum of 20 years and human rights and neccesities are guranteed. It is only applied for severe crimes usually violent rioters and dissenters. The Prison camp population is only around 600. Indentured Servitude is illegal as per the articles of constitution.

From what forms of labour or use, if any, are indentured servants and prisoners protected by law from being subjected to by their creditors or prison authorities?
Only medium labour is allowed. So semi-indrustrial work is the usual maximum permitted. The labour hours must not exceed 8-10 hrs a day.

What forms of labour or use, if any, are indentured servants and prisoners typically subjected to by their creditors or prison authorities?
Semi-indrustrial work, including forestry, lumber and timber yard work, manufacturing and agricultural work.

Is the killing, sexual abuse, or exploitation of a person held by force as an illegal slave considered a worse crime or otherwise scaled to existing homicide and sexual abuse laws?
The crime would be considered as a whole, so the penalty would'nt stack just be issued as one.

What sociocultural impact on values, ethics, and philosophy has the prohibition of slavery had upon your population?
It's created several protectionary labour laws and help protect worker's rights from exploitation.

Do any movements exist within your nation arguing and agitating for the reintroduction of slavery, or the introduction of indentured servitude (if not present)? How popular are they?
Currently there are none, if there were arguably they would be shut down.

Has slavery as a social and moral issue been the cause of internal or external conflict with separatists / rebels or foreign powers?
No, the prohibtion of slavery has not had an effect on internal or international relations.

Are there any facts, details, or information about legal or illegal slavery in your nation not covered by this questionnaire which you wish to share?
No, they seemed to be all covered here.

Survey I - Slavery is permitted

By which law or constitutional amendment is the right to own people as slaves enshrined and protected?
They are enshrined in the constitutions of 3 out of Auspelia's 8 states.

For how long in your nation (and / or nations you are descended from) has slavery existed as a legal process?
Since the 1800s

By what legal process must a private citizen or registered company complete in order to obtain valid ownership of another human?
Be over the age of 21, present the amount of agreed upon money to purchase the human, and then register that with the local and state level government authority. They must also be a resident of one of the 3 states in Auspelia that permits slavery i.e Capricornia, Kingsland, or Eastern Auspelia.

Does the forfeit of this process and the use of another human for forced labour constitute a crime under your nation's law?
Yes

Approximately how many slaves are owned legally within the defined boundaries of your nation? How many for each free wo/man?
Around 5.5 million

Approximately how many slaves are owned illegally within the defined boundaries of your nation? How many for each free wo/man?
Since they are owned illegally it is impossible to know the true number but state and confederal/federal authorities put it between 7-11 million.

What punishment (if any) is mandated for those who are involved with the business of illegal slavery?
Jail time

For what tasks, jobs, and roles are slaves typically purchased for any by legal entity?
Farming the sugar and fruit plantations in Auspelia's tropical northern states, farming on the desert interior meat stations, and general housekeeping.

Are there any occupations slaves are by law prohibited to hold?
Slaves are not allowed to have any other jobs while they are slaves. When they are freed, they may then have any job they so desire, like any other Auspelian.

What are the rights of the master over the slave? Can s/he kill the slave at a whim? Is sexual abuse or exploitation of the slave permitted etc?
In the states of Auspelia that permit slavery, the owner has total control over their "property" so yes, they may murder or sexually abuse a slave and not face repercussions by the law for that.

In accordance to or alongside this, what rights if any do slaves possess under law?
None.

Who is permitted by law to purchase a slave?
Any Auspelian citizen in the states of Capricornia, Kingsland or Eastern Auspelia that is over the age of 21.

How evenly are slaves distributed amongst the populace of your nation? Which class owns the most slaves etc.
Upper class, followed by the middle class.

What type of slaves are in the highest demand? (Scribes, gladiators, sex slaves, personal retainers etc.)
Auspelia does not have classifications for slaves, therefore, they are mandated by law to do whatever their owner tells them to. If they need to farm, they farm. If they're going to work in the mines then they must do that. Essentially their lives and work are decided by their owner.

By what methods are new slaves acquired by your nation for sale to the population?
Most slaves are born into their role within society and descend from the "first generation" who were bought to Auspelia in the 1800s. However, some are also smuggled into the slave states.

Are slaves drawn from any particular racial or ethnic group?
Most slaves in Auspelia are Indian, Melanesian, Polynesian, African, Indigenous Auspelian, or South American Latino.

Who, if anyone, is protected by law from being enslaved by any process?
Any ethnically European citizen or resident within Auspelia cannot be made a slave. By Auspelian federal law, no one (including non-whites) can be taken or kidnapped from a non-slave state and then sold into slavery within a slave state, however, this practice does occur and can be very hard to prosecute under Auspelian state law due to a conflict of interest between the state and federal constitution.

By what process can be a slave be freed?
By their owner freeing them and giving them "freed-slave" papers and registering this with the correct and appropriate state-level authority.

For what crimes, if any, can a citizen of your nation be stripped of legal rights and sold into slavery? How does this impact his or her property or family?
Auspelian citizens in non-slave states cannot be sold into slavery for any reason or crime. In Auspelia's slave states (Capricornia, Kingsland and Eastern Auspelia), an ethnically non-white person who is not a slave can be sold into slavery by a state level jury for an adequate reason as a punishment for a crime, However, the jury has to be unanimous in its verdict, and if it isn't then the person cannot be sold into slavery.

What sociocultural impact on values, ethics, and philosophy has the legal presence of slavery had upon your population?
The use of slavery in Auspelia has divided opinion throughout the country. In non-slave states, there have been massive protests and marches for reform and the complete banning of the practice, with many politicians in Congress voicing similar opinions. This is easier said than done though because of the way the governmental system in Auspelia is set up. The 3 slave states have the practice enshrined into their constitutions as a fundamental right for residents in those states. In addition, the confederal/federal constitution outlines that it should be determined by the states as to whether slavery is permitted within their boundaries or not. Due to this, the federal government cannot really outlaw the practice without infringing on the states constitutions.

Do any movements exist within your nation arguing and agitating for the abolition of slavery, or its replacement with indentured servitude? How popular are they?
In non-slave states, there is the National Organisation for the Abolition of Slavery (NOAS) and this is the major lobby/interest group rallying for the end to slavery within Auspelia. NOAS is very popular among college students, and people within non-slave states. Some left-wing politicians are also members of NOAS.

Has slavery as a social and moral issue been the cause of internal or external conflict with separatists / rebels or foreign powers?
It has caused some tension between Auspelia's strategic allies such as the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. In those countries, the pressure is mounting on their governments to impose sanctions on Auspelia for its use of slavery, or embargo Auspelian goods in those countries. There was also an attempted bombing of Auspelia's embassy in New Zealand by a radical left-wing group.

Has your nation had a history of slave rebellions? Which ones were the most prominent?
The 1960s uprising was the only slave uprising in Auspelia's history but it was quickly crushed by state-level law enforcement agencies in Eastern Auspelia, Capricornia, and Kingsland.

Has your nation had a point in history where slavery was abolished, but then re-instated? How did this happen?
No

Are there any facts, details, or information about legal or illegal slavery in your nation not covered by this questionnaire which you wish to share?
No

An individual who commits a crime against someone held as an illegal slave would be punished for both violating the laws prohibiting slavery and whatever crime they committed against the individual.

What sociocultural impact on values, ethics, and philosophy has the prohibition of slavery had upon your population? Considering how long ago slavery was abolished, it has had little to no impact on modern Aikolandais society.

What legal process in the past did a private citizen or registered company have to go through in order to obtain valid ownership of another human? Slaves had to be purchased through government-run slave markets or, if the slave(s) was being traded or sold from one master to another, the transfer of the slave had to be done under the auspices of an official slave trader.

Were slaves drawn from any particular racial or ethnic group? No

Who, if anyone, was protected by law from being enslaved by any process? The enslavement of any Catholic and later any Christian in general was prohibited. (Slaves who converted to Catholicism were not granted their freedom, however, as it was expected that their master would educate them in the ways of the Catholic Church)

By what process could a slave be freed? A slave could be freed of their master brought them to a slave trader and declared their intent to grant freedom to the slave trader. If the slave was a convert to Catholicism, they would be also granted citizenship, otherwise they would only be granted their freedom.

For what crimes, if any, could a citizen of your nation be stripped of legal rights and sold into slavery? How did this impact his or her property and family? Citizens could not be enslaved.

Survey II - Slavery is not permitted

By which law or constitutional amendment is slavery prohibited in your nation?
It is explicitly stated within the constitution of Kodagok that any form of slavery is illegal.

How long has slavery been prohibited in your nation?
Since the formation of the modern Kodagok state in 1745 AD.

How common is the presence of human trafficking / illegal slavery within the defined boundaries of your nation?
The trafficking of specifically full blooded kodagoks is unfortunately fairly common in the southern states. Though it still happens, the amount of human trafficking in the north is less than the south.

How many people are owned and exploited illegally in your nation? How many for each free wo/man?
It’s estimated that there are around 250-500 people currently enslaved within our borders, however the amount of people trafficked outside of our borders is expected to be much more.

What punishment is mandated for those who are involved with the business of illegal slavery?
Those found to have participated in human trafficking and slavery are to be charged with 50 years of prison.

If an illegal slave trade is present, which demographics are most at risk of falling victim to it?
Victims of human trafficking tend to be ethnic kodagoks who live under the poverty line.

Is indentured servitude, prison labour, or other forms of correctional or legal debt servitude permitted by your nation's laws?
While much debate has been had as to the legality of these practices, they have all been found to be in conflict with the constitution and thus illegal.

While the murder or sexual abuse of an enslaved person is not a separate crime, human trafficking charges would be tacked on top of any other charges. Exploitation is considered to be participating in human trafficking, thus in that case, only human trafficking charges would apply.

What sociocultural impact on values, ethics, and philosophy has the prohibition of slavery had upon your population?
The idea that each and every person is each other’s equal in modern Kodagok has it’s roots in the rejection of slavery in the constitution of the modern Kodagok state. In addition, these basic ideals have led to a strong left wing in our country today.

Do any movements exist within your nation arguing and agitating for the reintroduction of slavery, or the introduction of indentured servitude (if not present)? How popular are they?
There are small far right groups in the country that advocate for the enslavement of non-natives, though the majority of the population sees these folks as incredibly fringe and backwards.

Has slavery as a social and moral issue been the cause of internal or external conflict with separatists / rebels or foreign powers?
The countries neighboring us to the south, who had long profited from slave trade in our region, were outraged at our Declaration of Independence and our rejection of slavery, leading to the slave wars of the mid to late 18th century.

Are there any facts, details, or information about legal or illegal slavery in your nation not covered by this questionnaire which you wish to share?
Our nation’s wholesale rejection of slavery stems from how our race was, for thousands of years, used as slaves by the invaders from the Middle East and North Africa.

Survey II - Slavery is not permitted

By which law or constitutional amendment is slavery prohibited in your nation? Originally by the Freedom Act of 1839, and then again by the True Liberty Act of 1931.

How long has slavery been prohibited in your nation? This past April marks 88 years without slavery, and this past February marks 11 years without indentured servitude.

How common is the presence of human trafficking / illegal slavery within the defined boundaries of your nation? Fairly common. Though the notion of racial slavery never truly gained a lot of traction in the Hellands, enslavement as a means of paying off debts was an ingrained part of the culture.

How many people are owned and exploited illegally in your nation? How many for each free wo/man? 1 out of every 150.

What punishment is mandated for those who are involved with the business of illegal slavery? Depending on the nature of the enslavement and the status of the individual, punishment can range anywhere from severe fines to life in prison.

If an illegal slave trade is present, which demographics are most at risk of falling victim to it? The poor almost exclusively. Women originally were far more prevalent than men, but since the legalization of prostitution the ratio of 1 man for every 20 women has dropped to 1 man for every 2 women.

Is indentured servitude, prison labour, or other forms of correctional or legal debt servitude permitted by your nation's laws? No, it has been illegal since 2008 thanks to the Servitude Reform Act.

From what forms of labour or use, if any, are indentured servants and prisoners protected by law from being subjected to by their creditors or prison authorities? Prisoners recieve very little protection. After the Servitude Reform Act, indentured servants are practically no longer allowed, ensuring contracts do not force an employee to work for a specified amount of time and without specified tasks.

What forms of labour or use, if any, are indentured servants and prisoners typically subjected to by their creditors or prison authorities? Prisoners can be required to do almost anything, including prostitution. Indentured servants, as stated before, are a thing of the past.

Is the killing, sexual abuse, or exploitation of a person held by force as an illegal slave considered a worse crime or otherwise scaled to existing homicide and sexual abuse laws? Not necessarily no. By law, yes, it is worse. However, in practice, many Helsh judges will treat it as though it were just another run-of-the-mill murder or sexual abuse case.

What sociocultural impact on values, ethics, and philosophy has the prohibition of slavery had upon your population? It has enforced a greater notion of equality among the populus, but the idea that people must pay back their debts to their debtors in any way possible remains a prevalent part of society.

Do any movements exist within your nation arguing and agitating for the reintroduction of slavery, or the introduction of indentured servitude (if not present)? How popular are they? There is an existing movement to reintroduce indentured servitude. It is most prevalent in the majority political party, the Golden Party, in which 41% of the members of that party in the Rijkstag are in favor of it. Slavery is far far less popular.

Has slavery as a social and moral issue been the cause of internal or external conflict with separatists / rebels or foreign powers? It has been a contentious issue among foreign powers though has often been overlooked in the past due to the Brague's great wealth and diplomacy. As for separatists, it has been a consistent issue and many movements were founded to fight slavery and indentured servitude.

Are there any facts, details, or information about legal or illegal slavery in your nation not covered by this questionnaire which you wish to share? Slavry only became truly institutionalized with the rise of imperialism in the Hellands and the later regime of the nation as a kingdom. However, no ethnic, religious, or cultural group was ever specifically tolerated, and while some could be born a slave, the child of that slave could not be enslaved (at least not for the same reasons their grandparents or parents were). Indentured servitude, however, has always been a major part of Helsh culture and while the movement to end this oppression began in the late 1950s, it took many many decades for indentured servitude to finally be made illegal.

This half of the survey deals with slavery as an institution in your nation's past - if slavery has never been permitted, feel free to delete this section.

What legal process in the past did a private citizen or registered company have to go through in order to obtain valid ownership of another human? As stated before, slavery was almost always an outcome if a debtor could not pay their debts OR if the person was a registered criminal. If the crime or debt was great enough and the "sentenced slavery" extended beyond that person's lifetime, a person's spouse and/or children or future children could also be enslaved, but not their grandchildren.

Did the forfeit of this process and the use of another human for forced labour constitute a crime under your nation's law at this period in time? Yes, but not a serious one until the end of the monarchy.

How many slaves on average over the period of legal enslavement were there in relation to free wo/men? 1 for every 300

What punishment was mandated for those who were involved with the business of illegal slavery? often prison time, however greater conspiracy and greater involvement in black market slavery could mean the death penalty.

For what tasks, jobs, and roles were slaves typically purchased for by any legal entity? Forced labour, often manual, sometimes domestic. Slaves as prostitutes were also common, as were bodyguards and mercenaries sometimes.

Were there any occupations slaves were by law prohibited to hold? Not really, but very rarely were slaves put in any position that would allow them to operate over free men/women

What were the rights of the master over the slave? Could s/he kill the slave at a whim? Was sexual abuse or exploitation of the slave permitted etc? He could not kill a slave, but sexual abuse and exploitation was legal.

In accordance to or alongside this, what rights if any did slaves possess under law? Slaves possessed little rights at all, beyond the right to room and board.

Who was permitted to purchase a slave? Anyone, though the prices of slaves often meant that only the wealthy could own them

How evenly were slaves distributed amongst the populace of your nation? Which class owned the most slaves etc? the upper classes almost certainly owned the most slaves. Most people in the lower 60% never once owned a slave.

What type of slaves were in the highest demand? (Scribes, gladiators, sex slaves, personal retainers etc.) Laborers

By what methods were new slaves acquired by your nation for sale to the population? Often they were imported from the colonies or another nations.

Were slaves drawn from any particular racial or ethnic group? No, though during the imperialist and colonial periods the majority of slaves were not white and in fact came from the colonies, mostly because natives of those lands were often poor and rarely saw profit from the work they did.

Who, if anyone, was protected by law from being enslaved by any process? The wealthiest.

By what process could a slave be freed? If their master freed them or by observation of a court, they had fulfilled their sentence early.

For what crimes, if any, could a citizen of your nation be stripped of legal rights and sold into slavery? How did this impact his or her property and family? Often if a citizen could not pay their debts, they were placed into slavery. This meant that all assets (money, property, land) had already been seized by their creditor and was deemed not substantial enough to pay off a debt. Members of their family could also be placed into slavery, if they consented, to reduce the sentenced period of enslavement.

What sociocultural impact on values, ethics, and philosophy did the legal presence of slavery have on your population? (see above)

How did slavery in your nation end? Were any movements arguing and agitating for the abolition of slavery or its replacement with indentured servitude play a role in this? How popular was the abolition? The institution of slavery in the Hellands became very broken and unworkable in the Helsh Anarchy (188-1825). The Brague, as a city-state during the time period, was firmly against slavery, and part of its policy when trying to unite the country called for the abolition of slavery. When the Republic was founded, this proved difficult due to many cantons wishing to maintain slavery. However, after 25 years of slave-revolts and public cries for action, enough support was gained to pass the Freedom Act of 1839

Did your nation have a history of slave rebellions? Which ones were most prominent? Yes, the most prominent being Wilkin Manen's Revolt in Zenland, which lasted 4 months and ended with the 1839 Freedom Act.

Did your nation abolish slavery before, but re-instate it? How did this happen? Slavery was reestablished in 1914 by Stadholder Ferdinand Scenk, a leader who was staunchly nationalist and monarchist at a time when those sentiments were coming back as a popularity. It was a very unpopular decision, as were many of Scenk's policies, and eventually lead to the Helsh Civil War. It was abolished once again fairly soon after his death and the subsequent election of Stadholder Esther Zeld.

b]Survey I - Slavery is permitted[/b]

By which law or constitutional amendment is the right to own people as slaves enshrined and protected?

There is no constitution nor a law. Officially Korea claims to be a communist state, but there are in fact many capitalists, just under a different name. The slave trade is not regulated nor prohibited.

For how long in your nation (and / or nations you are descended from) has slavery existed as a legal process?

After the Great Revolution of 1972, wherein the illegitimate capitalist US Puppet South Korean government was overthrown by Great Leader Supreme Liberator Seong ho Rhee, after 15 years or so, laws forbidding slavery were formally removed after a congress of elite petitioned for it's removal.

By what legal process must a private citizen or registered company complete in order to obtain valid ownership of another human?

Slaves must be sold. Children of slaves are considered property of the slave holder, and they may be sold. The only way a slave who was not born as a slave can be acquired is through a lengthy court session. This prevents the creation of "noveau-riche" who seek to make money and climb the social ladder via those means. Technically, personal property is illegal in Korea. However, this law really only applies to the poor. The well established elite are allowed to own as much property as they wish.

Does the forfeit of this process and the use of another human for forced labour constitute a crime under your nation's law?

No

Approximately how many slaves are owned legally within the defined boundaries of your nation? How many for each free wo/man?

It is estimated that 15%-34% of the population is what would be defined as a "slave". "Workers" (which could also be classified as a slave) make up 12% of the population. The remaining population are urbanites, who are treated like insects, and the 0.5% which is the elite.

Approximately how many slaves are owned illegally within the defined boundaries of your nation? How many for each free wo/man?

Since there is a constant rotation of housing, slave trade among the poor class is nonexistent. The Labor Credit system, requires for the exchange of currency, a special government issued code, also ensures that they do not have the currency to be able to make such trades. The average urbanite owns no property. The house rotation system ensures that they are at least given a bed, however this is often overrun with pests and cockroaches. Every apartment has a state issued radio/tv set which is constantly blaring propaganda. There are also tap water dispensers in every apartment complex, which dispense tap water which is ridden with an enormous amount of painkiller. This painkiller which was especially crafted by the Korean government in laboratories opens the mind to suggestion and puts it in a constant "dream-like" state. The people, therefore, have no desire to conduct illegal operations, such as slave trade.

What punishment (if any) is mandated for those who are involved with the business of illegal slavery?

Immediate execution in private chambers. Their name is then scrubbed from existence. This is not common as illegal slavery is practically non-existent.

Survey I - Slavery is permitted

By which law or constitutional amendment is the right to own people as slaves enshrined and protected? Under the Ásafolcmōtwrit (Constitution), as well as several old written codes from the Efergaisa, the economic benefit to purchase and sell enslaved persons remains both lawful and socially legitimate.

For how long in your nation (and / or nations you are descended from) has slavery existed as a legal process? For as long as the Evergarian people and their ancestors have been around, institutional slavery has always been a legal process.

By what legal process must a private citizen or registered company complete in order to obtain valid ownership of another human? Private citizens and companies must provide a completed series of forms called Thralldom Manifests, with the enslaved person's or many people's initials, signatures, fingerprints, and registered serial numbers. These would be taken to a special slaveowner's judicial administration for the documents to be verified as legal and legitimate.

Does the forfeit of this process and the use of another human for forced labour constitute a crime under your nation's law? Yes, but only a capital misdemeanor subjected to payment of high fines.

Approximately how many slaves are owned legally within the defined boundaries of your nation? How many for each free wo/man? Native Evergarian freewomen may lawfully own up to 50 slaves, while Native Evergarian freemen may lawfully own as many slaves as can be afforded.

Approximately how many slaves are owned illegally within the defined boundaries of your nation? How many for each free wo/man? As erstwhile mentioned, Native Evergarian freewomen may lawfully own up to 50 slaves maximum. Owning an excessive number constitutes a financial criminal offense, which is punishable by high fines, forcible confiscation of owned slaves by the state, and/or revocation of slaveowner privileges.

What punishment (if any) is mandated for those who are involved with the business of illegal slavery? (Refer Above)

For what tasks, jobs, and roles are slaves typically purchased for any by legal entity? The most popular work slaves perform are farming, housekeeping, sanitation, underground mining, commercial fishing, and gardening.

Are there any occupations slaves are by law prohibited to hold? Because slaves are not equal to free citizens, they shall not be permitted to work in professions such as military soldiers, healthcare staffers, politicians, bankers, police officers, and teachers in public education.

What are the rights of the master over the slave? Can s/he kill the slave at a whim? Is sexual abuse or exploitation of the slave permitted etc? By the Evergarian standard, slaves are considered "hardly better than subhumans" and have no rights whatsoever. Slavemasters by stark contrast have complete, incontestable authority over his mannish property: they may treat them as humanely or inhumanely as they wish. All laws against murder, rape, abuse, and so on do not apply to protect a slave, so pretty much the slavemaster can do anything he wishes to the slave without legal reprecussions.

In accordance to or alongside this, what rights if any do slaves possess under law? (N/A)

Who is permitted by law to purchase a slave? Only native Evergarian men and women at least 21 years old may purchase slaves.

How evenly are slaves distributed amongst the populace of your nation? Which class owns the most slaves etc. Due to the expensive nature regarding the slave market, the majority of slaveowning Evergarians involve the higher-upper class, the aristocracy, several members of the government, and the superwealthy. Some working-class, and even some lower-middle class citizens own slaves but far less many than their competitors.

What type of slaves are in the highest demand? (Scribes, gladiators, sex slaves, personal retainers etc.) For several years recently, the industries in the highest demand for slave labor are agriculture, manual construction, and coalmining.

By what methods are new slaves acquired by your nation for sale to the population? Many slaves become slaves through a variety of circumstances: private business deals with foreign human trafficking circles, military kidnappings of suspected or known terrorists, community disassociation of undesirables, internment in concentration and labor camps, and even by family sales.

Are slaves drawn from any particular racial or ethnic group? Slaves may be of any racial or ethnic group, including Native Evergarian, who are Teutons.

Who, if anyone, is protected by law from being enslaved by any process? Members of the government may not be enslaved at any point anytime.

By what process can be a slave be freed? Slaves may become freedmen or freedwomen under two conditions--if his or her slavemaster delegitimizes the Thralldom Manifest and personally releases him or her from ownership, or, if the slavemaster dies and has not willed him or her to another owner.

For what crimes, if any, can a citizen of your nation be stripped of legal rights and sold into slavery? How does this impact his or her property or family? Many crimes: the most notable include Domestic Violence Against Parents, Religious Vandalism, Serial Manslaughter, and Conspiracy to Commit Terrorism.

What sociocultural impact on values, ethics, and philosophy has the legal presence of slavery had upon your population? Slavery has only reinforced the sociocultural acceptance of patriarchy, anti-egalitarianism, elitist governance, hierarchical order, and disregard toward international law.

Do any movements exist within your nation arguing and agitating for the abolition of slavery, or its replacement with indentured servitude? How popular are they? Both reformist and abolitionist movements exist, but they are each fringe movements, gathering less than 5% of local support and have a reputation for repeatedly failing to kickstart change.

Has slavery as a social and moral issue been the cause of internal or external conflict with separatists / rebels or foreign powers? Most of the opposition to Evergarian slavery comes from the international community. Sometimes it has caused a breakdown in diplomacy, economic partnerships, and trade deals.

Has your nation had a history of slave rebellions? Which ones were the most prominent? Yes, mostly before and during the medieval period, although they were frequently small, disorganized, and crushed within 48 hours. One of the most memorable happened in what is modern-day Cismichioi, Moldova, whereat a wealthy Gothic slavemaster working for an enterprise under the Efergaisa was ambushed and murdered by five of his African slaves and had his home set on fire. For hours, all 126 of his slaves went on an emotional rampage, attacking Byzantine royals, Gothic laypeople, and ruining plantations and homes. Dozens of children were amongst them. Eventually, the rebellion lost momentum, and the whole party was cornered by a community square and massacred by East Roman infantrymen.

Has your nation had a point in history where slavery was abolished, but then re-instated? How did this happen? Slavery has yet to have ever been abolished in the country.

Are there any facts, details, or information about legal or illegal slavery in your nation not covered by this questionnaire which you wish to share? (N/A)

Survey II - Slavery is not permitted

By which law or constitutional amendment is slavery prohibited in your nation?
Article 8 of the constitution prohibits slavery in all forms

Since 11 April, 1888. On that date the Supreme Revolutionary Council declared that slavery shall again be illegal. Prior to that date slavery was declared illegal on 9 July, 1819 by Royal order of Empress Elise.

Slavery was reinstated on 28 August, 1839 and would continue until 11 April, 1888. However while slavery was declared legal, the slave trade was still prohibited. Being officially prohibited by the Halting of Slavery Act of 1809.

Prior to 1819 no such process existed.

Prior to 1888 slavery was on its way out after the 1868 slave revolt. In 1872 slavery was reduced to just manual and agricultural labor with all other slaves being transferred to indentured servitude. In 1878 the manual and agricultural slaves where declared to be serfs and not slaves though nothing really changed.

In addition the amount of slaves was cut down from a high of 18% of the population to just 5% of the population when slavery was declared illegal.

Did your nation have a history of slave rebellions? Which ones were most prominent?

Several. The most prominent and important one was the Slave Revolt of 1868 which saw nearly a fourth of all slaves in the nation along with a large chunk of the working class and low class population join together in an attempt to overthrow the government.

The slave revolt was eventually put down but not before it spawned a civil war which lasted from 1868 to 1871

Did your nation abolish slavery before, but re-instate it? How did this happen?
Yes. Slavery was originally abolished in 1819 by a royal order but after a coup in 1832 slavery was reintroduced in 1839 to benefit the corporations and upper classes who now ruled the nation.

How long has slavery been prohibited in your nation? Officially, since 1796 AD, when TS was founded. TS' predecessor states, the non-human Khanates, outlawed slavery after they rose up and killed their remaining masters.

How common is the presence of human trafficking / illegal slavery within the defined boundaries of your nation? Somewhat common, principally in the forms of burning passports to keep people there and underground chimera smuggling.

How many people are owned and exploited illegally in your nation? How many for each free wo/man? The exact number is unknown, but it is believed to be several million, definitely less than ten million. Right?

What punishment is mandated for those who are involved with the business of illegal slavery? Mandatory death penalty. No exceptions.

If an illegal slave trade is present, which demographics are most at risk of falling victim to it?
Most illicit slaves are chimeras, such as Nekomimis, as well as chimeras doing business in TurtleShroom. Chimeras from places such as Hiluxia, Barboneia, and Darussalam are also trafficked into TurtleShroom. Slaves that are not chimeras arrive in TS for work visas and have their passports and visas burnt.

Is indentured servitude, prison labor, or other forms of correctional or legal debt servitude permitted by your nation's laws?
Yes. Serfdom or indentured servitude can be a punishment for certain crimes, depending on the location the crime is committed, but prison labor is ubitiquous.

No person can be subject to any form of forced labor except in the due process of a fair and impartial court of law. Civil courts can sentence debtors to indentured servitude or serfdom only if the person does not have enough assets for the court to seize to pay the debt.

From what forms of labor or use, if any, are indentured servants and prisoners protected by law from being subjected to by their creditors or prison authorities?
Those sentenced to serfdom or indentured servitude for their debts or crimes cannot pass on their condition. The debt owed by the serf or debt laborer expires either when it is paid off or when the serf or debt laborer dies. The same goes for those sentenced to serfdom for a crime. Any childbearing creature that was sentenced to a lifetime of serfdom for punishment of a crime always has their offspring born free; they do not inherit that debt. A debt that has not finished being paid off is nonetheless considered satisfied upon the death of a person rendered indentured to it.

Furthermore, a person sentenced by the civil courts to indentured servitude cannot be harmed, beaten, struck, or otherwise brought physical harm by their creditor. Failing to abide by this immediately discharges the servant and cancels the debts owed.

What forms of labor or use, if any, are indentured servants and prisoners typically subjected to by their creditors or prison authorities?
Normally, they are made to perform hard physical labor, such as breaking large rocks into smaller rocks, mining for the state, prison company, nobleman (etc.) on whose land or to whom they committed the crimes on. Many prisons in TurtleShroom are agricultural prisons in nature, where prisoners work twelve hours a day to grow their own food on-site.

A prison can lease or rent forced labor for any reason, to anyone who is willing to pay, subject to the rubberstamp approval and supervision of either the Department of Incarceration and Punishment of the Imperial Ministry of Police (in the confederal penal system) or the applicable prison authority of a sub-realm.

Is the killing, sexual abuse, or exploitation of a person held by force as an illegal slave considered a worse crime or otherwise scaled to existing homicide and sexual abuse laws? Yes. The punishment is mandatory capital punishment for the trafficker. No exceptions.

What sociocultural impact on values, ethics, and philosophy has the prohibition of slavery had upon your population?
It has kept TurtleShroom on a more upright path free from stagnation and decadence that slavery brings on nations. While TurtleShroom has willingly traded with slavers and even helped curtail abuses without outright abolitionism, the country has never aspired to set up slavery or defend slavery in any country. The TS government does not campaign to abolish slavery abroad unless the slavery is so extraordinary that its existence is a moral panic to the TS societal conscience, such as the case of [nation]Qassadia[/nation[.

Do any movements exist within your nation arguing and agitating for the reintroduction of slavery? How popular are they? No. Anyone that actually believes this had better not say it in public. That's how you start a fight.

Has slavery as a social and moral issue been the cause of internal or external conflict with separatists / rebels or foreign powers? Yes. For example, TurtleShroom is an enemy of Qassadia because of its spectacular cruelty to its slave population.

Are there any facts, details, or information about legal or illegal slavery in your nation not covered by this questionnaire which you wish to share?
Those illicitly held in involuntary servitude are usually used as cleaning staff, wait staff, and personal domestic servants by their abuser. Most of these cases go unsolved because the entry of chimeras into the country without declaring it is extremely rare. For that reason, making documentation of the entry of chimeras to prove their illegal presence in the country is extremely rare. As such, customs officials go for pretty much every other species of illegal alien first.

The Border Patrol has not historically prioritized hunting illegal chimera entry for dishonorable reasons: chimeras take the jobs that even the humble, blue-collar TurtleShroomers don't want. As chimeras make up just about one percent of the population... do the math.

Are there any facts, details, or information about legal or illegal slavery in your nation not covered by this questionnaire which you wish to share? Like prostitution and pornography, demand for sex slaves is negligible in TurtleShroom thanks to censorship, aggressive prosecution, and especially societal engineering that has championed nothing short of chastity for four hundred years. All illicit slaves in TS are used for forced labor, not sexual pleasure.

This half of the survey deals with slavery as an institution in your nation's past - if slavery has never been permitted, feel free to delete this section.

What legal process in the past did a private citizen or registered company have to go through in order to obtain valid ownership of another human? Might makes right. From the 1200's AD to about 1550 AD, the Mongoloids that subjugated the non-humans oppressed them after effortlessly conquering them.

Did the forfeit of this process and the use of another human for forced labor constitute a crime under your nation's law at this period in time? The use of another human as a slave was a crime under Mongoloid rule.

How many slaves on average over the period of legal enslavement were there in relation to free wo/men? All non-humans were enslaved in the Mongoloid era. Only a slave revolt ended it.

What punishment was mandated for those who were involved with the business of illegal slavery? No such thing at the time.

For what tasks, jobs, and roles were slaves typically purchased for by any legal entity? Anything and everything their masters desired. The most common task was laying Ortoo roads, as beasts of burden, and especially as livestock!

Were there any occupations slaves were by law prohibited to hold? No.

What were the rights of the master over the slave? Could s/he kill the slave at a whim? Was sexual abuse or exploitation of the slave permitted etc.? The Mongoloid masters of the non-humans not only could kill or harm them at whim, they ate their non-human slaves and farmed them as livestock for meat and fungus. As for sexual intercourse, it is not possible to bang a mushroom and the Mongoloids, steppe nomads they may have been, were simply too civilized to violate a turtle.

In accordance to or alongside this, what rights if any did slaves possess under law? None.

Who was permitted to purchase a slave? Only if you were human and only if the slave was not human.

How evenly were slaves distributed amongst the populace of your nation? Which class owned the most slaves etc? Slaves were a mark of prestige and power among individual Mongoloid clans. Horse lords would measure their prestige, in some ways, by the amount of hon-human slaves they could capture or breed.

What type of slaves were in the highest demand? (Scribes, gladiators, sex slaves, personal retainers etc.) Livestock and beasts of burdern.

By what methods were new slaves acquired by your nation for sale to the population? They were captured or bred as livestock.

Were slaves drawn from any particular racial or ethnic group? Only non-humans and chimeras were enslaved.

Who, if anyone, was protected by law from being enslaved by any process? Humans were not enslaved by the Mongoloids. This helped in that they were the only humans in what is today TurtleShroom!

By what process could a slave be freed? The sweet release of death. Alternatively, a slave rebellion, which succeeded in the 1550's AD.

For what crimes, if any, could a citizen of your nation be stripped of legal rights and sold into slavery? How did this impact his or her property and family?

What sociocultural impact on values, ethics, and philosophy did the legal presence of slavery have on your population? It created a rejection of slavery that was enough that abolitionism was explicitly declared by the Missionaries that arrived in TS in the early 1600's AD. The two non-human Khanates demanded that slavery be explicitly banned in the new Constitution as a condition for uniting under the Missionary banner.

How did slavery in your nation end? Were any movements arguing and agitating for the abolition of slavery or its replacement with indentured servitude play a role in this? How popular was the abolition? After the Shivering (or Scarlet) Plague brought the Mongoloids to their knees, the non-humans rose up and slaughtered every human they could encounter.

Did your nation have a history of slave rebellions? Which ones were most prominent? Slavery was ended by a single slave rebellion.
