Is liberal conservatism prominent in your nation?

Postby Deltanium » Sat Mar 02, 2019 8:48 am

Liberal Conservatism, according to Wikipedia is “Liberal conservatism is a political ideology combining conservative policies with liberal stances, especially on economic, social and ethical issues, or a brand of political conservatism strongly influenced by liberalism.

Liberal conservatism incorporates the classical liberal view of minimal government intervention in the economy, according to which individuals should be free to participate in the market and generate wealth without government interference. However, individuals cannot be thoroughly depended on to act responsibly in other spheres of life, therefore liberal conservatives believe that a strong state is necessary to ensure law and order and social institutions are needed to nurture a sense of duty and responsibility to the nation. They also support civil liberties, along with some social conservative positions. In Europe liberal conservatism is the dominant form of contemporary conservatism and centre-right politics.”

In Deltia, yes. The New Conservative Party has been in power for 2 terms uninterruptedly so far.

Liberal-Conservatism does not exist in Zhouran due to cultural and political reasons for it is incompatible with Zhouranese collectivist values and Kaimingism–Jinbuism.

TurtleShroom traditionally uses "liberal" in the American* sense, not the rest of the world's sense. This means, that in TurtleShroom, a "liberal" is, at the least, a "democratic" socialist or other leftist that would be considered center-left outside of the USA (or TurtleShroom). TS considers such leftists to be far-left. What the rest of the world calls "liberal", TurtleShroom calls "classical liberal".

On the American scale, conservatism, in TurtleShroom, isn't as prominent because aren't too many policies to roll back or "conserve". The term isn't used domestically outside of "social conservatism".

Therefore, on the scale and definitions TurtleShroom is, the concept of "liberal conservative" is literally as much of an oxymoron as a "communist facist".

* = TurtleShroom traditionally uses "Americalandese" as the denomnym for a citizen of the RL equivalent to the USA. "American" is used here for convenience.

There's only been two major attempts at moving Liberal Conservatism into the Ziyuan spotlight, and that was with the failed Liberal Democratic Party, a broad tent of moderate centrists designed to challenge the Progressive Party and the ZNP, and the recently founded Republican Party, or Gonghwadang. Led by the charismatic businessman Son Young-Hwan, Gonghwadang has been labelled as a right-leaning centrist party advocating a series of policies usually described as pragmatic, neoliberal, or moderately conservative. The party self describes itself as being "post-ideology, and pro-reason", advocating environmentalist and people-centred reforms.

As Gonghwadang is a new party, it hasn't achieved electoral success yet. The People's New Party for Reform instantly entered the Gukhoe, though it had been formed through a series of mergers with established parties, giving it a base to work with. The Republicans missed out in the 2018 election, but in the February 2019 provincial elections in Hasuri, Hwangodae, Milaeju and Heisan, they won representation. Now, they form a grand government in Heisan with the ZNP and CDP, and sit as the third largest party in irreligious, middle class Hasuri, with 9 seats in the Provincial Assembly, behind the Progressive 23, and the ZNP's 41.

Current polling puts them at 3.1% nationally, but in two constituencies they poll in first place. In Changgil, located in the outskirts of Homdaeul, their candidate and leader Son Young-Hwan polls at 37%, 8% above the incumbent Progressive MNA, Marhung Hee. Outside of Hasuri, their support is a bit lower, but in urban Heisan, they're able to lead by a narrow 1.5% margin over the ZNP, with the party polling at 34% in the constituency of Josan.

Overall, we can use this information to conclude that liberal conservatism is not prominent in Ziyu. The only political party professing it, the Gonghwadang, polls at just 3.1% nationally, with their peak being 4.5% in February 2018, which dipped to just 2% as their result in the August 2018 election. Based of polling trends however, their current rise in the polls is expected to level out around 5.5%, and most analysts believe they will enter the Gukhoe in 2018.

Liberal conservatism is not particularly prominent within Gandoor, although the sole conservative party in our nation, the Gandoor Freedom Group, does have a liberal conservative faction within the party and four of the nine members from the party in the Forum self-identify as being part of the liberal conservative faction of the GFG.

Yes, the ruling Conservative Party often embraces Liberal-Conservatism, although at the moment their leader is far-right. The New Liberal Party, which is "Centrist with Christian values", is best described as Liberal-Conservative, although their ideology is often very inconsistent.

Neoconservatism has yet to systematically infect the Right Wing of our politics. PRKN, the leading right wing party, even refuses offers by PFP, the miniscule liberal conservative party, to formally bond to the right coalition.

PRKN: Партия русского культурного национализма, (Russian Cultural Nationalist Party). Conservative National Populists. 223 (of 451) seats in Duma, Holder of chairmanship and most cabinet positions.

PFP: Партия фискальной политики, (Fiscal Policy Party). "Liberal Conservative"/Neoconservative party. 6 (of 451) seats in Duma

No, not really. While both liberal and conservative parties exist and are popular in the German Empire, none can be describer as "liberal conservative". The DKP (German Conservative Party) as it stands today is perhaps the closest one can get: They are conservative and anti-centralist overall and have a balanced view on the economy, but do borrow ideas from liberal populism, with ideals such as direct democracy being on their agenda. The DKP is currently the junior coalition government party.

Given that the least popular party has changed to liberal conservatism, there is some room for it, partly because it looks better than separatist corporate statism. Still, liberal conservatives are among the minority while classical liberals and neoliberals easily defeat them.

Given that Republican politics lean heavily toward classical liberalism, liberal conservatives have traditionally been the mainstream right in the FFR. They haven't had much success lately as the Conservatives merged with the Moderates and the Liberals to form the Moderate Liberal Conservatives due to a trend against the traditional big 3 parties and then that party itself imploded in the most recent election due to a disastrous acceptance speech from their candidate for Consul, leaving the classically liberal Radical Alliance and Liberty Party ascendent with the progressive conservative Responsible Progress Party as the primary opposition for now.

Not really. There is no mainstream force in our politics that favors laissez faire capitalism, and the closest we come to any kind of social conservatism is the Purrservationist Party, a green party that favors the preservation of some traditions. But even that is not conservative by most standards, it is mild and focused on supporting and promoting engagement in local communities.

A moderate form of Right-Libertarianism rules LiberNovusAmericae, and while it does have some characteristics with liberal conservatism, it does not emphasize nor seek a strong state to promote morality. Liberal conservative parties have gained seats in the legislature however, but they've never achieved a majority. Social conservatism just isn't popular here, save for being moderately pro-life when it comes to abortion.

Superficially, Darussalam might appear as a 'liberal-conservative' polity, for its emphasis on market, prosperity, and stability.

But then one considers that liberal-conservatism is an ideology developed in a certain social context - a context that appears much more moderate and nuanced than Darussalami social context. For the latter, its pursuit for market-oriented prosperity and orderly stability could be said as being taken to much greater logical extreme than liberal-conservative polities.

We do not have liberalism and conservatism in the full sense, because there are ideas of competition, support for religion, a patriarchal family, etc.
We do not have this, socialist society. But there are left analogues of conservatism and liberalism: the Mole and Albatross subcultures.
The Mole is made up of people who are thrifty and cautious, and the Albatross is more prone to risk, freedom, and technical innovation.
