Media censorship law?

Postby Taozi (Ancient) » Mon Apr 12, 2010 8:58 pm

is there any media censorship law in your nation? Such as banning certain movies to be shown in theaters, or banning some shows to be shown at a certain time?

There's absolutely no censorship in Taozi. We don't even have a censorship board. It's not like banning movies is going to stop people from viewing it anyway. So why ban movies?

P.S. speaking of censorship, here's a recent funny video from the Onion about censorship

There are no limits on freedom of speech, except regarding tapeings of illegal acts, made for profit.

We reserve the right to censor the media if national security is threatened or it promotes an illegal act or hate speech.

Other than that citizens are pretty free to say what they please.

For movies and television shows, there is very little true censorship, because we feel it is more the individual's responsibility to decide what it is they want to watch. There is a National Media Rating System (NMRS), but it is more a courtesy to let you know in advance.

Regarding newspapers, news radio and television news, the Government can, if necessary, invoke the Defense of the Queendom Act and put in place a directive to keep silent on a given issue until told otherwise, but no Government has had to do this in sixty years, because they all know it is the Queendom's policy to be as open as logically possible on all topics, in exchange for a little reasonable restraint.

The media of the Most Serene Republic of the Quendi is the most free in the world. Since it is entirely owned by the Imperial Dynasty of Alcedina it is however extremely difficult to tell :)

Oh yeah. Lots of stuff. Mainly for political reasons, such as you know, saying bad stuff about the established government and monarchy, unless it can be legally proven to be in jest.
They do not however censor swearing, or other things often dubbed as 'mature content'. It is possible to censor more but in such cases it becomes a heavily debated exception.

The only stuff that the media's not allowed to print are:

-> Things that would enable a crime to be committed
-> Military/government intelligence

Other than that, you can pretty much say whatever the hell you like.
Please note that Mid Lothian is based on fantasy. Any references to anything/one/where that exists is completely coincidential.
Frequently used abbreviations: HoS = Head of State; HoG = Head of Government; ML = Mid Lothian; KSS - Kate Stephens-Smith.
Fancy an embassy in ML? Click me for details. (PS - I'll return the favour.)
I am usually rewriting stuff about Mid Lothian - just because it's true today isn't necessarily true tomorrow.

Warning - Full-time Grammar Nazi at work. You have been warned. (I guess that's due to my mum being an English teacher. Also, don't use masculine words to describe me - my name is Rebecca, which is clearly a feminine name.)

Other than prohibiting the display of illegal acts as "entertainment", there's hardly any censorship of our nation's media outlets.

Sometimes considered an act of undue 'censorship' is a flat ban on gossip magazines and rumor mongering.

Effectively; One must cite sources and have evidence before presenting their story. One must also have permission from all involved, including any public figures.

censorship in most forms is generally unlawful under cameroi's constitution.

violent content and that exemplifying and romanticizing thoughtlessness
tends to be self 'censored' in the sense that these are not popular perspectives
in cameroi culture.

Most censorship is prohibited. We do however have a Commissariat of Telecommunications that does impose decency standards on television, but only during the hours that children are most likely to watch, and only on Network television. Cable and Satellite stations can censor programmes with their own standards if they wish, but the Watershed applies to them as well.

All "media" in Airstrip Sixteen is created for public consumption by the Outer Party under the directive of the Inner Party. Basically, every single piece of film, literature, music, etc is propaganda created by the government caste.

The Proles lack the literacy, education, technological knowhow or willpower to create their own media.
