New Melvonia wrote:The precise story of Melvonia's origins are lost in the mists of time and the subject of vigorous debate among historians. The following outline is generally agreed upon, however.
During the long drawn-out collapse of the Roman Empire in Europe, a senator named Melvonius was ordered to embark an army and clear out some of the pirates and rebels plaguing the east Mediterranean. Melvonius protested that he wasn't really a plumed-helmets-and-eagles sort of Roman, much more a swanning-about-in-a-toga-having-banquets sort of Roman, but in vain. If anything, it convinced the Emperor that he wouldn't defect and turn into yet another would-be rival himself.
With immense reluctance, Melvonius set sail accompanied by his entire family and the most important members of his household - cooks, party-planners, fan-wavers, wine-pourers, goblet-pollishers and so on - and a few dozen unfit and underpaid legionnaries to make up the numbers.
Before long, the inevitable happened and Melvonius's ships were "blown off course", far away from the battles they were meant to be fighting. (Almost everyone agrees that this unfortunate accident was completely deliberate.) The fleet eventually landed on a beautiful, tranquil, fertile and sparsely inhabited island.
Melvonius was no soldier, but thanks to his banquet heavy life in Rome he was an expert in lying, floridly, elaborately and sometimes almost even convincingly. He used trained carrier pigeons to report back regularly to the Senate and People of Rome, detailing his fleet's heroic exploits and stirring victories, none of which actually happened. Meanwhile, the fleet itself set about peacefully farming the island, growing grape vines, feasting, and generally letting the Eternal Empire collapse around them while they stayed well out of it.
At some point - records are unclear when - the fleet and the few indigenous islanders elected Melvonius king. Of course, at the time that would have been the signal for the leader to muster his troops, raise his standard and stake everything on a death-or-glory voyage back to Rome, to sieze the Imperial throne for himself. And of course, Melvonius did no such thing. He distributed a "bonus" to his troops, bought everyone a drink, and basically forgot the whole thing.
While may other cultures might find this an unimpressive, or even dishonourable, start to a nation's story, the descendents of Melvonius - the Melvonians - still consider him a founder of great practical wisdom and common sense. At worst, Melvonians can indeed be cowardly insincere drunkards, but at best they are paragons of pacifism, experts in good living, wily avoiders of unnecessary conflict, and (this is their greatest source of national pride) exemplars of the dignified refusal to get involved in bloodshed for no good reason.
Thr subsequent history of Melvonia has reflected this, being peaceful, uneventful and quite exceptionally dull.

The 20th Century was a period of intense destitution for the Asian people. The feudal warring-states broke bonds between brothers, the colonizing West sucked us dry of our resources, and the crony puppeteers of the Asian working-class continued to hide behind false promises. The thasalassocracies, the mandate of heaven, our native Empires were written out of history, 'civilized' to conform with the commands of our Western masters. When the tide of power shifted drastically East as the West began to suffer from the effects of the Great Depression, our ancestors clung to the empty promises of the Japanese overlords who brought nothing but ruthless aggression, lines of coffins in a pointless war of imperialism, and demands of unquestionable servitude to dictatorial puppet-regimes. Only from this melting-pot of cultures, from the threat of a common foe, did we learn to embrace our irredentism. Even while both the Capitalist West began to collude with the Fascist demagogues, when Europe became doused with Soviet power; did our zealous pioneers carry-on the fighting, the bleeding, and the dying. After the triumphant war waged over Japanese aggression, a revolutionary spark buried the final grip of the Western world on our beloved Asia. We pursued an unfamiliar voice of history that challenged those occident ideals; states not dictated by the labor of men, but accelerated by the rhythm of machines. We gave everyone a say in everything, unlike the leeching Imperial loyalists. We built-up our pride in familial spirit, converse to the Bolshevik union between rivals. We consolidated the will of Father Asia through the People's Democracy; lifting millions from poverty, strengthening our industry, sturdying our cities, and safeguarding the sovereignity of nations. In a cynical reversal of fortune, our young nation now finds itself surrounded once more by reactionary forces, but this time, with the sterength of our Bolshevik alliance and the power of Europe on our side. It is not us who fear. The Red tide now dominates the Eurasian continent through the Fourth Internationale. Our faithful leaders now look further West. We shall defeat them in every battle they so choose. The Asian people are unbroken, we are unconquerable! How long shall it be until retribution takes full-circle, and the rallying mobs sound the trumpets of war once more? The answer is learned by the Obliteration of the Self, recited by the scientists of our cloning facilities, legislated by our industrious Congress of Soviets. It is the raw paranoia of our Western adversaries. It is the call of the Federation, the hurrah of our historic struggle, the Red chant of Neo-Maoism; "Serve the People!" |

New Melvonia wrote:Also a general question about other nations' founding stories (which the Melvonian Ministry of Interesting Stuff is enjoying a great deal, btw!)
How do you know? Is your early history so old it can only be pure legend, or carefully reconstructed from ancient fragments, or written in chronicles? Or is it so recent that people still remember it? Or is it still happening? (We're somewhere between 2, 3 and 4 on the list.) Does everyone agree or do historians punch each-other in lecture halls over it?
Apologies if this belongs on its own thread - these posts have sparked our curiosity! :-)

Nouvelle Amerique wrote:Nouvelle Amerique is the North American holdings of the French Colonial Empire which started in 1608 with the founding of Quebec. From 1608-1750, the territory was controlled directly by the French monarch until a meeting with a visiting foreign Lord, convinced King Louis XV to name his family and any direct descendants as Territorial Governor in 1753. From 1753 until the start of the British colonist's revolt in 1775, the family served the King and presided over an area that stretched as far north as the Arctic Circle to the Gulf of Mexico in the south as a puppet government. The provincial capital of the territory was New Orleans.
Following the British defeat in 1783, the second Territorial Governor of New France (Nouvelle Amerique) petitioned the French king to cede the territory to his family permanently in exchange for eight million francs and a supplemental offering of 25,000 francs annually for the next 20 years. Louis XVI agreed and ceded the Louisiana territory and the Canadian territories.
In 1790, Nouvelle Amerique was officially recognised and incorporated as a monarchy by the French. With the Territorial Governor becoming King. The same family has ruled Nouvelle
Amerique since, carrying a 229-year dynasty into the 21st century.
